Now seeing Half Moon Bay in B&W, much of what was vying for attention became more prominent. The angles in the rocks, the amazing slant of the clouds. Then finally, the water that puddled off toward the intensely white, puffy clouds.

The low tide delivered some interesting shapes and textures, but also an amazing sight. It was fun finding compositions before having to dodge the incoming tide.

On the West Coast of California

... half an hour after I'd got this shot, rain clouds drifted over the moon and blotted it out completely ...

The HMVS Cerberus, launched in 1871, was once considered Australia's most powerful warship. It saw 50 years of active service before being decommissioned after WW1 in 1921.

It was stripped of all its valuable parts before being sold for scrap to the Black Rock Yacht Clud in 1924. It was then scuttled in Half Moon Bay, Black Rock, where it was used as a breakwater for smaller vessels.

This photo is a HDR image of Half Moon Bay, taken from a rocky outcrop, looking back over the Cerberus toward the Black Rock Surf Life Saving Club.

Early evening along the California Coast, just south of Half Moon Bay. The marine layer is starting to invade the land and the air is heavy with moisture. A beautiful night to me, but nothing special for the cattle who graze the verdant coastal grass, oblivious to the thoughts of the lone photographer.

Happy Fence Friday everyone.

This will be my last post or a while, Flickr friends, as I care for precious loved ones in my family. I probably won't have time to comment on your great images... Prayers appreciated.

Most of my moon shots are when it is full. But this half-moon (at 57%) begged be for its portrait, so I complied :)

See you sometime...

A gorgeous cliff top hike along the George Bass Coastal Walk from Punchbowl to Kilkunda has many surprises along the way. One of them is Half Moon Bay. We didn't do the entire 7 km walk as once we scrambled down to this glorious location, I was in heaven and the rest of the day was spent amongst the rocks and plants.

The Half Moon Battery is built on and around the ruins of the huge medieval David's Tower. Begun in 1367-68 by King David II, the tower collapsed during the Siege of Lang of 1571-73.

This magnificent rampart includes several bedrooms on the first and second floors. The Half Moon Battery was completed in 1588.

The Seven Sisters: bronze cannons cast in the castle for James IV around 1500 – originally defended the Demi-Lune battery. Today's guns are 18-pounder guns made in 1810 during the Napoleonic Wars.

The Demilune Battery is on the east side of the castle, overlooking the main entrance.

And how many times have I put this up and taken it down? Merry Christmas everyone!
