The linguist in me could not resist today's Flickr Group Roulette - today's group is My Favorite Word.

The word to chose was easy - LOVE. A word that means everything.

I'd like to ask all of you who visit my photostream to put in the comments the word for LOVE in any language you know. Thank you!

In Vinitiri (the language I study in Papua New Guinea), the word for love is mánáne (as a verb). At least, the is probably the closest to the English word love, but it's hard to translate.

I can't believe this is the last day of November.

This photo is completely unedited - not even cropped. Yay! View this one large and on black (if you so desire)

Day twenty-six of my 365 Days challenge.

For FGR – Now Get Back To Work.

My first FGR which wasn't for my 366 of 2008. Also my first self portrait since the end of my project.

It's a bit rough to start FGR for the year (at least start it for me) with back to work. Fortunately, I was working from home today, so I didn't have to wait for the bus in -8°C.

Anyway, this is pretty much what I do at work when not doing work: Thinking. I'm in an incredibly thoughtful phase at the moment, so I'll just spend our sitting staring at nothing just thinking. I don't know if I have a mild depression, or if it's just the post-366 blues.

(btw, it's totally weird not writing my 366 tags all the time, especially on a self portrait.)

For 365 Days, FGR, TRP, and February's Alphabet Fun.

February 22nd - What's your angle, buddy?, Rückenfigur, and The Letter V.

*Angle - over the shoulder.

V is for violated.

That's the expression you see on Jerry's face: violation. He was taking an ever-so-peaceful nap on my bed and I, being the selfish mommy that I am, woke him from his precious slumber to use him in this shot. He didn't seem to mind too much... he cooperated with me and best as could be expected with only a few whines and minimal struggles to escape from my arms. But I know he loves me very much, so it's actually no biggie that I violated just one of his numerous afternoon naps.

TRF: I somehow, unbeknownst to me, trained Jerry to want to sit in my lap when I'm at my desk using the computer. He's sitting with me here right now, purring away as I type!

FGR invades Fierce and Fabulous

Here it is, my lovely foo-bitches. Exceptionally fabulous. The blue-tooth insinuates “fierce” through business means. You see, I’m so important and fabulously fierce (business-wise) that I don’t even have the time to take off my Bluetooth for my 365.

In fact, I while taking this shot I was on the phone with Bruce Willis. I got him to sign on to do the lead voice the newest Pixar film.

True story.

FGR invades Twirl Break

Big Twirl on white.

Oh my god. The things I do for you, FGR. I get so stupid motion sick, it's ridiculous.

I put my camera on its multiple-shot setting and held down the shutter. The plan was to pick the best, but it turned out much more interesting to show you Fuggers the progression that led up to me regurgitating my lunch like that of a mother bird caring for her stainless steel child.

FGR today is picking on TeeRish. As Clem says, she is dead sexy. It is also her birthday.

She is also an absolute dork and one of the people I was blessed to meet in Italy.

Here is my tribute on her much-better shot, here.

Thanks for the fun Trish! Happy birthday!

It is the day for FLICKR GROUP ROULETTE's Relative Weather photo. - (we were assigned to show a physics related photo in honor of Einstein's unveiling of the Theory of Relativity 103 years ago today.) I was stumped until I realized... OH! Wait, Negative Space has to do with Physics, right? Excitedly came to google and found Newton's Third Law of Physics. BRILLIANT!!

Find out more at the link below:

Newton's Third Law of Physics

I feel so accomplished.

For FGR visits Self Portrait Confessions.

My confession is on the computer screen.

So why is that a "confession?" Many people I know are proud of the fact that they would rather read than watch TV. In fact, I'm pretty sure I know a couple of people who would lie and say that they would rather read, when in fact they are totally absorbed in American Idol.

But there's a difference: those people don't make a living from TV. If everyone started reading, and quit watching TV, I'd have to go find a new job. And I like this job. So please, put down those books and pick up the remote!

Oh, and one more confession: The one TV show that I never miss is not even on FOX. It's "TheBig Bang Theory" on CBS.

FGR today asked us to depict an awesome meme. I was all confused until I realized that "meme" is used in the non-English meaning:

What the hell is a meme, you ask?

An item of pop culture propogated via word of mouth. Usually used in reference to the latest cool website that is propogated by e-mail.

Is there anything more scorching hot today than Twitter? Unreasonably so? At least LOLCATS are not over-hyped like Twitter. *shrug*

For Friday's Flicker Group Roulette challenge...Little Feat -- Join the Band...featuring the songs of Little Feat. I was browsing through the list of song names and came across "Sample in a Jar". While I don't know much about Little Feat and am an admitted Phish head.

Its hidden far away

But someday I may tell

The tale of metal tangle

When into your world I fell

Without you now I wander soaking

Secretly afraid

cause in your grasp the fears don't last

and some of them have stayed

I wheeled around because i

Didn't hear what you had said

And saw you dancing with elihu

Up on leemor's bed

And I was foggy rather groggy, you helped me to my car

The binding belt enclosing me, a sample in a jar

And on the market stands unfolding

With all their willies and their wares

I shuffle by alert but numb

To all the glances and the glares

And I think of you unheeding

All the times I raise my cup

Its now I know that you knew that

I'd soon end up end up

For 365 Days, FGR, TRP, and my first for TOTW.

March 3rd - A Pair or Two - Things, NOT People, Blue For You, and Technique.

My pair of... guns. Just kidding, obviously not. My pair of blue 5 lb. weights. I tell myself I want to use them everyday, but alas, I do not.

My technique... um, not all that interesting. Lighting is bathroom lights and flash. Uploaded into Picnik; applied Lomo-ish effect; pumped up temperature, saturation, and contrast; slapped on a vignette and boom there you have it. Nothin' special.

TRF: I started lifting weights at the gym a year ago (back when I could go everyday, and I did!) because I was going to be in a wedding over the summer and wanted to be in shape and have nice arms in my strapless bridesmaid dress (I was maid of honor, the most important of the bridesmaids lol). Right after the wedding, I got lazy and stopped... partially because we moved further from the gym, partially because I just didn't care anymore. I'm in another wedding at the end of the month, and I surprisingly don't care as much about making sure I'm in shape and looking good. I go to the gym when I can and that's about the best I can do.

For FGR - Story Telling Photos.

OK, this may look very familiar . . . yet more ghetto lighting. I've tried to put a different spin on it by trying out this idea I've had in my head for a while, my (slightly scary) take on the comedy/tragedy masks. It's not quite how I imagined it (in my head I was pulling funny faces and there was no ghetto lighting) but you work with what you get right? Half of me wants to apologise for not being ambitious, but the other half disagrees - I like ghetto lit shots, I think they're really cool and you can't apologise for that, can you?

Can you guess which one's comedy and which one's tragedy? I took these shots and I can hardly tell . . . must try harder not to look like a psycho when I'm smiling.

Now . . . this is my first shot for FGR. The theme for today was chosen by my good Flickr buddy rebecca *, and after her oh so subtle hints yesterday I decided I couldn't not join in

;-)

I've got to admit that I took this shot before I knew what the FGR theme would be, but as this idea was always meant to tell a story (of sorts) about myself it kind of fits. But only just.

The story has something to do with the two sides of Daz. Everyone has at least two sides to their personality of course, humans are complicated creatures after all. Well, some of them are. What we portray to those on the outside is usually very different to what's going on behind the scenes. I'm no different. But what I've noticed in my near thirty years is that the public face of Daz is a goofy, bad-joke cracking, easy going sort of person. Happy to do anything for anyone, anytime. Friendly even.

That would be the me grinning scarily on the right there. Perhaps a goofier face would've been more fitting?

The other Daz however, is none of these things. The real Daz is plagued by doubt. Sees the glass as half empty. Is definitely not a fan of other people. Has very specific views about the treatment of those that piss him off and those that show blatant disregard to others. This Daz could also be the scary smiling me but for the purposes of this story (is this a story?) is the overly serious me on the left.

The real Daz sits somewhere in between overly serious Daz and scarily smiling Daz I guess. This Daz is far too boring to include in this photo. The other two Daz's wouldn't let him in the shot anyway.

Here endeth the story.

So is this just enough to count for FGR today then? Hey, at least I've managed to smile in this shot, even if I do look like I'm about to stab someone in the jugular with a pen (a la Joe Pesci in Casino). I promise I'll play FGR again if you let this shot stay in the group . . .

Did you know (according to Wikipedia) Casino is the sweariest American film ever (excluding documentaries)? 422 uses of the word 'fuck'. In three hours. That's a good average per minute no? Call me childish but . . . that's just cool!

Oh and by the way this shot looks better big and on black

The Wheel stops tonight on Tell it with a song and a photo. Although I generally think of "lyrics photos" as enormous creativity crutches, it gives me a chance to send Jamie a message:

I've seen the storm clouds in your past

But rest assured 'cause you are safe at home at last

I rescued you, you rescued me

And we're right where we should be

when we're together

I know the questions in your mind

But go ahead and ask me one more time

You'll find the answer's still the same

It won't change from day to day

for worse or better

Will I promise to be your best friend?

And am I here until the end?

Can I be sure I have been waiting for you?

And did I say my love is true?

Baby I will, I am, I can, I have, I do!

I know the time will disappear

But this love we're building on will always be here

No way that this is sinking sand

On this solid rock we'll stand forever

Will I promise to be your best friend?

And am I here until the end?

Can I be sure I have been waiting for you?

And did I say my love is true?

Baby I will, I am, I can, I have, I do!

Baby I will, I am, I can, I have

Oh, I will, I am, I can, I have

Baby I will, I am, I can, I have, I DO!

-- Paul Brandt, I Do

This is my three hundred thirty eighth self portrait for 365 Days.

23 October 2007

Lit by dining room chandelier in background and the cheap-O eBay remote flash trigger to front photo right. The 430EX was head-high, pointed at the ceiling, and at 1/8 power.

For Flickr Group Roulette and Things You May Not Know About Me.

When I was twelve years old, sick with a serious sinus infection, I realized the left side of my face wasn't working properly. Suddenly I could wink- I've never been able to wink properly (there's another thing you don't know about me). By day's end, the entire left side of my face wasn't working. I was diagnosed with Bell's Palsy. Thankfully, the healing process is much faster when the patient is younger- and only lasted 6 weeks. But at the time, it felt like an eternity.

And there you have it.

FGR

Well...it's technically Thursday now, so yay! I cant talk!!

This week, I found out one of my good friends has AML (Acute Myeloid Leukemia). Essentially, she has problems forming functional white blood cells and has to undergo chemotherapy and eventually receive a bone marrow transplant (thankfully, from her father). She first found out 10 years ago, battled through, but it has since come back. She said after the first two treatments, she will lose her hair and is already dreading the fact that her social life will be cut back dramatically because she will feel too self-conscious bald. Well, girl, you are still gorgeous in my eyes, and I will try my best to make you feel as beautiful as you want! Let's go wig shopping!! ♥ and prayers to you, my dear!

FGR picked I Crush Your Head, which is fine with me. Last time I did it, Casper made Explore.

If it helps you think I followed directions, imagine this is someone else's hand crushing me. I'm just here for the bokey, anyhoo.

Halloween Portrait and a copycat (of sorts)of

olga_sgr!'s Duck splatter shot

After all, my faithful Mac, the duck, is down for some fun. Fortunately there was no splatter in the hair. Thanks buddy! :)

NOTE:

Okay, so after an entire month of dressing up for Halloween I went out to a late night dinner on Halloween to a place that doesn't do dress up. WTF?? Oh well, the food was still good. So no costume other than this one today (which I also managed to sneak into the restaurant anyway.) Eff 'em!

For FGR and That Is So Cliche!

Some of these are my own particular favourites to do so I'd see them as cliches, some I've not tried before (and won't try again - blooming sugar sprinkles):

- rainbow stripy tights - check

- looking coquettishly at the camera - check

- sugarlips - check

-*make a heart with your hands* - check

- selective colour - check

- over expose to bleach out background - check

- cutesy bunches on thirty something woman - check

Todays FGR group is Kilroy Was Here.

When I was younger the song Mr. Roboto by the group Styx was always on the radio. Everytime I heard it, I would ask my parents to turn it off. I hated the song. Not because it wasn't catchy or anything like that. It was because towards the end of the song all I heard was Kill Roy. I thought they were saying kill Roy as in my dad. I wanted to have nothing to do with it. My parents never questioned why I disliked the song so much they just obliged me though I couldn't understand why my dad liked the song.

It wasn't until much later that I understood that the song wasn't saying kill Roy but rather Kilroy. How was a kid to know?

Todays theme is Gambling. Inspired by the group Gambling: Ker-ching

I really hate gambling! I guess this is as close as I come to gambling though. Should I drink the milk, or not? That's always a gamble around here. You never know how long that shit has been in the fridge.

"what, milk doesn't have beer in it?"

*pushes milk to the back of the fridge*

From the "Game On" Exhibition at London's Science Museum

FGR wanted us to copy a copycat.

Well, I am copying Jerry who copied the Knob. I picked it because I don't get to wear my stripey socks nearly enough, nor make fun of the Numpty nearly enough.

Oh, and Happy HNT!

For FGR : Mikey's Last 365 Hurrah

65 days down, 300 to go!!!!

I think in a roundabout way I have managed to meet all four criteria in this mammoth FGR task.

The first - Quotes and Quotations - one of my favourite quotes is in fact printed on my underwear but you cant quite read it due to all the jumping!! It reads "Boys are stupid - throw rocks at them". Love it.

The second - Jump For Mikey (The Jedi of Jump?) - well here I am clearly jumping my ass off!!

The third - Half Nekkid Thursdays - see aforementioned underwear (still wating for my invitation to this group to be accepted...).

And the fourth - Black and White Self Portraits.

So I think I did ok. I couldnt choose which pic to use and so I called in a little help from FD's Flickr toys. I know the three close up images are noisy but I used ISO800 and the usual lighting problems from the apartment reared their ugly heads again. I also quite like the noise as it hides a multitude of sins ;D

I got very dizzy, hot and lightheaded doing this but it was loads of fun. And well done Mikey!!

[Music theme "Keep On Jumpin" by The Lisa Marie Experience (See day 6/365 for more details).

Created with fd's Flickr Toys.

For FGR - The Great Moments in Family History.

This is not out of the norm for our normal family portraits anyway. We kinda wanted to do the whole Simpson's theme with it, but I'm definitely no Marge, Billy's definitely not Bart, and well, Jay could be Homer, but he's smarter, way smarter, and has more hair. :)

He's not choking Billy at all, I assure you... I am choking both of them out right now by making Sauerbraten. heh.

FGR today brings us Numberwang, based on the hilarious comedy game show. I'd never seen it, but I was inspired today to show you some of my favorite mystical numbers.

I had to do a report in my high school math class. I decided to do it on math prodigies. Because I am ridiculously brilliant (among other things), I learned to find the fifth root of numbers who are whole.

Put another way, take any two-digit number, raise it to the fifth power (X*X*X*X*X) and tell me that number. At the time, I could give you the answer in less than two seconds.

Part of our report involved giving a presentation. I borrowed my dad's $300 calculator (you can get better these days at the 99 Cent store) because it could do math up to 10 digits. I let someone in the class pick any two digit number, do the math, and tell me the product. I repeated the number and wrote it on the black board, and wrote the fifth root immediately afterward. Writing the number out just gave me time to calculate it myself.

Even the teacher was amazed. She eventually ordered me out of the room, had the kids write ten numbers on the board, then had me come back in. If I could find all ten fifth roots in less than a minute, I'd get an A. I think it took me 30 seconds, which was mostly how long it took the two kids to write what I said.

I got an A because I was ridiculously brilliant.

College has since solved that problem. :-(

Anyways, if that doesn't deserve a Numberwang, what does?!

Flickr Group Roulette is doing Forced Perspective today, and I really don't have anything in me -- I'm lazy and non-creative tonight. Hence, the overly-strong texture (at f/7.1 at iso 1600 it was really noisy) and cheesy Kids In The Hall reference.

Get over it :)

Oooohh, what a fun Fugger challenge today!

As many of you know, I love Christmas. Some have even called me a Christmas "freak," and if by freak they mean one who enjoys old timey Christmas music (think Nat King Cole and Otis Redding)...one who looks forward to decorating the tree as soon as the Halloween decorations are put away (I have enough restraint to wait until 12/1)... or one who enjoys wrapping presents and placing them strategically under the tree...

Then I will proudly let my Christmas freak flag fly!

For Show Me Your Balls aka Self Portrait in Christmas Balls!

For Flickr Group Roulette and Mask Portraits and Self-Portraits.

My mom told me once that she read a study reporting that women who don't sleep in a dark environment have a higher risk of cancer. At the time, I lived in an apartment with tons of windows and streetlights right outside. I bought this sleep mask and now I rarely travel without it.

The "brown box" prototype of the Magnavox Odyssey autographed by creator Ralph Baer.

In my opinion this is one of the most important pieces of video game history on display. Unfortunately it didn't get into the sordid history of this console and Pong.
