En mi Flickr ya hay una versión antigua de esta foto pero ahora la reincorporo con un nuevo revelado y eligiendo la última foto de una ráfaga de cuatro disparos. Aprovechando una copiosa nevada, aquel día nos acercamos hasta Gujuli para fotografiar los tres trenes diurnos que por entonces partían de Bilbao a primeras horas de la mañana. El Diurno gallego era el menos interesante de todos por culpa de su paupérrima composición. Pero aquel día apareció con un regalo en forma de 269 remolcada y encabezado por la inefable 269.908, una locomotora que se distinguía de sus "hermanas" por llevar la numeración frontal en un lugar atípico y por el aparatoso lijado de la carrocería a la altura de las rejillas de ventilación laterales. También era una de las Mitsubishi 269 que más veces se quedaba tirada pero, pese a todo, no os imagináis el cariño que le pude llegar a coger en aquellos tiempos....
In my Flickr there is already an old version of this photo but now I reincorporate it with a new development and choosing the last photo of a burst of four shots. Taking advantage of a copious snowfall, that day we approached Gujuli to photograph the three day trains that were then leaving Bilbao in the early hours of the morning. The Galician Day train was the least interesting of all because of its very poor composition. But that day it appeared with a gift in the form of a 269 towed and headed by the ineffable 269.908, a locomotive that was distinguished from its "sisters" by carrying the frontal numbering in an atypical place and by the savory sanding of the body at the height of the side ventilation grilles. It was also one of the Mitsubishi 269 that had more breakdowns but, despite everything, you can not imagine the affection that I professed to this locomotive in those times ....

We stopped off on our way to Bodnant at this viewpoint to look at the stunning scenery.
"The Llyn Clywedog is a man made reservoir formed by the construction of the Clywedog Dam. The lake has a surface area of 615 acres (230 football pitches), is 216 ft deep at its maximum depth and stretches in all a distance of some six miles.
At its maximum, it is just 500 yards wide. Some 15 miles of new or improved roads were built around the reservoir and a number of viewing points and picnic areas are arranged along the circular drive around the lake enabling visitor to enjoy the wonderful panoramic views.
There is a second, much less visible dam at Bwlch-y-gle. This is an earthen structure faced with stone, about 40ft high and 600ft long which prevents the lake spilling over into the neighbouring valleys on either side of Bryn y Fan hill, the highest of the hills surrounding the lake and a commanding feature to be seen from miles around.
Around the Lake there are a number of walks including the Clywedog Gorge Trail around the Bryn Tail Mine workings and the Llyn Clywedog Scenic Trail.The National Trail of Glyndwr's Way also passes beneath the dam before pursuing a course along the southern shore of the lake.
The Clywedog provides a perfect habitat for wildlife. Buzzards and Red Kite are now a common sight, and recently there have even been occasional sightings of Ospreys. Mallard are attracted to the lake, while Tawney Owls, Pied Flycatchers and a whole host of Tits have established themselves in the woods bordering the shore.
The lake is amply stocked with brown and rainbow trout. The management and fishing rights are the preserve of the Llanidloes Angling Society. Sailing on the lake is run by the Clywedog Sailing Club. Both organisations hold numerous competitions and regattas throughout the year and visitors are always welcome."

i am still swimming in the sea even though the temperature is dipping below 5°c (41°f). because its dark i don't tend to take my water proof camera to swimming with me. also because its so cold there is not enough time to bang off a roll before you have to get out. but imagine this: 2 days ago what you see in the photo was covered in ice from because of a leaking pipe on the pier. quite surreal swimming round it i can tell you, really wish i had a camera with me.

Part one of a two part series on a local mall that is on its last legs. The series starts off in the various parking lots around the mall. I was really drawn to the play of light. All the lots were pretty much empty so I could take my time and not worry about getting run over.

Durante el Plioceno, en este mismo lugar que ahora forman las aguas el llamado Pantano del Negratín en la provincia de Granada (España), existió un gran lago interior de agua dulce, alimentado por una cuenca endorreica (cerrada y sin salida) en cuyas riberas se ha podido reconstruir la existencia de una importante fauna, por los importantes restos fósiles aportados por los numerosos yacimientos palenteológicos de esta zona. Al menos 19 especies de grandes mamíferos hoy en día extinguidos como hienas gigantes (Pachycrocuta brevirostris), elefantes (Mammuthus meridionalis), rinocerontes (Stephanorhinus etruscus), hipopótamos (Hippopotamus antiquus), caballos (Equus altidens), los grandes bóvidos con hábitos acuáticos (Dmanisibos sp.), los ciervos gigantes (Megaloceros solilhacus) o los célebres tigres dientes de sable (Homotherium latidens), estaban aquí presentes.
La total ausencia de vestigios humanos en el paisaje, la misteriosa luz que lo envuelve, el particular color que adquieren estas aguas por la alta presencia de sales, parece trasladarnos a esta época de nuestra Prehistoria, en la que solo falta la fauna que se ha citado, pero esto sí que no pudo captarlo este fotógrafo.
What crazy times these are. These images were taken not quite two weeks ago before Europe (and more specifically Belgium) went into lockdown. We dithered at the time as to whether we should go but of course there was no mandate to shut Borders whilst we were there. That announcement came the day after our return. Our visit was much quieter and quite eerie with no crowds and no problem with maintaining social distancing.
I seem to have lost confidence and enthusiasm for photography (it's taken me 2 weeks to decide to post these) but it will provide some sort of focus for the coming months. At least we are going into longer and warmer days, and with the lack of air traffic over London and the Home Counties it's lovely to hear the birdsong again and reconnect with nature which in it's self is calming and reassuring.

NORTHERN LIGHTS OVER CHICAGO, 2025!
From last night, unfortunately conditions were hazy (10:30pm, stayed til 12:45am) - and while some reds and greens were visible from time to time, overall it was a very muted show. However, I still snapped photos and, thanks to some editing in post, am able to see that yes they were out in effect, in however such muted form.

Magnolias are prized worldwide for their flowers and forms. Growing as large shrubs or trees, they produce showy, fragrant flowers that are white, pink, red, purple or yellow. Some forms are evergreen with glossy and leathery leaves and some evergreen types have buds, stems and undersides of leaves that are covered with attractive gold to copper to brown felt-like hairs. There are more than 200 species of Magnolia native to temperate, subtropical and tropical areas of southeastern Asia, eastern North America, Central America, the Caribbean and parts of South America. Many are now grown worldwide because of their beautiful flowers, shape and form.

This waterfall is located just west of Lauterbrunnen in the Bernese Highlands, south of Interlaken. The waterfall drops 297m from a hanging valley that ends in overhanging cliffs above the Weisse Lütschine.
The stream, on reaching the verge of the rocky walls of the valley, forms a cascade so high that it is almost lost in spray before it reaches the level of the valley. After rain, and early in the season (as seen above) when fed by melting snow, Staubbach Falls is very striking. The force of the stream above the fall at such times is sufficient to carry the water clear of the precipice, and the whole mass descends in a condition of liquid dust, between spray and cloud, that sways to-and-fro with the gentlest breeze. Today, 25 August 2026, Dolly Parton (1946-2026) passed away at the age of 80. Her family announced this in a video message on Instagram. Parton was one of the most famous and decidedly likeable country singers America has ever produced. Famous for her high-pitched voice and enormous bosom, Dolly was not only a singer but also an actress, businesswoman and philanthropist. The cause of death has not been disclosed.
Dolly Rebecca Parton was born in 1946 in a simple wooden cabin on the bank of the Little Pigeon River in Tennessee. Her father grew tobacco, her mother took care of the twelve children, of whom Dolly was number four. Thanks to her father Lee, she became a businesswoman; thanks to her mother Avie, a musician, she always said. As an 8-year-old girl, she was already a local country starlet, performing on local radio and regional TV stations, and at just 13 she released her first regionally distributed record: 'Puppy Love' (1959). When she earned her high school diploma in 1964, she left the next day literally for the country music capital, Nashville, where she began singing on the streets in the hope of being discovered. She was 18. By then, she had already been writing her own songs for ten years. Her professional career in the music industry began as a songwriter with evident talent, employed by Combine Publishing, a company that supplied country hits to artists such as Bill Phillips, Hank Williams Jr., and Kitty Wells. They sang Dolly R. Parton's first country hits on the country charts. In 1965, Monument Records signed the then 19-year-old Parton with the plan to turn her into a teen singer in the bubblegum pop category. But when the label heard the hits she had composed for others, she was allowed to try her hand at the country genre. Even before her breakthrough, she married her beloved Carl Dean, who ran a paving company, in 1966, just 20 years old. They would remain inseparable until Dean passed away at the age of 82 in March 2025, after 59 years of marriage. Throughout those years, he managed to stay almost entirely out of the media as Dolly’s husband. The couple themselves remained childless, but five of Dolly’s younger siblings moved in with them and were raised by Carl and Dolly. Meanwhile, the flow began of – eventually – more than two hundred singles and a staggering fifty albums, if you disregard collaborations, live albums, soundtracks, and the nearly 250 compilations. Parton would eventually sell more than one hundred million records.
In her early years, Dolly Parton formed a successful duo with entertainer Porter Wagoner, who also secured her a regular spot on his TV show, The Porter Wagoner Show (even before she had a hit of her own). Several duets with Wagoner were successful singles, but Dolly’s first self-written hit single as a solo artist was 'Just Because I’m a Woman' (1967), a song with lyrics daring for the Nashville of that time regarding a woman’s sexual past and what her lover feels entitled to think of it: ‘My mistakes are no worse than yours, just because I’m a woman.’ Thus, as a fledgling young singer, she became a feminist voice in the lion’s den: country, a bastion of conservative men. They sang the truth to Dolly with a smile: ‘If you don’t love me, leave me – and don’t let it trouble your mind.’ 'The Bridge' (1968) is chilling, sung from the perspective of a young woman who, pregnant and abandoned, sees only one way out. In the songs of the 22-year-old Parton, women’s suffering was sometimes sung about that went far beyond a few tears of heartbreak. She established her name with it and scored such massive country hits that no traditionally minded male record executive could ignore her any longer: 'Joshua' (1971) was her first number one on the country charts. In 1973, she wrote the two songs that time has designated as her most famous, although the chart rankings at the time do not reflect that: 'Jolene' and 'I Will Always Love You'. Both singles reached number one on the country chart, but initially, only 'Jolene' became a modest hit on the Billboard Hot 100. In the following years, 'Jolene' would become a worldwide pop classic on its own merits. Whitney Houston’s cover version (1992) for the film The Bodyguard played a role in the eventual success of 'I Will Always Love You'. Years later, a cassette tape from Parton’s archive proved that she wrote the two songs on the same evening. That is not how she remembered it. ‘A lucrative evening, in hindsight,’ she said.
Dolly Parton had her big breakthrough in 1980 when she landed her first major film role and sang the title song to the top of the global charts: 9 to 5 (Colin Higgins, 1980). The lighthearted feminist comedy was tailor-made for Parton: Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, and herself as three women who take over the power of their sexist boss at the office. She earned a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress. With that, Parton truly became mainstream. More films followed. She starred with Burt Reynolds in The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas (Colin Higgins, 1982), with Sylvester Stallone in Rhinestone (Bob Clark, 1984), with Sally Field in Steel Magnolias (Herbert Ross, 1989), Straight Talk (Barnet Kellman, 1992), and with Queen Latifah in Joyful Noise (Todd Graff, 2012). The singer was also known for her entrepreneurship. Among other things, she was the director of media company Dolly Parton Enterprises. Her production company turned the musicals '9 to 5' (2008) and, more recently, 'Dolly' (2024) into box office successes. Through The Dollywood Company, she ran the Dollywood theme park, which attracts over three million visitors annually, a Dolly water park, and a Dolly-themed hotel. In 2025, she announced the opening of her own museum: Dolly’s Life of Many Colors Museum. However, most importantly, Dolly Parton was an icon of country music and one of the most successful pop women of all time. She had another huge hit with her duet with country star Kenny Rogers, 'Islands in the Stream'. With her collaborations with Emmylou Harris and Linda Ronstadt ('Trio' in 1987 and 'Trio II' in 1999), she won over two generations of serious Americana enthusiasts once again, just as she did with a series of no-frills bluegrass albums, starting with 'The Grass Is Blue' (1999). In life, she was already an American national heritage, a woman who so gracefully infused her feminism with juicy self-mockery that all contradictions instantly evaporated. Conservatives saw in her an ‘all-American girl,’ a cheerful country girl from a poor farming family in Tennessee, who embodied both the national country ideal and the American Dream: rising from abject poverty to stratospheric wealth and fame through her own efforts. Progressives saw in her, besides Dolly, the incorrigibly optimistic philanthropist who, as kitsch queen and mother of the global queer community, could so delightfully poke fun at herself. Recently, the singer had been struggling with health issues, forcing her to cancel shows and take things easier. Despite her age and health problems, Parton remained true to her craft and her audience. Her husband, Carl Dean, with whom she was married for nearly sixty years, passed away in March of last year at the age of 82. "The love we felt for each other for more than sixty years cannot be expressed in words," she said after his passing. The farewell of Dolly Parton will take place in private.
