Palm trees were introduced from Southeast Asia in early 20th century and now is a symbol of the island. The most common palm species is Robe or dwarf date palm (Phoenix roebelenii) that is native to northern Indochina. It is ornamental rather than for agriculture.

The location of the photo is a pasture at the foot of Hachijou Fuji. It used to be a golf course attached to a resort hotel.

I understand that Izu Islands form the boundary between the Pacific Ocean and the Philippine Sea. The latter, however, is regarded part of the former, and few people in Japan use the term Philippine Sea.

The ocean on the east coast of Hachijou-jima should be the Pacific Ocean, while the one on the west coast the Philippine Sea, although Wikipedia describes Hachijou-jima is "in" the Philippine Sea.

Lyall's Larch (Alpine Larch) is a treeline species in Banff National Park, where it comes to the northern limit of its range. A deciduous conifer, it forms cones like a spruce or fir tree but its needles turn yellow in the fall, before dropping off. They add a spectacular burst of colour to high mountain slopes and passes for a couple weeks each September. I made this shot from the Icefields Parkway, but the gold is more intense up close, when viewed through fewer atmospheric layers.

This concludes my Rockies set of images; tomorrow, a return to the prairie and its critters.

...on the road east we met a drover, well over 100km from home, trying to keep his cattle alive on the long paddock. They had been on the road for 26 days.

Drovers are a common sight at present in the outback, where cattle are moved along a highway corridor or stock route (colloquially known as the "long paddock") for feed to save the cattle from a severe drought. Drovers often move cattle hundreds of kilometres to areas that have had rain and there is grass to feed the herd.

Taken back in May, and to be honest, I've no idea as to what it was, not a clue, but the points of light were extremely tiny. Definitely a macro, just wish I could remember 'a macro of what'!

Thank you for visiting. Your comments and/or faves are greatly appreciated.

MLC Centre architecture cannot be overlooked. With elegantly contoured, stark white concrete, white quartz and glass, the façade presents itself as a handsomely moulded sculpture.

Harry Seidler AC QBE is a luminary of Australian architecture. Widely considered as the first architect to fully express the Bauhaus aesthetic here. The MLC Centre remains one of his most definitive works on the Sydney Skyline.

It is currently the fifth tallest building behind the Meriton World Tower (230m), Deutsche Bank Place (240m), Citigroup Centre (243m) and Chifley Tower (244m). The tallest structure in Sydney is still the Sydney Tower at 309m.

The step-like terraces form as heated water moves along the Morris-Mammoth Fault. The hot water carries dissolved calcium and bicarbonate to the surface of the terraces where pressure lessens. Carbon dioxide then escapes as gas and the carbonate combines with calcium to precipitate as travertine

"Love your solitude and try to sing out with the pain it causes you. For those who are near you are far away... and this shows that the space around you is beginning to grow vast.... be happy about your growth, in which of course you can't take anyone with you, and be gentle with those who stay behind; be confident and calm in front of them and don't torment them with your doubts and don't frighten them with your faith or joy, which they wouldn't be able to comprehend. Seek out some simple and true feeling of what you have in common with them, which doesn't necessarily have to alter when you yourself change again and again; when you see them, love life in a form that is not your own and be indulgent toward those who are growing old, who are afraid of the aloneness that you trust.... and don't expect any understanding; but believe in a love that is being stored up for you like an inheritance, and have faith that in this love there is a strength and a blessing so large that you can travel as far as you wish without having to step outside it.”

― Rainer Maria Rilke
