The event series was organised by MA Design Management and Cultures students and was based around five provocations authored by industry experts on important global themes: Digital Disruptions, Architectural Visions, Ageing Populations, Consumer Lifestyles and Cultural Institutions. George Douglass, 25, a Special Olympics speed skater, practices at the Family Ice Center during the rink's Opportunity Skate program. The weekly program provides free ice time and skate rentals to organizations that support people with intellectual or physical disabilities, at-risk youths, seniors and more. The MET & Central Park
The weather forecast said it was to be a good day, and after several weeks of hot and humid weather with an almost daily threat of heavy thunderstorms, it was time to escape the house for a few hours and head into the city. But where to go to was the question. I really didn’t feel much like going downtown, so how about something to the north, and then, why not go to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, haven’t been there in decades. I could take the train into GCT and then a bus uptown, but why ride when it was to be a good day, so I walked, 35 city blocks each way! Well at least I was able to see the sights along the way, and maybe loose a few pounds as a bonus.
The “MET” is quite a place; there are many permanent exhibitions and several visiting (or temporary) exhibits that are all quite interesting. Sometimes it’s a bit like going upstairs to the deepest recesses of your own attic and finding treasures of the past. You can’t possibly see it all at once so it’s best to select one or two “must see” exhibits and save the rest “for another time”. I wanted to see the Greek & Roman sculptures, and the Egyptian Temple of Dendur, and a temporary art exhibit “Portrait of a Family” showing with works of John Singer Sargent and his sister Emily Sargent, which was spectacular. Along the way was a break for lunch along with a chance to rest my legs. After all I still had to walk back down to GCT (another 35 city blocks).
Leaving the MET it was decided to head south back to GCT, but this time by way of the eastern side of New York’s famed Central Park. There’s never a shortage of photo opportunities in New York, and the combination of people and the scenic beauty of the park did not disappoint in the least. It finally felt good to get back on the train and sit down, even if it meant a “change at Jamaica
