i just thought this was funny looking over our forecast for the week and wednesday just says blizzard, normally it would say flurries, snow. i guess they just want us to panic and run to the store again to restock up on stuff we bought before last fridays blizzard. its funny when they say things like this and people just immidiately go out and buy all the milk, eggs, and bread they can. just to be snowed in for one day lol.
Today (Saturday, 10/3/15), despite an absolutely horrible weather forecast 24 volunteers from Clean Bread and Cheese Creek worked with Friends of the Hard Yacht Café to remove over 93 bags of trash from the Peninsula Expressway! The litter removed included three chairs, two propane tanks, a mattress, a suitcase, a baby carriage, a transmission, a shopping cart, lots of construction debris and much more! This trash was removed before it could was into Bear Creek and the Chesapeake Bay! We cannot express how grateful we are for everyone who came out to brave the elements while helping us work toward a cleaner, greener, healthier community and Environment! We would like to extend a special thank you to all the students form St. Timothy’s School who helped us out today as well!!!

After seeing the Weather Channel's forecast for a beautiful sunny day today I decided to load up the ole aluminum boat and head to Patoka Lake to look for loons.
Although the morning started out clear, about halfway to the lake a dense fog slowly enveloped the highway reducing visibility to a couple hundred yards. By the time I reached the lake, the fog had taken over, blotting out the sun and deadening most sound.
Not to be deterred, I launched the boat anyway, GPS and compass in hand and headed out into the lake. Although I could not see a thing, the wind and the water were so still that the only thing breaking the silence was the sound of loons calling to each other in the distance. If you have never heard them before (or seen On Golden Pond!) you are really missing a nice treat. Their call is very unique and is both haunting and beautiful.
After almost 3 hours, the fog began to lift and I was able to get some good looks at some of the 77 loons I counted for the day. Even in winter plumage, they are still one of my favorite birds out on the water.
If the pattern for the last few years holds true, the number of loons on the lake should build to several hundred sometime in the next couple of weeks before they continue on south. If you are in the area, take a look and a listen!
