In need of some purple paint on the tail, FedEx A310-300 N813FD taxis onto the maintenance ramp at Memphis International Airport. This aircraft was first delivered to Singapore Airlines as 9V-STR in August 1989. It was retired to Victorville, California, in March on 2014.

The busiest cargo airline in the world, FedEx Express has become synonymous around the world for its cargo operations, with their origins and namesake beginning with the dedicated cargo airline that began operations in 1973 as Federal Express.

Based from their SuperHub in Memphis, Tennessee; the carrier is one of the few remaining airlines to continue operating the venerable McDonnell Douglas MD-11Fs, the successor to the classic McDonnell Douglas DC-10. Very recently, the carrier have recently retired the last of the modified McDonnell Douglas MD-10s.

Today, FedEx Express continues to operate a sizeable fleet of McDonnell Douglas MD-11Fs with 49 currently in the fleet and they continue to see use on both domestic and international flights, however their number is dwindling with the introduction of Boeing 767-300Fs and Boeing 777Fs.

It is always a pleasure to see the McDonnell Douglas MD-11Fs, especially with their fast landing speed owing to the uniqueness of the airframes wings located more aft of the fuselage, hence their tendency to bounce.

Currently, FedEx Express operates 49 McDonnell Douglas MD-11s, all of which are McDonnell Douglas MD-11Fs.

November Six Three One Foxtrot Echo is one of 49 McDonnell Douglas MD-11Fs operated by FedEx Express, delivered new to Swissair as HB-IWI on 15th November 1991 carrying name of the canton of Uri, later transferring over to Swissair Asia for flights to Taiwan but still operated by Swissair until their collapse on 31st March 2002 when operations transferred to Swiss International Air Lines being renamed Dent Blanche. She was withdrawn from service in June 2004, acquired by FedEx Express on 23rd December 2004 following conversion into a freighter and she is powered by 3 Pratt & Whitney PW4462 engines.

The days of the DC10/MD10 have come to an end for FedEx. Here MD10-30F N306FE awaits its final flight to Victorville, California. This McDonnell Douglas product was the airframe involved in an attempted hijacking by a company pilot on April 7, 1994. Its last revenue flight was YYZ-MEM on December 31, 2022. This was the first DC-10-30F made for Federal Express. Delivered January 1986.
