A march against the exploitation of and racism toward international students in Australia that the governments (both state and federal) continue to allow to exist. International and Australian students from NSW universities (such as Newcastle, UTS, Macquarie, UNSW and Sydney University) rallied together, marching from Sydney University to UTS and on to NSW Parliament House, asking for the government to intervene and change legislation that allows international students to be taken advantage of.
Some basic rights like abolishing the 20-hour work week limit and providing student travel concessions to international students were demanded in chants and songs. At a deeper level though, the protesters are demanding an end to the systematic racism and exploitation of international students, who are increasingly treated more as a means to profit than as students to educate.

Here is the remainder of the photos of my shoe exploits from the past few months.
I still enjoy wearing these regularly. Whereas I've had to glue some of my old shoes back together ( or partly together), these have never been repaired. I jusst let them slowly disintegrate.
New in 1990 or so, the outersoles hardened and crumbled away after a couple of years. The innersoles and cardboard inner midsoles soon followed. The thick foam rubber outer midsoles have been wearing away ever since. And now the leather uppers are rotting and failing.
These were one of the pair I wore to work regularly to work until I retired a few years ago. The holes in the soles were there, but the uppers hadn't started to tear. Few noticed. There were others at work who wore decrepit shoes. I know of two upper managers who both wore Bass penny loafers with giant holes in the leather soles. Their (black) socks would bulge out through the holes. They wore them for years, summer and winter, rain or shine.
Which brings up another item. I was wearing these Exofits today (as I'm writing this) in the rain. (More pictures to follow). One of the few times I ever got a comment about worn footwear, on a rainy day I had worn the Exofits to work, on the train coming home, sitting with my legs crossed fully exposing the sole holes. The guy sitting nearby says don't my wet feet bother me. I reminded him that if I wore flip flops or slides or sandals (or even sneakers with canvas uppers, my feet would be just as wet. His reply? "I guess so".

Our investigations into non-recent child sexual exploitation are ramping up with five suspects arrested in relation to reports of abuse in Oldham between 2011 and 2014.
Detectives in our dedicated CSE Major Incident Team have been working closely with the survivors at the centre of these cases, gathering evidence and intelligence, with unwavering determination to bring child abusers to justice.
This action involved the execution of five warrants simultaneously at addresses in Oldham, Tameside, and Manchester.
These offences follow a disclosure from an Oldham survivor that forms part of a complex and wide-ranging investigation codenamed ‘Operation Sherwood’ which draws on our effective partnership with Oldham Council.
We have previously arrested six suspects as part of this investigation. They were placed on police bail with significant child protection conditions to adhere to, whilst our investigation continues.
The five men arrested this morning remain in custody for questioning.
The suspects are not necessarily all linked, but they collectively relate to four survivors we are supporting.
Assistant Chief Constable Steph Parker, lead for Protecting Vulnerable People, said: “The survivors at the centre of these cases have placed their trust in the GMP of today, and have the confidence to support prosecutions, which we hold to the highest regard.
“We are working closely with them, while they receive tailored support from partnership agencies, moving forward at a pace and in a manner that is right for them.
“Our investigative teams are piecing together all the evidence and taking robust action as soon as we can. Bringing child abusers to justice is why our detectives work so tirelessly day-in day-out. It’s essential we get this right and build strong case files to present the best possible case in court.
“We are now making significant strides in our pursuit and activity is only going to continue ramping up. We will not allow time to be a barrier to justice and any abusers in Oldham or beyond should be warned that we are coming for them.”

i try very hard never to exploit or demean anyone when i photograph them. however, when i run across someone begging, i feel it's reasonable to engage them equally.
in this man's case, i was pretty hungover (and was on my way to a chicken soup brunch). he rattled his can at me, so i pulled my camera out of my jacket pocket. he put his hands up and made a "no photo" gesture. i lowered the camera and started to walk away. he rattled his can again. i thought for a second, dug some change out of my pocket, and motioned to him with it while asking if it was okay now. he seemed more agreeable, the yuan or two clinked in his cup (which he tried to hide behind his right leg), and his demeanor changed from pitiable to pleasant.

Attis-Amorino, 1435-40
Donatello
Bronze
Donatello exploited the strength and qualities of bronze to create this joyous and animated figure. Its name is inspired by its open breeches, which suggest the Phrygian shepherd Attis, and the wings of a young cupid (amorino) on its back. But it also has the tail of a faun, the winged feet of Mercury and a snake associated with Hercules, making its identity unclear. Its belt is decorated with poppy pods, a symbol of the Bartolini family who probably commissioned the statue.*

Donatello: Sculpting the Renaissance

This first major UK exhibition to explore the exceptional talents of the Renaissance master Donatello, arguably the greatest sculptor of all time, presented a fresh vision of the artist and his influence on subsequent generations.
Donatello (about 1386 – 1466) is arguably the greatest Italian Renaissance sculptor. He revolutionised sculpture both through his inventive treatment of imagery, and his mastery of an extraordinary range of materials – including marble and stone, bronze, wood, terracotta and stucco as well as unusual mixed media. He rarely repeated himself, striving for innovation and never quenching his thirst for experimentation.
Born in Florence around 1386, Donatello is one of the most inventive and influential artists of the Renaissance. Throughout a career lasting over 60 years, his extraordinary sculpture was at the heart of the revolution in art and culture taking place in 15th-century Italy.
Always at the cutting edge, Donatello combined the growing interest in ancient Greece and Rome with familiar traditions. He used a wide variety of materials and techniques, creating innovative sculptures to adorn public and private settings. Through exceptional ingenuity and emotional insight, he captured the essence of the human experience in sculptural form and paved the way for sculptors and painters alike.
This exhibition explores Donatello's creativity and unique vision, his workshop practices and collaborations, and his enduring impact on artists across the centuries.
