The St. Martin's Church is now the main Protestant church of the city of Sindelfingen and one of the oldest catholic churches in Baden-Württemberg. The consecration was in 1083 It belonged to the 1477 resolution pen Sindelfingen.

A first church was probably already in the 7th Century at this point. This is concluded from the main patronal feast of St. Martin, who was very popular in the Carolingian period. In addition, it was found during excavations in a Christian cemetery dating from the 8th Century.

In 1477 moved to the patron, Count Eberhard im Bart of Württemberg, the Canons of St. Martin from Sindelfingen to Tübingen. Thus, the economic basis for the establishment of the University of Tübingen was created. The Sindelfingen Provost became the first Tübingen University Chancellor, the Sindelfingen benefice fed the Tübingen professors.

Die Kirche wurde in der traditionellen Basilikaform gebaut. Der Chorraum war ursprünglich als Hochchor mit einer Krypta gestaltet.

Er schließt mit drei Apsiden ab. Der romanische Turm war ursprünglich ein freistehender Campanile (Glockenturm) und ist 42 m hoch.

Das Dach des Turmes und die Sakristei wurden erst 1270 in gotischer Zeit unter Chorherr Konrad von Wurmlingen gefertigt.

Die Turmform, die Pfeilerarkaden sowie die Gliederung der drei Apsiden deuten auf italienische Einflüsse hin.

Die Martinskirche ist ein sehr bedeutender romanischer Bau von durchaus eigener Prägung. Es besteht stilistische Verwandt- schaft zum Dom in Gurk. Eine Krypta mit einem darüber liegenden Hochchor wurde 1576/77 abgebrochen.

Im Jahr 1477 verlegte der Schirmherr, Graf Eberhard im Bart von Württemberg, das Chorherrenstift St. Martin von Sindelfingen nach Tübingen. Damit war die wirtschaft- liche Basis für die Gründung der Tübinger Universität geschaffen. Der Sindelfinger Propst wurde der erste Tübinger Universitätskanzler, die Sindelfinger Pfründe ernährten die Tübinger Professoren.

Die Kirche diente sowohl dem Stift als auch der örtlichen Kirchengemeinde. Bereits 1540 hatte Sindelfingen den ersten evangelisch-lutherischen Pfarrer namens Martinus.

Die Martinskirche ist heute die evangelische Hauptkirche der Stadt Sindelfingen und eine der ältesten katholischen Kirchen in Baden-Württemberg.

Eine erste Kirche stand wohl bereits im 7. Jahrhundert an dieser Stelle.

Die Kirchweihe war 1083. Sie gehörte zum 1477 aufgelösten Stift Sindelfingen.

Das Stift Sindelfingen war ein mittelalterliches Chorherrenstift in Sindelfingen, vom 11. Jahrhundert an zunächst als weltliches Chorherrenstift, das 1476 vom Herzog von Württemberg aus Anlass der Gründung von Universität und Sankt-Georgs-Stift in Tübingen aufgelöst und größtenteils dorthin verlegt wurde. Aus dem verbleibenden Teil des Stiftsvermögens wurde ein reguliertes Augustiner-Chorherren-Stift gebildet, das bis zur Reformation 1535 bestand.

Das Stift erwarb schon bald umfangreiche Güter in der Umgebung von Sindelfingen.

Im 13. Jahrhundert wurde das Stift mehrmals heimgesucht, besonders von den Grafen von Tübingen-Böblingen, die 1260 sogar einige Stiftshöfe niederbrannten. Daneben sah sich das Stift durch die Sindelfinger Stadtgründung 1263 durch Graf Rudolf den Scheerer von Tübingen-Herrenberg in seinen Rechten gefährdet.

Im 15. Jahrhundert hatten einige berühmte Gelehrte, darunter Johannes von Bottwar, Professor in Paris, Pfründen in Sindelfingen inne. 1477 löste Graf Eberhard im Bart von Württemberg das Stift auf und bildete daraus die Universität Tübingen, das Sankt-Georg-Stift in Tübingen und aus den davon verbleibenden Resten ein Augustiner-Chorherrenstift in Sindelfingen. Acht der zehn Chorherren wurden erste Professoren in Tübingen, darunter der erste Rektor Johannes Vergenhans, Propst Johannes Degen behielt auch im Tübinger Stift das Amt des Propstes, woran nun das des Kanzlers der Universität gebunden war.

Das in Sindelfingen verbliebene Stift, dem neben zwei Chorherren ein Drittel der Erträge blieb, galt zwar immer noch als reich, erreichte aber nie die Bedeutung des alten Stifts und wurde schließlich 1535 mit der Einführung der Reformation aufgelöst. Das Stiftsvermögen wurde vom Land Württemberg im Anschluss durch die Stiftsverwaltung Sindelfingen verwaltet, die 1806 ihre Selbständigkeit verlor.

"Calw was first mentioned in records in 1075. In the 11th century the town grew around the older castle of the Grafen (Earls) of Calw. In the Middle Ages Calw was an important commercial town especially for the trade of cloth and leather."

Um 1050 gründete Graf Adalbert II. (von Calw) an seinem Hauptsitz Sindelfingen ein benediktinisches Doppelkloster.

Doch schon kurze Zeit später verlegte er die Mönche und Nonnen nach Hirsau und rief stattdessen ein Chorherrenstift ins Leben, für das er auf Teilen seines Herrenhofs die Kirche St. Martin zu errichten begann

. Wegen des Hauptpatroziniums des in karolingischer Zeit beliebten Heiligen geht man indes von einer weit älteren kirchlichen Tradition am Ort aus.

Tatsächlich ist ein christlicher Friedhof aus dem 8. Jh. ergraben worden.

Auf eine anfängliche vita communis scheinen belegte Einrichtungen wie ein Kreuzgang oder ein Refektorium hinzudeuten, doch löste sich dieses Gemeinschaftsleben wohl spätestens im 13. Jh. auf. Die Zahl der Kanonikate ist bis zur 2. Hälfte des 15. Jh. nicht überliefert. Damals waren es zehn. Hinzu kamen noch zehn Kaplaneien und die Propstpfründe. Statuten aus dem Jahr 1297 regelten die innere Ordnung des Stifts. Sie wurden 1420 erneuert und erweitert. Zunächst lag die Stiftsvogtei bei den Grafen von Calw, von denen sie um 1131 an Welf VI. überging. Ihn könnten die Staufer beerbt haben, die vielleicht die Vogtei im staufisch-welfischen Thronstreit an ihre Anhänger, die Pfalzgrafen von Tübingen, weitergaben.

Die Tübinger standen nachweislich seit 1216/43 in enger Beziehung zum Stift. Mehrfach beraubten sie es freilich, vor 1260 wurden zudem die Chorherrenkurien von ihnen niedergebrannt, 1281 der Propst gefangen gesetzt.

Um 1310/20 ging die Vogtei an die Herren von Rechberg und von diesen 1351/69 an die Württemberger über, bei denen sie verbleiben sollte.

Württemberg machte im 15. Jh. seinen Einfluss auf die Zusammensetzung des Kapitels geltend: War das Stift bis zum Ausgang des 14. Jh. niederadelig dominiert und fanden sich sogar auch Hochadelige unter den Chorherren, so setzte sich im Verlauf des 15. Jh. das bürgerliche Element durch.

In der Hauptsache stammten die Kleriker aus dem stiftsnahen Umfeld, dem Bereich Schönbuch und Gäu. In Sindelfingen selbst besaß das Stift vor allem den nördlich an die 1263 gegründete Stadt anschließenden Stiftsbezirk.

Die Kirchen zu Weilimdorf (1243), Dilgshausen mit Leonberg (1277), Darmsheim (1342/1426), Dagersheim (1345), Tailfingen (1352), Feuerbach (1396/1421), Neckartailfingen (vor 1421/28), Grötzingen (vor 1435/55) sowie Vaihingen a. d. Fildern (1439) waren dem Stift inkorporiert. In über 30 Orten im Neckar-Schönbuch-Gebiet verfügte es zudem über Güter oder Einkünfte.

Das Stift war so im 15. Jh. eines der wohlhabendsten im württembergischen Raum, und ab 1442 fiel ihm im Uracher Landesteil vollends eine kirchliche Führungsposition zu.

Das mochte Graf Eberhard V. von Württemberg dazu veranlassen, mit der Genehmigung seiner Mutter Mechthild, zu deren Widdum Sindelfingen gehörte, die Verlegung der Propstei und von acht Kanonikaten samt Pfründen sowie von zwei Dritteln der Distributionen an die Tübinger Georgskirche zu betreiben, um damit zur Realisierung seiner Hochschulpläne ein Universitätsstift zu gründen.

Aus dem in Sindelfingen verbleibenden Vermögensrest sollte dagegen ein reguliertes Chorherrenstift geschaffen werden. Die Kurie willigte darin 1476 ein, 1477 wurde die Gütertrennung vollzogen. Seither bestand in Sindelfingen eine - anfänglich sieben Mitglieder zählende - klosterähnliche Niederlassung von Augustiner-Chorherren der strengen Windesheimer Kongregation.

Die Kanoniker Heinrich von Capella sowie Konrad von Wurmlingen sind als Verfasser einer Stiftschronik bekannt.

Unter den Chorherren des 15. Jh. finden sich etliche Gelehrte wie die Pariser Professoren Johannes von Bottwar oder Johannes Spenlin oder die Heidelberger Hochschullehrer Georg Schienlin, Konrad Menckler oder Johann Heckbach. Insbesondere war hier bis zur Stiftsverlegung eine beachtliche Zahl studierter Kleriker-Juristen, an ihrer Spitze Propst Heinrich Tegen, bepfründet, die dem Stift den Charakter eines Personalreservoirs für landesherrliche Dienste oder gar eines frühen "Zentrums landesherrlichen Beamtentums" gaben.

Die Stiftskirche diente als Sindelfingens Pfarrkirche. Zunächst versah wohl der Propst selbst die Pfarrei, doch wurde sie vermutlich bald einem Chorherren oder Vikar übertragen. Die Statuten von 1420 sprechen von Prozessionen durch den Kreuzgang des Stifts zum Chor und durch den Friedhof.

Die Augustiner-Chorherren wurden 1486 in die Bruderschaft der Augustiner-Chorfrauen von Inzigkofen aufgenommen und verbrüderten sich 1490 mit den Augustinerinnen zu St. Ursula in Tübingen.

Wendelin Steinbach vertrat sie 1492 auf der Meersburger Synode. Auf eine religiöse Bedeutung des Stifts in früher Zeit könnte die Teilnahme Propst Heinrich von Hailfingens an Konzil und Reichstag zu Würzburg (1287) hinweisen.

Um 1500 stand es anscheinend um die Ordnung der Augustiner-Chorherren nicht zum besten. Gleichwohl verfügten sie über einen ansehnlichen Wohlstand. Ihre Niederlassung wird um 1525 als "rich Kloster" bezeichnet, erlitt im Bauernkrieg aber mancherlei Schaden.

1534 Beginn der Reformation.

Die Chorherren verweigerten sich mit einer Ausnahme dem neuen Glauben und erhielten außer in einem Fall gegen Verzicht auf ihre Rechte ein Leibgeding ausgesetzt.

Die offizielle Aufhebung des Stifts erfolgte Anfang 1536.

Die Gebäude des "Klosters" wurden seitdem zu Lager- und Verwaltungszwecken genutzt und teilweise abgerissen.

Die Sindelfinger Martinskirche

Wohl auf Teilen des in Sindelfingen befindlichen Herrenhofs wurde in der 2. Hälfte des 11. Jh. mit der Errichtung der Martinskirche begonnen. Vielleicht bezieht sich die zu 1083 überlieferte Weihe auf eine Grundsteinlegung oder die Einbringung eines Altarfundaments. In einem zweiten Bauabschnitt wurde die Krypta vollendet und 1100 geweiht. Kurz nach 1130 stellte man dann die Kirche fertig: Sie erhielt einen Hochchor, Pfeilerarkaden im Mittelschiff mit einer darauf ruhenden hölzernen Flachdecke, die als eine der ältesten in Baden-Württemberg erhalten und auf das Fällungsjahr 1131 zu datieren ist, und - vielleicht erst nach dem Abschluss des Baus - einen campanileartigen Turm. Turm- und Pfeilerform wie auch die Gliederung der drei Apsiden, in die das Kirchenschiff im Osten ausläuft, werden durch die Kontakte Welfs VI. nach Italien erklärt . Aus seinen Tagen stammen wohl auch die Türflügel am Westportal mit ihren reichen Beschlägen, die auf eine Gerichtsstätte an dieser Stelle hinweisen könnten. Renovierungen des 19. und 20. Jh. entfernten alle nachromanischen Bauteile und Zutaten, so dass sich dem heutigen Besucher einer der schönsten romanischen Kirchenräume im weiten Umkreis bietet.
