[ENG] The origin of the Pazo de Rubianes is a 12th century fortress tower in which D. García Caamaño -founder of Vilagarcía de Arousa city- built his residence at the beginning of the 15th century. In the 18th century, the Lord of the House of Rubianes, Mr. Jacobo Ozores, upon returning from his exile in France, rebuilt the Pazo that we know today. The winery, stables from the 15th century are the oldest buildings that are preserved in their original state. It has an area of 70 Ha in which there is a French garden, an English garden, a botanical park with more than 4,500 specimens of camellias, and other centenary trees of magnolias, cryptomerias, camphors, araucarias, oaks, eucalyptus ... and a 25 Ha vineyard of Albariño grapes, the largest in the Salnés region. More photos in the album Pazo de Rubianes, Galicia (Spain).

Gaomei was called Gaomi in the Qing Dynasty and was renamed during the Japanese occupation. The wetlands here are over 300 hectares, but the area is only 1/10 of Dadu River wetlands. The geography is divided into 7 categories, which results in diversified organisms in this area. Gaomei Wetlands is one of the few places that has wild ducks.

Despite the small area, Gaomei Wetlands have special soils mixed with mud and sand. Ecology here breeds diversified organisms of both plants and animals. Research shows that animals here include birds, fishes, crabs and invertebrates.

THE CHURCH OF SAINT JOHN THE BAPTIST

The church of San Giovanni Battista was built between 1244 and 1307, the date inscribed on a rock in the second column on the left looking towards the altar. Remodeled in the Baroque period and more recently between 1963 and 1964, it is a splendid example of Genoese Ligurian Gothic.

The façade is made of alternating vestments of white marble and dark green serpentine, with a slightly splayed pointed portal, flanked by a double pair of marble columns and surmounted by a lunette with an 18th century fresco depicting the Baptism of Christ. The splendid central rose window in white marble is a splendid example of ornate Gothic, attributed to Matteo and Pietro da Campiglio. From the central button, eighteen smooth and twisted columns radiate alternating from which intertwined trefoil arches branch off.

With a basilica plan with three naves, it has a progressive narrowing of the width of the aisles towards the entrance, with the dual effect of creating a perspective illusion and favoring the propagation of sound waves. Inside are preserved the baptismal font from 1360, a canvas of the Madonna del Rosario from the school of Luca Cambiaso, a painting depicting the Crucifixion by an unknown artist, probably a Genoese painter from the 17th century and the high altar from 1734. One of the columns bears an inscription engraved in medieval characters.

The bell tower with Ghibelline battlements rises alongside the apse area, an ancient medieval control tower with a rectangular plan, opened by Gothic mullioned windows with arches decorated with denticles, raised in the 15th century and remodeled in the 18th century after an earthquake.

ENG: My absolute highlight was a visit to the liberation hall in Kelheim. Even more great pictures from here, come the next days.

The Befreiungshalle "Hall of Liberation" is a Neoclassical monument on the Michelsberg hill above the town of Kelheim in Bavaria, Germany. It stands upstream of Regensburg on the river Donau at the confluence of the Donau and the Altmühl, i.e. the Rhine-Main-Donau Canal. It was commissioned by King Ludwig I of Bavaria to commemorate the victory over Napoleon in the liberation war of 1813-15. The opening ceremony was on the 18 October 1863.

ENG: The Wieskirche is a remarkably beautifully furnished pilgrimage church which belongs to the Steingaden parish and is located in the Wies district, also known as the Bavarian "Pfaffenwinkel". The complete name of the Wieskirche is pilgrimage church to the Scourged Saviour on the Wies.

Today's building was built from 1745 to 1754 in rococo style. The church is located in the diocese of Augsburg and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983. Patron saint of the church is St. Joseph.

A special feature of the "Wieskirche" are the cupola frescoes by Johann Baptist Zimmermann. The foundation of the church goes back to a pilgrimage which existed since 1739. It originated from the veneration of a statue of the scourged Saviour. The statue and the cupola painting are regarded as today's highlights.

[ENG] The citadel of the Alhambra, located on the hill of al-Sabika, in Granada (Spain), is one of the most important architectural complexes of the Middle Ages and the greatest exponent of Islamic art in the West.

The building at No. 72 Des Voeux Road Central is four-storey high. It is a typical verandah-type shophouse where the front façade projects over the pavement and is supported by two columns to form a covered walkway. It is easily identifiable by the five plastered plaques bearing the Chinese name“德榮大押” on the front façade facing Des Voeux Road Central and the side elevation facing Man Yee Lane (萬宜里). The wall of the side elevation is finished with plaster marked with faux horizontal joint lines. There are altogether 15 metal-framed windows on the side elevation, with one row of four situated slightly higher than the others, which are believed to be the windows for the internal staircase. On the ground floor at the rear elevation is an enclosed backyard. A flagpole used to sit on a short stepped base on the left-hand side of the roof, but it was removed sometime between 1980s and 1990s and only the base remains now.

The building is situated at the intersection of Des Voeux Road Central and Man Yee Lane. Its location on the corner provides a side entrance, catering to customers who wish to avoid being seen entering the pawnshop from the main street.

The unique setting and some iconic features of a traditional pawnshop can still be seen inside the shop on the ground floor today. The main hall features a wooden “shy screen”(遮醜板), in an L-shape, blocking the view inside from the main door and side entrance to protect customers’ privacy. Behind the screen is a high counter that divides the front and back of the shop, where the pawnbroker serves customers. The height of the counter allows the pawnbroker to have a full view of the shop to ensure security. However, both the wooden screen and the finishes of the high counter are relatively new, following recent renovations carried out on the ground floor.

Security is a prime concern for this building, as evidenced by the verandahs on the upper floors, all of which are fitted with green metal grills to safeguard the pawnshop from burglars. Of particular interest are the coin motifs along the bottom of the metal grills, adding some decorative details to the functional design of the building.

The original built form of the building, including the footprint and the verandahs with their supporting columns, has been retained. Various renovations have been carried out over the years on both the exterior and interior of the building on the ground floor, such as the supporting columns and all the walls have been refurbished with new stone tiles and the floor has been laid with new modern tiles.

The changes seem to be mainly confined to the ground floor, whereas the exterior of the upper floors has remained intact. The only exception is that the figure “1940” that was previously painted on the roof parapet has now been removed. Overall, the building has been kept in a generally authentic condition in terms of its built form and original appearance. The building is an example of traditional pawnshop occupying an entire pre-war shophouse. The ground floor still opens for business, while the upper floors, which were previously used to store large pawned items, seem to be vacant. Pre-war shophouses that are entirely dedicated to a single pawnshop are becoming increasingly rare in Hong Kong as a result of urban development.

ENG: Built between 1884 and 1894 in the Tiergarten district in the neo-Renaissance style by the architect Paul Wallot, the building on the left bank of the River Spree housed both the Reichstag of the German Empire and the Reichstag of the Weimar Republic. Initially, the Federal Council of the Reich also met there. The Reichstag, democratically elected according to the constitution of 1919, met for the first time in this building on 24 June 1920. After severe damage caused by the Reichstag fire of 1933 and the Second World War, the building was restored in a modernized form in the 1960s and fundamentally redesigned from 1991 to 1999. On April 19, 1999, the keys were handed over to the President of the Bundestag Wolfgang Thierse. Since then, the German Bundestag has met there.
