Norfolk Southern operated N&W A class 2-6+6-4 steam locomotive # 1218, led Railfan Excursion Train is being hauled by three EMD diesel locomotives on this branch line portion of the trip to Crossville, Tennessee, October 1987. The steam locomotive was cut off at the junction (Harriman) where this branch line connected with the main line. The train is crossing over one of the numerous trestles and bridges found on this mountain line. There was much Fall beauty to be seen on this trip.

A rather fine item of industrial photography on the cover of this c1960 English language leaflet issued to show the full range of industrial diesel engines built by the company. The factory dated back to 1840 being the Maschinenfabrik Augsburg AG prior to merger with the Maschinenbau-Aktiengesellscaft Nürnberg in 1898 that formed the Maschinenfabrik Augsburg-Nürnberg AG, better known as M.A.N. At the time of printing the Augsburg works manufactured both diesel engines as well as printing presses; the latter had been built here since 1845 with the first rotary newspaper presses manufactured in 1873. The real claim to fame was the construction of, between 1893-1895, the world's first experimental diesel engine under the guidance of the inventor Rudolf Diesel.

The leaflet notes that the company employs 7000 workers in the Diesel Engine Division in Augsburg as well as others in the subsidiary factories in Nürnberg and Hamburg.

No open level crossing controlled by lights then. The crew operated the gates and closed them behind the train. On a chilly 16 April 1977 no 27 101 has just arived with its train from Fort William. One wonders how much steam heat reached the back of the train on that journey.

This year, I went with eldest son to the annual event "Sporen naar het verleden". In addition to its own locs, the guests of this year were the steam locomotive Tom of the Hoogovens Stoom IJmuiden and the locomotive 8 "Ooievaar" of the SHM. Next to these the Omc909 also made some rides. Several freight trains were also running, which had my mayor interest. It was a very successful event.

Western Maryland Railway DF15 class EMD BL-2 diesel electric locomotive # 81, is seen on display at the Mount Clare Shop & Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Museum in Baltimore, Maryland, August 1988. The EMD BL-2 locomotives were built in the late 1940's, and they are a rather unusual locomotive in their appearance, because it was the cross between the full car-body cab units of the era, but incorporated improved views for the crew as was to be provided by the new GP series of hood style locomotives, such as the GP-7. In total I believe that only 59 on these locomotives were built and that includes the single BL-1. You can see that the Western Maryland improved the original bulb style headlight with the installation of twin sealed beam lights. You might also notice that numerous old and historic buildings are situated in this area.

As a full-time father and husband I hardly make pictures of regular trains. Almost only when the SSN or VSM has one of their rare main line trips, I am able to catch some regular trains too. So what I catch with my camera of the NS (or other companies) trains is often a side catch of steam or museum material passing by. This time the final Plandampf Event in the Werratal between Meiningen an Eisenach
