In spite of the devastatingly rapid urban sprawl motivated by Utah Valley's 21st century tech boom, there is about a half mile of track between Provo and Springville where if you face the right direction and squint hard enough it still looks rural, a microcosmic remnant of the open land filled in with ugly mcmansions and precast warehouses in the last decade. The Roper to Helper manifest inches down the mainline keeping a wary eye out for switching moves made on the Ironton industrial lead. 13 September 2023.

Looking at this superficially, you might wonder why such an item features in the Science Museum. However, the clue is its age - 93 years old.

Still not there? Well in 1931 a debate was raging in some circles in the UK about whether petrol, diesel or steam was the way ahead for lorries. At the time, most truck makers favoured petrol. But Foden's prototype F1 flat-bed proved cleaner than steam and more economical than petrol and thus the future was born.

The Foden company had started by manufacturing steam traction engines in Cheshire in the late 1880s. They also became renowned for their steam wagons and were the world's largest makers of steam road vehicles. However, the final Foden steam vehicle was built in 1934.

The F1 had a similar chassis to the last steam wagons, but Foden married a Gardner 5L2 five-cylinder diesel engine to it. The Gardner company, in Manchester, had pioneered the high-speed diesel engine for road use in Britain and had an outstanding reputation for quality.

When introduced into commercial service, the F1 and similar lorries would have been used for short-to-medium journeys, largely complementing the railways. However, by the 1960s articulated diesel lorries with large-capacity trailers were using the developing motorway network to travel across country and even across continents, supplanting rail for much long-distance haulage.

New York Ontario & Western EMD F3 locomotive # 502 & another, are seen leading a stopped National Railway Historical Society railfan excursion train that's stopped in the New Haven Railroad yard at Maybrook, New York, ca early 1950's. This yard stop probably also provided for a tour of the yard area, beside the excursion on the NYO&W route. In the background you can see some New Haven Railroad ALCO FA-1 & FB-1 locomotives. The society members are for the most part well dressed as compared to the clothes that may be wearing today on such a trip. The cars used for the excursion train were most likely borrowed and may belong to the New Haven Railroad. The EMD F3 locomotives are one of the earlier phases with the chicken wire situated over the side vents,

The afternoon Service Towards Lucknow Aishbagh Arrives With IZN YDM4 6528 from Tikunia ( Train Name - Tikunia - Aishbagh Passenger )

I was to board the same train towards Lucknow and somehow captured it since I knew it had a stop of 5 minutes at the station so , Hence I got enough time for the click.

YDM4 Class is one of the threatened species of Indian Railways since only a few Meter-Gauge Railway Lines remain in India , A country which Once used to have one of the world's largest Meter Gauge Networks under British Empire and the meter gauge network that used to exist from North to South and East To West Of India is now depleted and left to a few places which will soon close down and the process of Gauge Conversion to Broad Gauge will take over.

Some Info On The YDM4 Locomotive :-

Co-Co diesel electrics originally from Alco (1961-1964), later manufactured by DLW (1968-1993). The initial batch of 55 from Alco were used for evaluation and comparison with a similar batch of General Motors locos. The Alcos were chosen as the preferred MG main-line diesel locos. Alco model is DL535A. Originally manufactured with only vacuum brakes and dynamic braking, no air brakes. Rated at 1350/1200hp. Max. speed 100km/h. YDM-4A are identical to YDM-4, except that they were supplied by MLW (1964) -- the Canadian batch consisting of about 99 locos. Some of the MLW locos do not have the 'A' suffix in the class designation.

Ahmedabad was the main centre for these locos. A few were hauling local trains in the Secunderabad-Bodhan section in 1997, and are reported [8/00] to be working around Mysore, Villupuram, etc. Some from the Guntakal shed are still [7/02] hauling trains on the Pakala-Guntakal-Bellary route. Some are thought to be at Gandhidham after gauge conversion left Gandhidham - Palanpur an isolated MG line.

DLW has exported some (15 each) of these to Tanzania and Vietnam (1976-1985), and to Bangladesh (2000?). The ones for Bangladesh were classed YDM-4BR and had dual cabs, a change achieved without modifying the length of the loco. This variant turned out later to have major cooling problems.

Malaysian railways (KTM) acquired 39 used YDM-4's from IR in 1996. It is not clear if they were leased or sold. Of these, 14 were returned to India by 1999. In Malaysia they retained their IR road numbers (between 6352 and 6725).

Builders: Alco, MLW, DLW

Engine: Alco 251B-6 (Alco/MLW), Alco 251D-6 (DLW); 6 cyl., 4-stroke, inline

Transmission: Electric (DC-DC, in contrast to most other locos that were AC-DC).

Axle load: 12t. Bogies: Co-Co trimount.

Fuel capacity: 3000l

I took these Photographs on October 17 2004 while I was on a Business Trip in Grand Rapids Michigan. I arrived on Sunday, so I was able to send my Day taking Photographs around the Grand Rapids Metropolitan Area. I took this Photograph from the end of Judd Avenue, which ended in a Cul-de-sac near the entrance to CSX Wyoming Yard. There is a White Fuel Tank on the extreme Right of my Photograph near the Blue Locomotive.

It shows Two Canadian Pacific GE AC4400CW Number 9500 (second Locomotive Number Unknown) in CSX Wyoming Yard in Grand Rapids, Michigan awaiting it's next assignment.

The American Association of Railroads Reporting Marks for the Tank Car is NRTX, which refers to "Music City Star" as the owner. The Locomotives were too far away for my untrained eye to recognize. The Tower has a Wind Sock Attached to it, why I don't know !

I took this Photograph with my Minolta Maxxim 5000 Single Lens Reflex Camera with Color Print Film. The Film Processor (aka: Kodak) provided me with a Picture CD v6.0

A rather fine item of industrial photography on the cover of this c1960 English language leaflet issued to show the full range of industrial diesel engines built by the company. The factory dated back to 1840 being the Maschinenfabrik Augsburg AG prior to merger with the Maschinenbau-Aktiengesellscaft Nürnberg in 1898 that formed the Maschinenfabrik Augsburg-Nürnberg AG, better known as M.A.N. At the time of printing the Augsburg works manufactured both diesel engines as well as printing presses; the latter had been built here since 1845 with the first rotary newspaper presses manufactured in 1873. The real claim to fame was the construction of, between 1893-1895, the world's first experimental diesel engine under the guidance of the inventor Rudolf Diesel.

The leaflet notes that the company employs 7000 workers in the Diesel Engine Division in Augsburg as well as others in the subsidiary factories in Nürnberg and Hamburg.

This year I went with my eldest son to the Port Days in Rotterdam for the second time; Usually we were at the Veluwse Stoomtrein Maatschappij to watch steam trains 'Back to Then', or at the Sanicole air show in Belgium. A fantastic experience these port days. Many demonstrations by the pilotage service, the Royal Rescue Society and the Marine Corps. We were amazed. The Port Days are certainly planned again for the coming years.
