On the night of 6 to 7 February, a snowstorm swept the country. With a code red, all traffic was subsequently disrupted or came to a complete standstill. This is also the case with the railways. Towards the end of the week, train traffic was slowly picking up again and the weather, although still cold, was getting better and better. So a good reason to go out with my oldest son to make some pictures.

New Haven Railroad ALCO DER-2a class FA-1 locomotive 0418, along with another FA-1 locomotive 0428, with both wearing the Alpert paint scheme lead a manifest freight train along side of a stainless steel washboard MUT at Stamford, Connecticut, 5-15-1967. The Stamford area was one of the busiest locations on the railroad according to tower operators. You can see the engineers arm in his cab window.

97304 “John Tiley” and 37516 “Loch Laidon” pass the boatyard at Frongoch with day 1 of Steam Dreams‘ 1Z45 08:31 Paddington to Pwllheli “The Cambrian Coast Express.” A rogue cloud came along, but thankfully I got 304 in some sun. 1Z45 was scheduled to have a 40 minute recess at Mach, but this got amended on the day for a 5 minute stop. In oractice, it stopped at the station for 15 minutes, allowing me to leapfrog it.

97304 “John Tiley” and 97302 pass a flooded Cilcewydd with the heavily-delayed 6W70 Bescot to Talerddig ballast train. With ERTMS being dead due to the wet weather, it's surprising it still managed to run.

97302 and 97304 “John Tiley” approach Newtown station with the return 6W70 Talerddig to Bescot empty ballast train, having dropped ballast north of Talerddig cutting.

BACK IN THE USA!

Also Lokomotiven mit besondere Lackierung vergangener Bahngesellschaften.

Preserved Class 40 D213 Andania heads the 'Bristol Forty' Lancaster - Bristol (TM) - Lancaster trip south, at speed, through the Gloucestershire countryside on September 13.

Andania is carrying a four-disc headcode, usually reserved for the Royal Train. Presumably this was in acknowledgement of the period of mourning being observed by the nation in recognition of the death of Her Majesty The Queen.

Running as 40013 in BR days, the locomotive was named Andania in 1962 after a Cunard Line ship.

212 370 hauls its short engineers train from the work site at Kalk yard having completed ballast removal at a re-laying site captured by Paul. The Class 212 locos were virtually eradicated under DB with only 14, of this once numerous class, still in service with DB. Under the open access arrangement many new operators saw them as ideal for their operations with around 56 being re-instated. 370, of 1965 vintage, is owned and operated by EFW a company, described as, being formed by rail fans who have restored the majority of ex-DB locos into old DB liveries.

New Haven Railroad DER-1c ALCO DL-109s are seen at the end of the line in their operation at a yard locomotive service area with the Old Colony Lines being shut down 6-30-1959. These old dual service DL-109 locomotives provided service for both freight and passenger trains through the war years with many of them lasting from 1941 until 1959, with just a few remaining engines providing service into July of that year. As for the yard, its location was not provided, but most likely is either at Providence or possibly at Boston.

Every year the National Steam Train Day is organized during Ascension Day. We can usually be found at the SGB or the RTM. This time, based on photos I had seen in Facebook, I wanted to go to the VSM. Together with my eldest son we went to Loenen, where we almost had a private show of shunting freight wagons. We spent a large part of the morning at the VSM, after which we went to Zwolle in the afternoon to view the 1700 in service there.

97304 “John Tiley” and 37516 “Loch Laidon” pass Llanystumdwy – between Criccieth and Pwllheli – with day 1 of Steam Dreams‘ 1Z45 08:31 Paddington to Pwllheli “The Cambrian Coast Express.” I've been itching to do this shot since some time, but it needed the right train running at the right time of year at the right time of day. The position of the sun was just perfect. In the backgrond can be seen Criccieth Castle. The castle dates from the 1230s during the days of Llywelyn the Great. Milwaukee Road ALCO DL-109 # 14, is seen along with two girls posing in overalls on the nose for an advertisement photo, ca 1940's. These ALCO DL-109 locomotives were very distinctive in their Art Deco styling and applied paint scheme. The advertising girls don't hurt the scene either! The twin headlights with their special housings on the nose of these locomotives make them standout. These locomotives were used in Hiawatha service and for other trains.

As a full-time father and husband I hardly make pictures of regular trains. Almost only when the SSN or VSM has one of their rare main line trips, I am able to catch some regular trains too. So what I catch with my camera of the NS (or other companies) trains is often a side catch of steam or museum material passing by. This time the final Plandampf Event in the Werratal between Meiningen an Eisenach
