Due to Corona and family circumstances, we were unable to join Plandampf in the Werratal. But after so many years, the blood creeps where it can't go. That is why my father, my eldest son and I decided to travel to the former East Germany during the May holidays, to enjoy narrow-gauge steam.
First we visited the Zittauer Schmalspurbahn, where due to work on the Mandaubrücke in Zittau itself, only the route from Zittau Vorstadt to Jonsdorf/Oybin was used. In addition, after 68 years Bertsdorf was again 'Lokeinsatzstelle'. So a unique opportunity.
Also eine einmalige Gelegenheit.
Together with my eldest son we went out early for the MBS Autumn Steam Day. It was a beautiful, sunny day. This year the steam locomotives 7853 'Navizence', 2 'Cockerill', 6 'Magda', 8107 'Kikker', diesel locomotives 259 and 451 and MBS 25, Wismar Railbus KDH T1 drove various rounds between Haaksbergen and Boekelo.

After a week or two of beautiful warm sunshine & a few days in Llanberis a trip to Snowdon Summit was booked. Just our luck when we got to the top it was pouring with rain and covered in low cloud. Not a vew to be seen!! Good excuse to go again......
Western Pacific Railroad EMD F7A diesel electric locomotive # 914A with four other F-units leads a manifest freight train on a main line curve and across a truss bridge in the area of Altamont Pass, California, March 18, 1972. In this scene you can really get to see the (aka covered wagons) while they are still in service and looking good leading this freight train. This photo came from an Internet scan. The photo has been cropped and modified from the original to improve its appearance. The original photographer's name is unknown.

We used to come to the ZLSM regularly for the steam train days. Unfortunately, they were not held for a few years. But in 2023 it was fortunately time again. Their own 1040 ran under steam together with the HSIJ 22 'Tom' and HSIJ 57 'Bonne'. Stichting Crew 2454 with the 2454 and the mP 3029, the SMMR 2225, the SHD 2205 and De Karel set 466 were also present. The SSN came along with the 01 1075 and 23 023 with an extra train from Rotterdam. Many passenger trains ran, but also some freight trains were scheduled for the photographers. A very successful event on a beautiful day.

During the summer holidays, the SGB operated an extended timetable, including the two OMC trains.
As a full-time father and husband I hardly make pictures of regular trains. Almost only when the SSN or VSM has one of their rare main line trips, I am able to catch some regular trains too. So what I catch with my camera of the NS (or other companies) trains is often a side catch of steam or museum material passing by. Fortunately I do find occasionally some time to make pictures.
Thios time, my son and I decided to go to Amsterdam Central Station. The last time I spend a full day at this station photographing trains was in the early '90's. Lots of train types are out of service by now. But I was curious if I could stil;l spend a whole day at this station, enjoying myself. And we did.

Truckee is a rugged high mountain California town known for its cruel winter weather. Daily temps during winter are often the lowest in the lower 48. Truckee is also a hub for railroad traffic through the Sierra Nevada Range. The tracks run immediately adjacent to Old Town Truckee which is fitting, as the station here was one of the original stops along the Transcontinental Railway. And I won't even get started on the Donner Party whose reputed Epicurean adventure took place here.

On September 21, 1991, a farewell tour was organized for the NS 2400 series. Especially for this trip, the 2450 was repainted brown, the 2413 blue, and the 2530 purple. Together with the yellow/grey 2444, I and other participants made the trip in a DE3 (126 and 130). We departed from Geldermalsen, heading towards Boxtel. Here, the four locomotives passed by, after which we continued to Eindhoven. Subsequently, we awaited their arrival in Budel, after which shunting took place and the locomotives, along with the signal box and semaphore signals, could be photographed. The train was photographed again in the dunes. After another photo of the pass through Weert, we continued on to Roosendaal, where the 1501 and the last brown 2200, the 2275, were also present. Naturally, various photos were taken there with the semaphore signals and signal bridge. And finally, the train was awaited at Dordrecht, where I filmed its passage. However, these recordings have disappeared somewhere in the archive.....
Some time ago, I scanned my slides and then tried to make them verifiable. That will possibly be done again in due course....
Chicago Burlington & Quincy (Colorado & Southern) EMC E5A diesel electric locomotive # 9950-A, the Silver Racer which is used as a lead unit on the Texas Zephyr is seen at Dallas Union Station, Texas, ca 1950's. This locomotive was esentially an EMD E6 locomotive that was constructed with a mostly stainless steel car body to go along with the CB&Q stainless steel passenger car fleet. Check out the nice appearing slanted nose on this locomotive. All in all there were 11 E5A locomotives and 5 E5B locomotive built by EMC for the CB&S and its subsidaries.

Before we went to Plandampf 'Dampf trifft Kies III' in the Werrtal valley, my father and I stayed in the Harz for three more days to enjoy some steam at the HSB. The Selketalbahn is in my opinion one of the most beautiful lines where you can easily follow the train and many beautiful pictures can be taken. But the Harzquerbahn and Wernigerode were also visited.

New Haven Railroad DER-4 class FM CPA-24-5 locomotives 797 & 795 are seen in the East yard area fairly near New Haven Union Station in New Haven, Connecticut, early 1950's. These locomotives were the most powerful streamlined cab unit passenger diesel electric locomotives on the New Haven Railroad with 2,400 hp provided for tractive effort purposes. They were also the first passenger diesel locomotives with the B - A-1-A wheel arangement, all prior to the delivery of the EMD FL-9 locomotives with the same wheel arangement.

This FM H16-44 was among the second group of these locomotives purchased by the New Haven Railroad in 1956. Some called these engines Baby Trainmasters because their carbody was very similar although smaller. Originally when first purchased these engines had steam generators so they could be used in passenger service.

Due to Corona and family circumstances, we were unable to join Plandampf in the Werratal. But after so many years, the blood creeps where it can't go. That is why my father, my eldest son and I decided to travel to the former East Germany during the May holidays, to enjoy narrow-gauge steam.
After visiting the Zittau Narrow Gauge Railway for two days, we continued to Dresden. The Lössnitzgrundbahn was the first to be visited there, followed by the Weißeritztalbahn. And finally we visited the Fichtelbergbahn. On teh way up there, we visited the museum station Schlettau. Last time we were here was during Plandampf in and around Aue in 1992.

Western Pacific Railroad EMD F7A diesel electric locomotive # 914A, along with four other units led a manifest freight train around a main line curve in the area of Altamont Pass, California, March 18, 1972. It nice to see this locomotive set (aka covered wagons) while they were still in service. There are numerous high capacity boxcars within this train's consist. Also there is a nice looking railroad steel truss bridge over another track and highway in the background. This photo came from an Internet scan. The photo has been cropped and modified from the original to improve its appearance. The original photographer's name is unknown.
