New Haven Railroad FM CPA-24-5 # 793 & ALCO PA-1 lead a Shore Line passenger train at an unknown location, ca late 1950's. The third car on the train appears to be an ACL REA-Baggage Car, with the fourth car appearing to be a dead-head heavyweight parlor car, that followed by the streamlined train cars with the McGinnis red stripped window band paint scheme

Denver & Rio Grande Western eastbound Rio Grande Zephyr is passing through the yard on the main line with a GP40-2 # 3121, along with other locomotives, leading a manifest freight train on the next track at Grand Junction, Colorado, Summer 1980. There was much freight railroading activity seen as the Zephyr passed through the yard area.

I took this Photograph somewhere in the area of the Restored Depot in Hamlet North Carolina during a Weekend Trip to Hamlet, North Carolina sponsored by the Atlantic Coast Line & Seaboard Air Line Historical Society. We visited the Large CSX Hump Yard, Restored Hamlet Depot and several small Short Line Railroads in the Area such as the Laurinburg & Southern, the Aberdeen, Carolina & Western and the Aberdeen & Rockfish.

The Unknown Pale Blue Locomotive is Number 131.

Unfortunately, I didn't take adequate Notes during this trip, so I cannot identify all of the Cities and Towns, where I took many of my Photographs. We probably traveled within about a 50 Mile Circle around Hamlet, North Carolina.

I know we passed through the outskirts of Rockingham, North Carolina, because, I took a Photograph of the former NASCAR Race Track in Rockingham as we passed with our Vans.

You can find my Photograph of the Hamlet Depot in my Photostream at:

I believe the Depot is in Marks Creek Township in Richmond County?

New Haven Railroad ALCO FA-1 and DL-701 locomotives lead a westbound manifest freight train in the snow on an express track through Stamford, Connecticut, winter 1968. This train appears to be mostly a mixture of TOFC's, refrigerator cars and boxcars. The FA1 locomotive has a good pile of snow on its pilot. Bob Hughes captured this image on film from his warm tower SS38 location. You can easily see the fireman in his front cab window. On the right are the storage tracks for MUTs"

Penn Central Ex PRR EMD GP30 # 2226, Ex NYC GE U30B # 2875 and an Ex New Haven Railroad U25B locomotive is seen leading a westbound manifest freight train on a former New Haven Railroad main line express track past tower SS38 in Stamford, Connecticut, 1971. On the storage track sidings to the right are various set of Pullman Standard lightweight stainless steel MUT's. The busy highway on the left is I-95, that's situated in a residential area of the downtown. At this time it is becoming much more standard to see diesel electric locomotives leading freight trains on this portion of the railroad while under wire. Bob Hughes captured this image from his elevated tower location.

Penn Central ex New Haven Railroad locomotives EMD GP-9 # 7534 & ALCO RS-11 # 7668 & FM H16-44 # 5169 lead a westbound manifest freight train on an express track while passing tower SS38 at Stamford, Connecticut, 1970. Locomotives from three manufactures are shown in this scene with PC numbering on all. The firstbox car coupled to the rear locomotive is from the Maine Central. Highway I-95 can be seen in the background.

Lehigh & New England Railroad ALCO FA-1's & FB-1 in a ABA lash-up led by # 710, along with its manifest freight train, are seen while passing through the New Haven Railroad Yard at Maybrook, New York, ca 1950. You may observe that the engineer's arm is sticking out of his cab window. Seen in the right side background is a rather rare in this area NC&STL Dixie Line boxcar. The L&NE early on completely dieselized in 1949, with ALCO FA-1's, FB-1's and RS-2's locomotives. These locomotives were black and white in color with a red nose logo. This railroad's total operation was shut down 1961 and was abandoned, all due to traffic reductions and further future reductions.

The name of the photographer that captured this image on film is unknown. This photo negative came from my collection.

Atlantic Coast Line EMD diesel locomotives F2A 324 & F2B 324-B are on the middle platform track with the Southland train 132, which is being prepared for departure at the downtown ACL station in St. Petersburg, Florida, April 1956. The train seen in the background on the thrid track is train 38 (aka: The Jax Mail) a local train that handles REX, Baggage and Mail shipments between Saint Petersburg and Jacksonville daily, which will be departing later in the evening after the Southland has departed first. Track one nearest the camera is awaiting the early evening arrival of the southbound ACL West Coast Champion streamliner train 191. Check out the tall fan housings on the F2 diesel locomotives. The EMF F2 locomotive were purchased for secondary train use and pinch hitting on the streamliners when needed and both the A & B-units had steam generators installed. On one particular day during the mid 1950's I observed a F2A locomotive along with 2 FB units lead the streamlined ACL West Coast Champion into the station. You can see a REX truck loading items into a baggage car on the left side of the photo near the walking girl. Of interest is the fact that the upper headlight on the A-units had a gyrating red Mars Light installed. This downtown station lasted in service until 1963, when the new station opened on the Northside of the city.

Penn Central Ex NYC EMD F7A # 1840, Ex PRR EMD # GP9B & Ex NYC EMD F7A # 1758 lead an eastbound string of hopper cars in a manifest freight train through Stamford, Connecticut, summer 1971. It appears that the temperature must be pretty high because the front door to the lead unit is open to provide air circulation for the crew. These locomotives were all strangers on the former New Haven Railroad rails. Bob Hughes was able to take this photo from his tower vantage point.

New Haven Railroad ALCO RS-2 road switcher 0503 is moving a Pullman-Standard lightweight 6 wheel truck stainless steel dining car in the yard at Boston, Massachusetts, 1960. You can see the engineer is his cab window and on the front walkway there appears to be a switchman or another employee. It is nice to see that this ALCO RS-2 is still in its earlier day paint scheme and not in McGinnis Livery.

Budapest, Hungary

On April 23, 2006, I rode a Speeder from Cordele to Plains, Georgia on a trip sponsored by NARCOA (aka North American Rail Car Owners Association). Since I don't own a Motor Car (aka a Speeder) , I rode with a friend who owns two Motor Cars. These are some photos that I took during my trip on the Heart of Georgia Railroad (aka: HOG).

I took This Photograph Near Cordele, Georgia, of a Heart of Georgia Freight Train at a Crossing with two Locomotives and some Freight Cars. I took this Photograph on the Monday after the NARCOA Trips of Saturday & Sunday. The Train consists of two Locomotives, a Lease Unit LLPX 3109 and Heart of Georgia Locomotive Number 1540.

Orange Locomotive Number 3109 is a Leased Unit belonging to Locomotive Leasing Partners. It is a General Motors (aka: GM), Electromotive Division (aka: EMD), GP40 (aka: General Purpose Model 40) Leased from Locomotive Leasing Partners (LLPX Number 3109), while Blue & Yellow Locomotive is Heart of Georgia Locomotive Number 1540, an EMD GP40, which I believe was built in 1966 as Canadian National Number 4007.

The Heart of Georgia is a Short Line railroad created in 1999 to lease and operate 177 miles (285 km) of track owned by the Georgia Department of Transportation between Mahrt, Alabama and Vidalia, Georgia, in the United States . My Photographs cover the section between Plains and Abbeyville. Georgia.

No 27 022 and its train has reached Crianlarich, which retains 'Upper' on the running-in board (the 'Lower' station was on the Caledonian's Stirling-Oban/Ballachulish line). Running in is no 27 016 with the evening train for Fort William, its guard awaiting its arrival in a relaxed fashion.

New Haven Railroad DL-109 diesel locomotive # 0748 along with another lead a stopped eastbound regional passenger train while it is at a station platform in Providence Station, Rhode Island, mid late 1950's. At this platform location fuel and water can be supplied to the locomotives as required and an employee is seen doing so. This station presents interesting views of trains all due to the curved platform tracks. By this time period the DL-109's were not so often used on the regional and first class trains. There appears to be a club combine, a couple of parlor cars and then a diner or grill car on the train ahead of the coaches.

New Haven Railroad GE 44 ton locomotive 0818 is seen spotted on a siding at an unknown location, 3-20-1955. The locomotive is one of the later versions with the radiator grills situated at the hood nose end rather than along the front side of the hood. The location for the photo may be in a small town, because of the nearby home and church building being seen.

During the summer holidays of 2023, my wife and I had to rush to Aberdeen, Scotland, due to family circumstances. During one of the last days there, the Caledonian Railway turned out to be having a special event; the Caledonian Railway Sulzer Diesel Gala. Several diesel locomotive-hauled trains ran between Brechin and Bridge of Dun. I took photographs at various places along the line and of course also went for a ride myself. Still a successful day.

Denver & Rio Grande Western westbound Rio Grande Zephyr, led by EMD F9A locomotive # 5771 and F9B locomotives # 5762 & # 5763, is stopped for fuel, water and possibly for some food supplies at the station in Grand Junction, Colorado, Summer 1980. In this view you can see the whole eight car train including the dome lounge-observation car at the rear end.

Grand Junction is the mid way point location in the trip between Denver and Salt Lake City where the locomotives of westbound or eastbound Zephyr's are fueled and watered. The passenger cars also take on water at this location plus any required food or drink for the diner or lounge car are supplied here too. At this stop some minor required repairs can also be made or a substitute locomotive may be called upon if necessary.

New Haven Railroad DER-1c class ALCO DL109's 0706 and 0710 are seen with a passenger train at a New Haven Union Station platform, New Haven, Connecticut, 1948. The diesel locomotives or steam locomotive deliver westbound trains into the station where electric motors will take over for the remainer of their runs to either Grand Central Terminal or Pennsylvania Station in New York City.

New Haven Railroad FM H16-44 locomotive # 1608 along with an ALCO RS-11 & FM H16-44 are seen while leading a westbound manifest freight train in a snow storm past tower SS38 at Stamford, Connecticut, 1968. The snow is really falling quit hard and the temperature is probably in the twenties, while Bob Hughes took this photo from his warm second floor tower location. To the far left the signs over highway I-95 are hard to read due to the heavy snow fall.

New Haven Railroad GE U25B locomotive # 2516 & another, lead a westbound manifest freight train toward tower SS38 at Stamford, Connecticut, 1968. You can really see the exhaust and radiator heat being generated on top of the locomotives. In this scene you can also plainly see the short blade semaphore signals. The I-95 highway overpass bridge is seen in the background.

Bob Hughes captured this image on film from his tower window.

Denver & Rio Grande Western eastbound Rio Grande Zephyr, led by F9A locomotive 5771 and two F9B's, is seen on a curve while a TOFC freight train with a caboose is being pushed by a SD45 helper in Utah, Summer 1980. Again on this overcast day there was not much available sunshine and it rained on and off as we proceeded eastbound to Denver, our final destination. In this area of the railroad there appear to be three main lines present. In the foreground there is a pipe support bridge that crosses over what appears to be a small river.

Every year the National Steam Train Day is organized during Ascension Day. We can usually be found at the SGB or the RTM. This time, based on photos I had seen in Facebook, I wanted to go to the VSM. Together with my eldest son we went to Loenen, where we almost had a private show of shunting freight wagons. We spent a large part of the morning at the VSM, after which we went to Zwolle in the afternoon to view the 1700 in service there.

As a full-time father and husband I hardly make pictures of regular trains. Almost only when the SSN or VSM has one of their rare main line trips, I am able to catch some regular trains too. So what I catch with my camera of the NS (or other companies) trains is often a side catch of steam or museum material passing by. Fortunately I do find occasionally some time to make pictures. This time we were in the vicinity of Moordrecht for the SSN Steam Train Days. This day the weather was not that great. Cloudy, but at the end of the day luckily the sun appeared. The DMU of Crew 2454 also passed by and I was able to make some pictures of this set also.

I had to hold my breath before each shot so the condensation would dissipate. The local run had paused so the conductor could check the pneumatic lines and so they could pick up a few empty lumber cars from the siding there.

New Haven Railroad DEY-3 class Alco S-1 Switcher 0961 is seen in the yard at Braintree, Massachusetts October 2, 1960. This switcher is still wearing its old paint scheme rather thatn the McGinnis livery. On the left side bottom of the photo there appears to be a stack of new rail.

Every year the MBS organizes an Autumn Stoom Day. This year, the 162 came into action with a recently refurbished boxcar also. There were also some rides with the Wismar railbus. Unfortunately it was raining a lot, although it did add to the atmosphere.

This day was all about freight transport at the RTM. Various steam and diesel locomotives drove freight trams or passenger trams with freight wagons. The weather was excellent and the trams were again magnificent.

'Tracks to the past' is the annual event at the SGB. Various own locomotives and often also guest locomotives are present to liven up this event. This year the 'Blue Angel' of the Dutch railway museum was present. This diesel train set is named after Marlene Dietrich, who was world famous when this train got into service in the Netherlands.

Several trains ran between Goes and Hoedekenskerke. Of course I made a lot photographs along the track, but a ride in the Blue Angel and the steam train could not be left behind. Furthermore, the children had a great time in the playground. It was a nice day out for the whole family.

This railway was built 1891. In some places the roadbed was laid over the terrain. There aren't trenches or embankments. The train travels so slowly that I can take two pictures in almost 30km.
