New Haven Railroad ALCO S-2 diesel electric switcher # 0609 and slug DT-1 are assigned to hump duties at the Hartford Yard, Connecticut, ca mid-late 1950's. This switcher and slug combination started work in 1952 and was used until the early 1960's in Hartford. In the left side background is a State of Maine box car.

New Haven Railroad DER-3a class ALCO PA-1 # diesel electric locomotive # 0778, along with a second PA-1, is seen wearing the McGinnis paint scheme while spotted on a service track in the Cedar Hill Yard, New Haven, Connecticut, Winter early 1960's. These were the last years of passenger train service being provided by these PA-1 locomotives, plus some were being pressed into freight service prior to their retirement in the mid 1960's. The elevated highway seen in the background may be I-95. A small amount of snow remains on the ground and tracks, although a bit dirty by now.

Every year the National Steam Train Day is organized during Ascension Day. We can usually be found at the SGB or the RTM. This time, based on photos I had seen in Facebook, I wanted to go to the VSM. Together with my eldest son we went to Loenen, where we almost had a private show of shunting freight wagons. We spent a large part of the morning at the VSM, after which we went to Zwolle in the afternoon to view the 1700 in service there.

New Haven Railroad ALCO PA-1 # 0760 & another lead an eastbound Boston passenger train in the snow out of Providence, Rhode Island, ca mid 1950's. The PA-1 is wearing the early McGinnis paint scheme, but soon after the first three locomotives were painted in this manner the rest that were painted received the reverse paint scheme. It is much better to be aboard this warm train than to be on the outside battling the elements. You couldn't get in much better than this with the red nose PA-1, the red block signals and the red trailer all seen in the snow. As typical the ALCO's are departing with a good cloud of black smoke trailing.

Due to Corona and family circumstances, we were unable to join Plandampf in the Werratal. But after so many years, the blood creeps where it can't go. That is why my father, my eldest son and I decided to travel to the former East Germany during the May holidays, to enjoy narrow-gauge steam.
First we visited the Zittauer Schmalspurbahn, where due to work on the Mandaubrücke in Zittau itself, only the route from Zittau Vorstadt to Jonsdorf/Oybin was used. In addition, after 68 years Bertsdorf was again 'Lokeinsatzstelle'. So a unique opportunity.
Also eine einmalige Gelegenheit.

During the summer holidays of 2023, my wife and I had to rush to Aberdeen, Scotland, due to family circumstances. During one of the last days there, the Caledonian Railway turned out to be having a special event; the Caledonian Railway Sulzer Diesel Gala. Several diesel locomotive-hauled trains ran between Brechin and Bridge of Dun. I took photographs at various places along the line and of course also went for a ride myself. Still a successful day.
I took this Photograph somewhere in the area of the Restored Depot in Hamlet North Carolina during a Weekend Trip to Hamlet, North Carolina sponsored by the Atlantic Coast Line & Seaboard Air Line Historical Society. We visited the Large CSX Hump Yard, Restored Hamlet Depot and several small Short Line Railroads in the Area such as the Laurinburg & Southern, the Aberdeen, Carolina & Western and the Aberdeen & Rockfish.
The Unknown Pale Blue Locomotive is Number 131.
Unfortunately, I didn't take adequate Notes during this trip, so I cannot identify all of the Cities and Towns, where I took many of my Photographs. We probably traveled within about a 50 Mile Circle around Hamlet, North Carolina.
I know we passed through the outskirts of Rockingham, North Carolina, because, I took a Photograph of the former NASCAR Race Track in Rockingham as we passed with our Vans.

On the storage track sidings to the right are various set of Pullman Standard lightweight stainless steel MUT's. The busy highway on the left is I-95, that's situated in a residential area of the downtown. At this time it is becoming much more standard to see diesel electric locomotives leading freight trains on this portion of the railroad while under wire. Bob Hughes captured this image from his elevated tower location.

Atlantic Coast Line EMD diesel locomotives F2A 324 & F2B 324-B are on the middle platform track with the Southland train 132, which is being prepared for departure at the downtown ACL station in St. Petersburg, Florida, April 1956. The train seen in the background on the thrid track is train 38 (aka: The Jax Mail) a local train that handles REX, Baggage and Mail shipments between Saint Petersburg and Jacksonville daily, which will be departing later in the evening after the Southland has departed first. Track one nearest the camera is awaiting the early evening arrival of the southbound ACL West Coast Champion streamliner train 191. Check out the tall fan housings on the F2 diesel locomotives. The EMF F2 locomotive were purchased for secondary train use and pinch hitting on the streamliners when needed and both the A & B-units had steam generators installed. On one particular day during the mid 1950's I observed a F2A locomotive along with 2 FB units lead the streamlined ACL West Coast Champion into the station. You can see a REX truck loading items into a baggage car on the left side of the photo near the walking girl. Of interest is the fact that the upper headlight on the A-units had a gyrating red Mars Light installed. This downtown station lasted in service until 1963, when the new station opened on the Northside of the city.

Bob Hughes captured this image on film from his warm tower SS38 location. You can easily see the fireman in his front cab window. On the right are the storage tracks for MUTs"
On April 23, 2006, I rode a Speeder from Cordele to Plains, Georgia on a trip sponsored by NARCOA (aka North American Rail Car Owners Association). Since I don't own a Motor Car (aka a Speeder) , I rode with a friend who owns two Motor Cars. These are some photos that I took during my trip on the Heart of Georgia Railroad (aka: HOG).
I took This Photograph Near Cordele, Georgia, of a Heart of Georgia Freight Train at a Crossing with two Locomotives and some Freight Cars. I took this Photograph on the Monday after the NARCOA Trips of Saturday & Sunday. The Train consists of two Locomotives, a Lease Unit LLPX 3109 and Heart of Georgia Locomotive Number 1540.
Orange Locomotive Number 3109 is a Leased Unit belonging to Locomotive Leasing Partners. It is a General Motors (aka: GM), Electromotive Division (aka: EMD), GP40 (aka: General Purpose Model 40) Leased from Locomotive Leasing Partners (LLPX Number 3109), while Blue & Yellow Locomotive is Heart of Georgia Locomotive Number 1540, an EMD GP40, which I believe was built in 1966 as Canadian National Number 4007.
The Heart of Georgia is a Short Line railroad created in 1999 to lease and operate 177 miles (285 km) of track owned by the Georgia Department of Transportation between Mahrt, Alabama and Vidalia, Georgia, in the United States . My Photographs cover the section between Plains and Abbeyville. Georgia.

Lehigh & New England Railroad ALCO FA-1's & FB-1 in a ABA lash-up led by # 710, along with its manifest freight train, are seen while passing through the New Haven Railroad Yard at Maybrook, New York, ca 1950. You may observe that the engineer's arm is sticking out of his cab window. Seen in the right side background is a rather rare in this area NC&STL Dixie Line boxcar. The L&NE early on completely dieselized in 1949, with ALCO FA-1's, FB-1's and RS-2's locomotives. These locomotives were black and white in color with a red nose logo. This railroad's total operation was shut down 1961 and was abandoned, all due to traffic reductions and further future reductions.
The name of the photographer that captured this image on film is unknown. This photo negative came from my collection.

Denver & Rio Grande Western westbound Rio Grande Zephyr, led by EMD F9A locomotive # 5771 and F9B locomotives # 5762 & # 5763, is stopped for fuel, water and possibly for some food supplies at the station in Grand Junction, Colorado, Summer 1980. In this view you can see the whole eight car train including the dome lounge-observation car at the rear end.
Grand Junction is the mid way point location in the trip between Denver and Salt Lake City where the locomotives of westbound or eastbound Zephyr's are fueled and watered. The passenger cars also take on water at this location plus any required food or drink for the diner or lounge car are supplied here too. At this stop some minor required repairs can also be made or a substitute locomotive may be called upon if necessary.
New Haven Railroad ALCO DL-109's are leading an Extra passenger train operating on the main line in the Hyde Park Area south of downtown Boston, Massachusetts, 1945. Denver & Rio Grande Western eastbound Rio Grande Zephyr, led by F9A locomotive 5771 and two F9B's, is seen on a curve while a TOFC freight train with a caboose is being pushed by a SD45 helper in Utah, Summer 1980. Again on this overcast day there was not much available sunshine and it rained on and off as we proceeded eastbound to Denver, our final destination. In this area of the railroad there appear to be three main lines present. In the foreground there is a pipe support bridge that crosses over what appears to be a small river.

Locomotives from three manufactures are shown in this scene with PC numbering on all. The firstbox car coupled to the rear locomotive is from the Maine Central. Highway I-95 can be seen in the background.
New Haven Railroad GE 44 ton locomotive 0818 is seen spotted on a siding at an unknown location, 3-20-1955. The locomotive is one of the later versions with the radiator grills situated at the hood nose end rather than along the front side of the hood. The location for the photo may be in a small town, because of the nearby home and church building being seen.

New Haven Railroad ALCO RS-2 road switcher 0503 is moving a Pullman-Standard lightweight 6 wheel truck stainless steel dining car in the yard at Boston, Massachusetts, 1960. You can see the engineer is his cab window and on the front walkway there appears to be a switchman or another employee. It is nice to see that this ALCO RS-2 is still in its earlier day paint scheme and not in McGinnis Livery.

No 27 022 and its train has reached Crianlarich, which retains 'Upper' on the running-in board (the 'Lower' station was on the Caledonian's Stirling-Oban/Ballachulish line). Running in is no 27 016 with the evening train for Fort William, its guard awaiting its arrival in a relaxed fashion.
