This 11th festival is celebrated within the framework of the recent recognition of the Congo culture as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). The distinction is not only a matter of national pride: it gives a definitive accolade to a culture previously denigrated and marginalized. Thanks to the persistence of its cultists of all the peoples of the coasts of Colon and beyond, it has remained alive and powerful.

Life moves on, whether we act as cowards or heroes. Life has no other discipline to impose, if we would but realize it, than to accept life unquestioningly. Everything we shut our eyes to, everything we run away from, everything we deny, denigrate or despise, serves to defeat us in the end. What seems nasty, painful, evil, can become a source of beauty, joy, and strength, if faced with an open mind. Every moment is a golden one for him who has the vision to recognize it as such.” ~ Henry Miller quotes

In the wake of the Salon scandal, artists from Le Havre, namely Georges Braque, Raoul Dufy and Othon Friesz, sought to be close to the Fauves. The young painters went on excursions - often in pairs - and took advantage of the rapid expansion of the railroad network during the Belle Époque. They were pioneers in the development of tourism in Southern France. The paintings produced during this time bear witness to the close exchange between the artists. For their travels, they sought out destinations that had already been painted by the Impressionists, whether in the Parisian countryside, in Normandy, or in the South of France. Derain, Braque and Friesz repeatedly traveled to L'Estaque, a village near Marseille closely associated with Paul Cézanne (Camoin maintained personal contact with him). In terms of subject matter, the focus was on coastal landscapes and seaside resorts. The artists depicted bourgeois consumer society, drawing on the emerging advertising industry and the culture of tourism and leisure. Because of their rapid painting style and the two-dimensional effect of the pictures, art critics denigrated them as 'affichistes' (poster artists). They dispensed with priming the canvas, used mostly unmixed colors, combined different forms of paint application, or painted directly from the tube.

Thus, whether within or without the campus, the AISA-Ied JNUSU provided a model leadership for struggles for.

democracy and against corporatisation and commercialisation..

The SFI-AISF have declared that the JNUSU President elected from AISA was 'non-functional' and has lost the.

moral right to lead the Union. We ask them -how functional were the other Office Bearers from their own.

organisations? Didn't the JNUSU VP break all records of audacity and irresponsibility by quietly vanishing to take.

up a job in Silchar (Assam) last semester? Didn't the SFI do its best to hush up this fact, claiming she wassick? When AISA exposed the truth, wasn't the SFI itself forced to admit that Ms. Ena Panda had beenirresponsible and taken up a job? And wasn't she forced to return because according to the 'residential.

clause' in the JNU rules, she could not have held a job outside Delhi during the first two years of her PhD?Since then, how active has the VP been? Her name has appeared on leaflets, but even during the hungerstrike at the Ad Block, she could be seen taking classes in SLL&CS but never bothered to visit the hungerrole was condemned! How come SFI-AISF never questioned the right of the JNUSU VP to continue in .

strikers even once. In fact, she was absent even during the last Council Meeting, where the JNUSU President's.

Office? .

.

As for the General Secretary, the less said the better. He is better known for his love for badminton rather thanfor his commitment to students' struggles! He has surpassed himself by playing a leisurely game of badmintonwhile the JNUSU holds mess campaigns on some serious issue! The present GS, elected from SFI-AISF hasrendered even the post of General Secretary insignificant and invisible. In stark contrast, the campus recallsthat it was the post of General Secretary which was the centre of attention last year, when the AISA represen-tative Comrade Mona Das who held the post. Last year, the General Secretary elected from AISA was.

the centre of SFI-AISF's slander; this year, things have not changed even when she is now Presi-.

As for the issue of resisting the Administration, the SFI-Ied Union of 2003 has the unparalleled record of.

forcing students to sign 'apology letters' for protesting against rotten food in the privatised mess.

of Mahi Mandavi. As for fighting communalism and the ABVP, the campus has not forgotten the historic.

legal 'compromise deed'-signed by SFI leaders with the ABVP in 2002, regarding the violenceperpetrated by ABVP during Ashok Singhal's visit to the campus..

The SFI-AISF's JNUSU leadership was not only inactive and irresponsible, it also went to great lengths to be.

sectarian. For fea1that achievements on the Charter of Demands would go to the credit of the JNUSU President.

from AISA, the SFI-AISF used its majority within the Council to veto the proposal for a struggle on the Charter,·claiming that 15 September was 'too late' for an agitation..

SFI-AISF's definition of 'too late' is flexible -and changes depending on whether they are in the.

driving seat of the JNUSU or not! For instance.

in 2002, when the JNUSU was led by SFI-AISF, didn't the hunger strike on the Charter of Demands start on 11September extend well into the third week of September?.

The SFI-AISF-led JNUSU of 2002-03 failed to organise any protest actioo.or agitation whatsoever..

.

.

Again last year, the agitation was conducted between 12th to 16th of September..

How come 11-12 September wasn't 'too late' for hunger strikes and struggles in an SFI-AISF-.

.

ledJNUSU -but 15 September is 'too late' this year, when the JNUSU President is from AISA?I.

Remember that even to get the JNUSU to arrive at a decision for a Protest Demo on the 15th,.

theJNUSU President had to spend a week persuading the defunct General Secretary to do his.

consti tutional duty and convene a Council Meeting, which was finally held on 11 September..

Friends, the fact that the JNUSU President was from AI SA made her the centre of avirulent attack from the SFI-AISF throughout the year. But f.

the reason for this attack is not just acampus matter or amatter of sectarian rivalry alone..

The CPI(M) and the SFI, although they call themselves 'Left', actuaUy stand for turning the red flag into ared carpet for MNCs; l.

I.

for turning industrial and agricultural land Into malls and multiplexes; for using the left banner to 'discipline' and suppress the 't workers' movement; for defending the draconian killer law AFSPA; for brutal police repression against students' movement as.

seen recently In Jadavpur University. The A/SA-led JNUSU, with with its genuine Leflagenda, with its solidarity for the peoples'movements from Manipur to Gurgaon, for students' struggles for democracy from Jadavpur to Jamia, and its historic blow to the.

corporate Nestle Outlet, gave the JNUSU a unique character and content. While addressing and expanding a range of campus.

facilities, the AISA-led JNUSU's anti-corporate and pro-democratic initiatives made JNU students proud, thus posing aquestionmark to the anti-people, anti-student politics and pro-Congress policies of CPI{M) and SFI. Small wonder, then, that the SFI-AISF is so desperate to denigrate the present leadership of JNUSUI We appeal to students to expose and rebuff such politics of CPI(M).

and SFI both in the country and the campus, and rally with AI SA for agenuine Left agenda of struggle..

Nature's cycle operates even inside a greenhouse, and it's taken Albuquerque Biopark's lilies on a wonderful ride for we photographers. But there are only a few left and this one was the freshest of those. It won't be long before they're gone for the season.

I must say that my appreciation of flower photography has grown over the months. Not long ago I was denigrating the genre to my friends as "too easy" and offering limited scope for expression. But I find now that at the very least one can have a lot of fun with these pics; at best: they are as good a receptacle for creative juices as anything.

A funny little trend that emerged from the many friendly conversations we had with shopkeepers, inkeepers, museum curators, etc., is how much each of them liked to talk trash about other tourist attractions in the area. One I heard denigrated more than almost any other was the Arlington Inn, which looked perfectly beautiful from the road but I was assured was vastly inferior to the West Mountain Inn, and indeed, most lodging in the area. Not exactly sure why; never got a great answer to that question.

Hindu Nationalists decry and denigrate the Indian national flag.

Modi Sir, as a senior and prominent whole-timer of the RSS you must know that on the eve of Independence the above.

mentioned RSS organ used the following language against the Tri-colour, the new National Flag of India:.

The people who have come to power by the kick of fate may give in our hands the Tricolour but it never [sic] be respected.

and owned by Hindus. The word three is in itself an evil, and a flag having three colours will certainly produce a very bad.

psychological effect and is injurious to a country.[3].

Hindu nationalists ran coalition governments with the Muslim League in 1942-43.

1942 was a critical year in the history of India's Freedom Struggle. In a nation-wide call the British rulers were asked to.

`Quit India'. The rulers responded by turning the country into a hell: armed squads killed common Indians completely.

disregarding the rule of law, millions were arrested and thousands suffered unparalleled repression. The Congress.

governments which were ruling different Provinces of British India were dismissed. The only political organizations.

allowed to work were the Hindu Mahasabha and the Muslim League. These two organizations united to serve the rulers.

and formed coalition governments. It was corroborated by the mentor of RSS. `Veer' Savarkar in his presidential address.

to the 24th session of the Hindu Mahasabha at Kanpur in 1942 declared,.

In practical politics also the Mahasabha knows that we must advance through reasonable compromises. Witness the fact.

that only recently in Sind, the Sind-Hindu-Sabha on invitation had taken the responsibility of joining hands with the League.

itself in running coalition Government. The case of Bengal is well known. Wild Leaguers whom even the Congress with all.

its submissiveness could not placate grew quite reasonably compromising and socialable as soon as they came in contact.

with the HM and the Coalition Government, under the premiership of Mr. Fazlul Huq and the able lead of our esteemed.

Mahasabha leader Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerji, functioned successfully for a year or so to the benefit of both the.

communities.[4].

When Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose was trying to liberate India, the Hindu nationalists were helping to strengthen the.

British rule and its armed forces.

Sir, you must be familiar with the name of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, who tried to liberate India militarily with the help.

of Germany and Japan. However, during this period `Hindu Nationalists', instead of helping him, were hand in glove with.

the British masters in defeating Netaji's liberation struggle (in which former succeeded). Hindu Mahasabha under `Veer'.

Savarkar's leadership organized recruitment camps for British armed forces. The Hindutva camp's surrender to the.

colonial masters was total, as we see in the following utterances of `Veer' Savarkar:.

So far as India's defence is concerned, Hindudom must ally unhesitatingly, in a spirit of responsive co-operation with the.

war effort of the Indian government in so far as it is consistent with the Hindu interests, by joining the Army, Navy and the.

Aerial forces in as large a number as possible and by securing an entry into all ordnance, ammunition and war craft.

factories...Again it must be noted that Japan's entry into the war has exposed us directly and immediately to the attack by.

Britain's enemies. Consequently, whether we like it or not, we shall have to defend our own hearth and home against the.

ravages of the war and this can only be done by intensifying the government's war effort to defend India. Hindu.

Mahasabhaites must, therefore, rouse Hindus especially in the provinces of Bengal and Assam as effectively as possible to.

enter the military forces of all arms without losing a single minute.[5].

.

What RSS instills in cadres?.

Sir, in your interview you claimed that RSS instills in cadres the spirit of patriotism, working for the good of the nation and.

discipline. Since RSS stands for Hindu Rashtra or nation, one can understand the fate of democratic-secular India in the.

hands of RSS cadres. You should have shared what the most prominent ideologue of the RSS, Golwalkar, expected from.

RSS members. While addressing a gathering of top ranking RSS on March 16, 1954, at Sindi, Wardha, he said:.

If we say that we are part of the organization and accept its discipline then selectiveness has no place in life. Do what is.

told. If told to play kabaddi, play kabaddi; told to hold meeting then meeting....For instance some of our friends were told.

to go and work for politics that does not mean that they have great interest or inspiration for it. They don't die for politics.

like fish without water. If they are told to withdraw from politics then also there is no objection. Their discretion is just not.

required.[6].

This second statement of 'Guru' Golwalkar is also significant..

We know this also that some of our Swayamsevaks work in politics. There they have to organize according to the needs of.

work public meetings, processions etc., have to raise slogans. All these things have no place in our work. However, like the.

character in a play whatever role has been assigned should be portrayed with best of capability. But sometimes.

Swayamsevaks go beyond the role assigned to a performer (nat) as they develop over-zealousness in their hearts, to the.

extent that they become useless for this work. This is not good.[7].

Modi Sir, we find here 'Guru' Golwalkar referring to the Swayamsevaks loaned to the political satellite as `nat', performers,.

who are meant to dance to the tune of the RSS. It should be noted here that Golwalkar's above design of controlling the.

STUDENTS' FEDERATION OF INDIA .

ALL INDIA STUDENTS' FEDERATION .

.

30.10.04 ON THE JNU STUDENT MOVEMENT AND THE ROLE OF THE ABVP1 Friends, The ABVP in its pamphlet yesterday, has once again taken the Intelligence of the student community for granted. For days now, the ABVP has been engaged in a hate campaign of lies and half·lruti1s. Yesterday's pamphlet carries on in lhe same vein. .

This campus is witness to a long history of struggles, under the banner of the SF I-AISF led JNUSU In a penod marked by the withdrawal of the state from education, which is part of !he neoliberal dogma that both the BJP and the Congress celebrates as its economic philosophy, universities across the country are faced with severe fund crunch. The UGC has been abdicating its responsibility of developing the academic infrastructure of the universities, be it in terms of oonslruction of new hostels or prcvidin g adequate funds for the university libraries. It was in this backdrop that the SFI-AISF raised the slogan of "More Hostels, More Books" and SFI~ISF led JNUSUs since 1997 to 2003 (with the sole exception of 2000 when ABVP had won the President's post by one vole) have waged relentless sb"uggles and succeeded in forcing the JNU Administration and the Cenb"al government to allot more funds to address 1he problems faced by JNU students. Can the ABVP deny the fact that six new hostels have been constructed in JNU and existing hostels also expanded, during the period 1997 to 2004, when the SFI· AJSF has Jed the studenb' union except for the year 2000·01? It is the result of this achievement that with the allotment of Lohit· Chandrabhaga, no outstation student of the University would be without hostel accomodation from this year Of this struggle for more hostels or this achievement ABVP can claim no part .

In factin 1999, when students were sitting on ah indeffnite hungerstrike demanding hostels, ABVP was took out a protest march and burnt the efflgyofthe JNUSU! When the JNU Administration cracked down upon the agffation and 63 students were arrested, 14 ofthem senttojail, ABVP sided with the Administration, supported the sine die closure of the university and provided ists of Left activists to the Po5ce. It was the massive soidarity expressed by the entire university commumty that ensured that the sine die was withdrawn, the arrested students released and the ploy of the ABVP and the BJP-Ied government to destroy the democratic student movement ofJNU was foiled. Can the ABVP answer why out of the 63 students who were Bffested during the decisive agitation on hostels in 1999 (even the Delhi High Court had upheld the demand ofthe agitation and asked the JNU Administration to construct more hostels) none were from the ABVP? It is but natural that the ABVP would seek to conceal its shameful history in this campus by trying to denigrate student movements and struggles on genuine issues, because the only movem ents they befieve and participate in are the likes of RSS-VHP-BJP led ram mandir movement and an6-reservabon agitations. .

The achievement of the outgoing SFI-AISF led JNUSU in reinstating the elected students' representatives to the Academic Council, the highest decision making body of the University, has to be seen in the context when across the country democrauc nghts are being curbed elected students' unions are being banned. When the students are being systematically denied representation in dectsion making bodies of universities, and anti-student measures like fee-hikes and fe~lowship cuts are being imposed undemocratically, the greater democratisation of the Academic Council by including elected student representative, which has been agreed to in principle by the JNU Administration following the recent agitation is a big advance made by the JNU studentmovemenl We would requestthe ABVP, which has said that no commitment in this regard was made, to go through the agreement signed by the VC (widely publicised by the JNUSU), which clearly mentions that a 3-member Committee would be formed to suggest the modalities of elected students' representation, which has already been agreed upon in principle. While the students have got used to their non-participation in any genuine struggle, it ts at least expected that they make sense of agreements signed between the JNUSU and the Administration. .

When the students of JNU were fighting for the formation of the GSCASH, an insutution that marks a historic achievement in our struggle for genderjustice, the ABVP was engaged in a vibiolic anti-GSCASH campaign, terming it to be an instrument of 'male victimisaoon' and trying to invoke patriarchal sentiments to sabotage its formation. While the SFI-AISF has been engaged in a struggle to strengthen the body, the ABVP has been setting the record for a most consistent defence of sexual offenders, by bringing out protest marches in defence of a faculty member who had harassed a foreign student (and indicted by the GSCASH for being guilty of sexual misdemeanours) or defending habitual offender Bhaskar Yadav. Defending criminality of all varieties has, however, been the USP for the ABVP since long. In th is semester ABVP's contribution to JNU has been its repeated attacks on the freedom of expression, whether it was the disruption of the film show on the 14th August or the public meeting on the 17th August .

ABVP has sought to justify their 17th August Jumpenism by saying that Mr.Geelani is a "suspected terrorist" even when he has been acquitted by the Court and charges against him have been dismissed. They are trying to obfuscate the fact that itwas the ABVP, which was on the wrong side of the law on that night, when it tried to physically prevent a free citizen to air his views in public. The SFI-AISF does not endorse the views of Mr.Geelani regarding Kashmir, neither was Mr.Geelani called to speak from our platform. Our views on Kashmir match those of the Left Parties, that the solution to the problem of Kashmir neither lies in secession nor continued state repression, but by granting genuine autonomy to Kashmir and making peace with Pakistan. Article 370 ofthalndian Constitution needs to be strengthened in this regard and not abrogated as demanded by the BJP or deliberately subverted, as has been done by successive Congress governments at the Centre. Moreover, the SFI-AlSF stands completely opposed to the RSS-ABVP's advocacy of the trifurcatJon of Jammu and Kashmir on communal lines which is completely opposed to the letter and spirit of the Indian Constitution. The ABVP should introspect whether their opposition to Mr.Geelani's presence in JNU arose out of any genuine concern toward the Kashmir problem, or because of the fact that he is a Muslim from Kashmir who cannot but be a 11terrorist" according to their communal outlook. The reason that a section of the population of Kashmir share pro-secessionist views is because of decades .. long denll of their legitimate cultural and material aspirations. If we are truly committed to safeguarding the territorial integrity of India, we have to first recognise this fact and be committed in making conscious efforts to heal the wounds inflicted upon the Kashmiris both by extremist violence and state repression. As university students, the least that we can do Is to listen and engage with different shades of Kashmirl opinion and not brand innocent people as 11terrorists" and "anti-nationals". .

addition, evidence shows that the U.S-British forces use banned weapons such as napalm and weapons of mass destruction (WMD), which contaminated and polluted Iraq's environment, and caused health hazards. .

Doctors in Iraq have reported a significant increase in deformities among newborn babies that could be due to radiation passed through mothers following U.S. wars of 1991-2003. 'After studying family history of couples with deformed babies, they concluded that radiation and pollution [caused by 'depleted' uranium dust, DU] were the main causes of the deformity', Dr Lamia'a Amran, a paediatrician at the Iraqi Red Crescent Society (IRCS) hospital in Baghdad, told IRIN News. "Since 1991 the number of children born with birth deformities has quadrupled", said Dr Janan Hassan, who runs a children clinic in Basra in southern Iraq. If DU is the cause of the cancers, which is most likely, the crisis could become infinitely worse for women and children in Iraq. .

"The depleted uranium left by the U.S. bombing campaign has turned Iraq into a cancer-infested country. For hundreds of years to come, the effects of the uranium will continue to wreak havoc on Iraq and its surrounding areas", said Iraqi artist and author of 'Baghdad Diaries', Nuha Al-Radi before she died of leukaemia on August 13, 2004. .

The U.S-Britain used thousands of tonnes of DU in their wars on Iraq and over a wide range of areas. It took three to five years for the cancers to begin manifesting after the first Gulf crisis. Iraqi women and their newborn babies expecting bleak future as a result of the U.S-Britain use of WMD. .

The pretexts for the war were proved to be just lies. Iraq had no WMD and Iraq had no relations with terrorism. The war on Iraq was an illegal act of aggression, designed to increase the threat of terrorism and violence, in order to exert control. The continuing Occupation of Iraq is to rob Iraq of its oil resources, and enhance U.S. imperialist doctrine. .

So, as news of the appalling miseries of Iraqi women has piled up, where are Western feminists? Aren't women rights a universal demand? Are Western feminists allowing George Bush to steal their rhetoric to occupy Iraq and torture Iraqi women? Where is this international women solidarity? The setting up of an international war crimes tribunal to investigate and prosecute those who committed these crimes against the Iraqi people should be the aim of the world community. It will enhance human rights and democracy worldwide. .

George Bush "colonial feminism" and his use of women status in the Middle East is merely to denigrate Islam and Islamic culture, and serving U.S. imperial doctrine. The best way to redress U.S. crimes against Iraqi women and end the suffering is the immediate and full withdrawal of U.S. forces from Iraq. This will allow Iraq to progress toward full sovereignty and national independence. .

The Occupation has had both immediate and long-term negative implications for the safety of Iraqi women and for their participation in post-war life in Iraq. The end of the Occupation will stop the chain reactions of violence, and may allow the victim's wounds to heal. .

OK

So at the risk of sounding curmugeonly, and I don't mean to denigrate Edith Cavell and her very noble deeds, but as I read this I wonder where is the Canadian content? Edith Cavell was British and there is no mention that she helped Canadian soldiers.

Why not have named the mountain after a Canadian - I am quite sure that if we looked in our history of World War I there are some who did noble deeds and sacrifices to help the Allied cause. Sir Arthur Currie comes to mind (I am sure there are many others)

The Fundacion Portobelo and the Grupo Realce Historico announce that on Saturday, April 27 they will hold the 11th PORTOBELO CONGOS AND DIABLOS FESTIVAL. This is the main event for Panamanian Afro-colonial culture. Without a doubt it’s a major cultural and tourist attraction for locals and foreigners, who fill the streets of the historic town to enjoy the autochthonous manifestations of this area of the province of Colon.

This important folkloric meeting has been confirmed the support of of the Tourism Authority of Panama and the National Institute of Culture, institutions that are once again joining this cultural effort. The festival arose from the concern of local residents to maintain their traditions, and brings indisputable cultural, economic, tourism and image gains for the community of Portobelo, Colon province and the country in general.
