The Fundacion Portobelo and the Grupo Realce Historico announce that on Saturday, April 27 they will hold the 11th PORTOBELO CONGOS AND DIABLOS FESTIVAL. This is the main event for Panamanian Afro-colonial culture. This 11th festival is celebrated within the framework of the recent recognition of the Congo culture as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). The distinction is not only a matter of national pride: it gives a definitive accolade to a culture previously denigrated and marginalized. Thanks to the persistence of its cultists of all the peoples of the coasts of Colon and beyond, it has remained alive and powerful.

Works of art, painted black

Magniloquent, bleeding dark

Monotonous palate, murky spectrum, grimly unlimited

Food for thought, so prolific

In contrasting shades, forcely fed

Abstraction, so choking, so provocative

A canvas to paint, to degenerate

Dark reflections - degeneration

A canvas to paint, to denigrate

Dark reflections, of dark foul light

Profound, aesthetic beauty

Or shaded, sensary corruption

Perceptions, shattered, splintered, mirroring

In deft taints, diluted, tinted

Spelt out, in impaired colour

Denigrating, going to paints to pain - not a pretty picture

Friends, Faced with repeated political setbacks, the ABVP now seems to have pinned its hopes on lies and intimidation. While intimidation was Quite abundantly on display on the night of 1Qth August. the lies that the ABVP is now putting forth (see for example its pamphlets dated 20th, 22"d & 24'h September 2002) would put even gobbles to shame. The most blatant of these lies of course are the concocted statements that the ABVP has been trying to repeatedly attribute to two members of the GSCASH. Hundreds of students are witness to the fact that one of .

them, Ayesha Kidwai, was not even present in the meeting in question while the other Madhu Sahni, was not among the speakers. This extremely deplorable attack shows not only the ABVP's ideological animosity to democratic institutions like the GSCASH which JNU students' have built up through their struggles but also its discomfort at seeing students and teachers of JNU forging on unity against attempts to .

saffronise and privatise our university. It is this unity which helped the JNUSU-Ied agitation achieve a breakthrough on the issue of the X Plan Proposals. . The ABVp has never been sure about ,what mark to ~ut befor~ the student ~ommuni~ on the issue of saffronisation, a project crone .

to 1ts heart. Somet1mes 1t has drafted syllabi for Human Consciousness -'psychedelic Consciousness', 'metaphorical brain' etc. etc. At yet other times it has even beaten up fellow-students in order to disrupt the struggle against saffronisation. Now it claims that "the leftists are trying to dupe the student community in the name of the AC". The fact is that the agreement reached on this issue between the Administration and JNUSU reads, .

"Abo~t the Tenth ~lan the ~niversity has already constituted a new ~ommittee of De~ns for the XPlan . The University has also const1tuted 3 spec1al committees to prepare the deta1led proposals 1n respect of vanous schools and other sections of the University. .

The first meeting of the Dean's Committee was held today, 20.9.2002. In this meeting it was agreed that if any School would like to propose a new Centre to be created during X Plan period , including in areas mentioned in the X Plan document already with the UGC, a detailed exercise in this regard must be carried out by the proposing School. A separate document containing the argument for creating such a Centre, its academic activities (teaching requirements and infrastructural requirements) should be prepared . Basic responsibility of presenting this proposal to the UGC team will be on the Dean of the proposing School. An interdisciplinary proposal from a group of faculty members from two or more Schools may be prepared in the same way, identifying the nodal person for presentation of such a proposal. Any proposal for new Centres will first be considered in the concerned School followed by Deans' Sub-Committees and finally the Deans' Committee for the X Plan. The final implementation of all academic programmes arising out of Tenth Plan will be implemented only after their due approval through the Academic Council of the University. .

.

This amounts to a de facto review of the X Plan since now proposals in the original document as well as new proposals will have to be supported by academic argument ('psychedelic consciousness' won't do} and will have to face the democratic scrutiny of the academic community of some school before being placed before the Deans' Committee and then the Academic Council. While the struggle against privatisation and saffronisation is not certainly won, this is a big step forward since it allows the democratic sections of the academic community to make their rejection of the saffron proposals effective prior to the plan being placed before the UGC team. This is a far cry from the Administration's initial position of placing all proposals -even those like 'Human Consciousness' which did not have the support of any school or centre -before the UGC team and getting them ratified by the AC altar the UGC had passed them. .

The ABVP claims "there will be no regular mess for Mahi-Mandavi", not choosing to tell us that the reason that there is no regular mess for M&hi-Mandavi is that the UGC, under the guidanct:: of M.M. Joshi, has banned the recruitment of non-teaching staffs in universities. The SFI-AISF has been struggling against these policies and it shall continue its struggle to ensure that the demand to; mess staff fo; Mahi-Mandavi is included in the X Plan during its reform ation. Until the time that regular staff is appointed, cooperation are likely to be more accountable and transparent than private contractors and SFI-AISF shall make all efforts to ensure that the administration fulfills its commitment of facilitating the setting up of such cooperatives. .

The SFI-AISF-Ied JNUSU had formulated a Perspective Plan document for the library in 2000 and on the basis of it there have been repeated struggles for better library and computer-internet facilities. The ABVP has not been part of any of these struggles, not even in 2001 when it held the President and Joint Secretary's posts in the JNUSU. While the Joint Secretary had completely disappeared, the President was too busy shielding his lumpen ABVP colleagues to participate in any of ,he agitational programmes on these issues for which representativesfrom SFI-AISF had taken the initiative. It was on the initiative of SFI-AISF representatives that drives were launched to collect requisition from students from procuring books in the library. Now that internet facilities have been upgraded at the central and school levels and the administration has agreed to student participation in the procurement process in the library, the ABVP has again led through its teach -"internet facilities will not be available to the students". .

The BJP a.k.a Bhartiya Janta Petrol-Pump Party at the Centre and the Congress at the state have brought the transport system in Delhi to its knees through their bungling over the CNG conversion issue. The DTC has come up with a proposal to discontinue student bus passes. SFI-AISF on campus, as well as at the state level have protested against these policies and as a result of the JNUSU's efforts a computerized bus pass counter has been started in JNU and the services of bus no. 666 regularised . The university bus is to be converted to CNG. In JNU the ABVP lies-"no bus for down campus"-while in DU the ABVP, as well as the NSUI, look on silently while the number of U-Specials drops to one-fifth of its initial value. .

The ABVP's litany of lies knows no bounds. "No time-bound construction of new hostels", despite the fact that after the latest agitation the Administration has committed that one wing of the Tribal Hostel will be completed by December 2002 and construction of both new hostels will be completed by 2003. "No assurance on Post-Matric Scholarship", despite the fact that the university is already in touch with different State governments to make these scholarships available. The upgradation of the Health Centre, including the protision of more specialists and pathological investigation, the commitment on raising the thesis and field-trip grants as the fact that a university-level placement cell has already started functioning have been conveniently suppressed by the ABVP. .

In its attempt to denigrate the students movement the ABVP has found an ally in the NSUI. First the NSUI claimed that no UGBM had been held prior to the agitation. This lie being exposed, the NSUI now asks why there was a hunger strike now if the UGBM was held in February. Not being serious about the fight against communalism, the NSUI has forgotten about the massive mobilisation on campus in favour .

of peace and communal harmony in February-March. And not caring about students' struggles 1t does not know about the numerous demonstrations and the 4-day long strike against the XPlan during March and April. .

As long as an RSS-backed government is in power at the Centre, our university shall continue to face the threats of privatisation and saffronisation. The recently concluded JNUSU-Ied agitation was a demonstration of the effectiveness of united student resistance in countering these policies and SFI-AISF reaffirms its commitment to consistently struggle against these policies. We appeal to the progressive, secular and democratic-minded sections of the student community to consolidate their unity for the struggles ahead and give a fitting rebuff to the RSS· ABVP. .

STUDENTS' UNITY LONG LIVE! .

Ambedkar's anti-feudal vision led him to propose nationalization of land. Ambedkar had actively backed the Mumbai textile workers' strike in protest against the British Government's draconian Bill against workers' strikes, asserting that the right to strike was "simply another name for the right to freedom." Ambedkar held that the State's role is to protect workers' .

rights, not privileges of private capital, "Anyone who studies the working of the system of social economy based on private enterprise and pursuit ofpersonal gain will realize how it undermines, ifit does not actually violate, the last two premises on which democracy rests... Gov. DeSantis Announces Investigation into Any Potential COVID-19 Vaccine Wrongdoings

DeSantis: What Happened at Twitter 'Is Not Even Close' to the Totality of the Censorship Around C19

"Your policies or your positions or your analysis of this medical science should stand on its own. And if it's not able to accept criticism, if you can't defend the policy against valid criticism, then maybe you need to be looking in the mirror," expressed Governor DeSantis.

"But that's not what these elites wanted to do. They wanted to just cocoon themselves from any criticism and to try to denigrate anybody that had a different way of thinking."

"Today I'm announcing a petition with the Supreme Court of Florida to impanel a statewide grand jury to investigate any and all wrongdoing...with respect to COVID-19 vaccines," he says.

"In Florida, it is illegal to mislead and misrepresent, especially when you are talking about the efficacy of a drug."

“That will come with legal processes that will be able to get more information and to bring legal accountability to those who committed misconduct.”

Max Beckmann was one of the Weimar Republic’s most honored artists and one of those most vilified by the Nazis. This self-portrait was perhaps the last painting the artist completed in Berlin before he and his wife fled to the Netherlands on July 20, 1937. Their flight occurred just two days after Adolf Hitler delivered a speech condemning modern art and one day after the opening of the exhibition Degenerate Art, the Nazis’ official denigration of the avant-garde, which included twenty-two of Beckmann’s works. The artist departed Germany just in time: in 1937 more than five hundred of his works were confiscated from public collections.

The most brilliantly colored and aggressive of all of Beckmann’s self-portraits (he painted over eighty), this powerful work depicts the artist, near life size, on the staircase of a hotel lobby, separated from two figures in the background on the right. Beckmann steps to the left, while his dark-rimmed gaze and the entire picture plane - curtains, flowers, staircase, and banisters - seem to slide off to the right. His large hands hang down, limp, against his black tuxedo.

The Fundacion Portobelo and the Grupo Realce Historico announce that on Saturday, April 27 they will hold the 11th PORTOBELO CONGOS AND DIABLOS FESTIVAL. This is the main event for Panamanian Afro-colonial culture. Without a doubt it’s a major cultural and tourist attraction for locals and foreigners, who fill the streets of the historic town to enjoy the autochthonous manifestations of this area of the province of Colon.

This important folkloric meeting has been confirmed the support of of the Tourism Authority of Panama and the National Institute of Culture, institutions that are once again joining this cultural effort. The festival arose from the concern of local residents to maintain their traditions, and brings indisputable cultural, economic, tourism and image gains for the community of Portobelo, Colon province and the country in general.

Myitkyina, Kachin State

Myanmar’s military state uses Union Day celebrations to display its ethnic diversity, requiring groups to perform dances in ‘traditional’ dress. At the same time, because of negative stereotypes of non-Burmans, the government also enforces a unified identity based on the Burman Buddhist majority culture.

Minoritised communities in part resist this homogenisation and denigration on these occasions by displaying clothing that reflects new ideas of modernity and tradition. The Jinghpaw are the majority and culturally dominant Kachin group, and their dress has come to stand for all Kachin peoples at official events.*

Burma to Myanmar

(November 2023 – February 2024)

From influential superpower to repressive regime, Myanmar – also known as Burma – has seen dramatic fluctuations in fortune over the past 1,500 years.

Experiencing decades of civil war and now ruled again by a military dictatorship, Myanmar is an isolated figure on the world stage today, and its story is relatively little known in the West. However, the extraordinary artistic output of its peoples, over more than a millennium of cultural and political change, attests to its pivotal role at the crossroads of Asia.

Picking up the thread around AD 450, the exhibition explored how Myanmar's various peoples interacted with each other and the world around them, leading to new ideas and art forms. From the 14th century several kingdoms jostled for power and expanded important links with Thailand, China, Sri Lanka, and traders from the Middle East and Europe, creating a fertile ground for diverse cultures to flourish; a coin issued by King Dhammaraja Hussain (r. 1612–22) of the Arakan kingdom, inscribed in Arakanese, Bengali and Persian, shows the wide reach of his trade and political networks.

Rulers in central Myanmar came to dominate parts of the region between the 16th and 19th centuries, becoming the largest empire in mainland Southeast Asia. A stunning gold and ruby-studded letter sent by King Alaungpaya to George II in 1756 speaks to the empire's wealth and power.

Annexation by the British in the 19th century saw tremendous changes impacting art, culture and society – and contributed to the turmoil faced by Myanmar today. The show concluded by exploring how modern-day artists have defied state censors, marrying activism with artistic traditions in expressions of resistance and hope.
