C’era una volta una volpe molto furba e altrettanto famelica; la sua fama era tale che tutti gli animali erano fuggiti dal bosco in cui abitava, per paura di finire divorati. Alla fine, la volpe si era trovata senza più nulla da mettere sotto i denti. L’animale, spinto dalla fame, aveva abbandonato il bosco e fu così che si ritrovò in un vigneto.

Dai tralci di vite penzolavano dei grossi grappoli d’uva: gli acini erano dolci e succosi e avevano un aspetto delizioso. Morale: Spesso, le persone denigrano ciò che non riescono ad avere.

 

The Fox and the Grape.

Once upon a time there was a very clever and equally ravenous fox; his fame was such that all the animals had fled from the forest in which he lived, for fear of being devoured. In the end, the fox found itself with nothing more to eat. The animal, driven by hunger, had left the woods and so it was that he found himself in a vineyard.

Large bunches of grapes hung from the vine shoots: the berries were sweet and juicy and had a delicious appearance. So, the fox got up on his hind legs to grab some grapes; however, it was not tall enough and could not even touch the grapes. After a few attempts, the fox took a run and tried to reach the grapes by jumping: this time too, however, he failed.

Since a crowd of curious animals was gathering all around her, the fox, in order not to make a bad impression, left with a swollen chest, exclaiming aloud: "These grapes are still unripe".

 

Moral: Often, people denigrate what they can't have.

Photographing a field full of blossoms, like poppies, rape ore sunflowers, actually is something very philosophical. Find, what is different, that’s the motto, for instance different in size, position, colour ore posture. But it’s not the goal to denigrate, to condemn, to ridicule ore to deny this differentness. In fact it’s the aim to emphasize the extraordinary in it, to really see it and to appreciated that. If this is so natural in our approach with the miracles of nature it must be possible to treat each other the same way.

 

Fotografieren von Feldern voller Blüten, wie bei Mohn, Raps oder Sonnenblumen, ist eigentlich etwas sehr philosophisches. Finde das, was anders ist, ist hier die Devise, zum Beispiel anders in der Größe, der Lage, der Farbe oder der Haltung. Doch geht es hier nicht darum das Andersartige zu verunglimpfen, zu verdammen, lächerlich zu machen oder zu leugnen. Vielmehr ist es das Ziel, darin das Besondere hervorzustellen, es wirklich zu sehen und zu würdigen. Wenn das im Umgang mit den Wundern der Natur so selbstverständlich ist, muss uns das doch auch im Umgang mit einander gelingen können.

Some images from our visit to Giethoorn in the Netherlands.

 

This village has no roads. The nearest main road is a good half a mile away, so most travel by boat around the village. There are some cycle paths as well as a few footpaths.

 

It is one of the locations (along with Birmingham in the UK) which claims to be the Venice of the North. Personally I think that denigrates both locations to compare one to the other.

 

Quite a fascinating place

Here is an immature black-crowned night heron at the Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge, August, 2025. What they turn into as adults is nothing short of miraculous, quite a transformation. The lesson: never underestimate or denigrate the ugly duckling, the late bloomer, etc. They will transform, too!

I’ve watched a lot of African wildlife documentaries and know to respect hyena, but they are still hard to love. Their behavior is fascinating and their hunting prowess admirable, but they always seem dirty to me and don’t exude “cute” or “adorable” for anything other than maybe their mother. That said, my admiration for them exceeds my distaste and I enjoyed observing them both at their den and in the field. They were very numerous in the Maasai Mara, and we saw them repeatedly during the day and I could also hear them calling from my tent at night. The one time the lion pride I was denigrating for their unsophisticated hunting prowess ate, that I witnessed, was when they stole a hyena kill. I’ve attached the “cutest” hyena shot I took, but I still have a hard time associating that word with it. Auf die Gefahr hin, als "Russenversteher" verunglimpft zu werden, poste ich heute mal das erste Foto von den Zwiebeltürmen der russisch-orthodoxen Kathedrale zum heiligen Nikolaus in Wien. Mir geht es heute darum, den architektonischen Reiz von Zwiebeltürmen anhand dieses Fotos greifbar zu vermitteln. Im späten 15. Jahrhundert tauchten die ersten zwiebelförmigen Kuppeln und Zwiebeltürme im asiatischen Samarkand auf. Moslems und orthodoxe Christen verbreiteten diese architektonische Schönheit in der Folge immer weiter nach Süden und Westen und bereits zwei Jahrhunderte später wurden auch in Mitteleuropa verschiedene Gebäude, hauptsächlich christliche (auch katholische) Kirchtürme, derart hübsch ausgestaltet. Wieder ein Beispiel, wie die Natur in der Architektur gefällig nachgeahmt wird !

 

At the risk of being denigrated as a "Russophile", I am posting today the first photo of the onion domes of the Russian Orthodox Cathedral of St. Nicholas in Vienna. My aim today is to convey the architectural appeal of onion domes in a tangible way through this photo. In the late 15th century, the first onion-shaped domes and onion domes appeared in Samarkand, Asia. Muslims and Orthodox Christians subsequently spread this architectural beauty further and further south and west, and already two centuries later various buildings, mainly Christian (also Catholic) church towers, were also decorated in such a beautiful way in Central Europe. Another example of how nature is pleasantly imitated in architecture !

Looking into a tide pool at clustered pink anemones - not sure of the exact species. Tripod, macro lens. Exquisite beauty.

 

This was at the rocky outcrop near the campground at Green Point, at the south end of Long Beach and the north end of Combers Beach. Accessible at low tide, but don't get so caught up looking that you turn your back to the ocean for too long. The tide comes in very fast here. I always work fast at this spot, with frequent looks over my shoulder.

 

I know... f/36... not recommended. Usually I don't stop down quite that far due to the increase in diffraction, but here I did it because shooting through shallow water, even very clear water like this, will denigrate the image somewhat. I figured any slight loss in sharpness would be masked by the water itself and I could use the added depth of field. Maybe this is convoluted and distorted thinking. I really don't absorb tech details all that well, eg. physics of light and light passing through lenses at various focal lengths and f-stops. None of that matters to me if I get an acceptable result.

 

One problem encountered while shooting in wet sand is the tripod feet can sag and sink a little during a long exposure. I must have found a relatively dry spot to set up! It was nine years ago, so the specifics have faded a little. But a 3-second exposure and a sharp result means my platform was stable, and it also means there was minimal breeze (even a slight ripple of the tide pool surface would blur the entire image).

This wren set off what was to be an excellent birding morning. It dashed up, down, and around this bit of wood in heavy pursuit of breakfast. Two birds dashed by the windows at one end of the house. Camera in hand at the other end found first this Carolina wren looking for insects in this decaying bit of yard decor. The flicker was next then the red-breasted nuthatch then after the rain came the cooper's hawk. This is not to denigrate the 'regular' crowd of robins, blue jays, and cardinals.

A few days back, (I don't know when, I was working and I don't watch that crap) some ill informed television wenches apparently insulted all nurses by mocking Miss Colorado who is a registered nurse and rather uniquely represented her profession in a beauty pageant. Well nurses went crazy on social media, posting photographs of themselves with their stethescopes and generally bitching and gnashing teeth. A half hearted apology was rendered by the offending parties. Johnson & Johnson and another major sponsor of the television program pulled advertisement and I'll be damned if another rather pitiful apology was offered as well as an entire hour dedicated to the profession of nursing.

 

Whoop de do. Know what? I don't really give a damn. You can't change the way arrogant people think, although you may get them to stammer out an insincere apology. I don't have time for that crap. I'm to busy working, living and carrying on. And in my spare time, which is sparse, I am studying for an upcoming recertification of the ACLS protocol so I can save their unworthy asses when they start clutching their chests in fear and pain. I've already put in 42 hours in this weekend saving ignorant undeserving asses and if my pager goes off, I'll do it again.

 

So yeah, here's a photograph of me rocking my stethoscope and all the ignorant and arrogant people who want to denigrate me or what I do can kiss my ass. I'm going to bed.

Another abandoned house was demolished recently. Not just any house, but one I had formed an attachment to several years ago. A charming 19th century Italinate style residence that must have once been someone's pride and joy. Even after abandonment the house emanated a sense of stoic dignity. You often see that in classic architecture. Neglect and disrepair may degrade the aesthetic, but cannot denigrate the lines and geometry that define the structure. Such was the case here. I visited the place several times over the years. However I was never able to capture it any better than I did on my first encounter on an autumn day in 2013. It was rainy and the house was shrouded in a cloak of vibrant fall color punctuated with splashes of green. At quick glance it still appeared safe and inviting although in reality it was already failing. I felt a oneness with the house now that I was standing here in front of it rather than merely driving by. That connection always happens when I stop. If I'm lucky it's imbued in my photos. That day I was lucky.

 

Eight years later and I find myself approaching the house location on the adjacent state highway. Instantly something feels off. The sightline is different. I can see a church in the background that the house should be blocking. Then the shocking realization that the house is not blocking the church because the house no longer exists. All that remains is a sea of mud and debris, where once existed someone's home. The only visible trace of the structure are the concrete steps that led up to the front porch. I pulled over and walked about the site trying to comprehend the emptiness. The driveway that once led to a cozy backyard was still there. But there was no coziness here now. Amid the debris I noticed one of those curly, decorative brackets that adorned the eaves of the house. It was broken and laying ignominiously in the mud at my feet. I flashed back to that rainy autumn day and the feelings I had that day. Almost blindly I lifted my camera and began shooting the hell scape that now lay before me. Instinct carries me through times like this; I feel compelled to document the final outcome. But it's as joyless as shooting a funeral.

 

Later I came upon some long lost photos from the 2013 session. Outtakes mostly, but one that caught my eye was taken from an angle that closely mirrored one I took of the demolition site. What you're seeing here is a composite of the two, with the BW defining the new from the old. The still-remaining porch steps now lead up to a ghost house from the past. In a way, combining the two photos was more of an emotional experience than a technical feat. It's not just eight years of the house that have passed, but eight yers of my life. And I've reached a point in that life where each week is precious. The 2013 me had no way foresee the utter devastation in store for this house. Or the many twists and turns in my own life since then. Or Covid. Or so many things. The next eight years will pass even faster than the last. There will be many more twists and turns. I try not to think about that.

At the urging of major U.S. veteran organizations, Armistice Day was renamed Veterans Day in 1954.

 

Remembrance Day, also known as Poppy Day due to the symbol of the remembrance poppy, is a day observed in Commonwealth member states. Countries such as Australia, Canada, and the United Kingdom observe Remembrance Day on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.

 

The image I'm using is that of Papaver argemone, the Prickly Poppy, the only poppy image I have. Lest we forget, I plan on using the same image every year that I'm still around.I'm old enough to remember some of what went on on the "home front," my parents' concerns about England and Poland, and because I had three uncles who served in Europe and the South Pacific, the impact the daily news had on families all around us. I distinctly remember listening to the radio (actually, and you might find this funny, watching the radio) and to this day, I know the voices of Edward R. Murrow, H. V. Kaltenborn, and Winston Churchill.

 

All my relatives returned home safely, but certainly changed. I abhor the lack of education about why the war and the denigrating talk by our last two generations about the Bill of Rights, The Freedom of Speech, and the Constitution. 460,000 U.S. and Canadian soldiers died for those principles.

 

Footnote: My dad was born in Canada, and always had a soft spot for the people and the country.

The Corridors running around the central open space at Fatehpur Sikri are delightful to look at but very very hard to photograph as they are very dimly lit, dirty and the light coming in from the archways very harsh.

 

In India, even in a place like this with so much of history, where keeping the monument in prim and prisine condition should be a priority, there are sellers of bric a brac and souvenirs laid makeshift on the floor.

 

Then there is a problem with the historical rendition of the country itself. We have to understand that India has always been a nation of small kingdoms with a constant stream of invaders coming in from the Khyber Pass to make empires for the Moslems first and then after the advances in ship building and guns, the Portuguese and the English.

 

The subterranean efforts to somehow erase the history by denigrating the invaders and washing out historical texts in the schools and colleges is an ongoing effort.

  

I have kept the lighting muted to hide the problems elsewhere but here there were no such issues.

In 1916, Chamonix changed its name to Chamonix-Mont-Blanc. A name change designed to cement and place, in the public eye, the close ties that the town had established, and wished to preserve, with Mont Blanc the highest mountain in the European Alps.

 

In 1760 Horace Bénédict de Saussure, offered a financial reward to anyone who could complete the first ascent of Mont Blanc (Monte Bianco in Italian). Saussure was a Genevan Aristocrat, Geologist, Physicist and Alpine traveller. He also wrote Les Voyages dans les Alpes documenting his travels and is regarded by many as the founder of Alpinism.

 

Several unsuccessful attempts were made over the next few years to climb Mont Blanc and it wasn’t until 8 August 1786 that the reward was claimed by two local Chamonix men who climbed the mountain from the Chamonix valley. They were Jacques Balmat, a Chamois hunter and crystal collector, and Dr Michel Gabriel Paccard, a Chamonix doctor.

 

A bronze statue was erected in the town’s main square in 1887 to commemorate the centenary of the first ascent. Seen from behind, it is dramatic: two men, one of them pointing to Mont Blanc with an outstretched arm. You can sense the celebration inherent in the stance.

 

Walk around it and view it from the front and you will be surprised to find that the statue is not of Balmat and Paccard the two pioneering Mountaineers, but of Balmat and his ‘financier’ Saussure. What of Paccard? Why was he not part of this commemorative statue?

 

In our era we are familiar with the concept of events and stories being manipulated to massage egos and promote one person over another. It may come as a surprise to learn that the account of the first ascent of Mont Blanc was progressively mis-told and manipulated to promote one man (Balmat) and belittle his companion (Paccard).

 

The instigator of this misrepresentation was Marc-Theodore Bourrit, another Alpine traveller who had himself failed to find a route to the summit of Mont Blanc and who wrote accounts of the successful ascent denigrating the role Paccard played and promoting Balmat as the ‘braver and fitter’ leader. He even wrote to the King of Sardinia (the Chamonix region of France at that time being part of the Kingdom of Sardinia) who on the basis of the account supplied to him by Bourrit lauded Balmat as ‘Balmat le Mont Blanc’. Paccard didn’t take this lying down but reacted by demanding Balmat sign an affidavit denying Bourrit’s version of events. It had, in fact, been Paccard who was the leader of the two and who reached the summit first, Sadly by now the damage was done and Balmat (despite the affidavit that he signed for Paccard) continued to boast in a conceited way about his part in the ascent, and sadly Chamonix chose to believe him. And for many years thereafter articles and books including Balmat’s own autobiography continued to promote Balmat over his companion. With this knowledge it comes as no surprise that the Bronze statue erected at the time of the centenary effectively airbrushed Paccard out from the glory of that first ascent.

Perhaps an insensitive and politically incorrect title for friends participating in the "Black Out" boycott, but not meant to offend or denigrate the choice. This from the storm of a few days ago and, hopefully, the last of the snows of consequence for this season. It is gone from the trees though a rather thick layer remains on the ground, that too rapidly diminishing. No doubt we may even have a wildflower or two by July...;-)

When a narcissist person can no longer control you, they will try to control how others see you.

 

A narcissistic person often seeks to isolate you — slowly, subtly, and insidiously. They may tell you that no one wants contact with you, that you are not invited, that you have no friends, making you doubt your own worth. Over time, constant manipulation and denigration can erode your self-esteem; you begin to question your value, your feelings, your memories. This is not simply a change of mood: it is a deliberate attempt to break your spirit. They will invade your privacy and intimate life, they have no respect for your privacy, they even might be telling the details of your life that are purely private.

 

Gradually, they switch off your inner light — the one that shone before you met them. On long-term narcissistic abuse, you might experience persistent self-doubt, diminished self-worth, emotional exhaustion, loss of memory and symptoms similar to post-traumatic stress.

 

And do not underestimate a narcissist. They are experts in creating a perfect social image. They create an illusion of perfection — the ideal partner, friend, or colleague. Narcissists are skilled manipulators: charming, socially adept, persuasive. This allows them to present a flattering image to the outside world while undermining you.

 

They may destroy your life bit by bit — undermining your relationships, degrading your self-esteem, and telling others (and even you) that you are the problem: unstable, overly emotional, paranoid, hysterical, “needing help.” These tactics serve to deflect responsibility and maintain control over your narrative and theirs.

 

And even if the narcissist finally leaves your life — it is not the end. Narcissistic abuse mostly leaves long-lasting psychological wounds: anxiety, depression, emotional numbness, trust issues, difficulty in relationships, problems making decisions, and a fragile sense of self.

 

But at the end of the day, the darkness they cast over you is not who you really are. And you begin to see again: the light that was dimmed, still glows within you. Healing is not forgetting — it is reclaiming. It is learning that your worth was never theirs to take, and your truth was never theirs to rewrite…

A story of Sicily: the Sicilian Gandhi (but he was not Sicilian ...).

This photographic story is connected, at least in part, with the previous one, whose link is represented by the nephew of the painter Robert Kitson, Miss Daphne Phelps: in life she was a psychiatric social worker (she collaborated with Anna Freud, daughter by Sigmund Freud), on the death of his uncle in 1948 he moved to Sicily to take care of Casa Cuseni, having inherited it: initially he wanted to sell it and then return to England, instead he ended up falling in love with Taormina and Sicily, deciding to stay there for the rest of his life. Daphne ran Casa Cuseni welcoming paying guests, there are many illustrious names of artists, writers, well-known personalities who have stayed there: Danilo Dolci was one of these guests, and it is precisely about him that I wish to speak. He was born in 1924 in Sesana (Trieste), after a somewhat eventful life, in 1952 he moved to Trappeto (between Palermo and Trapani), a country among the poorest and most disadvantaged in Italy: that same year the first of numerous fasts, going to bed and fasting in the bed of a child who died of malnutrition, a protest that will end only when the authorities undertake to build a sewer. Danilo Dolci continues with numerous initiatives, from the publication of a book ("Banditi a Partinico", which makes public opinion aware of the poor living conditions of western Sicily, to this book and many others will follow), to the "strike at reverses ”, when the workers went on strike, hundreds of unemployed began to work to reactivate an abandoned municipal road, an initiative that was then stopped by the police; Dolci also initiates an activity of denunciation of the mafia phenomenon and its relations with politics. There are numerous certificates of esteem and solidarity that he receives from important personalities from Italy and abroad, but despite this, for others Danilo Dolci is a dangerous subversive, to be hindered, denigrated, locked up in prison. Yet Dolci does not pose as a guru, boss, or teacher, his working method is based on the conviction that change is based on the involvement and direct participation of those concerned, his idea of progress enhances local culture and skills; he tries, working closely with the people and the most disadvantaged and oppressed groups of western Sicily, to free the dormant creativity in every person, calling this research "maieutic", a term coming from philosophy, precisely from Socratic maieutics: it is "the 'art of the midwife ", every educational act is to bring to light all the inner potentialities of the one who wants to learn, like a mother who wants to give birth to her own child from her womb, so no to notions imparted a priori, yes to help the student to bring their knowledge to light, using dialogue as a tool; however, Socratic maieutics is unidirectional, while in Danilo Dolci's "reciprocal maieutics", knowledge comes out of experience and its sharing, therefore it presupposes the reciprocity of communication. During meetings with farmers and fishermen, the idea was born to build the dam on the Jato River, which is important for the economic development of the area, but also to remove a powerful weapon in the hands of the mafia, an instrument of power which controlled the few available water resources; however the request for "water for all" will be heavily hindered, popular mobilizations and long fasts will be necessary to finally see the project realized: now the dam exists, and others have been built, thus modifying the lives of thousands of people, with the development of numerous companies and cooperatives. Among the many activities of Dolci, thanks to the contribution of international experts, the experience of the Mirto Educational Center, attended by hundreds of children, should be mentioned. Returning to Daphne Phelps and Casa Cuseni, here is a lithograph by Tono Zancanaro, dedicated to the birth of one of Danilo Dolci's daughters, but, among the most important, there is a correspondence between the pacifist philosopher Bertrand Russel and Daphne Phelps, in which the English thinker invited Robert Kitson's niece to participate in the gatherings of progressive intellectuals and literary and scientific personalities of the time, among them, besides Albert Camus, Jean-Paul Sartre and Carlo Levi, there was Danilo Dolci, sociologist, educator, still recognized today as one of the most important figures of nonviolence worldwide.

Una storia di Sicilia: il Gandhi siciliano (ma siciliano non era…).

Questo racconto fotografico, è connesso, almeno in parte, con quello precedente, il cui anello di congiunzione è rappresentato dalla nipote del pittore Robert Kitson, la signorina Daphne Phelps: lei nella vita era una assistente sociale psichiatrica (lei collaborava con Anna Freud, figlia di Sigmund Freud), alla morte dello zio nel 1948 si trasferì in Sicilia per occuparsi di Casa Cuseni, avendola ereditata: inizialmente la voleva vendere per poi ritornarsene in Inghilterra, invece finì con l’innamorarsi di Taormina e della Sicilia, decidendo di restarvi per il resto della sua vita. Daphne gestiva Casa Cuseni accogliendo ospiti paganti, numerosi sono i nomi illustri di artisti, scrittori, note personalità che vi hanno alloggiato: Danilo Dolci è stato uno di questi ospiti, ed è proprio di lui che desidero parlare. Egli nasce nel 1924 a Sesana (Trieste), dopo una vita un po’ movimentata, nel 1952 si trasferisce a Trappeto (tra Palermo e Trapani), un paese tra i più poveri e disagiati d’Italia: quello stesso anno inizia il primo di numerosi digiuni, coricandosi e digiunando nel letto di un bimbo morto per denutrizione, protesta che terminerà solo quando le autorità si impegneranno a costruire una fogna. Danilo Dolci prosegue con numerose iniziative, dalla pubblicazione di un libro (“Banditi a Partinico”, che mette a conoscenza dell’opinione pubblica delle misere condizioni di vita della Sicilia occidentale, a questo libro poi ne seguiranno molti altri), allo “sciopero alla rovescia”, quando i lavoratori fecero sciopero, centinaia di disoccupati si misero a lavorare per riattivare una strada comunale abbandonata, iniziativa però poi fermata dalla polizia; Dolci avvia anche una attività di denuncia del fenomeno mafioso e dei suoi rapporti con la politica. Eppure Dolci non si atteggia né a santone, capo, od un maestro, il suo metodo di lavoro è basato sulla convinzione che il cambiamento è basato sul coinvolgimento e diretta partecipazione degli interessati, la sua idea di progresso valorizza la cultura e le competenze locali; egli cerca, lavorando a stretto contatto con la gente e le fasce più disagiate ed oppresse della Sicilia occidentale, di liberare la creatività sopita in ogni persona, chiamando tale ricerca “maieutica”, termine proveniente dalla filosofia, precisamente dalla maieutica socratica: è “l’arte della levatrice”, ogni atto educativo è far venire alla luce tutte le potenzialità interiori di colui che vuole imparare, al pari di una madre che vuol far nascere la propria creatura dal suo grembo, quindi no a nozioni impartite a priori, si ad aiutare lo studente a portare alla luce la propria conoscenza, usando il dialogo come strumento; però, la maieutica socratica è unidirezionale, mentre nella “maieutica reciproca” di Danilo Dolci, la conoscenza viene fuori dall’esperienza e dalla sua condivisione, quindi presuppone la reciprocità della comunicazione. Nel corso di riunioni con contadini e pescatori, nasce l’idea di costruire la diga sul fiume Jato, importante per lo sviluppo economico della zona, ma anche togliere un’arma potente in mano alla mafia, che faceva del controllo delle poche risorse idriche disponibili uno strumento di potere, però la richiesta di “acqua per tutti” verrà pesantemente ostacolata, saranno necessarie le mobilitazioni popolari, lunghi digiuni, per vedere infine realizzato il progetto: ora la diga esiste, ed altre sono state poi realizzate, modificando in tal modo la vita di migliaia di persone, con lo svilupparsi di numerose aziende e cooperative. Da menzionare, tra le tante attività di Dolci, grazie al contributo di esperti internazionali, l’esperienza del Centro Educativo di Mirto, frequentato da centinaia di bambini. Ritornando a Daphne Phelps e Casa Cuseni, qui è presente una litografia di Tono Zancanaro, dedicata alla nascita di una delle figlie di Danilo Dolci, ma, cosa tra le più importanti, esiste un carteggio tra il filosofo pacifista Bertrand Russel e Daphne Phelps, nel quale il pensatore inglese invitava la nipote di Robert Kitson a partecipare ai raduni di intellettuali progressisti e personalità letterarie e scientifiche dell’epoca, tra di loro, oltre Albert Camus, Jean-Paul Sartre e Carlo Levi, c’era Danilo Dolci, sociologo, educatore, ancora oggi riconosciuto tra le figure di massimo rilievo della nonviolenza a livello mondiale.

A story of Sicily: the Sicilian Gandhi (but he was not Sicilian ...).

This photographic story is connected, at least in part, with the previous one, whose link is represented by the nephew of the painter Robert Kitson, Miss Daphne Phelps: in life she was a psychiatric social worker (she collaborated with Anna Freud, daughter by Sigmund Freud), on the death of his uncle in 1948 he moved to Sicily to take care of Casa Cuseni, having inherited it: initially he wanted to sell it and then return to England, instead he ended up falling in love with Taormina and Sicily, deciding to stay there for the rest of his life. Daphne ran Casa Cuseni welcoming paying guests, there are many illustrious names of artists, writers, well-known personalities who have stayed there: Danilo Dolci was one of these guests, and it is precisely about him that I wish to speak. He was born in 1924 in Sesana (Trieste), after a somewhat eventful life, in 1952 he moved to Trappeto (between Palermo and Trapani), a country among the poorest and most disadvantaged in Italy: that same year the first of numerous fasts, going to bed and fasting in the bed of a child who died of malnutrition, a protest that will end only when the authorities undertake to build a sewer. The populist politician is one of the terrors of modern day politics. As a rule, they are unpredictable, untrustworthy and usually uninformed, or at least conveniently so for the people to whom they are preaching.

 

The insurgent, worldwide rise of this particular type of creature throughout the last decade, has become alarming in that their rabble rousing is generally based of a dearth of factual information with opponents to their "platform" designated and denigrated as "the enemy of the people". Regrettably, it has a level of success that is both astounding and scary.

 

When I took this photo, I based it on a photo I had seen of a speech given by the most notorious populist of the last century.

You have only one life to be happy ... not for pretend that you are happy.

You think that possessing many things define the value of your person...Let me tell you that you are very poor.

You do not need to denigrate others to show that you are something cool, That can be seen even with the quiet mouth.

During meetings with farmers and fishermen, the idea was born to build the dam on the Jato River, which is important for the economic development of the area, but also to remove a powerful weapon in the hands of the mafia, an instrument of power which controlled the few available water resources; however the request for "water for all" will be heavily hindered, popular mobilizations and long fasts will be necessary to finally see the project realized: now the dam exists, and others have been built, thus modifying the lives of thousands of people, with the development of numerous companies and cooperatives. Among the many activities of Dolci, thanks to the contribution of international experts, the experience of the Mirto Educational Center, attended by hundreds of children, should be mentioned. Returning to Daphne Phelps and Casa Cuseni, here is a lithograph by Tono Zancanaro, dedicated to the birth of one of Danilo Dolci's daughters, but, among the most important, there is a correspondence between the pacifist philosopher Bertrand Russel and Daphne Phelps, in which the English thinker invited Robert Kitson's niece to participate in the gatherings of progressive intellectuals and literary and scientific personalities of the time, among them, besides Albert Camus, Jean-Paul Sartre and Carlo Levi, there was Danilo Dolci, sociologist, educator, still recognized today as one of the most important figures of nonviolence worldwide.

Questo racconto fotografico, è connesso, almeno in parte, con quello precedente, il cui anello di congiunzione è rappresentato dalla nipote del pittore Robert Kitson, la signorina Daphne Phelps: lei nella vita era una assistente sociale psichiatrica (lei collaborava con Anna Freud, figlia di Sigmund Freud), alla morte dello zio nel 1948 si trasferì in Sicilia per occuparsi di Casa Cuseni, avendola ereditata: inizialmente la voleva vendere per poi ritornarsene in Inghilterra, invece finì con l’innamorarsi di Taormina e della Sicilia, decidendo di restarvi per il resto della sua vita. Daphne gestiva Casa Cuseni accogliendo ospiti paganti, numerosi sono i nomi illustri di artisti, scrittori, note personalità che vi hanno alloggiato: Danilo Dolci è stato uno di questi ospiti, ed è proprio di lui che desidero parlare. Egli nasce nel 1924 a Sesana (Trieste), dopo una vita un po’ movimentata, nel 1952 si trasferisce a Trappeto (tra Palermo e Trapani), un paese tra i più poveri e disagiati d’Italia: quello stesso anno inizia il primo di numerosi digiuni, coricandosi e digiunando nel letto di un bimbo morto per denutrizione, protesta che terminerà solo quando le autorità si impegneranno a costruire una fogna. Danilo Dolci prosegue con numerose iniziative, dalla pubblicazione di un libro (“Banditi a Partinico”, che mette a conoscenza dell’opinione pubblica delle misere condizioni di vita della Sicilia occidentale, a questo libro poi ne seguiranno molti altri), allo “sciopero alla rovescia”, quando i lavoratori fecero sciopero, centinaia di disoccupati si misero a lavorare per riattivare una strada comunale abbandonata, iniziativa però poi fermata dalla polizia; Dolci avvia anche una attività di denuncia del fenomeno mafioso e dei suoi rapporti con la politica. Numerosi sono gli attestati di stima e solidarietà che egli riceve da importanti personalità provenienti dall’Italia e dall’estero, ma nonostante ciò per altri Danilo Dolci è un pericoloso sovversivo, da ostacolare, denigrare, chiudere in prigione. Eppure Dolci non si atteggia né a santone, capo, od un maestro, il suo metodo di lavoro è basato sulla convinzione che il cambiamento è basato sul coinvolgimento e diretta partecipazione degli interessati, la sua idea di progresso valorizza la cultura e le competenze locali; egli cerca, lavorando a stretto contatto con la gente e le fasce più disagiate ed oppresse della Sicilia occidentale, di liberare la creatività sopita in ogni persona, chiamando tale ricerca “maieutica”, termine proveniente dalla filosofia, precisamente dalla maieutica socratica: è “l’arte della levatrice”, ogni atto educativo è far venire alla luce tutte le potenzialità interiori di colui che vuole imparare, al pari di una madre che vuol far nascere la propria creatura dal suo grembo, quindi no a nozioni impartite a priori, si ad aiutare lo studente a portare alla luce la propria conoscenza, usando il dialogo come strumento; però, la maieutica socratica è unidirezionale, mentre nella “maieutica reciproca” di Danilo Dolci, la conoscenza viene fuori dall’esperienza e dalla sua condivisione, quindi presuppone la reciprocità della comunicazione. Nel corso di riunioni con contadini e pescatori, nasce l’idea di costruire la diga sul fiume Jato, importante per lo sviluppo economico della zona, ma anche togliere un’arma potente in mano alla mafia, che faceva del controllo delle poche risorse idriche disponibili uno strumento di potere, però la richiesta di “acqua per tutti” verrà pesantemente ostacolata, saranno necessarie le mobilitazioni popolari, lunghi digiuni, per vedere infine realizzato il progetto: ora la diga esiste, ed altre sono state poi realizzate, modificando in tal modo la vita di migliaia di persone, con lo svilupparsi di numerose aziende e cooperative. Da menzionare, tra le tante attività di Dolci, grazie al contributo di esperti internazionali, l’esperienza del Centro Educativo di Mirto, frequentato da centinaia di bambini. Ritornando a Daphne Phelps e Casa Cuseni, qui è presente una litografia di Tono Zancanaro, dedicata alla nascita di una delle figlie di Danilo Dolci, ma, cosa tra le più importanti, esiste un carteggio tra il filosofo pacifista Bertrand Russel e Daphne Phelps, nel quale il pensatore inglese invitava la nipote di Robert Kitson a partecipare ai raduni di intellettuali progressisti e personalità letterarie e scientifiche dell’epoca, tra di loro, oltre Albert Camus, Jean-Paul Sartre e Carlo Levi, c’era Danilo Dolci, sociologo, educatore, ancora oggi riconosciuto tra le figure di massimo rilievo della nonviolenza a livello mondiale.

A story of Sicily: the Sicilian Gandhi (but he was not Sicilian ...).

This photographic story is connected, at least in part, with the previous one, whose link is represented by the nephew of the painter Robert Kitson, Miss Daphne Phelps: in life she was a psychiatric social worker (she collaborated with Anna Freud, daughter by Sigmund Freud), on the death of his uncle in 1948 he moved to Sicily to take care of Casa Cuseni, having inherited it: initially he wanted to sell it and then return to England, instead he ended up falling in love with Taormina and Sicily, deciding to stay there for the rest of his life. Daphne ran Casa Cuseni welcoming paying guests, there are many illustrious names of artists, writers, well-known personalities who have stayed there: Danilo Dolci was one of these guests, and it is precisely about him that I wish to speak. He was born in 1924 in Sesana (Trieste), after a somewhat eventful life, in 1952 he moved to Trappeto (between Palermo and Trapani), a country among the poorest and most disadvantaged in Italy: that same year the first of numerous fasts, going to bed and fasting in the bed of a child who died of malnutrition, a protest that will end only when the authorities undertake to build a sewer. Danilo Dolci continues with numerous initiatives, from the publication of a book ("Banditi a Partinico", which makes public opinion aware of the poor living conditions of western Sicily, to this book and many others will follow), to the "strike at reverses ”, when the workers went on strike, hundreds of unemployed began to work to reactivate an abandoned municipal road, an initiative that was then stopped by the police; Dolci also initiates an activity of denunciation of the mafia phenomenon and its relations with politics. There are numerous certificates of esteem and solidarity that he receives from important personalities from Italy and abroad, but despite this, for others Danilo Dolci is a dangerous subversive, to be hindered, denigrated, locked up in prison. Yet Dolci does not pose as a guru, boss, or teacher, his working method is based on the conviction that change is based on the involvement and direct participation of those concerned, his idea of progress enhances local culture and skills; he tries, working closely with the people and the most disadvantaged and oppressed groups of western Sicily, to free the dormant creativity in every person, calling this research "maieutic", a term coming from philosophy, precisely from Socratic maieutics: it is "the 'art of the midwife ", every educational act is to bring to light all the inner potentialities of the one who wants to learn, like a mother who wants to give birth to her own child from her womb, so no to notions imparted a priori, yes to help the student to bring their knowledge to light, using dialogue as a tool; however, Socratic maieutics is unidirectional, while in Danilo Dolci's "reciprocal maieutics", knowledge comes out of experience and its sharing, therefore it presupposes the reciprocity of communication. Daphne gestiva Casa Cuseni accogliendo ospiti paganti, numerosi sono i nomi illustri di artisti, scrittori, note personalità che vi hanno alloggiato: Danilo Dolci è stato uno di questi ospiti, ed è proprio di lui che desidero parlare. Egli nasce nel 1924 a Sesana (Trieste), dopo una vita un po’ movimentata, nel 1952 si trasferisce a Trappeto (tra Palermo e Trapani), un paese tra i più poveri e disagiati d’Italia: quello stesso anno inizia il primo di numerosi digiuni, coricandosi e digiunando nel letto di un bimbo morto per denutrizione, protesta che terminerà solo quando le autorità si impegneranno a costruire una fogna. Danilo Dolci prosegue con numerose iniziative, dalla pubblicazione di un libro (“Banditi a Partinico”, che mette a conoscenza dell’opinione pubblica delle misere condizioni di vita della Sicilia occidentale, a questo libro poi ne seguiranno molti altri), allo “sciopero alla rovescia”, quando i lavoratori fecero sciopero, centinaia di disoccupati si misero a lavorare per riattivare una strada comunale abbandonata, iniziativa però poi fermata dalla polizia; Dolci avvia anche una attività di denuncia del fenomeno mafioso e dei suoi rapporti con la politica. Numerosi sono gli attestati di stima e solidarietà che egli riceve da importanti personalità provenienti dall’Italia e dall’estero, ma nonostante ciò per altri Danilo Dolci è un pericoloso sovversivo, da ostacolare, denigrare, chiudere in prigione. Eppure Dolci non si atteggia né a santone, capo, od un maestro, il suo metodo di lavoro è basato sulla convinzione che il cambiamento è basato sul coinvolgimento e diretta partecipazione degli interessati, la sua idea di progresso valorizza la cultura e le competenze locali; egli cerca, lavorando a stretto contatto con la gente e le fasce più disagiate ed oppresse della Sicilia occidentale, di liberare la creatività sopita in ogni persona, chiamando tale ricerca “maieutica”, termine proveniente dalla filosofia, precisamente dalla maieutica socratica: è “l’arte della levatrice”, ogni atto educativo è far venire alla luce tutte le potenzialità interiori di colui che vuole imparare, al pari di una madre che vuol far nascere la propria creatura dal suo grembo, quindi no a nozioni impartite a priori, si ad aiutare lo studente a portare alla luce la propria conoscenza, usando il dialogo come strumento; però, la maieutica socratica è unidirezionale, mentre nella “maieutica reciproca” di Danilo Dolci, la conoscenza viene fuori dall’esperienza e dalla sua condivisione, quindi presuppone la reciprocità della comunicazione. Nel corso di riunioni con contadini e pescatori, nasce l’idea di costruire la diga sul fiume Jato, importante per lo sviluppo economico della zona, ma anche togliere un’arma potente in mano alla mafia, che faceva del controllo delle poche risorse idriche disponibili uno strumento di potere, però la richiesta di “acqua per tutti” verrà pesantemente ostacolata, saranno necessarie le mobilitazioni popolari, lunghi digiuni, per vedere infine realizzato il progetto: ora la diga esiste, ed altre sono state poi realizzate, modificando in tal modo la vita di migliaia di persone, con lo svilupparsi di numerose aziende e cooperative. Da menzionare, tra le tante attività di Dolci, grazie al contributo di esperti internazionali, l’esperienza del Centro Educativo di Mirto, frequentato da centinaia di bambini. Ritornando a Daphne Phelps e Casa Cuseni, qui è presente una litografia di Tono Zancanaro, dedicata alla nascita di una delle figlie di Danilo Dolci, ma, cosa tra le più importanti, esiste un carteggio tra il filosofo pacifista Bertrand Russel e Daphne Phelps, nel quale il pensatore inglese invitava la nipote di Robert Kitson a partecipare ai raduni di intellettuali progressisti e personalità letterarie e scientifiche dell’epoca, tra di loro, oltre Albert Camus, Jean-Paul Sartre e Carlo Levi, c’era Danilo Dolci, sociologo, educatore, ancora oggi riconosciuto tra le figure di massimo rilievo della nonviolenza a livello mondiale.

I fear we are witnessing an assault on truth and expertise.

 

In a recent article, Guardian journalist Hadley Freeman observed how the in-coming US government has a very different culture that is bent on consciously blurring the boundaries between what is real and reasonable and what is not.

 

The Trump administration has alienated itself from both the mainstream media and its own intelligence community. It is talking about expanding the Washington press corps to include bloggers and conspiracy web sites and appears bent on exploiting controversy and criticism as a means to create an unfathomable distraction.

 

All of which beggars the question – ‘From what are we being distracted?’

 

Freeman writes – ‘The denigration of experts ….. is an essential component to this bullshitting culture, because expertise provides a bulwark against nonsense.’

 

Without a recognised standard for scrutinising information and reporting on events, the ensuing confusion and nonsense would likely provide an ideal environment for corrupt or dictatorial government.

 

This is why we have trained journalists and journalistic standards.

 

If there’s no agreement on what is real, what is happening or why, then the opportunity for unscrupulous leadership increases because there is no agreement on what is moral or honest either.

 

In a maelstrom there is no up or down. No right or wrong – and I fear we are witnessing how fascism works.

A story of Sicily: the Sicilian Gandhi (but he was not Sicilian ...).

This photographic story is connected, at least in part, with the previous one, whose link is represented by the nephew of the painter Robert Kitson, Miss Daphne Phelps: in life she was a psychiatric social worker (she collaborated with Anna Freud, daughter by Sigmund Freud), on the death of his uncle in 1948 he moved to Sicily to take care of Casa Cuseni, having inherited it: initially he wanted to sell it and then return to England, instead he ended up falling in love with Taormina and Sicily, deciding to stay there for the rest of his life. Daphne ran Casa Cuseni welcoming paying guests, there are many illustrious names of artists, writers, well-known personalities who have stayed there: Danilo Dolci was one of these guests, and it is precisely about him that I wish to speak. He was born in 1924 in Sesana (Trieste), after a somewhat eventful life, in 1952 he moved to Trappeto (between Palermo and Trapani), a country among the poorest and most disadvantaged in Italy: that same year the first of numerous fasts, going to bed and fasting in the bed of a child who died of malnutrition, a protest that will end only when the authorities undertake to build a sewer. Danilo Dolci continues with numerous initiatives, from the publication of a book ("Banditi a Partinico", which makes public opinion aware of the poor living conditions of western Sicily, to this book and many others will follow), to the "strike at reverses ”, when the workers went on strike, hundreds of unemployed began to work to reactivate an abandoned municipal road, an initiative that was then stopped by the police; Dolci also initiates an activity of denunciation of the mafia phenomenon and its relations with politics. There are numerous certificates of esteem and solidarity that he receives from important personalities from Italy and abroad, but despite this, for others Danilo Dolci is a dangerous subversive, to be hindered, denigrated, locked up in prison. Yet Dolci does not pose as a guru, boss, or teacher, his working method is based on the conviction that change is based on the involvement and direct participation of those concerned, his idea of progress enhances local culture and skills; he tries, working closely with the people and the most disadvantaged and oppressed groups of western Sicily, to free the dormant creativity in every person, calling this research "maieutic", a term coming from philosophy, precisely from Socratic maieutics: it is "the 'art of the midwife ", every educational act is to bring to light all the inner potentialities of the one who wants to learn, like a mother who wants to give birth to her own child from her womb, so no to notions imparted a priori, yes to help the student to bring their knowledge to light, using dialogue as a tool; however, Socratic maieutics is unidirectional, while in Danilo Dolci's "reciprocal maieutics", knowledge comes out of experience and its sharing, therefore it presupposes the reciprocity of communication. During meetings with farmers and fishermen, the idea was born to build the dam on the Jato River, which is important for the economic development of the area, but also to remove a powerful weapon in the hands of the mafia, an instrument of power which controlled the few available water resources; however the request for "water for all" will be heavily hindered, popular mobilizations and long fasts will be necessary to finally see the project realized: now the dam exists, and others have been built, thus modifying the lives of thousands of people, with the development of numerous companies and cooperatives. Among the many activities of Dolci, thanks to the contribution of international experts, the experience of the Mirto Educational Center, attended by hundreds of children, should be mentioned. Returning to Daphne Phelps and Casa Cuseni, here is a lithograph by Tono Zancanaro, dedicated to the birth of one of Danilo Dolci's daughters, but, among the most important, there is a correspondence between the pacifist philosopher Bertrand Russel and Daphne Phelps, in which the English thinker invited Robert Kitson's niece to participate in the gatherings of progressive intellectuals and literary and scientific personalities of the time, among them, besides Albert Camus, Jean-Paul Sartre and Carlo Levi, there was Danilo Dolci, sociologist, educator, still recognized today as one of the most important figures of nonviolence worldwide.

Daphne gestiva Casa Cuseni accogliendo ospiti paganti, numerosi sono i nomi illustri di artisti, scrittori, note personalità che vi hanno alloggiato: Danilo Dolci è stato uno di questi ospiti, ed è proprio di lui che desidero parlare. Egli nasce nel 1924 a Sesana (Trieste), dopo una vita un po’ movimentata, nel 1952 si trasferisce a Trappeto (tra Palermo e Trapani), un paese tra i più poveri e disagiati d’Italia: quello stesso anno inizia il primo di numerosi digiuni, coricandosi e digiunando nel letto di un bimbo morto per denutrizione, protesta che terminerà solo quando le autorità si impegneranno a costruire una fogna. Danilo Dolci prosegue con numerose iniziative, dalla pubblicazione di un libro (“Banditi a Partinico”, che mette a conoscenza dell’opinione pubblica delle misere condizioni di vita della Sicilia occidentale, a questo libro poi ne seguiranno molti altri), allo “sciopero alla rovescia”, quando i lavoratori fecero sciopero, centinaia di disoccupati si misero a lavorare per riattivare una strada comunale abbandonata, iniziativa però poi fermata dalla polizia; Dolci avvia anche una attività di denuncia del fenomeno mafioso e dei suoi rapporti con la politica. Numerosi sono gli attestati di stima e solidarietà che egli riceve da importanti personalità provenienti dall’Italia e dall’estero, ma nonostante ciò per altri Danilo Dolci è un pericoloso sovversivo, da ostacolare, denigrare, chiudere in prigione. Eppure Dolci non si atteggia né a santone, capo, od un maestro, il suo metodo di lavoro è basato sulla convinzione che il cambiamento è basato sul coinvolgimento e diretta partecipazione degli interessati, la sua idea di progresso valorizza la cultura e le competenze locali; egli cerca, lavorando a stretto contatto con la gente e le fasce più disagiate ed oppresse della Sicilia occidentale, di liberare la creatività sopita in ogni persona, chiamando tale ricerca “maieutica”, termine proveniente dalla filosofia, precisamente dalla maieutica socratica: è “l’arte della levatrice”, ogni atto educativo è far venire alla luce tutte le potenzialità interiori di colui che vuole imparare, al pari di una madre che vuol far nascere la propria creatura dal suo grembo, quindi no a nozioni impartite a priori, si ad aiutare lo studente a portare alla luce la propria conoscenza, usando il dialogo come strumento; però, la maieutica socratica è unidirezionale, mentre nella “maieutica reciproca” di Danilo Dolci, la conoscenza viene fuori dall’esperienza e dalla sua condivisione, quindi presuppone la reciprocità della comunicazione. Nel corso di riunioni con contadini e pescatori, nasce l’idea di costruire la diga sul fiume Jato, importante per lo sviluppo economico della zona, ma anche togliere un’arma potente in mano alla mafia, che faceva del controllo delle poche risorse idriche disponibili uno strumento di potere, però la richiesta di “acqua per tutti” verrà pesantemente ostacolata, saranno necessarie le mobilitazioni popolari, lunghi digiuni, per vedere infine realizzato il progetto: ora la diga esiste, ed altre sono state poi realizzate, modificando in tal modo la vita di migliaia di persone, con lo svilupparsi di numerose aziende e cooperative. Da menzionare, tra le tante attività di Dolci, grazie al contributo di esperti internazionali, l’esperienza del Centro Educativo di Mirto, frequentato da centinaia di bambini. Ritornando a Daphne Phelps e Casa Cuseni, qui è presente una litografia di Tono Zancanaro, dedicata alla nascita di una delle figlie di Danilo Dolci, ma, cosa tra le più importanti, esiste un carteggio tra il filosofo pacifista Bertrand Russel e Daphne Phelps, nel quale il pensatore inglese invitava la nipote di Robert Kitson a partecipare ai raduni di intellettuali progressisti e personalità letterarie e scientifiche dell’epoca, tra di loro, oltre Albert Camus, Jean-Paul Sartre e Carlo Levi, c’era Danilo Dolci, sociologo, educatore, ancora oggi riconosciuto tra le figure di massimo rilievo della nonviolenza a livello mondiale.

Ayudando al Alzheimer, algo de uf..

Agotador incluso si no estamos solos frente al problema...

Pero lo peor es cuando la persona enferma siempre te ha denigrado.

Que ella solo te veía como un fracaso, una fuente de problemas...

Así que si no te gustan tus hijos lo suficiente, existe el riesgo de que termines en hepad y eso es normal.

One of J. James’ 13 Leyland Atlanteans is seen at an unknown location in Dyfed. RTH639 was delivered in May 1959, one of a batch of 5 which included RTH637, the first Atlantean to enter revenue earning service.

This example entered service as No.229 but by the time of this picture had become No.1229.

The blind is set for “East Pit”, maybe our resident Welsh bus experts can identify the location . A military lorry of some description can be seen to the right.

The Atlantean’s Weymann lowbridge body shows some battle scars both above and below the cab as, incidentally, does the sister vehicle behind. Far be it from me to denigrate the company’s drivers!

James' Atlanteans were later absorbed into the fleet of South Wales Transport and some were exchanged with Oxford South Midland for highbridge front entrance Willowbrook bodied AEC Regent Vs.

The Wolf Sanctuary - Lancaster County

Lititz, PA

 

There are approximately 40 wolves, or wolf/dog hybrids on a 100+ acres of private land. The wolves are brought there from as far away as Montana, but most come from the East coast states. Some of them are brought there because they were injured, some have been taken from NYC, as it is illegal in the state of New York to keep wolves or hybrids as pets. So, if the police find a wolf as a pet they are bound to take it and find a sanctuary for it. In Pennsylvania, where I live it is illegal to posses a wolf or hybrid.

There are some states in the USA where it is legal to have a wolf on your property, yet many people find that as the wolf grows, it becomes too difficult to keep a wolf under control, and they are brought to a sanctuary for proper care.

This particular wolf sanctuary separates the wolves by groups, as wolves can be territorial as they are in the wild with both the Alphas and the Betas dominating the lesser wolves.

Most obviously 100+ acres, dividing various packs by fences, cannot be a substitute for having the enormous area, where a wolf might travel 100 miles in a single day.

However, this is a sanctuary for wolves that need assistance. It is not a Zoo and it difficult to get a good photo of the wolves. There are two separate fences to shoot through, which tends to denigrate the photo quality, and when a wolf is too close to the inner fence, there is no way to avoid having the fence most obviously in the photo.

The outermost fence is where a person can view the wolves. I’ll guess that the outermost fence is 10 feet high and the innermost fence is over 16 feet high topped by barbed wire. The two fences are separated by about 6-8 feet, and the wolves never get closer than the innermost fence.

The sanctuary is sanctioned by the state of Pennsylvania, but does not accept any government funding. The funding comes from the tours and donations.

The wolves eat 3-4 pounds of raw meat every other day, and I happened to arrive on a day that they had been fed, so they were less active while their bellies were full.

And there no vantage points to get a perspective over top the fences.

Wolves have been killed off from Pennsylvania for well over a hundred years. They persist in the wilderness of Alaska and some states in the Northwestern USA, as they have been reintroduced into Montana and into Wyoming, specifically into Yellowstone National Park. Though it has not been easily achieved based on the longstanding perception that the wolf had no importance in environment, except to be seen as savage killers.

Ranchers are often the most intolerant of the wolf along with the politicians who represent the ranchers, as wolves has been known to kill livestock along with the politicians who represent the ranchers. But the killing of ranch animals is very small, and many states have set up a fund to reimburse the ranchers for any loss of livestock that they own.

It is also necessary in both public and private life to refrain consistently and empathically from inflicting pain. To act or speak violently out of spite, chauvinism, or self-interest, to impoverish, exploit or deny basic rights to anybody, and to incite hatred by denigrating others - even our enemies - is a denial of our common humanity. We acknowledge that we have failed to live compassionately and that some have even increased the sum of human misery in the name of religion.

 

We therefore call upon all men and women ~ to restore compassion to the centre of morality and religion ~ to return to the ancient principle that any interpretation of scripture that breeds violence, hatred or disdain is illegitimate ~ to ensure that youth are given accurate and respectful information about other traditions, religions and cultures ~ to encourage a positive appreciation of cultural and religious diversity ~ to cultivate an informed empathy with the suffering of all human beings, even those regarded as enemies.

 

We urgently need to make compassion a clear, luminous and dynamic force in our polarized world. Rooted in a principled determination to transcend selfishness, compassion can break down political, dogmatic, ideological and religious boundaries. Born of our deep interdependence, compassion is essential to human relationships and to a fulfilled humanity. It is the path to enlightenment, and indispensible to the creation of a just economy and a peaceful global community.

A story of Sicily: the Sicilian Gandhi (but he was not Sicilian ...).

This photographic story is connected, at least in part, with the previous one, whose link is represented by the nephew of the painter Robert Kitson, Miss Daphne Phelps: in life she was a psychiatric social worker (she collaborated with Anna Freud, daughter by Sigmund Freud), on the death of his uncle in 1948 he moved to Sicily to take care of Casa Cuseni, having inherited it: initially he wanted to sell it and then return to England, instead he ended up falling in love with Taormina and Sicily, deciding to stay there for the rest of his life. Daphne ran Casa Cuseni welcoming paying guests, there are many illustrious names of artists, writers, well-known personalities who have stayed there: Danilo Dolci was one of these guests, and it is precisely about him that I wish to speak. He was born in 1924 in Sesana (Trieste), after a somewhat eventful life, in 1952 he moved to Trappeto (between Palermo and Trapani), a country among the poorest and most disadvantaged in Italy: that same year the first of numerous fasts, going to bed and fasting in the bed of a child who died of malnutrition, a protest that will end only when the authorities undertake to build a sewer. Danilo Dolci continues with numerous initiatives, from the publication of a book ("Banditi a Partinico", which makes public opinion aware of the poor living conditions of western Sicily, to this book and many others will follow), to the "strike at reverses ”, when the workers went on strike, hundreds of unemployed began to work to reactivate an abandoned municipal road, an initiative that was then stopped by the police; Dolci also initiates an activity of denunciation of the mafia phenomenon and its relations with politics. There are numerous certificates of esteem and solidarity that he receives from important personalities from Italy and abroad, but despite this, for others Danilo Dolci is a dangerous subversive, to be hindered, denigrated, locked up in prison. Yet Dolci does not pose as a guru, boss, or teacher, his working method is based on the conviction that change is based on the involvement and direct participation of those concerned, his idea of progress enhances local culture and skills; he tries, working closely with the people and the most disadvantaged and oppressed groups of western Sicily, to free the dormant creativity in every person, calling this research "maieutic", a term coming from philosophy, precisely from Socratic maieutics: it is "the 'art of the midwife ", every educational act is to bring to light all the inner potentialities of the one who wants to learn, like a mother who wants to give birth to her own child from her womb, so no to notions imparted a priori, yes to help the student to bring their knowledge to light, using dialogue as a tool; however, Socratic maieutics is unidirectional, while in Danilo Dolci's "reciprocal maieutics", knowledge comes out of experience and its sharing, therefore it presupposes the reciprocity of communication. During meetings with farmers and fishermen, the idea was born to build the dam on the Jato River, which is important for the economic development of the area, but also to remove a powerful weapon in the hands of the mafia, an instrument of power which controlled the few available water resources; however the request for "water for all" will be heavily hindered, popular mobilizations and long fasts will be necessary to finally see the project realized: now the dam exists, and others have been built, thus modifying the lives of thousands of people, with the development of numerous companies and cooperatives. Among the many activities of Dolci, thanks to the contribution of international experts, the experience of the Mirto Educational Center, attended by hundreds of children, should be mentioned. Returning to Daphne Phelps and Casa Cuseni, here is a lithograph by Tono Zancanaro, dedicated to the birth of one of Danilo Dolci's daughters, but, among the most important, there is a correspondence between the pacifist philosopher Bertrand Russel and Daphne Phelps, in which the English thinker invited Robert Kitson's niece to participate in the gatherings of progressive intellectuals and literary and scientific personalities of the time, among them, besides Albert Camus, Jean-Paul Sartre and Carlo Levi, there was Danilo Dolci, sociologist, educator, still recognized today as one of the most important figures of nonviolence worldwide.

Ritornando a Daphne Phelps e Casa Cuseni, qui è presente una litografia di Tono Zancanaro, dedicata alla nascita di una delle figlie di Danilo Dolci, ma, cosa tra le più importanti, esiste un carteggio tra il filosofo pacifista Bertrand Russel e Daphne Phelps, nel quale il pensatore inglese invitava la nipote di Robert Kitson a partecipare ai raduni di intellettuali progressisti e personalità letterarie e scientifiche dell’epoca, tra di loro, oltre Albert Camus, Jean-Paul Sartre e Carlo Levi, c’era Danilo Dolci, sociologo, educatore, ancora oggi riconosciuto tra le figure di massimo rilievo della nonviolenza a livello mondiale.

A story of Sicily: the Sicilian Gandhi (but he was not Sicilian ...).

This photographic story is connected, at least in part, with the previous one, whose link is represented by the nephew of the painter Robert Kitson, Miss Daphne Phelps: in life she was a psychiatric social worker (she collaborated with Anna Freud, daughter by Sigmund Freud), on the death of his uncle in 1948 he moved to Sicily to take care of Casa Cuseni, having inherited it: initially he wanted to sell it and then return to England, instead he ended up falling in love with Taormina and Sicily, deciding to stay there for the rest of his life. Daphne ran Casa Cuseni welcoming paying guests, there are many illustrious names of artists, writers, well-known personalities who have stayed there: Danilo Dolci was one of these guests, and it is precisely about him that I wish to speak. He was born in 1924 in Sesana (Trieste), after a somewhat eventful life, in 1952 he moved to Trappeto (between Palermo and Trapani), a country among the poorest and most disadvantaged in Italy: that same year the first of numerous fasts, going to bed and fasting in the bed of a child who died of malnutrition, a protest that will end only when the authorities undertake to build a sewer. Danilo Dolci continues with numerous initiatives, from the publication of a book ("Banditi a Partinico", which makes public opinion aware of the poor living conditions of western Sicily, to this book and many others will follow), to the "strike at reverses ”, when the workers went on strike, hundreds of unemployed began to work to reactivate an abandoned municipal road, an initiative that was then stopped by the police; Dolci also initiates an activity of denunciation of the mafia phenomenon and its relations with politics. There are numerous certificates of esteem and solidarity that he receives from important personalities from Italy and abroad, but despite this, for others Danilo Dolci is a dangerous subversive, to be hindered, denigrated, locked up in prison. Yet Dolci does not pose as a guru, boss, or teacher, his working method is based on the conviction that change is based on the involvement and direct participation of those concerned, his idea of progress enhances local culture and skills; he tries, working closely with the people and the most disadvantaged and oppressed groups of western Sicily, to free the dormant creativity in every person, calling this research "maieutic", a term coming from philosophy, precisely from Socratic maieutics: it is "the 'art of the midwife ", every educational act is to bring to light all the inner potentialities of the one who wants to learn, like a mother who wants to give birth to her own child from her womb, so no to notions imparted a priori, yes to help the student to bring their knowledge to light, using dialogue as a tool; however, Socratic maieutics is unidirectional, while in Danilo Dolci's "reciprocal maieutics", knowledge comes out of experience and its sharing, therefore it presupposes the reciprocity of communication. During meetings with farmers and fishermen, the idea was born to build the dam on the Jato River, which is important for the economic development of the area, but also to remove a powerful weapon in the hands of the mafia, an instrument of power which controlled the few available water resources; however the request for "water for all" will be heavily hindered, popular mobilizations and long fasts will be necessary to finally see the project realized: now the dam exists, and others have been built, thus modifying the lives of thousands of people, with the development of numerous companies and cooperatives. Among the many activities of Dolci, thanks to the contribution of international experts, the experience of the Mirto Educational Center, attended by hundreds of children, should be mentioned. Returning to Daphne Phelps and Casa Cuseni, here is a lithograph by Tono Zancanaro, dedicated to the birth of one of Danilo Dolci's daughters, but, among the most important, there is a correspondence between the pacifist philosopher Bertrand Russel and Daphne Phelps, in which the English thinker invited Robert Kitson's niece to participate in the gatherings of progressive intellectuals and literary and scientific personalities of the time, among them, besides Albert Camus, Jean-Paul Sartre and Carlo Levi, there was Danilo Dolci, sociologist, educator, still recognized today as one of the most important figures of nonviolence worldwide.

Una storia di Sicilia: il Gandhi siciliano (ma siciliano non era…).

Questo racconto fotografico, è connesso, almeno in parte, con quello precedente, il cui anello di congiunzione è rappresentato dalla nipote del pittore Robert Kitson, la signorina Daphne Phelps: lei nella vita era una assistente sociale psichiatrica (lei collaborava con Anna Freud, figlia di Sigmund Freud), alla morte dello zio nel 1948 si trasferì in Sicilia per occuparsi di Casa Cuseni, avendola ereditata: inizialmente la voleva vendere per poi ritornarsene in Inghilterra, invece finì con l’innamorarsi di Taormina e della Sicilia, decidendo di restarvi per il resto della sua vita. Daphne gestiva Casa Cuseni accogliendo ospiti paganti, numerosi sono i nomi illustri di artisti, scrittori, note personalità che vi hanno alloggiato: Danilo Dolci è stato uno di questi ospiti, ed è proprio di lui che desidero parlare. Egli nasce nel 1924 a Sesana (Trieste), dopo una vita un po’ movimentata, nel 1952 si trasferisce a Trappeto (tra Palermo e Trapani), un paese tra i più poveri e disagiati d’Italia: quello stesso anno inizia il primo di numerosi digiuni, coricandosi e digiunando nel letto di un bimbo morto per denutrizione, protesta che terminerà solo quando le autorità si impegneranno a costruire una fogna. Danilo Dolci prosegue con numerose iniziative, dalla pubblicazione di un libro (“Banditi a Partinico”, che mette a conoscenza dell’opinione pubblica delle misere condizioni di vita della Sicilia occidentale, a questo libro poi ne seguiranno molti altri), allo “sciopero alla rovescia”, quando i lavoratori fecero sciopero, centinaia di disoccupati si misero a lavorare per riattivare una strada comunale abbandonata, iniziativa però poi fermata dalla polizia; Dolci avvia anche una attività di denuncia del fenomeno mafioso e dei suoi rapporti con la politica. Numerosi sono gli attestati di stima e solidarietà che egli riceve da importanti personalità provenienti dall’Italia e dall’estero, ma nonostante ciò per altri Danilo Dolci è un pericoloso sovversivo, da ostacolare, denigrare, chiudere in prigione. Eppure Dolci non si atteggia né a santone, capo, od un maestro, il suo metodo di lavoro è basato sulla convinzione che il cambiamento è basato sul coinvolgimento e diretta partecipazione degli interessati, la sua idea di progresso valorizza la cultura e le competenze locali; egli cerca, lavorando a stretto contatto con la gente e le fasce più disagiate ed oppresse della Sicilia occidentale, di liberare la creatività sopita in ogni persona, chiamando tale ricerca “maieutica”, termine proveniente dalla filosofia, precisamente dalla maieutica socratica: è “l’arte della levatrice”, ogni atto educativo è far venire alla luce tutte le potenzialità interiori di colui che vuole imparare, al pari di una madre che vuol far nascere la propria creatura dal suo grembo, quindi no a nozioni impartite a priori, si ad aiutare lo studente a portare alla luce la propria conoscenza, usando il dialogo come strumento; però, la maieutica socratica è unidirezionale, mentre nella “maieutica reciproca” di Danilo Dolci, la conoscenza viene fuori dall’esperienza e dalla sua condivisione, quindi presuppone la reciprocità della comunicazione. Nel corso di riunioni con contadini e pescatori, nasce l’idea di costruire la diga sul fiume Jato, importante per lo sviluppo economico della zona, ma anche togliere un’arma potente in mano alla mafia, che faceva del controllo delle poche risorse idriche disponibili uno strumento di potere, però la richiesta di “acqua per tutti” verrà pesantemente ostacolata, saranno necessarie le mobilitazioni popolari, lunghi digiuni, per vedere infine realizzato il progetto: ora la diga esiste, ed altre sono state poi realizzate, modificando in tal modo la vita di migliaia di persone, con lo svilupparsi di numerose aziende e cooperative. Da menzionare, tra le tante attività di Dolci, grazie al contributo di esperti internazionali, l’esperienza del Centro Educativo di Mirto, frequentato da centinaia di bambini. When I thought of what a district 18 might look like, I thought of the "teched out" tropical world of Scarif in Rogue One.

 

. . . the Xai Neptak people of Adamah 2 emigrated to District 18 looking to find new opportunities, new wealth, and new acceptance. But when their ancient ways are denigrated by their neighbors and their skills unappreciated by their employers, many channel their anger into designing hover bikes that reflect their ancestral identity. However, anger soon begins to overflow into acts of rebellion. Will the elders of the Xai Neptak be able to guide their young ones into a more peaceful way of living . . . or will the youth be guided by their anger into conflict and violence. Only time will tell.

 

I had a lot of fun with this contest. And I got to use some old Exo-Force parts (my favorite theme ever). Good times!
