¡Ey!

Amritsar - Eight police personnel were today booked for the death of Shiromani Akali Dal leader Mukhjit Singh Mukha in a “fake” encounter in June last year.

They have been charged under Section 304 of the IPC (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and will be arrested soon, said Police Commissioner Amar Singh Chahal. A case was registered on the recommendations of a Special Investigating Team (SIT) constituted to probe the murder.

Those booked are Sub-Inspector Ramesh Kumar, in charge of the anti-narcotic cell at that time, ASI Joginder Singh, Head Constables Ranbir Singh, Rajesh Kumar, Jasbir Singh, Sandeep Kumar and Navjot Singh and Constable Satwinderjit Singh.

Mukha was shot near Mudhal village on June 16, 2015, when a police party was searching for notorious Gurdaspur gangster Jaggu Bhagwanpurian.

On Sub-Inspector Ramesh Kumar’s statement that the “suspect” had opened fire at the police and had been killed in the retaliatory firing, Mukha was booked for attempt to murder and under the Arms Act.

The killing triggered angry protests by the residents and local politicians and the city police had to suspend its two officers who had led the team that killed Mukha. Also, 10 police personnel were transferred.

The police claimed it was a case of mistaken identity. This was contested by Mukha’s family. A preliminary probe found several chinks in the police story and so did the SIT.

Forensic teams that visited the “encounter” site said they had found no evidence to suggest that Mukha had fired at the police team.

September 30, 2018

Winnipeg, Manitoba

A round dance was held at Portage and Main to commemorate the damage wrought by the Canadian Indian residential school system.

Residential schools were boarding schools run by Canada's Department of Indian Affairs in conjunction with Christian churches, from about 1870 to 1996. Both Anglican and Catholic churches were culpable.

Attendance at residential schools was compulsory, and Indigenous children were forcibly removed from their homes by government agents. That made both the Government of Canada and the Church collaborators in one of the largest mass kidnappings in history.

The function of the schools was to 'erase the Indian' by forcing children into speaking English or French. Severe punishment was given to those who disobeyed and continued to speak their own language.

The residential schools also became known for unchecked and widespread physical and emotional abuse by clergy. St. Anne’s Indian Residential School even had its own electric chair, something the Canadian government was aware of and didn’t stop. This was only one of the horrors students were forced to endure. High rates of child mortality within the nationwide system went uninvestigated, with many of the dead buried in unmarked graves.

Within the last week, a Saskatchewan radio station broadcast an advertisement paid for by the Frontier Centre for Public Policy (FCPP), a Winnipeg-based organization. The ad, featuring Roger Currie, claims that the indignities perpetrated by residential schools are a myth. The terrible claims made by former students have been independently investigated and found to be true. The Church and the Government of Canada have both since apologised for their roles, with the latter having unilaterally paid financial recompense to those remaining survivors who were victimized by the system.

The generational ramifications of the Canadian Indian residential school system are still visible today; indigenous men and women are marginalised and discriminated against in what are becoming public spectacles. Despite promises made by our current Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, very little has been done by his government to find common ground with the Indigenous population. At times it seems as though the Government of Canada is still at odds with the Indians, as it was in the old days.

An engraving (only slightly fanciful) of the Ashtabula train disaster. This image was first published by Stephen Denison Peet in the 1877 book The Ashtabula Disaster.

The Ashtabula River railroad disaster (also known as the Ashtabula horror, the Ashtabula Bridge disaster, and the Ashtabula train disaster) was a derailment caused by the failure of a bridge over the Ashtabula River about 1,000 feet from the railroad station at Ashtabula, Ohio, in the United States on December 29, 1876.

At about 7:30 pm, two locomotives hauling 11 railcars of the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railway carrying 159 passengers plunged into the river in deep snow when the bridge gave way beneath them. The wooden cars were set alight by their heating stoves, but no attempt was made to extinguish the fire. The accident killed 92 people.

It was the worst rail accident in the U.S. in the 1800s, and remained the worst American railway disaster until the Great Train Wreck of 1918.

The coroner's report found that the bridge had been improperly designed. But because it had also been inadequately maintained and inspected, the bridge's designer was held not culpable.

In 1992 artist Nick Cave sat in a Chicago park, still reeling from news of the Rodney King beating and ensuing Los Angeles riots. Feeling Vulnerable and that he -- like any African American man -- could be targeted, he gathered Sticks from the ground. At the studio, he turned these sticks into his first Soundsuit, a wearable Sculpture and defensive shell. Often seen as a celebration of movement and material, Cave's Soundsuits mask the body, erasing identity. Now, more than twenty years later, Cave takes us inside the belly of one of his iconic sculptures with this immersive installation Until -- a play on the phrase "innocent until proven guilty" or, in this case, "guilty until proven innocent." Cave's work began as a protective response to violence, and, with Until, he tackles the recent deaths of African Americans in the United States -- Trayvon Martin, Eric Garner, Tamir Rice, Oscar Grant... the list goes on -- eulogizing these victims while providing a platform for civil discourse, debate, and, ultimately, hope.

Until began with a question Cave asked himself: Is there racism in heaven? Instead of providing a direct answer, Cave offers us an experience. Across this space, visitors traverse a sculptural forest of metallic lawn ornaments --punctuated by images of guns, bullets, and targets, positioning us all as culpable, vulnerable, and potentially under attack --before arriving at a crystal cloud topped by a garden of found ceramic birds, metal flowers, and black-face lawn jockeys. By removing the lawn jockeys (cast-iron figurines and racist remnants) from circulation, Cave transforms them into agents for change, placing beaded nets in their hands as dream catchers. Our journey through Until continues to a cliff wall constructed of millions of woven plastic beads, an immersive video, and a metaphoric cleansing in a Mylar waterfall.

Until is also a site for performances and community engagement, with the immersive installation becoming a stage for testimonials, music, dance, poetry, and discussion. In the end, Cave takes off the protective mask his Soundsuits. Once provided, offering an environment to discuss important issues in a space that is at Once Seductive, provocative, and -- ultimately -- optimistic.

Multiple manslaughter , culpable disaster , failure of safety standards and exploitation of illegal workers . These are the offenses for which the Prosecution of Prato has opened an investigation into the fire that caused the death of 7 Chinese workers.

Even CODACONS today presented a complaint to the Public Prosecutor's Office in which the association wants to establish the responsibility of the Mayor of Prato , and Inail of the Labour Inspectorate in relation to controls , audits, and compliance with safety standards . According to the commander of the municipal police Pasquinelli the company went up in flames was never checked - explains the association in the complaint - What happened in Prato

there are many who call it a massacre announced, and also confirm the statements by the security of the Municipality of Prato Aldo Milone : " We had long denounced the danger of this situation."

Codacons has therefore asked the public prosecutor to "verify whether the structure was in all respects in accordance with the law, and what activities have made Inail to ensure the safety of workers or if they were suitable to be contemplated negligence or omissions configure responsibility penalties for Inail and dependents of the labor inspectorate and the Mayor of Prato and all those individuals , bodies and authorities responsible for checks, verifications and compliance with the safety standards in terms of the offenses Refusal of official acts and Omission in addition to the offenses of failure to control and supervision , conspiracy to murder , conspiracy to multiple murder , murder with indirect intent , and on the basis of Article . 40 of the Penal Code , which states: " Do not prevent an event , which has a legal duty to prevent , is tantamount to causing it ." Already in 2010 CODACONS had denounced the risks associated with suppression Ispesl ( institution in charge of the controls in the workplace ) and its incorporation Inail , filing an appeal to the TAR of Lazio and reporting as the extent desired by the Minister Tremonti would have negative effects in terms of safety for the workers.

But that's not all . Today, the president of the Tuscany region , Enrico Rossi wrote on his Facebook page : "We can not allow that in Tuscany there are men and women reduced to a state of slavery . I shouted to our consciences dead bodies burned, those faces resigned and fearful of young Chinese workers , that child who fled running . We owe it to ourselves, to our dignity as individuals who , despite everything , they had - he concludes - the good fortune to be born and to live in this region. "

In spite of Supreme Court rulings in 2010 and 2012 accepting the argument that children, even those who are convicted of murder, are less culpable than adults and usually deserve a chance at redemption, there are more than 2,000 inmates serving life sentences without the possibility of parole who were sentenced when under the age of 18.

These drawings are of youth who were sentenced to life in prison without parole. Each drawing is based on a photo that was taken within one year of the time of their crime.

Today one friend (Pro-Ukraine) missed being shot by less than a meter. Another (Pro-Russia) was beaten by opposing protesters. And another (Pro-Ukraine) was lit on fire by a Molotov cocktail. ...And I *saw* that last one as it happened on a livestream. And what happened at Odessa's Trade Union Building today is an absolute travesty. If you aren't paying attention to what has been happening, is happening, and what is still to come: you should be.

What is going on in Ukraine is sickening, and worsened in that at the start of this year these same people were friends. You don't throw rocks or tear up cobblestones, toss Molotovs or fill the bottles, fire bullets or stand beside them & expect none of that is intended to kill. Those of both sides who contribute to the carnage are as culpable as those who perform it.

Behind every front line of thugs is a mindless mob, and behind every mindless mob -- to some glimmer of hope -- are the good people, ignored, who will pickup the fallen and clean the mess of both sides.

QUOTE: The seven eyes of Ningauble the Wizard floated back to his hood as he reported to Fafhrd: "I have seen much, yet cannot explain all. The Gray Mouser is exactly twenty-five feet below the deepest cellar in the palace of Gilpkerio Kistomerces. Even though twenty-four parts in twenty-five of him are dead, he is alive. "Now about Lankhmar. She's been invaded, her walls breached everywhere and desperate fighting is going on in the streets, by a fierce host which out-numbers Lankhmar's inhabitants by fifty to one and equipped with all modern weapons. Yet you can save the city." "How?" demanded Fafhrd. Ningauble shrugged. "You're a hero. You should know." Fritz Leiber, from "The Swords of Lankhmar"

Having travelled across the Atlantic for wartime work in the forests of Aberdeenshire Cecil White and Charles Short tragically died, not from enemy fire, not from a timber harvesting accident but from the folly of a fellow Canadian lumberjack. Ten forest men with driver James Francis Crockwell were travelling on the south Deeside road by Pannanich quarry when the lorry hit a high bank, swerved across the road and violently collided with a sand heap. Most of the passengers received minor injuries but Cecil White and Charles Short were so severely hurt that they died in hospital. James Francis Crockwell was charged with culpable homicide and driving whilst intoxicated. When the case came to trial in October 1941 JFC pled guilty to a lesser charge of driving in a culpable and reckless manner whilst drunk. He was sentenced to 15 months imprisonment.

The men were buried at Tullich kirkyard overlooking the site of the fatal accident at Pannanich.

Note nod to the men's homeland in the etching at the top of the stone.

QUOTE….“ It is the color of a bleached skull, his flesh; and the long hair, which flows below his shoulders, is milk-white. From the tapering, beautiful head stare two slanting eyes, crimson and moody, and from the loose sleeves of his yellow gown emerge two slender hands, also the color of bone”. Thus described by author Michael Moorcock in the first book, Elric of Melniboné

QUOTE….“ There is no such thing as luck. There is only adequate or inadequate preparation to cope with a statistical universe.” Robert Heinlein, Time Enough for Love

Art by Annette du Plessis

During September 2006, Mr Pakade gave a memorial lecture on Steve Biko at Red Location Museum to pupils from various schools.

A live broadcast on the 30 year commemoration of Steve Biko was screened from Red Location Museum on 12 September 2007.

BACKGROUND:

Steve Biko was born on 18 December 1946 in King Williams Town and died tragically in a Pretoria prison on 12 September 1977.

Steve Biko was a student leader and later founded the Black Consciousness Movement which would empower and mobilize much of the urban black population.

While living, his writings and activism attempted to empower black people, and he was famous for his slogan "black is beautiful", which he described as meaning: "man, you are okay as you are, begin to look upon yourself as a human being".

In 1972 Biko became honorary president of the Black People's Convention. He was banned during the height of apartheid in March 1973, meaning that he was not allowed to speak to more than one person at a time, was restricted to certain areas, and could not make speeches in public. It was also forbidden to quote anything he said, including speeches or simple conversations. Biko was a Xhosa. In addition to Xhosa, he spoke fluent English and fairly fluent Afrikaans.

When Biko was banned, his movement within the country was restricted to the Eastern Cape, where he was born. After returning there, he formed a number of grassroots organizations based on the notion of self-reliance, including a community clinic, Zanempilo, the Zimele Trust Fund (which helped support ex-political prisoners and their families), Njwaxa Leather-Works Project and the Ginsberg Education Fund.

In spite of the repression of the apartheid government, Biko and the BCM played a significant role in organising the protests which culminated in the Soweto Uprising of 16 June 1976. In the aftermath of the uprising, which was crushed by heavily-armed police shooting school children protesting, the authorities began to target Biko further.

On 18 August 1977, Biko was arrested at a police roadblock under the Terrorism Act No 83 of 1967. He suffered a major head injury while in police custody, and was chained to a window grille for a day.

On 11 September 1977 police loaded him in the back of a Land Rover, naked, and began the 1,500 km drive to Pretoria to take him to a prison with hospital facilities in order to treat the already near-dead Biko.

He died shortly after arrival at the Pretoria prison, on 12 September.

The police claimed his death was the result of an extended hunger strike. He was found to have massive injuries to the head, which many saw as strong evidence that he had been brutally clubbed by his captors. Then journalist and now political leader, Helen Zille, exposed the truth behind Biko's death.

Due to his fame, news of Biko's death spread quickly, opening many eyes around the world to the brutality of the apartheid regime. His funeral was attended by many hundreds of people, including numerous ambassadors and other diplomats from the United States and Western Europe.

The liberal white South African journalist Donald Woods, a personal friend of Biko, photographed his injuries in the morgue. Woods was later forced to flee South Africa for England, where he campaigned against apartheid and further publicised Biko's life and death, writing many newspaper articles and authoring the book, Biko.

On hearing the news of Steve Biko's death in police custody, Minister of Justice, Jimmy Kruger, simply declared in a speech that the incident "left him cold".

The following year on 2 February 1978, the Attorney General of the Eastern Cape stated that he would not prosecute any police involved in the arrest and detention of Biko. During the trial it was claimed that Biko's head injuries were a self-inflicted suicide attempt, and not the result of any beatings.

The judge ultimately ruled that a murder charge could not be supported partly because there were no witnesses to the killing. Charges of culpable homicide and assault were also considered, but because the killing occurred in 1977, the time limit for prosecution had expired.

The Truth and Reconciliation Commission, which was created following the end of minority rule and the apartheid system, reported in 1997 that five former members of the South African security forces had admitted to killing Biko who died a year after the Soweto riots which rocked apartheid South Africa, and were applying for amnesty.

On 7 October 2003 the South African Justice Ministry officials announced that the five policemen who were accused of killing Biko would not be prosecuted because of insufficient evidence and the fact that the time limit for prosecution had elapsed.

One of Steve Biko's close friends - Moki Cekisani - was the president of the Black People's Convention (BPC) in Port Elizabeth.

Moki was tortured in custody at the Security Branch headquarters in Port Elizabeth's Sanlam Building, the day after Biko's funeral in September 1977.

Cekisani told the TRC Commission that a bag soaked with water was placed over his head and that he was rammed against a wall and given electric shocks.

Cekisani named some of those involved in the assaults as Sergeant Nieuwoudt and others linked to Biko's death. Moki was admitted to hospital the same day, after a severe attack of epilepsy.

Red Location Museum salutes our fallen heroe and comrade - Steve Biko: May his teachings be revived and instill inspiration and dignity in our people...

QUOTE….“The study of history was oddly congenial to Joseph. There was a kind of poetry in it for him. He had always loved those flamboyant tales of far-off strife, the carefully preserved legends of the fabled kings and kingdoms of Old Earth. But they were just tales to him, gaudy legends, ingenious dramatic fictions. He did not seriously think that men like Agamemnon and Julius Caesar and Alexander the Great and Genghis Khan had ever existed”. Robert Silverberg from The Longest Way Home
