Fotografia: Andrea R. Lluch. Més informació: www.periferic.es

Today one friend (Pro-Ukraine) missed being shot by less than a meter. Another (Pro-Russia) was beaten by opposing protesters. And another (Pro-Ukraine) was lit on fire by a Molotov cocktail. ...And I *saw* that last one as it happened on a livestream. And what happened at Odessa's Trade Union Building today is an absolute travesty. If you aren't paying attention to what has been happening, is happening, and what is still to come: you should be.
What is going on in Ukraine is sickening, and worsened in that at the start of this year these same people were friends. You don't throw rocks or tear up cobblestones, toss Molotovs or fill the bottles, fire bullets or stand beside them & expect none of that is intended to kill. Those of both sides who contribute to the carnage are as culpable as those who perform it.
Behind every front line of thugs is a mindless mob, and behind every mindless mob -- to some glimmer of hope -- are the good people, ignored, who will pickup the fallen and clean the mess of both sides.
When considering car insurance for a fresh driver, make sure to look at building up his or her credit history, just before searching for insurance coverage. This will not merely aid in the newest vehicle driver getting a potential greater amount, and often will also support once the younger man or woman might require other huge purchases or lending options in the future.
One way to save cash on your auto insurance is to purchase your policy on the internet. Acquiring your coverage on the web incurs less charges for the insurer and many organizations will then move on those cost savings towards the consumer. Acquiring automobile insurance on the web can save you about 5-10 pct annually.
When looking to get a lesser rate on the auto insurance, don’t be scared to shop about. Car insurance firms use different formulas to compute that is a higher risk driver and for that reason having higher premiums. Also a slightly various pair of inquiries could imply large financial savings for you.
When you find yourself thinking about receiving auto insurance, you have to know and be aware of the coverage types. Even if you can be getting insurance for just one motor vehicle, there are several variables active in the final expense. Body damage culpability addresses authorized damage, dying and costs statements should you strike a person.
While you are working with automobile insurance you should always look for methods to lower your superior so that you can constantly get the best price. Plenty of insurance carriers will decrease your rate if you are somebody that pushes less the 7500 mls in a year. Try out using public transportation to be effective or even auto pooling whenever you can.
To economize on your own insurance, take into account what creating a declare will set you back just before revealing it. Wondering the company to produce a $600 restoration once you have a $500 deductible will undoubtedly net you $100 but could cause your monthly premiums to go up more than this, for the upcoming three years
To submit an insurance assert effectively, you should be aware your company’s policies. Contacting your broker as quickly as possible should always be your first step as this will set the devices into movements. Your agent is definitely the one particular coordinating the specifics for example arranging any appraisers to gauge damages and placed you on the path to getting the repairs produced.
If you wish to save cash on car insurance, you might want to take into account selecting through the better insurance deductibles which can be found from your company. It is going to reduce your premium substantially, however this means you will have much more out from wallet costs should you engage in a car crash.
If you are a senior citizen and you very own your car or truck but don’t generate quite definitely anymore, then you just might spend less on car insurance. Consider guaranteeing only the major driver of your own car. You can obtain a much lower rate if it individual carries a excellent driving record.
To find the most for your money when costs car insurance, be sure you look at the additional items which can be incorporated with some policies. You save on towing expenses with crisis roadside guidance which is integrated by some insurance companies. Other people may offer reduced prices for very good drivers or which include a couple of car on your plan.
For those who have a teen motorist about who may be only going back and forth to university, is usually to require whether your insurance coverage provides a discounted for lower miles, one, less well-known way to get more discount rates on vehicle insurance, particularly. You will shell out a lot less provided you can correctly quote the actual miles your teenage document and drives it correctly.
Your teenage driver’s insurance policy will cost you a lot more than your own for quite a while, however, if they got any formalized driving a car coaching, make sure to talk about it when shopping for an insurance quote or including these people to your insurance policy. Discounts are often accessible for driving instructions, but you may get even bigger savings should your teen required a defensive driving a vehicle class or another specific driving a car coaching training course.
An excellent stage it is possible to take is to obtain an older vehicle driver to discuss the insurance policy with you should you be a fresh driver looking to purchase an auto insurance policy but tend not to wish to pay out an arm plus a lower leg. Similar to possessing an individual with very good credit rating co-indicator a loan along, owning an older, knowledgeable vehicle driver on your insurance policy will bring your instalments downward.
Add more your partner to your insurance policies. Insurance firms are popular for needing dependable and accountable buyers. Introducing your partner in your insurance policy signifies which you have become a little more stable and reliable, and a lot of businesses will reduce your prices just consequently. That can help decrease your rates as well if your spouse carries a clear driving record.
In certain says you can actually submit evidence of fiscal accountability and abandon basically being forced to purchase an auto insurance policy. Should your condition happens to be among those, I’d propose thinking about it simply because it will save you on insurance costs on a monthly basis. The only real downside is that if a car accident does take place, and you also tend to be at wrong doing, you would be liable for problems.
Once you have a teenage motorist in your house, your insurance costs should go up. To save cash, invest in a less expensive and less dangerous car for the teenager to operate a vehicle. When they beg you for any fancier, sportier automobile, don’t give in. The less hazardous the automobile, the less costly the insurance plan.
You may not have the complete value again in the matter of a car accident when you change your car with upgraded things like spoilers or perhaps a new fender. Insurance coverages only look at the acceptable market value of your own vehicle and also the updates you manufactured typically usually do not get regarded as on the dollar for buck schedule.

Loud and lively anti-fur demonstration on the opening day of London Fashion Week 2017.
The organisers note that -
"Despite many big labels like Armani, Stella McCartney, Calvin Klein and Vivienne Westwood denouncing fur, London Fashion Week continues to provide the largest platform for fur in the UK - even though fur is illegal to produce in this country.
As high fashion drips down into high street fashion, the relentless promotion of fur by high brow designers is culpable in the normalisation of cheap high street fur items that have been brought back into shops and market stalls. London Fashion Week is currently responsible for the deaths of millions of innocent animals who are enslaved and tortured for their fur. This has to stop."

Genesis 3:2-5 (NLT)
2 “Of course we may eat fruit from the trees in the garden,” the woman replied. 3 “It’s only the fruit from the tree in the middle of the garden that we are not allowed to eat. God said, ‘You must not eat it or even touch it; if you do, you will die.’”
4 “You won’t die!” the serpent replied to the woman. 5 “God knows that your eyes will be opened as soon as you eat it, and you will be like God, knowing both good and evil.”
DRAWING NOTES:
TIME OF DAY:
Unspecified in the Bible narrative.
LIGHTING NOTES:
Simple, diffused lighting from above lights this scene.
CHARACTERS PRESENT:
Adam, Eve, serpent and a European hare!
RESEARCH/ADDITIONAL NOTES:
There are two versions of this scene:
01) (Previous page) Genesis 03 - The Fall of Man - Scene 02 - Serpent seduction (Purple version).
02) (This page) Genesis 03 - The Fall of Man - Scene 02 - Serpent seduction (Yellow version).
The only difference between these two versions is the colour of the snake.
This scene shows the serpent (see verse 1) talking to Eve. She is reaching up to the forbidden fruit and has just plucked a piece from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil (Genesis 2:17).
As various Bible commentaries point out, although in body it was a real snake, in fact the intelligence guiding it and giving it a voice was that of the Devil or Satan.
The enemy of all of us human beings did some of his most awful work right there in the garden of Eden. The outcome of that single conversation between Eve and the snake has brought all the evils and woes upon our world. The serpent questioned Eve regarding the goodness of God and then flatly denied the divine command by telling her “You won’t die!” In this way Satan insinuated a doubt as to Eve’s sense of the divine will and offering to lead her to the “true interpretation” of God’s command; how subtle a twist of the truth the Devil employs. I suppose that Eve’s reaction of trust and acceptance of a talking snake (surely not something she had encountered before!) could be interpreted as her receiving him as a heavenly messenger. It would have been much better for us all if she had been startled by the speaking serpent and gave it no attention at all. Alas, that was not to be.
I have drawn Adam behind Eve, because verse 6 confirms his presence: Then she gave some to her husband, who was with her,... many Bible commentators have blamed Eve for the first sin, but Adam was just as capable of saying “yes” or “no” to the fruit and therefore the temptation. He isn’t credited with saying anything, nor of protesting in any way, so I guess that makes Adam just as culpable as Eve.
I enjoyed colouring up the snake’s scales in both versions of this scene, even though he is the ultimate “baddie”!
I’ve included a European hare (also known as the brown hare) (Lepus europaeus), looking up at the snake, just for fun!
The fruit being picked is European pear or common pear (Pyrus communis).

Here many couples were married
in the days of runaway marriages,

Many famous names are associated

The Marriage Room now forms the

Gretna Green
Gretna Green is a village in the south of Scotland famous for runaway weddings.
It is in Dumfriesshire, near the mouth of the River Esk, and was historically the first village in Scotland, following the old coaching route from London to Edinburgh.
The Quintinshill Rail Disaster
The worst rail crash in British history (227 recorded deaths), occurred near Gretna Green.
It was a multi-train rail crash which occurred on the 22nd. May 1915 outside the Quintinshill signal box near Gretna Green.
Quintinshill box controlled two passing loops, one on each side of the double-track Caledonian Main Line linking Glasgow and Carlisle. At the time of the accident, both passing loops were occupied with goods trains, and a northbound local passenger train was standing on the southbound main line.
The first collision occurred when a southbound troop train travelling to Liverpool collided with the stationary local train.
A minute later the wreckage was struck by a northbound sleeping car express train travelling from London to Glasgow. Gas from the lighting system of the old wooden carriages of the troop train ignited, starting a fire which soon engulfed all five trains.
Such was the intensity of the fire that all the coal in the locomotive tenders was consumed. Gunfire added an eerie effect to the scene as small arms and rifle shells in the luggage vans began to explode in the intense heat.
Only half the soldiers on the troop train survived. Those killed were mainly Royal Scots soldiers heading for Gallipoli. The precise death toll was never established with confidence as some bodies were never recovered, having been wholly consumed by the fire, and the roll list of the regiment was also destroyed in the fire.
The last known survivor of the accident, Peter Stoddart, was interviewed by Michael Simkins in 1985. Simkins wrote in The Guardian in 2001:
I asked him about a story I had heard of an officer who went about the scene shooting men trapped in the burning wreckage. He replied:
"That was true. I saw that. He
was a Scottish gentleman.
But he had to".
There was a suspicion of a chuckle in his voice as he added:
"And there were one or two
other survivors who made
themselves scarce. They took
their opportunity".
The official death toll was 227 (215 soldiers, 9 passengers and three railway employees). Not counted in the 227 were four victims thought to be children, but whose remains were never claimed or identified. The soldiers were buried together in a mass grave in Edinburgh's Rosebank Cemetery, where an annual remembrance service is held.
An official inquiry, completed on the 17th. June 1915 for the Board of Trade, found the cause of the collision to be neglect of the rules by two signalmen. Both were charged with manslaughter in England, then convicted of culpable homicide after trial in Scotland. After they were released from a Scottish jail in 1916, they were re-employed by the railway company, although not as signalmen.

QUOTE….“The study of history was oddly congenial to Joseph. There was a kind of poetry in it for him. He had always loved those flamboyant tales of far-off strife, the carefully preserved legends of the fabled kings and kingdoms of Old Earth. But they were just tales to him, gaudy legends, ingenious dramatic fictions. He did not seriously think that men like Agamemnon and Julius Caesar and Alexander the Great and Genghis Khan had ever existed”. Robert Silverberg from The Longest Way Home

On 16 March 1801, she was lost in a shipwreck off the coast of Norfolk, England. She had been sailing from Yarmouth under the flag of Rear-Admiral Thomas Totty in an effort to reach the fleet of Admiral Sir Hyde Parker in the Sound preparing for the upcoming attack on the Danish fleet, with approximately 650 people on board. As the ship passed the Norfolk coast, she was caught in heavy wind and stuck on the Hammond Knoll Rock off Happisburgh, where she was pinned for some hours in the afternoon before breaking free but immediately being grounded on a sandbank, where the effect of wind and waves tore down the masts and began to break up the ship. She remained in that position for all of the following day, but late in the evening drifted off the sandbank and sank in deep water.[
The admiral and 195 sailors escaped the wreck, either in one of the ship's boats or were picked up by a passing collier and fishing boat, but over 400 of their shipmates drowned in the disaster, most of them once the ship began to sink in deeper water.
The compulsory court martial investigating the incident, held on Ruby in Sheerness, absolved the admiral and the captain (posthumously) of culpability in the disaster, posthumously blaming the harbour pilot and the ship's master, both of whom had been engaged to steer the ship through the reefs and shoals of the dangerous region, and should have known the location of Hammond Knoll, especially since it was daytime and in sight of land.
The remains of many of her crew were located by chance in a mass grave in Happisburgh churchyard during the digging of a new drainage channel.[ A memorial stone was erected in 1998 to their memory by the Ship's Company of the Royal Navy aircraft carrier HMS Invincible, and by the Happisburgh parochial church council.

QUOTE….“The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far. The sciences, each straining in its own direction, have hitherto harmed us little; but someday the piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality, and of our frightful position therin, that we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the deadly light into the peace and safety of a new dark age. ….” From The Call of Cthulhu by Howard Philip Lovecraft

In 1343 Sister Katrin, a nun at the convent of Kirkjubær in the south of Iceland was found guilty of having sold her soul to the devil and was punished by being burned at the stake. However, the annals from that period give differing accounts of the matter and her culpability appears to increase the further away from the scene of the event they were written.

QUOTE….“ It is the color of a bleached skull, his flesh; and the long hair, which flows below his shoulders, is milk-white. From the tapering, beautiful head stare two slanting eyes, crimson and moody, and from the loose sleeves of his yellow gown emerge two slender hands, also the color of bone”. Thus described by author Michael Moorcock in the first book, Elric of Melniboné

The Glen Cinema Disaster
So what else happened on the day that Olive posted the card to Will?
Not a lot, but exactly 28 days later, on Tuesday the 31st. December 1929, the Glen Cinema disaster occurred. It was caused by a smoking film canister at a cinema in Paisley, Scotland.
The resulting panic and crush killed 69 children and injured 40; the final death toll was 71. It is one of Scotland's worst-ever human disasters.
The Start of the Glen Cinema Fire
The Glen Cinema was opened in 1901. On the afternoon of the 31st. December 1929, during a children's matinee, a freshly shown film was put back in its metal can, in the spool room, where it began to issue thick black smoke.
Nitrate film, as was used at this time, can burn on its own without needing an air supply. When an assistant film operator spotted the smoke coming from the film container, he tried to smother the flammable film; but the container sprang open, and smoke and fumes entered the hall.
Soon, smoke filled the auditorium that contained about one thousand children. Panic set in. Children ran downstairs so fast and in such numbers that they piled up behind the escape door that led to Dyers Wynd.
The door could not be opened, as it was designed to open inwards and was padlocked. The following day, Paisley was stunned by the news that seventy children had died in the crush in the worst cinema disaster in British history.
The Inquiry Into the Glen Cinema Fire
An inquiry was held in Edinburgh on the 29th. April 1930, during which it was revealed that the cinema had been inspected and pronounced safe by the Paisley Fire Brigade on the morning of the fire.
The owner, James Graham, agreed that there were insufficient exits, but claimed he had repeatedly reminded the manager, Charles Dorward, that the escape exits were not to be shut during matinee performances.
The manager conceded that the exit gates had sometimes been locked to prevent children from entering the cinema without paying. A policeman who arrived on the scene just after the fire started reported that the gates were padlocked.
The conclusion of the inquiry was that the fire had been started by a short circuit when a metal box containing film stock had been placed on the top of a battery in the projection room. The tragedy had been made worse by the limited number of exits, insufficient attendants, and overcrowding.
The Glen Cinema Relief Fund
A relief fund for the injured children and bereaved parents raised £5,300. Paisley Town Council offered them a week's holiday at the seaside.
Eighty Years On
On the 31st. December 2009, to mark the eightieth anniversary of the tragedy, a memorial service was conducted by Philip Tartaglia, Bishop of Paisley and his associates at the Cenotaph.
Survivors congregated to remember the children who lost their lives on the 31st. December 1929. The wreaths were laid by one of the survivors, Emily Brown, who was five years old at the time of the incident. Since then, the memorial service has become an annual event.
Impact of the Glen Cinema Disaster
The cinema manager was put on trial for culpable homicide, but was found not guilty.
Safety regulations were tightened in the wake of the disaster; many municipal authorities made inspections of cinemas compulsory.
The Cinematograph Act of 1909 was amended to ensure that cinemas had more exits, that exit doors always opened outwards, and that they were fitted with push bars. A limitation was also placed on the seating capacity of cinemas.
Artefacts From the Glen Cinema
A small display at Paisley Museum exhibits some articles from the disaster, including a receipt for a funeral, a pair of shoes, and a hat. There are also letters sent to the Provost of Paisley from other civic leaders, in the UK, Europe and from the USA.
Some of the more poignant letters are from women who were unable to keep their own children, offering them to the devastated families of Paisley.
The Glen Cinema Building Today
The building that housed the Glen Cinema still stands, and currently houses a furniture store.

COMMENTS: As an admirer of fantasy art I am very fond of the artwork used on this book. The image “sold” me on the book, which is high credit indeed. Yet, I cannot find out who the artist is!
AND SO HE SAYS….“So I'll write it, and then I'll find out that I actually wrote something that is utterly useless. You can't use it in the story and it doesn't fit. So I just throw it away. I've done that countless times”. Jack Vance
