ARTIST STATEMENT:
These are part of an ongoing series of documentary images that memorialize the faces and lives of Latino elders in various community settings.
It's also a meditative reflection of my own aging process and awareness of normal and abnormal declines in memory. The nature of identity and the daily miracle of waking up in the morning re-remembering who I am.......
Memory is the basic stuff that anchors us to our being in time and space...... It's the link to where we've been. Unique to all other living things, it is the vessel for our existential awareness of what we're all moving toward.......our mortality. Our spiritual journey, our humanity.
With any luck and longevity, impending mortality can become an advisor that sits on our shoulder nudging us towards the better part of wisdom....or sometimes simply stirring us awake to the moment.
In “Tuesdays with Morrie” ( www.randomhouse.com/features/morrie/ ) there's a cute story about this.
A little wave bobbing along in the great ocean....having a grand old time.....notices that the waves in front were crashing against the shore. 'My God, this is terrible', the wave says. Look what's going to happen to me! Another wave comes along and says: 'Why do you look so sad? The first wave says: 'you don't understand, we're all going to crash!.....All of us waves are going to be nothing! Isn't this terrible?' The second wave says: 'No, you don't understand....... You're not a wave, you're part of the ocean.'.......
This project is about the experience of feeling like a tiny evanescent “wave” in the ocean of humanity. It is a celebration of life in the face of the inevitable losses encountered in our human journey. More to the point, it is a tribute to my Puerto Rican family and the memory of my parents, Genara Santiago Otaño and Juan Martinez Rodriguez
Beyond this, my friend Don Alfonso Rodriguez has been my muse and pivotal wake-up call to do this project. I thank and acknowledge him and all our elder friends and neighbors from the greater Latin American community and beyond. Most importantly, this work acknowledges the children, spouses, professional caretakers and service agencies (i.e., The Lincoln Square Neighborhood Center, NORC program) that make it possible for our elders to continue living in their own homes. To say the very least, our elders deserve to live and die with dignity.
The saddest part of all of this is the dearth of resources available to make this happen. The poverty rate in 2002 among US Hispanic elderly (65 and older) was 21.4 percent. Compared to other elderly in the US population), they are twice as likely to be living within the poverty levels. ( USDHHS www.aoa.gov/prof/Statistics/minority_aging/Facts-on-Hispa... )
Even sadder still, it's actually worse than reported when one thinks about it. This is because the operational definitions of poverty statistics are politically driven and often under-report actual poverty levels on the ground. Whatever the methodological or other reasons may be, they serve to lessen the culpability and shame of the established political and social order for this growing crisis. No surprise there, .....another “white elephant” hidden in plain sight, eh?
In so many ways, known and unknown, our elders are extraordinary, unsung heros, leaders, workers among workers, dreamers, mentors, nurturers....”Pioneros.... Yes, our collective cultural memory. I am living out many of their dreams. I am co-creating new ones into the future......right now.
All those who've been reading my comments and text, you will notice that the overall narrative is developing in response to your: “favoriting”, “views”, comments, conversations and interactions with me about this project. You are all an interctive parts of this creation.......thank you!!!
This long-term documentary project continues grow for yet another year..... Any ideas for project funding proposals.......promoting an exhibition, book or ";show-and-tell"..???... Let me know :~)

Apparently in Italy and most of Europe, Star Visitor awareness is much more prevalent. Even AREA 51 and UFO are sold on the newstands alongside People and US Weekly!
The above image is a Star Visitor who looks much like we do only he is a little bit taller-around 8½ ft.
She also reports that they have had underwater bases off Genoa for a long time. The book describing their race, bases and knowledge is only in Italian today. "Contattismi Di Massa"

[SITE/BLOG IS GONE 1/23/2008]
In these days the Italian UFO community is under shock after the recent publication of a new, extraordinary book by Edizioni Nexus.
Its title is "Contattismi di Massa" ("Mass Contacts") and was written by Professor Stefano Breccia, a famous and esteemed engineer from Abruzzi. His impressive curriculum shows us a long academic career in L'Aquila's and many other Italian and foreign Universities. He is also a founding member of the Italian Ufological Centre (CUN).
The author recalls and investigates many cases in which contacts with aliens did not occur to single, isolated individuals but, on the contrary, involved entire groups of people, more or less organized in communities, who lived together the same experiences. Some of these groups decided to reveal what was happening, some others preferred to keep everything secret.
This completely new and intriguing scenery will open to researchers the possibility, for the first time in Ufology, to investigate on crossed sources of information, to trace the many witnesses involved, verifying their reciprocal links, and to study facts, times and places from many and different points of view at the same time.
The book re-opens and deepens, with new and never published details, the famous case of "UMMO". This was the name of a race of self-defining extraterrestrials who sent for decades an incredible amount of letters to famous scientists and researchers living in Spain, France, Italy etc. These letters were filled with extremely complicated notions denoting very advanced scientific knowledge. Many of the scientists who had received them later admitted they had been inspired by those letters, owing to that superior science many of their inventions and discoveries.
The book also shows a completely unknown corollary of the "UMMO case" involving central Italy and, more specifically, the town of Rome and the archaeological Etruscan ruins of Veio.
During the seventies in those places acted, completely undisturbed, many extraterrestrials calling themselves "Italic Ummites". They looked like humans and for this reason could perfectly hide and integrate in our society. These beings, who possessed a technology well far beyond ours, produced many phenomena for us indistinguishable from magic and used their abilities to direct and manipulate a group of young UFO enthusiasts.
But the real "bomb" contained in "Mass Contacts" blasts when we read the third chapter: The Story of "FRIENDSHIP".
In this chapter we assist to the fall of a secrecy that had enveloped for decades a case cited very sporadically and suspiciously only by few investigators (the best informed ones). They had some evidences suggesting that in Italy, from 1956 to 1978, something TREMENDOUS had happened, but all their efforts to discover the truth had failed. The fact was that the group involved in the case had decided to keep everything secret; many of them were famous and influent people and could not ruin their lives and careers saying they had met face to face with extraterrestrial people. They knew the world was not ready yet.
Now at last, Professor Stefano Breccia (a member of "Friendship" himself, as we can easily infer), providing many impressive documents and testimonies, disclosures the truth on the entire story to give homage and justice to the memory of his big friend, the late Dr. Bruno Sammaciccia, pivot figure in the "Friendship" group, and gives him the word publishing a long taped interview to his friend.
Professor Bruno Sammaciccia was a well known Psychologist and Theologian from Pescara. He wrote many volumes on religious subjects including the study of miracles, holy relics, the Order of San Francis of Assisi and the history of compared Religions. His works have been translated in many languages and are well represented in all main religious libraries all over the world. He received the UNESCO prize "Man of the Year" in 1982, was friend of many important people and high prelates and the same Pope Karol Woytila, at the time Cardinal of Cracow, wrote a friendly dedication on one of his books.
His public and irreprehensible image hid a fantastic and science fiction-like reality:
from 1956 to 1978 Bruno Sammaciccia and many other people had continuative and intense contacts with extraterrestrial entities coming from planets orbiting around many different stars, many light years distant from our Solar Sistem, forming part of a Galactic Federation.
Just like Enoch Wallace, the leading character of Clifford Simak's "Way Station", Bruno Sammaciccia found himself in the middle of an incredible passage of aliens on this planet Earth. They had many underground bases, the biggest one was under the Adriatic Sea and was long more than one hundred kilometers. Bruno Sammaciccia's duties ranged from buying and transporting goods to the underground bases, to organizing a selected group of terrestrials capable to understand the alien knowledge and to spread it more and more to humanity.
The whole operation had to remain secret. The total number of the lucky earthlings admitted to such a fantastic group is esteemed from Professor Breccia in no more than 200 people, including similar groups in Austria, Germany and Russia. They spontaneously called themselves "Friendship", "Freundshaft", "Amitiè" and, of course, "Amicizia", because the wonderful "human" warmness of the space visitors had suggested in everyone the same feeling.
Bruno Sammaciccia gave to his "Friends" the code-name of "W56" ("W" from the sign of victory and "56" from the year of the first contact). He describes them as human in the shape but very different in tallness, ranging from one meter to three meters and a half...in one occasion he and other people near Pescara saw from a distance some giants six meters tall!
The aliens "normally" tall showed to be perfectly fit in our society and had a knowledge of our world and our history much deeper than ours. They had technologies like teleportation or interstellar travel but enjoyed themselves driving our cars or piloting our planes. They loved our foods and they loved smoking too! They knew that exceeding in some habits can be dangerous and used to take regularly some antidotes. Anyway the different atmosphere and gravity of their re-created environment could completely decontaminate bodies from toxic substances; this healing effect was experimented also from Sammaciccia and his human friends who had access to underground bases.
The "W56" aliens said they wanted to help humans to survive because, especially during the last decades, human civilization had chosen very dangerous paths, blindly trusting in science and forgetting morals. They said that the other civilizations, in space and on earth, who had made the same errors had invariably perished. They could not interfere at a mass level with us because our culture would have been destroyed, but they could gently address with their teaching a little number of selected terrestrials to a better future, and their messages had to be spread in this way to more and more people, generation after generation.
Unfortunately the "W56" were fiercely struggled by a hostile race they called "our enemy brothers" and for this reason also our unaware human race was involved in some kind of "Star War". Sammaciccia re-named these enemies "CTR" (from "contraries" and one of the duties of the "Friendship" group consisted in helping W56's efforts to stop CTR's evil actions. The CTR are described like totally similar to us and this characteristic made them extremely dangerous, they were perfectly fit in our society, hyper technological and totally lacking in morals.
After almost thirty years of these fantastic interactions the history of "Friendship" came to a tragic end. The W56 were defeated, the CTR destroyed the enormous bases where also humans had gone many times and the Adriatic sea erupted with many water columns, causing death and fear among fishermen in 1978. Sammaciccia states that humans too were culpable for this horrible end, because they had not trusted each other and they had not supported enough their alien "Friends".
Anyway W 56 promised they would come back at the beginning of the new century and Bruno Sammaciccia ends his long interview to Stefano Breccia hoping to see them again.
Sadly the theologian died in 2003 not realizing his wishes, at least in this world.
Now we have his extremely touching words and we have the duty to study the enormous amount of verifiable and concrete facts contained in Stefano Breccia's volume.
Talking about "facts": at the end of this book we can see a very clear photo of a W56. The person is in full light and all his body and face characteristics are perfectly detailed. For the first time in Ufology the image of a so-called "alien" is so clear, so "Human" (how tall is he?) and with no trace of photographic effects to make it more "exotic". Now researchers and debunkers will obviously try to verify the photo confronting that face with all similar faces they'll be able to discover and, in case, they will probably open also the police archives! That face is too recognizable; what happened if somebody would identify that guy saying:" HEY, I know him, he is my cousin!(or my brother, friend, husband etc etc etc...)"? the whole story would fall, of course.
So, why Dr.Breccia exposed his name and his career to such a great risk? Perhaps because he is totally certain that the person portrayed in that photo was not from this Earth.
If the "Frienship" story is true it represents one of the most important cases in Ufology and an immense heritage for humanity.

Today one friend (Pro-Ukraine) missed being shot by less than a meter. Another (Pro-Russia) was beaten by opposing protesters. And another (Pro-Ukraine) was lit on fire by a Molotov cocktail. ...And I *saw* that last one as it happened on a livestream. And what happened at Odessa's Trade Union Building today is an absolute travesty. If you aren't paying attention to what has been happening, is happening, and what is still to come: you should be.
What is going on in Ukraine is sickening, and worsened in that at the start of this year these same people were friends. You don't throw rocks or tear up cobblestones, toss Molotovs or fill the bottles, fire bullets or stand beside them & expect none of that is intended to kill. Those of both sides who contribute to the carnage are as culpable as those who perform it.
Behind every front line of thugs is a mindless mob, and behind every mindless mob -- to some glimmer of hope -- are the good people, ignored, who will pickup the fallen and clean the mess of both sides.

Mural depicting Rachel Corrie, on a wall in San Francisco, California's Mission District. Rachel Aliene Corrie (April 10, 1979 – March 16, 2003) from Olympia, Washington, was an American peace activist and diarist. She was a member of the pro-Palestinian group called the International Solidarity Movement (ISM). She was killed by an Israel Defense Forces (IDF) armored bulldozer in a combat zone in Rafah, in the southern part of the Gaza Strip, under contested circumstances during the height of the second Palestinian intifada. She had come to Gaza as part of her senior-year college assignment to connect her home town with Rafah in a sister cities project. While there, she had engaged with other ISM activists in efforts to prevent the Israeli army's demolition of the homes of Palestinian people in their operations to eliminate tunnels used by terrorists to smuggle weapons from Egypt into Gaza. Less than two months after her arrival, on March 16, 2003, Corrie was killed during an Israeli military operation after a three-hour confrontation between Israeli soldiers operating two bulldozers and eight ISM activists. The exact nature of her death and the culpability of the bulldozer operator are disputed, with fellow ISM protestors saying that the Israeli soldier operating the bulldozer deliberately ran over Corrie, and Israeli eyewitnesses saying that it was an accident since the bulldozer operator could not see her. In 2005 Corrie's parents filed a civil lawsuit against the state of Israel. The lawsuit charged Israel with not conducting a full and credible investigation into the case and with responsibility for her death, contending that she had either been intentionally killed or that the soldiers had acted with reckless neglect. They sued for a symbolic one U.S. dollar in damages. In August 2012, an Israeli court rejected their suit and upheld the results of Israel's 2003 military investigation, ruling that the Israeli government was not responsible for Corrie's death. The ruling was met with some criticism. An appeal against the August 2012 ruling was heard on May 21, 2014. The decision has not yet been announced.

QUOTE….“The study of history was oddly congenial to Joseph. There was a kind of poetry in it for him. He had always loved those flamboyant tales of far-off strife, the carefully preserved legends of the fabled kings and kingdoms of Old Earth. But they were just tales to him, gaudy legends, ingenious dramatic fictions. He did not seriously think that men like Agamemnon and Julius Caesar and Alexander the Great and Genghis Khan had ever existed”. Robert Silverberg from The Longest Way Home

A route number fashioned out of ticket roll substitutes for failed destination equipment on this Leicester allocated Wright bodied Volvo B7RLE. The vehicle has had defective destination display equipment for a number of days.
A destination display is one of the most important, and yet basic, ways in which a bus operator advertises its services to passengers or customers. The fact that the home made route number is in the swept area of the wipers creates culpability issues for both the driver and the company.
Should VOSA carry out bus service reliability and compliance monitoring, the journeys that this bus is operating will be recorded as "not having been seen", basically the same as not having run. This can lead to financial penalties being imposed on the operator.

QUOTE….“ There is no such thing as luck. There is only adequate or inadequate preparation to cope with a statistical universe.” Robert Heinlein, Time Enough for Love
In 1992 artist Nick Cave sat in a Chicago park, still reeling from news of the Rodney King beating and ensuing Los Angeles riots. Feeling Vulnerable and that he -- like any African American man -- could be targeted, he gathered Sticks from the ground. At the studio, he turned these sticks into his first Soundsuit, a wearable Sculpture and defensive shell. Often seen as a celebration of movement and material, Cave's Soundsuits mask the body, erasing identity. Now, more than twenty years later, Cave takes us inside the belly of one of his iconic sculptures with this immersive installation Until -- a play on the phrase "innocent until proven guilty" or, in this case, "guilty until proven innocent." Cave's work began as a protective response to violence, and, with Until, he tackles the recent deaths of African Americans in the United States -- Trayvon Martin, Eric Garner, Tamir Rice, Oscar Grant... the list goes on -- eulogizing these victims while providing a platform for civil discourse, debate, and, ultimately, hope.
Until began with a question Cave asked himself: Is there racism in heaven? Instead of providing a direct answer, Cave offers us an experience. Across this space, visitors traverse a sculptural forest of metallic lawn ornaments --punctuated by images of guns, bullets, and targets, positioning us all as culpable, vulnerable, and potentially under attack --before arriving at a crystal cloud topped by a garden of found ceramic birds, metal flowers, and black-face lawn jockeys. By removing the lawn jockeys (cast-iron figurines and racist remnants) from circulation, Cave transforms them into agents for change, placing beaded nets in their hands as dream catchers. Our journey through Until continues to a cliff wall constructed of millions of woven plastic beads, an immersive video, and a metaphoric cleansing in a Mylar waterfall.
Until is also a site for performances and community engagement, with the immersive installation becoming a stage for testimonials, music, dance, poetry, and discussion. In the end, Cave takes off the protective mask his Soundsuits. Once provided, offering an environment to discuss important issues in a space that is at Once Seductive, provocative, and -- ultimately -- optimistic.

Tower of Glass - Robert Silverberg (novel - science fiction - 2023-05-08 - review #0963)
My edition of Silverberg's 1970 novel "Tower of Glass" is a 184-page paperback. In that modest space the author adroitly weaves several gripping story lines around the person of Simeon Krug genius and maniac: he has a compulsive desire to contact aliens' beings from another solar system; staggeringly wealthy resulting from his lab grown robotic men and women who secretly worship their creator Krug and his epic conflict with his pleasure-seeking son.
Simeon Krug is obsessed with building a 1-kilometer radio beacon in Antarctica to broadcaster a response to a repeatable radio signal received from a planetary nebula. In parallel he is manufacturing a space craft where men can travel, in suspended animation, to the source of the undecipherable signal. The robotic foremen of his "Tower of Glass" is involved in a secretive religious cult centered on Krug. If this sounds like a batty SF pot-boiler, I would respectively suggest you reconsider. I found this novel completely realistic in it narrative ideas and a case study in obsession by a wealthy, deranged man. One of the better SF novels I have ever read by one of the most consistently talented writer in the field.

If the lion’s cage were to be left open and your mother, wife, son, husband were to be mauled, whose fault would it be? The lion’s or the one who let it go free?
Franco Hadzovic has killed a woman, Piera Calanna, at Giugliano while she was trying to prevent the theft of a car. He dragged her along while going backwards for 20 metres.
Franco is the living proof of the madness of the system, of the excess of good intentions at everyone’s expense. Franco is a nomad, but he has been living in Italy for a good 13 years.
Franco has been arrested 6 times. Always released.
Franco had received numerous expulsion notices. Always ignored.
Whose is the responsibility for the death of signora Piera as relates to her family? What would you say?
If you’ve said Franco, you have confused the cause with the effect.
Franco is the effect of the lack of justice. The cause is our dear parties in government and in the opposition. The ones that have occupied Parliament and the institutions.
Destroyed the justice system. People who ignore reality. They live it with annoyance. In 2007, at least a further 60,000 Rumanian Roma are arriving. Two and a half million could be leaving in the future.
Italy is the ideal place. A nomad commits crime and becomes stationary. In Italy there are 100 regular nomad camps and 500 irregular ones.
Franco will end up in jail, like the Roma who killed 4 young people while driving on the wrong side of the road while drunk, like the Romanian young woman who inserted an umbrella in the eye socket of a metro passenger, like many others.
But our parliamentarians are always free. They debate, discuss, make laws on the backs of the country and they never go to prison for culpable homicide. Giugliano’s family should take a case against Mastella, the minister of Justice. We need to start with someone.

A veces puedo portarme realmente mal,
y no respetar las normas que me dan,
y no respetar a nadie de verdad.
A veces puedo ser el rey de los irresponsables,
de absolutamente nada preocuparme,
solo buscar mi felicidad.
Pero mas temprano que tarde,
voy a sentirme culpable,
pero mas temprano que tarde,
voy a sentirme culpable.
Fotografia: Andrea R. Lluch. Més informació: www.periferic.es
