A storm brewing up seemingly created by those windturbines - but in the end they are nothing but toys compared to the awesome forces of nature.

Created in 1846, Grayson County was named after Peter Grayson, poet, diplomat and Attorney General of the Republic of Texas. Grayson helped free Stephen F. Austin from imprisonment in Mexico City and worked to gain recognition and annexation for Texas after the revolution. He agreed to run as Sam Houston's candidate for president of the Republic in 1838. On a trip to Washington a life long battle with mental illness ended when he shot himself in Bean's Station, Tennessee. Some believe it was because of grief he suffered after a marriage proposal had been declined.

Gryason County's seat, Sherman, was named after Sidney Sherman, a pivotal figure in the Texas Revolution. Sherman and his Kentucky volunteers joined Sam Houston's army in Gonzales and followed him to San Jacinto. It is his men that is credited with the famous battle cry, “Remember the Alamo! Remember Goliad!”. The “Sherman Flag” which depicts Lady Liberty holding a sword with the words “Liberty or Death” is the most common banner associated with the Battle of San Jacinto and was carried into battle by Sherman's men. Today it hangs in a glass case behind the Speaker's podium in the House of Representatives in Austin. Sherman later lived in Harris County and started the Buffalo Bayou, Brazos and Colorado Railway Company which was responsible for construction of Texas' first rail line.

The current Grayson County courthouse was constructed in 1936 and the first Confederate monument in Texas stands nearby, dedicated in 1896. The previous building, built in 1876, was burned to the ground during the Sherman Riot of 1930. A black farm hand named George Hughes had admitted to the rape of a young white woman and was brought to trial in Sherman on May 9. An angry mob had assembled outside and when the alleged victim was brought to the courthouse in an ambulance the crowd erupted. The mob entered the building demanding Hughes be given to them. Hughes was put in an upstairs vault for his protection, but, when the building erupted into flames, Texas Rangers were cut off from rescuing him. Outside the angry mob cut hoses as firefighters attempted to control the flames. Meanwhile Governor Dan Moody sent in the National Guard to control the crowd, but that only intensified their violence. Once the vault had cooled enough to open, the body of George Hughes was retrieved, drug through town tied to the back of a truck and hung in the black area of Sherman. The tree, the body and nine buildings in the area were burned.

The good doctors at Pataphysical Studios took a break from their madcap adventures to create hundreds of ‘Pataphysical Talismans -- to thank all the folks who worked on the ‘Pataphysical Slot Machine or contribute to our creative network.

These talismans are in the shape of a question mark, and inspired by the Nepali number "1", which represents the unity of all things. This symbol appears below the Buddha’s all-seeing eyes in stupa temples throughout Nepal.

The Pataphysical Talismans can be worn as a necklace or broach, used as ornaments for your home -- or your art. This design was created by Freddy Hahne (a.k.. Dr. Really) and manufactured by Fabrice Florin (a.k.a. Dr. Fabio), using Tam High School's laser printer and wood contributed by Howard Rheingold (a.k.a. Dr. Rindbrain). For our first run, we printed out 300 of these talismans on 1/8” maple plywood.

We then gathered at Pataphysical Studios to art up the talismans on a late fall afternoon. We painted them and decorated them with jewels, from Dr. Canard’s vast collection of ornaments. Each time we completed a talisman, we hit a gong and claimed ‘By the power of the duck!’, to infuse them with special energy for the people we will give them to.

It was a great way to relax and make art together, on our first day back after an intense month-long exhibit at the Mill Valley Library in October.

Visitors to this unique art installation seemed to really enjoy the experience, and we received great feedback about the fun and educational events we hosted along with the exhibit. Learn more: pataphysics.us/join-the-unveiling-of-the-slot-machine

Mingle Media TV and the Red Carpet Report team were invited to come out to Marc Friedland Couture Communications offices to see how this iconic envelope is made in Marc’s studio. Red Carpet Report host, Tamara Krinsky also spoke with Marc at the Governors Ball preview earlier this week and have included our coverage with this post. At the “Making Of” the envelope at Marc’s studio we were treated to delicious bites and bubbly including wine from Sterling Vineyards and cocktails from Diageo.

At the “Making of” Event we learned that the custom-designed envelope is handcrafted from a high gloss, iridescent metallic

paper, which is then treated in “Oscar” gold and complemented by a red-lacquered lining featuring the Oscar

statuette hand-stamped in satin gold leaf. The exterior of “The Envelope” features an Art Deco-inspired satin gold foil-treated frame with an ecru inset panel bearing the name of the award category which is written in a rich charcoal ink.

Precautions are taken for security so they can’t be duplicated by adding a faint statuette watermarked pattern on the

exterior envelope which also gives “The Envelope” its distinctive look.

Inside “The Envelope” is a heavyweight ecru card with iridescent gold accents and a gold leaf-embossed Oscar statuette with the infamous phrase imprinted "And the Oscar goes to…"

Friedland doesn’t miss any detail as the names of the winners are printed using the same charcoal ink which are then mounted onto a matching, red-lacquered hand-wrapped frame. On the back of the card? You guessed it, it will have the award category imprinted as well.

Hey - wait a minute, doesn’t that mean that Marc and his team know who the winners are?

Good question, no, Friedman’s team create an announcement card with every nominee, in every category for that year’s Oscars. After the voting is closed, PricewaterhouseCoopers(PwC) partners Brian Cullinan and

Rick Rosas personally insert the winner's announcement cards then fasten the envelope with a red double-faced satin ribbon and red-lacquered and gold-embossed seal featuring the PwC logo. Making the envelope official. Once that’s completed, the other cards with the nominees who were not selected as winners are destroyed.

Factoid: Marc began creating this specially designed envelope and winners cards for the Oscars in 2011

By Stephen Waterhouse – Illustrator and Author.

Welcome to my first solo exhibition which shows some of my favourite artwork from the last 15 years.

When I was a boy I loved to draw and paint fun characters and landscapes and I still do now at 36 years old. At 6 years old I was inspired by Roald Dahl’s books and when I was 12 years old I saw Monet’s drawings, Van Gogh’s paintings and the Simpsons for the first time. That seems like an odd mix but they really inspired me to draw and paint even more. So much so, I painted the whole Simpsons family onto my younger sisters bedroom wall. Luckily she thought they were great!

After leaving school I went to Huddersfield College to do an Art and Design Foundation course for one year. From there I went on to Loughborough University to study Illustration for three years to learn to draw and paint properly, in my own way. Since graduating in 1998 I‘ve been lucky enough to be commissioned to create children’s books, posters, jigsaws and greetings cards.I also visit schools to talk about my work and to do character invention workshops, as well as teaching part-time at Loughborough University.

My latest work is for a book called ‘My Pop-Up World Atlas’. It’s funny because as I failed Geography at ‘A’ Level and this gave me a chance to learn about every continent and country in a very fun and colourful way!

The 35 pieces of artwork here show part of my journey over the last 15 years from 1996 as a student to my latest artwork for a book which came out this summer. This exhibition also shows my transition from painting with acrylics to working digitally on a computer. ‘London at Christmas Time’ (2002) was my very first digital Christmas card and after some experimentation my artwork has mostly all been painted digitally since then. I do however create all my rough drawings the old fashioned way, with a pencil! Some of which I have included here to show my process of development.

Thank you for coming to take a look around, I hope you enjoy the show!

Best Wishes

Stephen

Kansas students create art for Dream Rocket Project

The Associated Press

Art created by Kansas students will be among those wrapped around a 365-foot replica of the Saturn V rocket at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, Ala.

A visiting assistant professor at Washburn University helped elementary students from Rossville and St. Mary create 550 pieces of artwork for the Dream Rocket Project.

A news release from the Topeka university says the Saturn V rocket will be wrapped with more than 8,000 pieces of art in 2014.

Beforehand, all submissions are being displayed in venues such as libraries, schools and museums. A show is planned at the Wamego Public Library in April.

I came across a film making on King Street and Bay Street in Toronto.

Toronto is often referred to as Hollywood North, and is frequently used by movie crews to create scenes as New York City, Chicago or Boston.

The police offiers are real Toronto constables directing or diverting traffic. The steam behind them is from a machine to create a fake winter feel. The Bew York city yellow cab and the people over the other side of the taxicab are all background actors or extras for the film shooting.

Create a photo that uses Focus (Depth of Field) as your main design element.

There will be more photos from this photoshoot coming later so stay tuned!

The Creating Balance exhibition opened today at Pitfield Pop-Up in Winchester.

The project has been over a year in the making and is the celebration of a collaboration between Anglepoise, The University of Portsmouth and Strong Island a community group from Portsmouth.

The strength and breadth of talent in Portsmouth has been showcased at the exhibition.

During the last year 10 artists and designers were twinned with 10 photographers and each given an Anglepoise lamp.

Final outcomes are on display along with 10 videos all made by students Massimo Mazullo and Jonas Jakunas on the BSc TV & Broadcasting course at The University of Portsmouth.

We launched the exhibition as part of The London Design Festival back in September and were also picked to be part of the Icon Design Trail and speak at the V&A gallery in London.

Everyone involved in the project has been overwhelmed by the support and reaction to the exhibition so far. Some lamps have been customised - artist My Dog Sighs used his lamp as a palette, design studio I Love Dust illustrated theirs, Paul Gonella and Tristan Savage submerged a lamp in the solent for 4 months and Russell Squires turned his lamp into an Anglebot.

Pitfield, Winchester is the perfect place to exhibit due to their incredible curation of the space. Pitfield Pop-Up by Pitfield of London (owned by Sean Clarkson an interior designer who appears on Channel 4;s Four Rooms) is a mixture of shop, cafe and gallery.

You can view the exhibition until 7th December, open Monday to Saturday 7.30am - 5.30pm and Sunday 10am - 4pm. Pitfield Pop-Up Winchester is located in the centre of the city right by the cathedral at The Brooks, Winchester. It will then open at aspex gallery, Portsmouth on 10th January 2014 until 16th February.

Feel free to grab a copy of the brochure and postcard pack when you visit.

Hello everyone! For this Thanksgiving tutorial (if you’re in the USA), I present you with the coffee based drink menu for The Roasterie, a cozy coffee shop located in Piccadilly Circus purveying bold flavors and carefully selected pastries to its patrons.

We’ll use some of the twenty font families included in the font geek’s go-to bundle to accomplish that. We’ll explore basic visual identity building, and how to use the many symbol/dingbats typefaces included in the collection to our advantage for layout building, and more!

So, pour yourself a warm cup of Arabica, and let’s do this.
