We are creating an Art Float for Social Change at Tam Makers, to inspire more people to participate in democracy.
Our parade float features Mother Earth and a circle of hands, pulled by the colorful dragon Quetzy. Young activists will sing and speak about social change -- and artists will share their ideas on our spinning carousel. They want you all to vote, speak up and create a better world!
This community art project was created by over a hundred volunteers at Tam Makers, led by Fabrice Florin and Geo Monley, with the generous support of Good Earth, Mill Valley Community Action Network and Tamalpais High School.
The Art Float for Social Change will reach out to youth and people of color through art, music and technology. We will present this art show on Earth Day, Memorial Day and Fourth of July parades in Marin -- and throughout California this fall, to encourage people to vote in the next elections.

So the other day, I showed where to find the App Store located on Macs. Well, today, I want to show how it's possible to create a self contained app, which actually shows up in your Dock using the iPhone App Store logo and everything, as you can see in the pic above.
The first thing you need to do is download Fluid:
Fluid is a cool free app that allows you to make apps out of web pages. You'll also need the iPhone App Store icon. Joshia Della at DeviantArt has one here:

Okay, now that you have downloaded all the necessary components, open up Fluid and you should see the same dialog as above. First, paste in the url of Apple's download page. In this case it is:
http://www.apple.com/downloads/
Paste that in to the "URL" dialog. Next, you're going to fill in the "Name" dialog with "App Store" or "Mac App Store" or whatever name you want to give to this app.
Leave the "Location" dialog at its default of "Applications." Okay, in the "Icon" dialog, navigate to the PNG folder located inside the icon folder provided by Joshia Della and click on the "Applications" icon or whatever icon you prefer.
Now click "Create" and Fluid will ask you if you want to "Launch Now." Go ahead and click it because there's one more thing you need to do to make sure this is a self-contained app.
Go to the Preferences menu in your newly created app and go to the "Advanced" dialog. Inside, you will click on "Allow Browsing to Any Url." This option allows you to open up any link in the App itself. Otherwise, whenever you hit a link, it will automatically open up Safari or Firefox or whichever your default web browser might be.
That's all. Enjoy your new Mac App Store.
ProTip: When choosing icons for Fluid always use PNG files instead of JPEG. PNG files allow Alpha Channels, which is a big deal when part of the icon needs to be transparent. JPEGs don't allow this.

Hello Design Cutters! It’s Simon here for tutorial number 2 of Design Cuts’ 2nd birthday multi-deal fest. This time, we’ll create a cute, watercolor-themed birthday card, dedicated to our favorite team of design geeks!
We’ll use techniques including texture layering, masking, layer styles, and more! Quick word of caution: we’ll be layering a lot of elements, so this tutorial may take a bit longer than usual. But it will be just as much fun!

We are creating a Time Machine at ‘Pataphysical Studios, our art collective in Mill Valley, where surrealism meets the maker culture. Our Time Machine will take you on wild rides through time, to meet characters from the past, present and future.
On a balmy summer afternoon, we gathered in the art garden to create some of its parts: dragons of change to guide you on your journey; an art priestess in her prehistorical cave; a pataphysical flag on a magic pole; a painted gear holding the secret of life; a cactus of the future strolling by in stop-motion.
We then showed our Time Machine to young Dr. Delia, who gave it the two-year old test, pushing all of its buttons to jump back in time to the age of dinosaurs, her favorite scene. I’m pleased to report that we passed the audition. :)
This was also a great opportunity to celebrate our good friend Dr. Rindbrain’s un-birthday, which we kept low-key at his request. Long live the young at heart!

The goal of this year’s Hebocon Reloaded Open Lab is to build your own low-tech robot as an “alter ego” out of various materials. The end result is a great challenge event where no winner*s are crowned, but the event itself celebrates the coming together and collaborative creative activity of festival-goers, artists, and project partners. You can invest as much time as you need to create your low-tech Heboian robot.
According to Japanese tradition, a Hebocon is a sumo match for low-tech robots and a wrestling match of technical dilettantes. What is meant by this? The word “Hebocon” is derived from the Japanese word “Heboi” – a term that describes something that is technically poor or of low quality. Consequently, a Hebocon is a competition in which poor, simple robots, most of which can barely move, come together on the battlefield and engage in weird, fun fights. A Hebocon celebrates “heboiness,” or mistakes and the people behind them. It’s about fun, learning, creative thinking, building, and watching the robots fight each other together.

Hello everyone! For this Thanksgiving tutorial (if you’re in the USA), I present you with the coffee based drink menu for The Roasterie, a cozy coffee shop located in Piccadilly Circus purveying bold flavors and carefully selected pastries to its patrons.
We’ll use some of the twenty font families included in the font geek’s go-to bundle to accomplish that. We’ll explore basic visual identity building, and how to use the many symbol/dingbats typefaces included in the collection to our advantage for layout building, and more!
So, pour yourself a warm cup of Arabica, and let’s do this.

Creating World War 1 commemoration at Tower of London
The moat of the Tower of London will be filled with almost 900,000 ceramic poppies this summer to mark the 100th anniversary of the beginning of the First World War.
From August 5 to November 11, the dry moat will be turned into a sea of red, with one poppy for each of the 888,246 British and Colonial soldiers killed during the war.

Back to Ypres to attend the Ceremony of Remembrance 'Centenary of Passchendaele , Third Battle of Ypres service at Tyne Cot cemetery. The UK Government organised a public ballot to allocate 4,000 tickets in pairs, free of charge for descendants to attend the commemorative event at CWGC Tyne Cot Cemetery on 31 July and Jan managed to get a couple of tickets. From Ypres station we were bussed to The Memorial Museum Passchendaele 1917 in Zonnebeke.
There were lots of re-en-actors creating campsite atmosphere on the site. Right up my street. I was busy taking photos of them and having chats. The cooks were actually cooking. Their leader told me that they would cook enough Tommy's Stew to feed the 300 actors on site today.
All to soon we had to get on the buses to Tyne Cot which was 1.5 miles away.
My photos of Tyne Cot do not have the impact that seeing it on the ground does. You would need a drone I think. I would like to go back and try again without the crowds.
We made our way to the memorial wall at the back of the cemetery. It is a semi-circular wall 4.25 metres high and over 150 metres long, faced with panels of Portland stone. The names of the missing are carved on the stone panels.
Jan quickly found the the Royal Warwickshire Regiments panel and Ernest Butchers name on it. Jan wrote a message on a poppy cross and placed it at the base of the panel with a photo of Ernest. The message read;
Ernest Leonard Butcher 1879-1917. In remembrance 2017 of our Great Grandad. Love always x.
Unbelievably as my eyes scanned the panel through the C's to the D's there is a Dipper W.A. there!

It was a bit of a kerfuffle trying to find a spot amongst the graves to view the service from but eventually we settled underneath a TV screen in a position you would think nobody would be able to get in front of us later. Of course a few twats managed it!
We had to stand for 3 hours in the hot sun waiting for the Royals to arrive and the service to start. So long that we got to know Pat (who gave Jan her contact details) and Bob from Surrey!
For me the best part of the service were the readings of individual soldiers letters and diaries by descendants and serving military personnel.
At the end of the service as the crowd begins to break up Mary and Dave the Scottish couple walked by (what are the chances?) and stopped for a chat. He was dressed in his full piper regalia minus his bag pipes. He had come yesterday and played at the grave of his ancestor.
We were bussed back to the Memorial Museum Passchendaele 1917 in Zonnebeke for a packed lunch provided by the UK government. It wasn't bad and went some way to ease my bread withdrawal!
By the time we had eaten and made sure we had seen all the re-en-actors we had missed earlier it was time to get the bus back to the station so we missed the museum.

It is now the largest Commonwealth war cemetery in the world in terms of burials. At the suggestion of King George V, who visited the cemetery in 1922, the Cross of Sacrifice was placed on the original large pill-box. There are three other pill-boxes in the cemetery.
There are now 11,961 Commonwealth servicemen of the First World War buried or commemorated in Tyne Cot Cemetery. 8,373 of the burials are unidentified but there are special memorials to more than 80 casualties known or believed to be buried among them. Other special memorials commemorate 20 casualties whose graves were destroyed by shell fire. There are also 4 German burials, 3 being unidentified.
The cemetery was designed by Sir Herbert Baker.
The TYNE COT MEMORIAL forms the north-eastern boundary of Tyne Cot Cemetery and commemorates nearly 35,000 servicemen from the United Kingdom and New Zealand who died in the Ypres Salient after 16 August 1917 and whose graves are not known. The memorial stands close to the farthest point in Belgium reached by Commonwealth forces in the First World War until the final advance to victory.
The memorial was designed by Sir Herbert Baker with sculpture by F V Blundstone.
