Title: Arizona Centennial Celebration
Participants: Antonio Smith-Plata (age 9) and Julia Smith-Plata (age 6) designed and created the panel – I am their Nana (Pamela Smith) -- I provided the supplies for the project, contacted Sue Coccia for permission to use her art and paid the fee.
Dream Theme: Conservation (Nature, animals, etc)
Materials and Techniques Used:
With permission from Sue Coccia -- colored some of her art panels with watercolor pencils. Scanned them into the computer and printed them onto fabric. Used steam a seam 2 to fuse the pictures onto a background fabric. Added a border. Quilted the project. Bound the edge with yarn fibers.
What is your artwork about?
We are Antonio (age 9) and Julia (age (6). We made a quilt panel with our cousins and our Nana two years ago. Now that we are older we wanted to try to do one by ourselves – next year is the Arizona centennial – wit permission we used Sue Coccia art pages with a southwest theme for our quilt. The border is a specially designed Arizona centennial fabric. We hope our quilt is chosen to be shown in Phoenix as we live there. We have done some sewing before and wanted to try a quilt. It was fun and we like how it turned out. We plan to do another one for ourselves.

Our Maker Art class created a Haunted House in fall 2016. In this after-school workshop at the Lycée Français, students ages 7 to 10 built a fantasy world together, with magical creatures, ghosts, witches and other spooky characters.
We combined arts and technology to bring their creations to life: each student created their own room in our haunted house, and animated their characters with motors and simple mechanisms, adding lights and sounds to tell their stories.
Students started by designing their rooms and characters, and built them in their own cardboard ‘wonderboxes.’ We then asked them to sketch up their individual visions of the Haunted House and combined them together. Children worked in teams to build some of the more complex features: a clock tower, an elevator and an animated graveyard zombie, all powered with Arduino boards.
I’m very grateful to my associate teachers for this class: Sarah Brewer and Edward Janne were amazing partners and empowered our students to create their own interactive art, helping them bring their ideas to life in a playful way that made learning more fun.
We taught this class weekly at the Lycée Français in Sausalito, with 8 school students in grades 3, 4 and 5. We met every Thursday at 3:30pm, from September 15 to December 8, 2016. Many of the materials we used in this class were prepared at Tam Makers, our makerspace in Mill Valley.

This is the entrance for a beautiful cave.
If you expect a tiger or bear to be in this one, then you are in for a surprise. This is in a beach and is constructed by those who can walk only sideways! This is a cave whose entrance was not more than 1 cm.
Audio is live recording capturing the combination of the sea breeze and the sound of the waves.
Uh oh. I've created a monster. Noelle saw me killing time out in my grandma's yard on Easter Sunday, and asked if she could take some pictures with my camera. My 9-yr-old daughter appears to have become very comfortable shooting with a $2000 camera and focusing manually with a 44-yr-old 50/1.4 lens (my Asahi/Pentax Super-Takumar). That camera is almost as big as her head!
She's not quite ready to go completely old school yet, but she's pretty good at eyeballing focus through the aftermarket focusing screen (she tends to backfocus, though). She understands that when the numbers on the lens (aperture) get smaller, you have to make the numbers on the LCD (shutter speed) larger to compensate, and she knows which way to turn both dials to make a photo lighter or darker. I had her in full manual mode, of course -- none of this sissy Av nonsense for my princess!
We will pull no punches nor silly puns, and put together a poster for a boxing event, for the second tutorial exploring the complete vintage designer’s kit.
The process will have us explore the customization abilities of the bundle’s typefaces, layout ideas to accommodate the long swashes and tall capital letters, and weathering tips and tricks.

Created for the 2011 Create Your Style Australian Swarovski Competition (closes 30 Sept.) The base of the neckpiece is a Swarovski zipper embellished with 100's of Swarovski elements. I fell in love with Soutache earlier this year, so have been experimenting with this medium. The cascade of briolettes has a flash of purple hues as you move with the neckpiece.
Every bead has been sewn by hand, no glue. This competition does not allow seed beads!

Little did I know about how things would develop then:
During our holiday on Big Island / Hawai’i we met the incredibly talented Jon Lomberg and he gave us a private tour through one of his wonderful projects: #GalaxyGarden ( www.galaxygarden.net )
Jon is one of the world's most distinguished artists inspired by astronomy.
From 1972 until Carl Sagan's death in 1996, he illustrated most of Sagan's books and magazine articles, and he was Chief Artist for Sagan's classic television series. For his work on #COSMOS Jon received in 1981 a Prime Time EMMY Award for "Outstanding Individual Achievement in Creative Technical Crafts".
With the #VoyagerGoldenRecord Jon and his team have created some of the most unusual, durable, and far-flung artifacts ever produced by the human species.
The design for the cover of the Voyager Interstellar Record, predicted to last for over a thousand million years, may be the longest lived piece of human art ever made.

Meeting this great artist in person, whom I always deeply admired and whose work is breathtakingly beautiful and who is inspiring so many people all around our beautiful blue dot touched me deeply inside.
Jon’s work made history already decades ago and still is a fundamental part of #SpaceExploration of mankind.
Talking about many things like space, art and projects like his #GalaxyGarden etc. was amazing.
The latest project of Jon and his team is a crowdfunding campaign to create a self-portrait of humanity to send to the stars on NASA's #Pluto mission #NewHorizons.
This campaign is an invitation to all humans to join this amazing project and become part of our global message.

I fell in love with that campaign immediately, so after our meeting the idea of integrating the #VoyagerGoldenRecord2.0 in my design grew in me.
After completion I send my painting to Jon as I wanted to dedicate it to his project. His reply left me deeply touched and honored, reading that he loves it and would like to share it with his friends.
Like a friend lately said so perfectly:
"Heroes you admired appreciating your work…priceless."
I am delighted to say that my design now even includes a dedication of Jon himself, inviting all of us to #SpeakForEarth together.
And all of us can share our voice and thoughts and build a huge mosaic of our beautiful #BlueDot which then will be sent to #OuterSpace digitally in the near future by Jon's global team and I am curious to see how humankind defines itself these days and what kind of message we will leave in that time capsule - also for our future generations.
I feel like having received an invitaion to a #EndlessGlobalSpaceTweetup - #Spaceholix travelling through space and time TOGETHER.

My business is to create. It doesn't even matter what it is. All I know is if you don't figure out that something, you'll just stay ordinary. And it doesn't matter if its a work of art, or a taco, or a pair of socks. Just create something new and there it is, and it's you, out in the world, outside of you. And you can look at it, or hear it, or read it, or feel it, and you know a little bit more about you. A little more than anyone else does.

All of you flikr users can probably understand why this quote stood out to me. I was watching the movie for the millionth time and I stopped and thought about it, paused the DVD, and went and wrote it down. It inspired me. :)
Okay, you know how on the internet you can see those crazy awesome pictures of professionals who do amazing chalk drawings on random streets? Maybe that's just me. I don't know, but lets give those people a round of applause because in my opinion chalk is evil. I don't know, just the feeling of the chalk scraping against the sidewalk is the worst. Plus it is all powdery so the wind kept blowing away my drawings. grr. But after much frustration and a little blood (I sorta scraped my knuckle on the concrete instead of the chalk. ouch), I finally got this shot. I love it. It's probably not even that good but I don't care. You know when you work really hard on something and no matter what it looks like you just love it? I don't know, I guess since I went through so much frustration and chalk to get this, not to mention the fact that I was actually inspired for once, I'm just really happy with it. So don't judge me. =P
It is a BEAUTIFUL day!:) I can't stand not being outside right now. I hope all of you have a great day!!

I have been having a lot of people tell me I should try to make money with art so I will go against my better judgment and attempt that. My wife told me I have to force myself to do it. So this picture is kind of me saying something like that. I also picked this area to shoot the picture because of the no toys here line. TOYS are people who tag over other people's work in the graffiti subculture. Thanks to FATAL for fake painting
