The Living Room
My Home is where my heart is. Everyone may know me as a contemporary artist - I am, but this is where I spend the bulk of my time.
My partner David and I have transformed this place; tearing off half of it, adding on, filling it with the wonderful objects and art that inspire and bring more meaning to our lives.
I'm just playing around with the settings on my new camera for the most part. And having lots of fun doing it!
I used rolls of lead sheeting (forming a vague rose shape) in the vase to hold the stems of Sweet Avalanche in place. Branches of blossom that finished were stripped of foliage for additional texture.
I have a weakness for grasses, which are great to use at this time of year. I knew I could create quite a messy look with the Panicum viragum 'Squaw', as the huge dahlias were such show stopper, their fiery colours would punch through the design.
I had to be sure that the flowers I chose would be available at auction, due to the ongoing disruption to flights. It happens to be my preference to choose the most seasonal and indigenous flowers available anyway.
I find Digitalis (Foxglove) utterly charming. While it could be classes as a cottage garden flower, here it is given a contemporary twist with these sleek vases.
It was actually helpful to have a person in shot in this picture, as it is difficult gauge the size of these designs from the pictures (the vase in the picture below is very large and contains nearly 70 stems of large arum lily).
When making a large hand-tie with these flowers, I tend to use sellotape, as this doesn't cut into the stems like other materials. I start with a 'core' of about 20 stems and keep adding more, securing each layer by taping, then finally concealing the binding point with sea grass.
I would be interested to hear other people's methods of making large hand ties.
Sometimes my ideas do not translate into effective designs. This week I planned to create a 'pink jungle' with Medinula plants hanging from bamboo canes, their cascading pink flowers complimenting the snaking lines of the 'Sexy Pink' Heleconia. In the end, the Medinula were difficult to hang, and their thick foliage obscured the Heleconia and made the whole design top-heavy.
Instead I added more Heleconia to this design than intended as they needed to compete with the thick black lines of the bamboo. This design would have worked just as well without the bamboo, or worked well if the bamboo had been a lighter colour.
The furry heleconia remind me of tarantulas, or some kind of monster, ideal for a Halloween display.
It was actually quite time-consuming to get these Amaryllis to stay where I wanted them to stay. They kept slipping into the vases, causing them to overflow. There was a lot of mopping up and mild expletives involved!
Hot and cold pinks: URRGH! After ordering the flowers, I discovered flowering quince was available, which being the same salmon-y pink as the Hercules Amaryllis, would have made this design work better. One to remember for next time!
