Primula 'Gold Lace' is one of my favorite varieties of Primrose, reminding me of Auriculas, but a tricky colour to use. I initially intended to use black vases, but I noticed they look great with these copper vases I hadn't used before.
This is an example of what I call 'falling at the last hurdle'. The initial idea came from a design I saw in a Daniel Ost book, where a giant pergola was covered with dried hop vines, with a large arrangement placed within.
Not having the same budget or resources, I spent a week of fiddling with recycled materials in between other jobs and on my day off. I wove some old magnolia branches around a frame made of canes. Thankfully they still had a little sap in them, so I could flex them into shape.
I had been saving green hydrangea from various contracts, as they dry quite nicely, to provide a cover for the structure instead of hops (the strong aroma would cause problems in a restaurant).
Had I had more money and time, I would have made gotten the frame made in steel and and army of helpers to cover it with wood. Anyhow, the shape isn't exactly symmetrical, but has a 'Tim Burton' quality about it.
By the time my colleague and I had managed to drag the whole structure through the hotel and into place, I had little time to make a half decent arrangement to do it justice. I went for a wild, 'Midsummer's Night Dream' look, only it looks more like a nightmare! ;o)
As the main elements will still be in place next week, I hope the design will improve. It was a good experience to work from a design I had seen in a book and made me appreciate just how much time and effort (not to mention skill) had gone into the source inspiration. Quite a learning experience!

A gleaming testament to modern minimalism, this captivating gold sculpture stands tall on a wooden pedestal at the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington, D.C. The piece, with its reflective surface and geometric forms, embodies both elegance and simplicity, creating a powerful dialogue between materials and shapes. At first glance, it might appear as a simple cylindrical form split into angular segments, but a closer inspection reveals a precise and balanced composition that plays with reflections and light, drawing the eye to every angle.
Set atop a sturdy wooden pedestal crafted from rich, warm-toned wood, the sculpture gains an organic contrast. The pedestal itself is a work of art—a geometric base rising to a square platform, topped by a perfectly cut cross-section of the tree trunk, complete with visible growth rings and natural cracks. This juxtaposition between the organic texture of the wood and the polished, reflective gold surface above highlights the artist’s exploration of nature, craft, and industrial materials.
The clean lines and minimalist design echo the broader aesthetic of the Hirshhorn’s modern art collection, where form and material often take center stage. The museum’s subtle white walls and ambient lighting cast gentle shadows that enhance the sculpture’s dimensionality. Even in its simplicity, this piece feels dynamic—its polished surface captures hints of the surrounding space, blurring the line between the artwork and the viewer’s reflection.
For visitors, this sculpture offers a moment of contemplation: a study in contrasts, materials, and craftsmanship. It invites the viewer to consider the relationship between nature and human-made forms, and how the two can coexist beautifully in the language of modern art.
These beautiful fritillarias were not what I ordered! However, I could see the colour would work well in the reception area, and the space was big enough to dispel their pungent fragrance. I chose neutral/nude-coloured vases, as I wanted to create an essay in the absence of strong colour: the blossom has beautiful grey stems and brownish leaves and the glaucous purple fritillaria worked well with the burgundy seating.
However, in terms of form, I loved the simplicity of just the blossom in the vases alone, the fritillaria doesn't sit well with the filigree branches in my opinion, but I know I would have had a complaint if I didn't use any flowers!
Mom: Oh. that's a darling picture of Tommy.
Me: Is that his gift?
Mom: Oh, I'm sure it's not. I wouldn't have wrapped it like that.
Me:What do you mean "like that"?
Mom: It looks like two little jewelry boxes, stacked together.
Me: Speaking of which, do you remember you were getting for Christmas?
Mom: No. That's still the tree from the apartment.
This colorful Matryoshka style statement beaded necklace was created by hand.
She has a lovely black face and playful Braids hair.
The beads made from needle felted wool (100% wool), scissors cut wool felt, painted wood and black stone.

Avoiding the obvious (and v. expensive) choice of red roses, I still wanted to create a passionate and vibrant experience for diners at Espelette. An 'espelette' is a pepper, so this became the inspiration for this weeks design.
As well as fishbowls of peppers dotted around the hotel, I included peppers in the hand ties of 'Armani' tulips (these have a cream edge to break up the redness and lovely dark centres).
Sexy silver vases were ideal foil to the hot colours, reminding me of 50s automobiles, rockets, etc. The silver also complimented the silver on the leaves of the cyclamen.
To avoid paying for costly red roses, I used 'Armani' tulips and 'Ranunculus' Roses, which are red and cream. Some old fire buckets were filled with the flame-like tulips and I sprayed hearts on the front.
I thought I was going to have to make do without any eggs this Easter, as everyone else had claimed the ones we had in store. Luckily Kally had ordered these decorations and they arrived the evening before we set up. I couldn't have asked for a better colour too.

The Dining Room

The mansion is a Grade II listed building, so we have to be careful not to damage anything when decorating the rooms. In the library, we place more of the white-pained Birch trunks in large cylinder vases, securing them by adding white gravel and then a layer of fake snow. Magnolia branches were then cable-tied to the trunks, and then acrylic icicles were cable tied to the magnolia branches.
I used hundreds of small bud vases with spring flowers for this week's designs. Along this corridor, a series of vases holding Snake's head Fritillary created a serpentine path, weaving along the ledges.
Fritilaria meleagris: probably one of my favorite flowers.

For me, April is the month of blossom, but May is the month of fragrance. For this reason, I chose lots of scented flowers for the Grove this week. Uncultivated, locally-sourced Lilac forms a purple haze above the guests' heads in the reception. Elsewhere I used clove-scented Stocks and Sweet William.
If you could only smell this picture!
I love short-lived summer flowers, even if they are time consuming to condition and need to be replaced after a few days. Nigella has fine stems and foliage, these vases show them off at their best.
Hop vines were tied to the overhead light and the wicker basket to create a wild and unkempt look to this week's design.
I love working with grasses, especially as we hardly use any foliage at McQueens.
This design is in the Business Centre at The Grove, so the design is quite masculine, yet the Panicum viragum 'Squaw' lends a sensual element. This was a quick design to produce as we kept the same vases we used last week, but added a few more.
