I love working with grasses, especially as we hardly use any foliage at McQueens.

This design is in the Business Centre at The Grove, so the design is quite masculine, yet the Panicum viragum 'Squaw' lends a sensual element. This was a quick design to produce as we kept the same vases we used last week, but added a few more.

The Living Room

My Home is where my heart is. Everyone may know me as a contemporary artist, web designer and art collector - I am, and this is where I spend the bulk of my time.

My partner David and I have transformed this place; tearing off half of it, adding on, filling it with the wonderful objects and art that inspire and bring more meaning to our lives.

I'm just playing around with the settings on my new camera for the most part. And having lots of fun doing it!

As always, I am at www.brycehudson.com

I persuaded the antique shop where I found this toy train to allow me to hire it for the Christmas period, as it would have been out of my budget to buy.

These pictures represent the kind of direction I would like to take my work in the future.

It's not often the light is so good and the restaurant is so empty, so I took a couple of shots of the orchids we use. There used to be cut flowers on the tables, but reduce maintenance, I changed them for mini phalenopsis.

A striking black and white perspective of modern architecture in Copenhagen. The curved building lines twist towards the sky, creating a dynamic play of geometry, light, and shadow. This abstract composition captures the fusion of design and creativity, highlighting the elegance and futuristic spirit of urban architecture.

Unsure of what to with the Hellebore plants I had bought, this composition took a few minutes to create. The willow had been lying around the shop for a while and I just grabbed a few stems to add interest to plants in an odd assortment of vases, as I loved the colour combination of pale green hellebore flowers and brown willow.

The vases used here have very narrow necks, which limits the variety of flowers we can use with them. Only thin and long stemmed flowers are suitable, especially as the water level drops so quickly when so much is displaced by thickness of the stem in a narrow space.

This makes the yellow Oncidium orchids ideal for this kind of arrangement. They last longer than Mimosa (which is available at this time of year) and make a delicate partner to the fine lines of pussy willow branches.

During my parents' annual visit to Austin, I took my mother to visit the Blanton Museum of Art (200 E. MLK Jr. Blvd.) on the University of Texas campus. We began our visit on the ground floor at the museum's featured temporary exhibit: Making Africa: A Continent of Contemporary Design. As we made our way through the exhibits, this display of African fashion and photography captured my attention.

Placards along the base of the display provided further details on some of the works, including the the sculptural shoes near the center and the two garments toward the far right:

Leanie van der Vyver

Born Bethel, South Africa, 1980

Scary Beautiful, manufactured in collaboration with René van den Berg, 2012

Shoes: leather and carbon fiber

Absurd fashion practices were followed for millennia before being banned by society: ribcage-breaking corsets that gave users a beautiful hourglass shape, or shoes that forced women to lose both toes and their walking capacity for the chance of securing a wealthy husband. Contemporary beauty and fashion standards are arguably no better, and in response to her frustrations with the insatiable expectations of modern life, designer Leanie van der Vyver took on one of the most iconic fashion symbols – the high-heeled shoe – and designed the controversial Scary Beautiful shoes as her graduation project from Amsterdam's Gerrit Rietveld Academie. Van der Vyver worked with shoe designer René van den Berg to create the pieces: two impossibly high, reversed high heels, made of leather and soft orthopedic foam. Despite severing the woman’s mobility and controlling her shape to the extreme, the shoes are actually wearable. By amplifying the movements and alterations caused by high heels, Scary Beautiful becomes a bold fashion statement and social critique that questions the idea of fashion, perfection, and beauty. What lies beyond the projection of perfection? Where do the limits between sexy and grotesque, beauty and monstrous lie?

MISWudé

Jewelry and fashion label, Dakar, Senegal, established 2008 by Cécile and Mbor Ndiaye

Waxology, #1, 2014, from the series Waxologie

Cotton wax print fabric

The body jewellery is made with the aid of wax-dyed cotton fabric cut into strips, processed using various different techniques and then brought into shape. Both material and form refer to traditional African handicrafts; the aesthetics, however, are also reminiscent of 18th century anatomical studies. At the same time, the body jewellery items play with the same kind of subtle erotica that is typical of sexy underwear in West Africa – in that it enhances, while concealing the body. What is key for understanding the work, however, is the role of wax, the cloth that also gives the work its name. Crucial for West Africa’s aesthetic industry, this fabric stands here for Africa's lacking sovereignty. It is a product of colonial expansion that has never been manufactured in Africa and today, it is linked with Africa only at the level of consumption and processing. The creative and constructive re-interpretation of the cloth in Waxology – its cutting and re-joining – liberates it from its colonial context, thus symbolizing nothing less than the re-invention of an African aesthetic identity.

Maki Oh

Fashion label, Lagos, Nigeria, established 2010 by Amaka Osakwe

I Came to Myself in a Dark Wood, from the collection Virgin, Autumn/Winter 2014/2015

Silk

Fashion label Maki Oh's dress I Came to Myself in a Dark Wood takes its name from the opening line of Dante Alighieri's The Divine Comedy. The innovative cutouts of the dress's top layer, with two shades of nude silk lining, suggest the bark of a tree, a trompe l'oeil effect that evokes Dante's hallucinatory journey through the forest. Maki Oh's founder and director, Amaka Osakwe, is committed to exploring the complexities of womanhood through her blending of western couture and African techniques. For the Virgin collection, Osakwe replaced with sparkling Lurex the cotton and silk threads of aso oke, a traditional Yoruba fabric handwoven on a wooden loom. Her sensual, sophisticated designs challenge conservative attitudes toward female sexuality in Nigerian society.

The 'Limelight' Hydrangea I used on Friday were not very long-lasting. I replaced with 'Magical Opal', and used some Italian Rose-hip from the previous week

The original plan was to use Angelica and Hydrangeas of any colour but green, as I had already used green Hydrangeas two weeks ago. However, Angelica wasn't available and my supplier recommended both the Allium seed heads and the green Hydrangea, as they were quite cheap. I was pleased with the textural combination and it worked well with the bulbous vases I chose.

I took this picture just before removing this design to place fresh flowers. The unopened Alliums have yellowed, and the Agapanthus threaded through the hydrangeas have collapsed somewhat.

A popular design at Orrery, managing to look exotic whilst actually being quite conventional.

The image shows one of the most iconic complexes in the City of Arts and Sciences in Valencia, an urban renewal project carried out between the late 20th and early 21st centuries to enhance the city’s cultural and scientific offerings. In the foreground, the reflecting pool features a metal sculpture of Neptune by Antonio Mari; the figure of the Roman god of the sea serves as a symbolic reference to Valencia’s historical relationship with the Mediterranean and creates a focal point that interacts with the reflections and the surrounding architectural scale. In the background stands the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía, an opera house and arts center designed by Santiago Calatrava, featuring a structural language based on white concrete, steel, and large glass surfaces. To the left, the green area belongs to the Turia River Gardens, established on the river’s former bed following the diversion works prompted by the floods of 1957.

A life size sculpture in chicken wire, covered with preserved moss for a roof terrace in The Berkeley Hotel. I enlarged a photograph I found on the internet to give me the proportions. It didn't look much like the picture, but seemed to take on a life of it's own. I am currently working on a second figure.

Mom: A marionette! A horse. And I guess his horses are on the couch.
