The cut ends of calla lilies will splay out to look like a vase full of calamari after a day or so. I tied the stem ends of the millet and the calla together with a small piece of wire to prevent this happening.
An amazing open floorplan with 2,464 sq. ft. that’s contemporary yet functional. It’s loft-style living in a townhome configuration. There’s a private library (or perhaps a 4th bedroom) and a spacious and highly useable rec room on the 1st level. And when you reach the top of the stairs to the main level it’s an OMG moment that captures everyone’s attention with a dramatic open and we mean OPEN floorplan that allows buyers to have unobstructed views from the front dining room to rear rooftop terrace. A truly modern kitchen with an enormous island and spectacular cabinet wall captivates even those who aren’t a Top Chef.
I bought some old books from a charity shop to make this giant paper wreath. If I had had more time, it would have been nice to use French books. The music sheets making up the biggest ring was actually an image of music I found on the internet, which I then photocopied on to ivory paper and aged with some spray paint.
I've used Chaenomeles japonica (Quince) in front of this picture before . I love the contrast of coral pink against turquoise and it works particularly well with these brown vases.
Two large white perspex containers were lined with floral foam to support a framework of bleached bamboo. The structure was further strengthened with the use of cable ties, which were also used to secure some of the thick stems of these beautiful white Eremurus.
I might have to lie these arrangements down to get them in the van for delivery tomorrow, but nothing is likely to move, as they are securely made.
This week, I had a second shot at getting my 'Midsummer Night's Dream' design right. By using a limited colour palette, it is difficult to distinguish between the dried hydrangea on the 'roof' and the fresh flowers in the urn. Varigated ivy and white mini-cyclamen help tie the whole design together. The urn contained a folage we call 'Silver Leaf', green sedum and a mixture of white and off-white hydrangea.
The arrangement was much more controlled than last week, making the 'pergola' I fashioned out of magnolia twigs more visible. Not a patch on the original Danel Ost inspiration, but quite lovely none-the-less.
In order to get the stems mostly out of water, thus creating a larger arrangement, we normally lean the stems against the side of the vase. However, this does not work in narrow necked vases, as the stem is much too vertical to avoid slipping back into the water. The trick was to cut a small section of the allium stem and wedge it between the stems as the emerge from the vase, which will force them to press against the vase sides and hold in place. Not only do you get a much taller arrangement, you also get a neat little design quirk.
Callicarpa: a very messy, droppy berry to work with, but I cannot resist that electric purple. It makes a striking combination with the green vases chosen by my colleague, Rebecca.
Primula 'Gold Lace' is one of my favorite varieties of Primrose, reminding me of Auriculas, but a tricky colour to use. I initially intended to use black vases, but I noticed they look great with these copper vases I hadn't used before.
This is an example of what I call 'falling at the last hurdle'. The initial idea came from a design I saw in a Daniel Ost book, where a giant pergola was covered with dried hop vines, with a large arrangement placed within.
Not having the same budget or resources, I spent a week of fiddling with recycled materials in between other jobs and on my day off. I wove some old magnolia branches around a frame made of canes. Thankfully they still had a little sap in them, so I could flex them into shape.
I had been saving green hydrangea from various contracts, as they dry quite nicely, to provide a cover for the structure instead of hops (the strong aroma would cause problems in a restaurant).
Had I had more money and time, I would have made gotten the frame made in steel and and army of helpers to cover it with wood. Anyhow, the shape isn't exactly symmetrical, but has a 'Tim Burton' quality about it.
By the time my colleague and I had managed to drag the whole structure through the hotel and into place, I had little time to make a half decent arrangement to do it justice. I went for a wild, 'Midsummer's Night Dream' look, only it looks more like a nightmare! ;o)
As the main elements will still be in place next week, I hope the design will improve. It was a good experience to work from a design I had seen in a book and made me appreciate just how much time and effort (not to mention skill) had gone into the source inspiration. Quite a learning experience!

A gleaming testament to modern minimalism, this captivating gold sculpture stands tall on a wooden pedestal at the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington, D.C. Even in its simplicity, this piece feels dynamic—its polished surface captures hints of the surrounding space, blurring the line between the artwork and the viewer’s reflection.
For visitors, this sculpture offers a moment of contemplation: a study in contrasts, materials, and craftsmanship. It invites the viewer to consider the relationship between nature and human-made forms, and how the two can coexist beautifully in the language of modern art.

Me:What do you mean "like that"?
Mom: It looks like two little jewelry boxes, stacked together.
Me: Speaking of which, do you remember you were getting for Christmas?
Mom: No. That's still the tree from the apartment.
This colorful Matryoshka style statement beaded necklace was created by hand.
She has a lovely black face and playful Braids hair.
The beads made from needle felted wool (100% wool), scissors cut wool felt, painted wood and black stone.

Avoiding the obvious (and v. expensive) choice of red roses, I still wanted to create a passionate and vibrant experience for diners at Espelette. An 'espelette' is a pepper, so this became the inspiration for this weeks design.
As well as fishbowls of peppers dotted around the hotel, I included peppers in the hand ties of 'Armani' tulips (these have a cream edge to break up the redness and lovely dark centres).
Sexy silver vases were ideal foil to the hot colours, reminding me of 50s automobiles, rockets, etc. The silver also complimented the silver on the leaves of the cyclamen.
To avoid paying for costly red roses, I used 'Armani' tulips and 'Ranunculus' Roses, which are red and cream. Some old fire buckets were filled with the flame-like tulips and I sprayed hearts on the front.
I thought I was going to have to make do without any eggs this Easter, as everyone else had claimed the ones we had in store. Luckily Kally had ordered these decorations and they arrived the evening before we set up. I couldn't have asked for a better colour too.
