I spent most of today picking out the stamen from the lilies! These large black 'egg' vases would be too heavy to lift if filled with water, so I use a metal bucket which sits on the rim and the flowers are pushed into floral foam to create the shape.
It was actually helpful to have a person in shot in this picture, as it is difficult gauge the size of these designs from the pictures (the vase in the picture below is very large and contains nearly 70 stems of large arum lily).
When making a large hand-tie with these flowers, I tend to use sellotape, as this doesn't cut into the stems like other materials. I start with a 'core' of about 20 stems and keep adding more, securing each layer by taping, then finally concealing the binding point with sea grass.
I would be interested to hear other people's methods of making large hand ties.
Sometimes my ideas do not translate into effective designs. This week I planned to create a 'pink jungle' with Medinula plants hanging from bamboo canes, their cascading pink flowers complimenting the snaking lines of the 'Sexy Pink' Heleconia. In the end, the Medinula were difficult to hang, and their thick foliage obscured the Heleconia and made the whole design top-heavy.
Instead I added more Heleconia to this design than intended as they needed to compete with the thick black lines of the bamboo. This design would have worked just as well without the bamboo, or worked well if the bamboo had been a lighter colour.
The furry heleconia remind me of tarantulas, or some kind of monster, ideal for a Halloween display.
It was actually quite time-consuming to get these Amaryllis to stay where I wanted them to stay. They kept slipping into the vases, causing them to overflow. There was a lot of mopping up and mild expletives involved!
Hot and cold pinks: URRGH! After ordering the flowers, I discovered flowering quince was available, which being the same salmon-y pink as the Hercules Amaryllis, would have made this design work better. One to remember for next time!

This vivid, golden one of a kind statement necklace was created by hand.
The body of this collar necklace is needle felted wool (100% wool), swarovski colorful cristal stone, green and yellow Czech beads and gold embroidery thread.
My inspiration for this necklace comes from primitives culture and wild nature.

Occasionally I like to use really bright colours in this room, rather than trying to harmonise or tone in. This variety of Helenium, 'Kanaria', is very inexpensive and also a long-laster. These are the vases just before I was about to take them away. They look their best after a week.
The Ranunculus roses were grouped for impact, as they have short stems in comparison to the rosehips.
Orange Dahlias formed a lovely contrast with the dusky/steely blue soft furnishings. The copper and terracotta pots complimented their orange flowers and brown stems. The pots also harmonised with the standing copper lamps in the background.
Snake-head Fritillarias are very delicate and short lived. It's easy to walk past without noticing them (but rewarding to the eye that lingers). I knew I would have to combine them with bolder flowers for the overall design to work.
