Gila Woodpeckers make their nests in saguaro cacti. Kind of cool woodpecker but they do hang off of our hummingbird feeders to take a drink of nectar. That makes my wife mad. So now whenever Jasper hears a Gila Woodpecker, he starts barking. If it makes Mom mad, it makes Jasper mad.
"Infuse your life with action. Don't wait for it to happen. Make it happen. Make your own future. Make your own hope. Make your own love. And whatever your beliefs, honor your creator, not by passively waiting for grace to come down from upon high, but by doing what you can to make grace happen... yourself, right now, right down here on Earth."
-Bradley Whitford

"There are always the faces that
Have perfect smiles and eyes so
Exceptionally wild and alive. Just a glimpse
Yet quickly they disappear.
Always taunting and teasing and
Reason my mind creates, fiction too
Extravagant to satiate in circumstance.
But as much as you fantasize
Every look into those tempting lies
Always show little to no result.
Unless this was a movie, no
Twinkles will shine, all rain inside and
I will watch as they pass by
Full of fanciful glee.
Unto them I glance and wish for a chance
Lest one of them look back at me."
This morning, when I opened my curtains, a robin landed on my railing with a wad of moss in its beak. So I'm assuming yesterday this rather plump robin might have been staking out the best place to build a nest.

Robin lays quietly on the grass after rough housing it all day and playing with his favorite "Chuck It " ball. Seems he's contemplating life..or maybe he's just plain tuckered out.
Long-billed Corella (Cacatua tenuirostris)
These two were watching the rest of the flock, about 20 birds, to see if they were staying or leaving. They all left shortly after this shot.
people ask me constantly how I get my cats to pose for pictures.
I always have to tell them that you can't 'pose" a cat, you simply have to wait until they position themselves in the right spot and keep your camera handy.
Vinny has become a real champ at finding just the right places to arrange himself!

A Rock Wren appears to be carefully studying the artifacts from my lens as it perches above a canyon along the Rancho Viejo Trail in Big Bend Ranch State Park.
Bamford Edge - two people sitting close to the edge taking in the scene. People in the image gives perspective. Like the sky too.
I've been a bit preoccupied with other things lately and haven't shot a lot of portraiture. However, I thought I'd try a couple of self portraits yesterday incorporating the use of my newly acquired Sekonic L-758DR. Using the light meter I'm better able to nail exposure in a shorter amount of time.
Throughout this exercise I started thinking about shadows. My typical portrait style has revolved around minimizing shadows and slightly overexposing skin tones. But the more I shoot, the more I realize that carefully crafting the appearance and location of shadows can help create a fantastic, albeit moody image. That's why I'm going to start focusing more on shadows and how they help craft a captivating image.
