Had some time to chill and think over this past year...LOTS of downs...but plenty of ups to make up for them:)

The Philadelphia Museum of Art has mounted an extraordinary retrospective of Paul Strand's work. The curators have filled gallery after gallery with his haunting portraits of people and places, the images almost all of modest or even very small size, formats that require close inspection and foster a wonderful feeling of intimacy for the viewing. Also included are 3 of his short films, startling and personal.
The exhibit moves to Europe in January and, apparently, does not return to the U.S.

As the sun sets and the day winds down Zlatina rests and contemplates. Maybe a few scratches underneath the chin to end the day? Too bad her feline friend has other ideas!
What do cows think about? This one was just stood at the edge of the lake at Ennerdale for ages, looking into the distance, like it was deep in contemplation.
Any dog walker will tell you. The morning routine, down well trod paths in all types of weather, leaves time to ponder.
Several months ago, we got to spend some time with a pair of American dippers. We stumbled across them while out looking for whatever we could find. In the distance a song sparrow was singing its heart out along the river's bank and that's when we saw this pair flying back and forth. At first we thought that they were foraging for food, but it soon became clear that they were actually foraging for nesting material ... to which they would promptly return back to their nest building site.
It was so much fun to photograph them as they would fly swiftly ... nice and low across the surface of the water.
We tried to visit and find some babies, but while they were still there, we didn't see any little ones. Perhaps it was too early ... perhaps they had already fledged or just not out and about at the moment. Who knows, but the experience of our encounter was good enough for me!
