Pompeius pompeius (Latreille, [1824])

(Pompeius Skipper)

Pompeius pompeius occurs from Colombia to Brazil and Peru.

There are at least 1038 known species of Grass Skippers (Hesperiinae) found in the neotropical region. Many of them are dull brown in colour, and virtually devoid of recognisable markings. Some genera however such as Pompeius are easy to recognise due to strongly patterned undersides, or because they have a distinctive configuration of pale spots at the apex of the forewing.

1953 Kaiser Manhattan

In 1951, Frazer debuted a new design that would continue until the company’s end of U.S. passenger car production in 1955. Designed by Howard “Dutch” Darrin, the cars were longer, lower, and swoopier. The top-of-the-line Manhattan cost just over $3,000, and fewer than 300 were produced in all.

For 1952, the Manhattan name was shifted to the Kaiser nameplate, and the car received a markedly different exterior that was consistent with the rest of the brand. Most notably, a pronounced dip adorned the center of the windshield and rear glass, and the grille had a simple top bar that curved around the front fenders. For this model year, body style choices were greatly revised, as the convertible model was removed, a club coupe and a two-door sedan were added, and Traveler configurations could be ordered. List prices dropped considerably, and production numbers were much higher.

The 1953 model year was mostly the same, though the Manhattan could be ordered with “Bambu” interior, and body choices were limited to a two-door club sedan, and four-door sedan, and a Traveler sedan. For 1954, Darrin redesigned the Manhattan’s grille in a new “jet air-scoop” design, supposedly borrowed from the Buick XP-300 show car. More importantly a McCulloch supercharger became standard on the Manhattan’s old flathead six, which boosted output to 140 hp. Even so, sales dropped to 4,325 Manhattans.

By 1955, it was all over. Only 1,231 supercharged Manhattans were built that year, with 1,021 being sent to Argentina. The tooling was sent down to Buenos Aires and the Kaiser Manhattans continued to be sold in South America until 1962 as the Carabella.

Captain Davie described the configuration of the great banking room. "Before conversion, three sets of four teller stations were placed between the square pillars on the right side. Each station included the main parts of classical architecture in reduced size, the horizontal entablature resting on the two vertical columns and consisting of cornice, frieze, and architrave. Strong structures supported a bronze hinged wicket at each of the 16 positions. Some of these groupings have been rearranged to accommodate hotel design requirements."

Although the use of the San Diego Trust & Savings Bank building changed ten years ago, from a bank and offices to a hotel with 245 guest rooms, the original features of the structure remain remarkably intact. The Courtyard-Marriott Hotel, located in the heart of a vibrant downtown San Diego, is a spectacular example of successful readapted use. The hotel stands proud in the bank's place, as the sentinel of an important piece of San Diego history.

So this is the picture that I've really wanted to take for the past few weeks, and I finally got everything lined up for it!

The vehicle is the same base as my previous picture, but in what I want to call the "Sentinel" configuration with the back changed out for a more armored module and a computer-assisted rocket launcher and machine gun combo on top so multiples of these can pretty much set up in a defensive position and hold their own against the enemy laying down some serious cover fire and firing off four rockets at a time. The rockets can be reloaded manually through the back.

I just finished reading Kristin Cashore's new book, "Bitterblue", and found it entertaining and thoughtful, with a wide range of interesting characters. This quote stuck with me. It's taken from a scene in which the Queen (Bitterblue), sits down to dinner with a few others, and on her mind is the topic of Po and Katsa's relationship, turbulent as it may be.

Bitterblue stabbed a mystery pie across the table with her fork and was delighted when it turned out to be made of winter squash. She pushed her plate closer and shoveled herself a generous portion. "It's just that while I'm sure I would like the making up, I don't think I have the heart for constant fighting," she said. "I think I might prefer something--more peaceful in execution."

Giddon cracked a grin. "They do give the impression that no one else has nearly as much fun making up."

"But people do, you know," said Bann, perhaps a bit slyly. "I wouldn't worry about them, Lady Queen, and I wouldn't worry about what it means. Every configuration of people is an entirely new universe unto itself."

Wise words, I think. Anyway, here's a scene from a recent hike up Silver Star Mountain... the light? Was incredible at this particular point in the trail. And I couldn't stop swooning over the wildflowers.

Artist’s impression of the BepiColombo spacecraft in cruise configuration, flying past Earth and with the Sun in the background. After launch, BepiColombo will return to Earth two years later to make a gravity-assist flyby, before flying by Venus twice and Mercury six times before entering orbit around the innermost planet.

In this view, the Mercury Transfer Module is at the rear, with its solar wings extended, spanning about 30 m from tip-to-tip. Because the arrays are tilted towards the Sun, the underside of the panels can be seen. The 7.5 m-long solar array of the Mercury Planetary Orbiter in the middle is seen extending to the top, with the high-gain antenna dish to the left, and the magnetometer boom and medium gain antenna to the right. The Mercury Magnetospheric Orbiter sits inside the sunshield, its antenna folded inside and visible in this view.

one of my favorite compositions because of the minuscule vibrancy and the natural framing created by the vignette from the long exposure.

I'll be back out here in a month so figured it's time to get in the mood with a few more from last year.

I definitely want to spend a bit more time over on this side of the railroad though I can't imagine ever topping this moment. I shared the money shot long ago here: flic.kr/p/2pa8o2J but here's another frame as the scene began to unfold with CN train U7918203, a load of taconite from Minntac headed to Two Harbors behind a brace of C40-8s led by CN (blt. Jul. 1989 as CNW 8511). One of a large group retired by UP more than 23 years ago they were Citirail lease units for a time until the CN purchased the entire fleet between 2010-2012, and later modified a portion of those with straight air for Iron Range ore train service. Alas their time seems to be about up as a string is already in storage at Proctor and according to knowledgeable locals by this time next year they should all be gone from this service replaced by rebuilt wide nose Dash 9s running in a 1x1 DP configuration.

The heavy train is swinging around the curve to begin the climb up toward the Hwy 44 crossing at MP 22.7 southbound on the Iron Range Subdivision. Modern day CN's designation for the route pays homage to the historic former Duluth and Iron Range Railroad which built this route and saw its first load of ore roll south from the Soudan Mine in 1884 to what was then called Agate Bay. In 1938 the road was merged into the Duluth, Missabe and Northern both long owned by US Steel to officially create the legendary Duluth, Missabe and Iron Range Railway.

Jee, got a Harry Potter look after a use of my portrait in photolab.

Have a nice week everybody and thanks for passing by.

So, here is what’s happening. I was going to show a different equipment configuration because I am planning on using the EOS70D next time round for another go at the gyrfalcon. That would eliminate the need for the 1.4 extender and possibly speed up autofocus a bit. To that purpose, I was diligently testing at home getting some encouraging results even up to ISO 3200. A bit softer but still quite useable and I actually liked that effect. So, since the light turned dark and miserable today, I abandoned that trip and focused on showing my result with this configuration on a female red crossbill. And then of course, I got sidetracked and came across this little beauty (yes, also the female Red Crossbill) in some wonderful lighting conditions that I was unable to resist. The cool thing here is that the water in the birdbath is releasing some steam that is clearly visible in the early morning sun and the light on the bird itself is something that I could not turn a blind eye to. (yes, bad grammar I know). She is obviously quite captivated by the steam as well. No need to talk about her beak or her non-red color. And even though I suspect that she’s an adult female, just on the off-chance she’s not, she will be one soon.

"Bass Harbor Head Light is a lighthouse located within Acadia National Park in the southwest portion of Mount Desert Island, Maine, marking the entrance to Bass Harbor and Blue Hill Bay.

The history of Bass Harbor Head Light dates to 1855, when it was determined that there was sufficient reason for a lighthouse at the mouth of Bass Harbor. In 1855, the U.S. Congress appropriated $5,000 for construction of the lighthouse. In 1876, construction was completed on a fog bell and tower, since removed. A much larger 4,000-pound (1,800 kg) bell was placed inside the tower in 1898. The house of the lightkeeper remains in its original configuration with the exception of a 10-foot (3.0 m) addition that was added in 1900. The lighthouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places as Bass Harbor Head Light Station on January 21, 1988, reference number 87002273.

In 1902, an oil storage house constructed of brick was built 205 feet (62 m) northwest of the lighthouse.

Bass Harbor's fifth order Fresnel lens was replaced in 1902 with a larger fourth order. This lens was manufactured by the French company Henry-Lepaute. This lens remains in service today.

Today, the house is a private residence for a local Coast Guard member and his family. Tourists can get close to the bell and light via a concrete path, but most of the grounds remain private. There is a short walk which takes one to a series of wooden steps that lead down onto the many granite boulders that provide a great view of the harbor side of the lighthouse." (Wikipedia)

The Claymore heavy fighter is designed to engage capital ships. It is typically deployed from carriers where it is transported in a folded configuration, stacked in racks of eight.

It is armed with two dual plasma projectile cannons. The cannons can be configured to shoot short salvos where the four cannons fire in succession, or they can fire a single coordinated shot with devastating power.

Because of it's thin profile the Claymore is hard to hit from forward and behind. A capital ship without escort will not last many minutes against a wing of these.

Built for SHIPtember 2021!

Length: 44 studs

Width: 64 studs

Height: 106 studs

With only a few days left before september 1, I decided to build my verison of a concept by Theo Stylianides:

I've wanted to build it for some time but didn't really know if I could pull of the delicate design.

I had to rebuild it many times during the month. Because I wanted it so thin, it was hard to assemble all the parts. At one point the whole ship just broke apart and I had to rebuild everything. The vertical body of the ship is only 1 stud thick, but built with SNOT-bricks so I can attach plates on the sides. The black stripe on the side on the ship plus the engines are what's keeping it together. The upper and lower part are held together with a technic tructure that also contains the mechanism for folding the wings.

There is a small doodle on the original concept art that suggests the "wings" can be folded. I didn't know if I should bother with it, but I thought it would make the ship a bit more interesting if I could manage that feature. So after much experimentation I was able to build a mechanism that folds one wing up and the other one down.

An other thing that gave me problems during the build process was gravity. Again. The design makes it very tail heavy. My original plan was to just make it stand on the cannons, but that would have made the whole ship tip over backwards. The solution was to build a stand for it. It's not really that pretty. I might have to redesign the stand later.

I've spent many late nights on this. Sacrificing sleep. It was fun, but now I'm fed up with it! 😄

Thanks to everyone who helped me and gave me feedback!

Tepetitlan, Hidalgo.

Hi there, Jack here again. This time I’m here to present my custom LEGO rendition of a US Army Air Forces GMC 353 CCKW Refueler truck.

The GMC CCKW 2 and a half ton truck was a workhorse of the US military throughout the Second World War and the Korean War, seeing action in a variety of theaters within each conflict. Around 518,000 CCKWs were produced between 1941 and 1945, encompassing a broad multitude of configurations. The configuration I chose was an airfield fuel truck, perhaps to go with my airplanes I’ve made. The model features working steering and even space for a minifigure in the cab. Constructive criticism, as always, is highly appreciated.
