Atypical configuration in BCN due the works on the 25L header. The runway 02 is active for arrival, really strange in daily operations. Here is the Emirates Cargo 777F arriving in a spring weather today with the brother A380 on the background.

The Northrop M2-F3 was a heavyweight lifting body rebuilt from the Northrop M2-F2 after it crashed at the Dryden Flight Research Center in 1967. The "M" refers to "manned" and "F" refers to "flight" version.

 

Early flight testing of the M2-F1 and M2-F2 lifting body re-entry configurations had validated the concept of piloted lifting body re-entry from space. When the M2-F2 crashed on 10 May 1967, valuable information had already been obtained and was contributing to new designs.

 

NASA pilots said the M2-F2 had lateral control problems, so when it was rebuilt at Northrop and redesignated the M2-F3, it was modified with an additional third vertical fin - centred between the tip fins - to improve control characteristics.

 

After a three-year-long redesign and rebuilding effort, the 2.3-tonne (empty) M2-F3 was ready to fly. The May 1967 crash had torn off the left fin and landing gear. It had also damaged the external skin and internal structure. Flight Research Center engineers worked with Ames Research Center and the Air Force in redesigning the vehicle with a centre fin to provide greater stability. At first, it seemed that the vehicle had been irreparably damaged, but the original manufacturer, Northrop, did the repair work and returned the redesigned M2-F3 with a centre fin for stability to the FRC.

 

While the M2-F3 was still demanding to fly, the centre fin eliminated the high risk of pilot-induced oscillation (PIO) that had been characteristic of the M2-F2.

 

First flight of the M2-F3, with NASA pilot Bill Dana at the controls, was 2 June 1970. The modified vehicle exhibited much better lateral stability and control characteristics than before, and only three glide flights were necessary before the first powered flight on 25 November 1970. The 100th flight of the heavyweight lifting bodies was completed on 5 October 1972, with pilot Bill Dana soaring to an altitude of 20,200m and a Mach number of 1.370 in the M2-F3. Over its 27 missions, the M2-F3 reached a top speed of 1,064 mph (Mach 1.6). Highest altitude reached by the vehicle was 20,790m on 20 December 1972, the date of its last flight, with NASA pilot John Manke at the controls.

 

A reaction control thruster (RCT) system, similar to that on orbiting spacecraft, was also installed to obtain research data about their effectiveness for vehicle control. As the M2-F3's portion of the lifting body programme neared an end, it evaluated a rate command augmentation control system, and a side-arm control stick similar to side-arm controllers now used on many modern aircraft.

 

NASA donated the M2-F3 vehicle to the Smithsonian Institution in December 1973. It is seen above hanging in the foyer of the National Air and Space Museum on the Mall in Washington DC. - details from Wikipedia.

A Hong Kong toy maker known as TINY City Toyeast has produced a series of OO-scale (1/76) vehicles. This is a Mercedes-Benz Antos 3-axle chassis in TVB ** outside broadcast truck / lorry configuration.

 

The scale model has two side extendible pods and the left-side pod has moveable steps.

 

The model sells for about USD $40 plus shipping, on eBay and other on-line shops.

 

** TVB is Television Broadcasts Limited, one of Hong Kong's main tv broadcasters.

A friend of mine recently asked me to take some pictures of his beautiful Aston Martin DB6 convertible, and this was really dry run to see if I could PS a picture and make it into something special for him. His car is also silver so this was a good test of how much I could push the tone and filter settings to deepen the look of the paint without losing the highlights.

With the three-part Allegra electric multiple unit (not shown), the new six-part Alvra articulated train and the blue catering cars, the passenger train section of this train was too long for Bergün station.

 

At least a car was so outside the platform area and our train attendant had to look, that no frail people got out there.

 

With the Glacier Express car the train is still longer, but in Bergün only boarding is allowed.

 

The Allegra EMU is currently the only pulling force for the Alvra trains, since the braking system of the locomotives still has to be adapted for trains with further cars.

Mit den dreiteiligen Allegra-Triebzug (nicht im Bild), dem neuen sechsteiligen Alvra-Gliederzug und den beiden blauen Verpflegungswagen war unser der Personenteil dieses Zuges zu lang für den Bahnhof Bergün.

 

Mindestens ein Wagen war ausserhalb des Bahnsteigbereichs und unser Zugbegleiter musste schauen, dass keine gebrechlichen Personen dort ausstiegen.

 

Zwar sind die Züge mit angehängten Glacier-Express-Wagen noch länger, dort ist aber z.B. in Bergün nur Einsteigen erlaubt.

 

Der Allegra ist momentan die einzige Zugkraft für die Alvra Züge, da für Züge mit weiteren Wagen das Bremssystem der Loks noch angepasst werden muss.

Imbrium Lunokhod Industries Model VS-M/S-71 'Degei' - The next evolution of the Imbrium Lunokhod Industries Frame System, the Degei takes the lessons learned during the development of the VS-A-GR5K 'Krivlyaka' and applies the well loved stylings that made the VS-MX-04 'Rangi' and the VS-M/A-Z9A 'Muku' such a success. The Degei is a versatile assault frame perfect for space-based interdiction and other zero-g tactical operations.

 

From a design perspective, the frame fits perfectly into the 7P scale and aligns with the desired aesthetic. Unfortunately, the thigh joints that worked so well on the Krivlyaka were very fragile when paired with a stiff ankle joint. Additionally, the design of the shoulder joint didn’t add enough range of motion to justify the parts usage. Finally, the hip/waist connection was too loose, even with a friction pin which made it difficult to find stable footing.

If I was going to revise this build, I think I would start with the ankles. A looser and more scale-conventional joint (using a pneuma-T or tap) would probably work better in the long run.

This week in 1967, AS-500D configuration I testing ended with a special test to verify the flight control system. The test program included roll, pitch, yaw and longitudinal testing, completed earlier in 1967. AS-500D was a dynamic test article of the Saturn V space vehicle. Here, the Apollo spacecraft leaves the Manned Spacecraft Operations Building at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center on its way to the Vehicle Assembly Building where it will be mated with the Saturn launch vehicle. The Saturn V was designed at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center. Now through December 2022, NASA will mark the 50th anniversary of the Apollo Program that landed a dozen astronauts on the Moon between July 1969 and December 1972, and the first U.S. crewed mission -- Apollo 8 -- that circumnavigated the Moon in December 1968. The NASA History Program is responsible for generating, disseminating and preserving NASA's remarkable history and providing a comprehensive understanding of the institutional, cultural, social, political, economic, technological and scientific aspects of NASA 's activities in aeronautics and space.
