Musk Lorikeet

Glossopsitta concinna

Bird Overview: The Musk Lorikeet specialises in feeding on the nectar which is produced by flowering eucalypts, and sometimes also from the flowers of banksias and grevilleas. They collect nectar with their brush-shaped tongues. Musk Lorikeets are usually seen feeding in large noisy flocks in the canopy of eucalypts, often associating with other nectar-feeding birds, especially Rainbow Lorikeets and honeyeaters. The movements of Musk Lorikeets are often correlated with the flowering of trees, with birds appearing when the trees are in bloom, and leaving after the flowering has finished.

Identification: The Musk Lorikeet is a medium-sized, sturdy lorikeet, sometimes seen in large flocks when trees are flowering and often in mixed flocks with other parrots and other birds. They are active and noisy. This lorikeet is mostly green, with a yellow patch at the side of the breast. It has a bright red forehead and band through the eye to the ear coverts. The crown is blue, with females having less blue than males. In flight, brown flight feathers and the golden tail are revealed. Flight is fast and direct, with short angular wings and a medium-length, pointed to wedge-shaped tail.

Songs and Calls: The usual contact call is a shrill metallic screech, higher than the Rainbow Lorikeet, in flight and when perched. They constantly chatter when feeding.

Habitat: Musk Lorikeets are found in tall, open, dry forest and woodlands, dominated by eucalypts and are usually found in the canopy. They are also seen in suburban areas, parks and street trees. They roost or loaf in tall trees away from their feeding sites.

Behaviour: Musk Lorikeets are gregarious, often mixing with other parrots when feeding, including Scaly-breasted Lorikeets, Little Lorikeets and Swift Parrots.

Feeding: Musk Lorikeets feed in all levels of the canopy and are very active when foraging. They eat mainly pollen and nectar from eucalypts using their specialised brush-tipped tongues, but also eat seeds, fruits and insects and their larvae.

Breeding: Musk Lorikeets breed in hollow branches and holes in living eucalypts, often near watercourses. The entrance holes are usually very small, so they have to squeeze in. Eggs are laid on a base of chewed or decayed wood. The female incubate the eggs and both parents roost in the hollow at night.

What a treat to get to see George Thorogood last night.

I've been a huge fan of Georges since he came onto the scene in the mid 70's.

Since he's a local boy, I've had the opportunity to see him more times than I can count (lol...or remember!), but nobody can get my motor running like he can!!

Needless to say, I did not sit in seat too much! How can you not be up shakin' what you've got when you hear a song like "Move it On Over"?

Thank you in advance for all your faves and comments. I might answer several days later. And I might post other photos in the meantime.

Thanks for your faves and comments!

Many thanks for the visits, faves and comments. Cheers

Brown Falcon

Falco berigora

Description: Brown Falcons are small to medium-sized raptors (birds of prey). The female is larger than the male. The Brown Falcon has a range of plumage colours, from very dark brown to light brown above and off-white below. Generally, the upperparts are dark brown and the underparts are pale buff or cream. The sides of the head are brown with a characteristic tear-stripe below the eye. Birds from the tropical north are very dark, with a paler face and undertail, while those from central Australia are paler all over. Younger birds resemble dark adults, but have less obvious barring on the tail, and a buff-yellow colour on the face, throat and nape of the neck.

Similar species: Paler birds may often be confused with a related raptor (bird of prey), the Nankeen Kestrel, F. cenchroides, which is quite a bit smaller and has a more rufous crown. Dark Brown Falcons may be mistaken for slightly larger Black Falcon, F. subniger. The Black Falcon has longer legs and lacks barring on the tail. The Black Falcon also appears sleeker in shape and movements.

Distribution: The Brown Falcon ranges throughout Australia, and north to New Guinea.

Habitat: The Brown Falcon is found in all but the densest forests and is locally common throughout its range. The preferred habitat is open grassland and agricultural areas, with scattered trees or structures such as telegraph poles which it uses for perching. Around outback towns, the birds become quite tame and will allow quite close approach. Birds may stay within the same areas throughout the year or may move around locally in response to changes in conditions. Paler birds are usually associated with inland areas, but all the colour varieties are fairly scattered throughout the range.

Feeding: Brown Falcons are usually seen alone, searching for food from an exposed perch. When prey is sighted, the bird swoops down and grasps it in its claws (talons), killing the prey with a bite to the spine. The powerful bill has specialised 'tomial' teeth and matching notches for this purpose. Less often the species will hunt by hovering or gliding over the ground, often at great heights. Brown Falcons feed on small mammals, insects, reptiles and, less often, small birds.

Breeding: The nest used by the Brown Falcon is normally an old nest from another hawk species, but the species may build its own stick nest in a tree. Occasionally birds nest in open tree hollows. Both sexes share the incubation of the eggs, and both care for the young, although the female performs the bulk of these duties, while the male supplies most of the food.

Calls: Normally silent at rest, but gives some cackling and screeching notes when in flight.

Minimum Size: 41cm

Maximum Size: 51cm

Average size: 46cm

Average weight: 530g

Breeding season: June to November in the south; November to April in the north.

Clutch Size: 2 to 6 (usually 3)

Incubation: 30 days

Nestling Period: 45 days

Deliberately kept the UV filter so that I get a reflection effect on the crow. Have used that reflection to give a glowing effect on the crow. Reflection even has the shades of the tree leaves.

On a close look, you can even see the reflection of sun rays on the crow.

Looked a little different to my eyes. Awaiting your comments and advises.

Known since the roman colonization for its water donors (the remains of roman thermal baths ruins), the ancient Rubiacum born Saint-Mars in the Sixth century and then to establish its first religious community in the Viith century. The legend tells of a young blind native of Great Britain, made the journey to Auvergne in order to meet with the bishop of Clermont, Bonetus (also known under the name of Saint-Bonnet, who died in 710). Enabling him to retrieve the view, they asked him in exchange to found a monastery for women. Building a chapel on the site of the current church, the community and was replaced in the Ninth century by a colony of benedictine monks. These were at the origin of the construction of the old romanesque church. Built in the romanesque period and then changed to defensive purposes at the beginning of the Thirteenth century, the church Saint-Léger is a unique model in a Auvergne is dominated by the buildings of the romanesque and gothic styles. Even if we find a few examples of this type in the region (such as the building of the battlements of the cathedral of le Puy-en-Velay, the tower Clementine in La Chaise-Dieu and of the battlements on the north wall of the church of Montet (03)), it is mostly in the Languedoc and in Provence that one is accustomed to see this kind of monuments (the cathedrals of Beziers and of Maguelone, the church of Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer...). To find the origin of these additions, quasi-military, as are the machicolations and battlements, it is necessary to seek a response element in the conflict which opposed the monks of the abbey of Mozac in the count of Auvergne, Guy II (d. 1224). Wanting to protect against a possible surprise attack, the monks began the construction of a defensive system making the tour of the building. Keeping only the low windows, and the cord of billet which overcomes, they removed most of the decorative elements (cornice modillions), as well as the roof.

Mantendo apenas a baixa do windows, e o fio do boleto que vence, eles removeram a maioria dos elementos decorativos (cornija modillions), bem como o telhado.

Splendid Fairy-wren

Scientific Name: Malurus splendens

Description: The breeding plumage of the male is predominantly blue, varying from cobalt-blue in the east of its range to violet-blue in the west.It has black bands at the base of the tail (absent in the violet-blue birds), across the breast and from the beak, through the eyes to join a band across the back of its neck. Its crown and cheek patches are paler blue. Wings and long tail are brown with a blue wash. His beak is black and his legs and feet are brown-grey. In non-breeding plumage, called eclipse, he is very similar to the female, being pale brown above and buff to white underneath although he retains the blue wash on wings and tail. The female does not have the blue wash on her wings, but does have a reddish-tan line from beak to eye that extends into a ring around her eye. Her beak is reddish-tan.

Similar species: The male in breeding plumage is quite distinct but in eclipse he is similar to the males of other fairy-wrens in eclipse. A faint wash of blue on male wings during eclipse distinguishes this species from others. The female is similar to females of other fairy-wren species, but has a bluer tail than most.

Distribution: These birds are widely distributed across Australia in two areas. One area is from about Shark Bay south through WA, through SA except the coast to about the Flinders Ranges and the southern and central parts of NT. The eastern area include SA from the Flinders Ranges, the far north-western tip of Vic, NSW east to about Moree and Balranald and south central Qld.

Habitat: These birds live in arid to semi-arid areas, in mostly dense shrublands or woodlands of acacia, and mallee eucalypt with dense shrubs.

Seasonal movements: These birds are mostly sedentary, defending a territory all year, but the younger females may disperse to another territory. In some areas they are semi-nomadic, depending on local conditions.

Feeding: Like most of the fairy-wrens, Splendid Fairy-wrens eat mostly insects and forage on both the ground and in shrubs. They live in groups which forage together.

Breeding: The Splendid Fairy-wren female builds an oval domed nest of dry grass, strips of bark and rootlets, with an entrance two thirds of the way up one side. The female is the only member of the group to incubate the eggs, but all members of the group feed the chicks.

Calls: A rapid series of slightly metallic, high-pitched pips that blend into an "undulating" call.

Minimum Size: 12cm

Maximum Size: 14cm

Average size: 13cm

Average weight: 9g

Breeding season: mostly September-December, but can extend from August to April

Clutch Size: 2 to 4, mostly 3

Incubation: 15 days

Nestling Period: 11 days

Australasian Darter

Anhinga novaehollandiae

Anhingidae

Description: The Darter is a large, slim water bird with a long snake-like neck, sharp pointed bill, and long, rounded tail. Male birds are dark brownish black with glossy black upperwings, streaked and spotted white, silver-grey and brown. The strongly kinked neck has a white or pale brown stripe from the bill to where the neck kinks and the breast is chestnut brown. Females and immatures are grey-brown above, pale grey to white below, with a white neck stripe that is less distinct in young birds. The Darter is often seen swimming with only the snake-like neck visible above the water, or drying its wings while perched on a tree or stump over water. While its gait is clumsy on land, it can soar gracefully to great heights on thermals, gliding from updraft to updraft. It has a cross-shaped silhouette when flying.

Distribution: In Australia, the Darter is found from Adelaide, South Australia, to Tennant Creek, Northern Territory and then to Broome, Western Australia. it is also found in south-western Australia, from Perth to Esperance. Worldwide, it has been thought of as one of two mainAnhinga species (the other, A. anhinga, is found in North America), found in the southern half of Africa, Madagascar, Iraq, Pakistan, India, south-east Asia, Indonesia and New Guinea. However, A. melanogaster is now considered to be further divided into three species, with rufa being found in Africa, melanogaster in south Asia and novaehollandiae in New Guinea and Australia (the Australasian Darter).

Habitat: The Darter is found in wetlands and sheltered coastal waters, mainly in the Tropics and Subtropics. It prefers smooth, open waters, for feeding, with tree trunks, branches, stumps or posts fringing the water, for resting and drying its wings. Most often seen inland, around permanent and temporary water bodies at least half a metre deep, but may be seen in calm seas near shore, fishing. The Darter is not affected by salinity or murky waters, but does require waters with sparse vegetation that allow it to swim and dive easily. It builds its nests in trees standing in water, and will move to deeper waters if the waters begin to dry up.

Feeding: The Darter catches fish with its sharp bill partly open while diving in water deeper than 60 cm. The fish is pierced from underneath, flicked onto the water's surface and then swallowed head first. Smaller items are eaten underwater and large items may be carried to a convenient perch and then swallowed. Insects and other aquatic animals, including tortoises, may also be eaten, as well as some vegetable matter. In hot weather, adult birds may pour water from their bills into the gullets of their young chicks when they are still in the nest.

Breeding: The Darter is usually a solitary bird, forming pairs only while breeding. Breeding is erratic, happening whenever water levels and food supplies are suitable, but most often occurs in spring and summer. Nests are usually solitary, but Darters may nest within loose colonies with other water birds that nest in trees, such as cormorants, spoonbills and ibis. The male decorates a nest-site with green leafy twigs and displays to attract a mate, with elaborate wing-waving and twig-grasping movements. The male carries most of the nest material to the nest-site, which is normally in the fork of a tree standing in water, usually about 3.5 m above the water's surface. Both sexes complete the nest, incubate the eggs and raise the young. Chicks are kept warm by brooding continously (or cooled down by shading with spread wings) for up to a week after hatching and both adults stay in the nest with the chicks overnight. In hot weather, the adults will even shake water over the chicks after a swim. Chicks can swim after about four weeks in the nest and start to fly at about 50 days.

Not been posting much lately. Lots going on. My unit is health hazzard and I have been contacting a myriad of different places to try and escape it.

No human should have to fight like this for health matters.

I am going to be on TV. It got quite emotional I am sorry.

I found this fella today to make some images with. He was not wanting to make photos but we got there.

I have also been getting a few random attacks when trying to stand up for myself abut my house also was being threatened by a resident where I live until I decided enough is enough now I think he knows next time I will fight and pretty typical he has shut his mouth.

I do not want to live that way. Anxiety causes me physical pain though so I have to nip it in the butt.

Police are a toothless tiger especially when they chose to side with the bully.

I used to respect Police.

At this point I am not looking forward to Christmas but I also want no pitty invites.

A portrait image of a Beautiful Badge Huntsman - His Binomial name is Neosparassus calligaster.

They are dubbed the Badge huntsman because they have a very cool looking badge pattern on their underside.

And in this species it is pretty special to view. Even some blue there which is highly reactive to UV light (fluorescent) !

I am getting better with identifying and noticing them now due to the dome shaped carapace. It is amazing the little subtle differences between them all and I enjoy learning about them.

My education is never complete.

He was hunting on the fence in my garden so I decided he needed a portrait image taken.

Unless stated , always alive and unharmed subjects.

The lens set to the maximum 2:1 magnification for this and in post after stacking I decided to use a 5:4 ratio portrait crop to loose the sides.

I used 3 methods in Helicon Soft Helicon Focus , A, C , B (depth Map ) Once they provided me a 16 bit tiff file for each I reopened them in Helicon again and Used Method B (Depth Map) to assemble them.

It may seem like a lot but it is not much effort for sometimes a little extra detail.
