How long will you wait for the weather to improve before you give up and go home? I almost went home to soon when I recently visited Rippon Tor on Dartmoor. The weather was showing no sign of improving until this shot suddenly presented itself to me. Read the full story behind this image and see the other image I captured by reading my blog: Rippon Tor

A dull day and no woodpeckers in sight so took a pic of their kingdom instead.

Rain is an uncommon event in Arizona dessert. On the first day of our trip there, in rained for about 36 hours straight causing our photo tour through the incredible Lower Antelope Canyon to be pushed to the next day and then a few more hours for the staff to make the hike suitable. What resulted was two days worth of tours crammed into one half-day's time. While the canyon was overrun with masses of humanity, the previous day's rain washed away the dust leaving vibrant colors and a lack of blowing sand (to the benefit of the cameras). A unique place, glad to have visited, but crazy experience. Enjoy!

Captured these gulls attempting to land at the top of a tree beside the lake in the Royal Botanical Gardens, Kew.

The amazing blue sky background was entirely due to the use of a circular polarizer much to my own surprise.

Skradinski Buk waterfall in Krka national park, Croatia.

This panorama is composed from 15 images (5 brackets of 3 images each). I combined these into an HDR Pano using Lightroom, and processed the resulting RAW file (dng) in AuroraHDR, made some slight adjustments in Luminar (a first for me), cropped the image in half so I could save it (currently Skylum tools limit export to images less than 15000 pixels wide, so 25000 was too much) - but this was easily automatically combined using Photoshop's built in loading into stack script, where I added some sharpening using Lumenzia, some final touch up, and here it is.

Unfortunately being such high resolution, it isn't possible to convey the detail on social media. The 20,000 pixel cropped result is 100x the pixel count currently supported by Facebook/Flickr, meaning only 1 in 100 pixels make it to the output image - this means any output sharpening can only be a token effort because entire chunks of detail were lost in the downsizing. I already struggle with a 50MP pixel camera when I fill the frame and want to convey the detail I've captured on social media - already a struggle retaining just 1 in 16 pixels, but this really is an illustration of how current social media platforms prevent sharing of the detail in images.

In restrospect, HDR was not really needed here - I'd come down the valley and composed the shot using a telephoto lens allowing me to crop out the sun which was spreading light onto foliage a bit above this scene, so even my brightest exposure is not overexposed, meaning I likely gain no useful information from the darker exposures. I still use the extended data if I have it, regardless of whether it provides any benefit.

Another shot from this mornings trip to Tynemouth,

I wasn't sure about this one as I left allot of the sky out but at second glance I really like it.

I am quite proud to say this is pretty much straight off camera apart from a small amount of sharpening on the rocks and a border :-)

The gates mark the boundary between the formal gardens and the perimeter pathway around Lauriston Castle in Edinburgh. In the distance can be seen Cramond Island in the Forth estuary and, beyond, the hills of Fife.

Just as soon as the beautiful cherry blossoms bloomed, a strong wind assisted them in their departure.

As we visited Santa Barbara, I would wake up prior to dawn and walk along the Pacific Ocean Beach. Occasionally, I would find something interesting, such as this remnant, which had a striking red tint compared with the seas behind. I recall taking a bunch of shots, just to get the timing of the wave just right. I somewhat regretted leaving the tripod back at our rental, but all turned ok enough! Enjoy!

This small 7 meters waterfall is situated on the river bed of Mesa Potamos at an altitude of ~ 1000m, northwest of Saitas at Cyprus’ Troodos Mountains. The rocks comprise mainly of gabbro.

I took the shot a few weeks ago, using my Nikon D750 and Nikon 24-70 f/2.8 @ f/11. Exposure for 13 seconds using Lee’s 10 ND filter (big stopper), plus Lee’s circular polarizer filter to minimise reflections. Some minor adjustments in LR and PS.

California Bay Laurel (Bay Leaf) and Western Sword Fern.

“In the absence of fire, leaf litter has been deposited in great quantities, and the soil has become rich and deep. Live oaks and bay laurels have gradually moved into the chaparral areas to shade out the chamise and manzanitas. This plant succession is a natural part of the evolution of California's landscape.”

Part 2 of my big photography adventure to Lake District will be going live on YouTube tomorrow (22/11) at 6pm. In the meantime here is an image of that rather famous tree on Lake Buttermere that I showed you in part 1. Near Conway Summit, Eastern Sierra Mountains. This one made Explore!

I went outside Sunday morning and saw a nice fresh coat of new fallen snow sticking to all the trees. Since I'm not a big fan of shooting frozen waterfalls, I figured I'd take a chance and drive up to the North Chagrin Reservation and check out Squires Castle. Upon arriving, I saw there was even more snow sticking to everything than we had back home. It was indeed a Winter Wonderland. The castle was built in the 1890s by Feargus B. Squire for use as the gatekeeper's house for his future country estate, which was never built. Squire, a founder of Standard Oil Company, bought the surrounding 525 acres of land but never completed the project. Squire sold the property in 1922 and the Cleveland Metroparks acquired it in 1925. Despite managing to capture this image of Brentor Church on Dartmoor, not all went well on my most recent visit. Fortunately I had a friend along with me to keep the laughs going, but the cold soon got the better of my creativity. Another composition from my trip to the Blackwater Falls State Park in West Virginia.

Calm waters were not expected but they did allow for some unique waveless images on the rocky headland at Coldwater Cove.

Solitary and silent there she (he) was grooming itself on an early morning backlight… and these are the last of my “silent white series”. Well, at this point I think already you’re all “burping white feathers” *lol... but, I’m uploading these to show some details of hers (him) gracious long head plumes. :-D

*I’m receiving many emails asking for details about this series, so plz read some technical details here. thanks!

This one I had sitting in my outbox for so long and never posted it so finally put it in my "rejects" folder and forgot about it. A few days ago when I was archiving photos from one drive to another I came across it and reconsidered. ;)

These red barns caught my attention while on vacation out West last September.

I was told about this location last year and went to shoot it but the field had been cut down. I'll try for a morning shoot this year before it gets cut again.

Went back to Albion Falls today in very contrasty light so decided to try my yellow/blue cokin filter to change it up a bit to try for some ribbons of colour.

I shot two different perspectives here as I was unable to decide which I liked best. When I was at home looking at the photos, it dawned on me that I didn't have to choose! I decided to use both shots stitched together to make this panoramic image.

Shot using my Pentax K1, HD Pentax-D FA 28-105mm F3.5-5.6 ED DC WR lens, and a Promaster HGX CPL filter.

Is this image of Venford Falls better than the image I took last year? With another 12 months of photography experience under my belt I hoped I could improve on the portfolio image I took last year. As I soon found out though, it wouldn't be that easy! Read more about my visit to Venford Falls on my blog at: julianbaird.me
