Puy de Dome et Puy de Come

1st October 2010 - I've always seen this on the street's of Sydney, and have always been amazed by it. It's kind of like guerrilla art, or something as urban as Banksy's work (a big stretch I know, but it reminds me of it), and I think it's pretty cool.

I just so happen to have my camera with me, so I decided to take a shot.

An old wedding photograph sits in the window of a derelict building behind a steel grate near Central Square in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The wedding party, protected from the viewer both physically and temporally, is free to return our stares. The steel grate is reflected in the sky of the wedding photograph itself, adding a strange and ominous tone to the otherwise cheery image.

The "2015" date is wrong.

A bollard and chains on the HarborWalk beside Boston Harbor, here at Christopher Columbus Park.

I have no idea who picked the daisies or made the chain. It was hanging over the bench when I got there. I just loved the softness of the flowers and the texture of the wood.

Appears in the Love it to Bits Gallery.

It is a mistake to try to look too far ahead. The chain of destiny can only be grasped one link at a time. ~~ Winston Churchill

The chain pictured here was seen at the site of Big Brutus, a giant electric shovel in retirement as a tourist site near West Mineral, Kansas. Each link of this chain must be four to five inches across, and quite heavy. Added texture: www.flickr.com/photos/skeletalmess/3230637861/ by skeletal mess.

A unique pair of customizable earrings.

Each earring is approximately 3.5” long (though length will vary somewhat depending on the letter chosen). Earwires are stainless steel. All other metals are silver-plated.

Also known as the "Venice of Hong Kong", Tai O is also a hot tourist spot for both foreigners and residents of other parts of Hong Kong, despite damage by a fire in July 2000. The pang uk, a kind of stilt house, built right over the waterway are still quite scenic. A rope bridge tended by local women used to be quite popular with visitors, but it has been replaced with a steel pedestrian bridge.

Spanning the Danube between Clark Ádám tér (Buda side) and Széchenyi István tér (Pest side), the Chain Bridge (Lánchid) was the first to permanently connect Buda and Pest. There has been a pontoon bridge on the river since the Middle Ages enabling passage from spring to autumn. During winter, the river froze making crossing possible; however, there were times when the weather changed abruptly and people got stuck on one side. In 1820, this happened to Count István Széchenyi, when he had to wait a week to get to his father's funeral. This experience led him to decide that a permanent bridge had to be built. He became a major advocate of the project and founded a society to finance and build the bridge.

At the time of its construction, Chain Bridge was considered to be one of the wonders of the world. Chief engineer Adam Clark, a master builder from Scotland, completed the span in 1849. Legend has it that he was so proud of his masterpiece he would challenge anyone to find any fault with his work. When it was discovered that the lions at either ends of the bridge didn't have tongues, he was so ashamed that he committed suicide. This of course is only an anecdote. The tunnel, which was built a few years later, is also the work of Adam Clark. By the way, the lions do have tongues; however, they are not visible from the street below. During World War II, the bridge was damaged and its rebuilding was completed in 1949.

It is an interesting detail that the bridge's designer was an English engineer named William Clark, who had no relation to the Scottish engineer, Adam Clark, the builder of the bridge. The Chain Bridge is a suspension bridge, and it's a large scale version of William Clark's earlier Marlow Bridge on the River Thames in Marlow, England.

This man was working at the site of a new habitat for red pandas. The entire building was covered with white plastic sheeting. I was told that this chain saw work was part of the process of creating a rock-like appearance for the outside of the building.

It's going to be fun to see what it looks like in the end!
