The Széchenyi Chain Bridge is a chain bridge that spans the River Danube between Buda and Pest, the western and eastern sides of Budapest, the capital of Hungary. Designed by English engineer William Tierney Clark and built by Scottish engineer Adam Clark, it was the first permanent bridge across the Danube in Hungary. It was opened in 1849. It is anchored on the Pest side of the river to Széchenyi (formerly Roosevelt) Square, adjacent to the Gresham Palace and the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, and on the Buda side to Adam Clark Square, near the Zero Kilometre Stone and the lower end of the Castle Hill Funicular, leading to Buda Castle.

The bridge has the name of István Széchenyi, a major supporter of its construction, attached to it, but is most commonly known as the "Chain Bridge". At the time of its construction, it was regarded as one of the modern world's engineering wonders. It has asserted an enormous significance in the country's economic, social and cultural life, much as the Brooklyn Bridge has in New York and the US. Its decorations made of cast iron, and its construction, radiating calm dignity and balance, have elevated the Chain Bridge to a high stature in Europe.

It became a symbol of advancement, national awakening, and the linkage between East and West.

Chain running over 3 teeth of the rear cassette on my road bicycle. The red to the top right is a bit of one of the chainstays (the bike is red). Photographed in strong sunlight. Scene was around 3 inches before the crop, estimated at 2.75.

Bokeh bike chain. Experimenting with the 80mm macro lens. I like this lens. I just got it and it's a fun lens to work with and I'm still learning to use this macro lens. #bokeh #BikeChain #macro

"Chains"

With her wine-stained lips, yeah, she nothing but trouble

Cold to the touch but she's warm as a devil

I gave her my heart but she wanted my soul

She takes 'til I break and I can't get more

You got me in chains, you got me in chains for your love

But I wouldn't change, no, I wouldn't change this love

You got me in chains, you got me in chains for your love

But I wouldn't change, no, I wouldn't change this love

Tryna break the chains but the chains only break me

(Hey-ey-ey-ey, hey-ey-ey-ey, hey-ey-ey-ey, hey-ey-ey-ey)

Tryna break the chains but the chains only break me

Alone in the night 'til she knocks on my door

Oh no, wasted again but I can't say no (no)

Baby tell me why, why you do, do me wrong

Baby tell me why, why you do, do me wrong

Gave you my heart but you took my soul

You got me in chains, you got me in chains for your love

But I wouldn't change, no, I wouldn't change this love

You got me in chains, you got me in chains for your love

But I wouldn't change, no, I wouldn't change this love

Tryna break the chains but the chains only break me

(Hey-ey-ey-ey, hey-ey-ey-ey, hey-ey-ey-ey, hey-ey-ey-ey)

Tryna break the chains but the chains only break me

I am adding this a little late into the posting but time was taken from me unexpectedly earlier… I wished to relate what spoke to me when I came across these beauties. When I walked upon the scene I saw the flowers first ..then the chains that held them all together. The correlation for me was the beauty in the softness of the petals the flourishing while being held close by the strength of the chains. No restrictions but more like loving boundaries, shelter, guidelines yet freedom to grow to express….someone loving you enough to say .. This is where I need you .. I wish you close. They also, spoke to me of a deep relationship, a trust that some can never understand, a bond that transcends. Smiles … that is just me.. The beauty is in the eye of the beholder ..we all know that!!!

Not quite golden, but yellow painted thick chains strung across bollards at the end of a carpark at the rear of a business premises.

One of the 2 house sparrows that was part of a local gang that came to shake me down for some french fries... He got his fries, but little did he know I got his image and he isn't going to get away with this for much longer.

Pietrosu's peak is the tallest mountain peak in the Rodna Mountains with 2,303 metrimeters. It is also the highest peak in the entire chain of the Eastern Carpathians, being divided between Maramureș and Bistrița Năsăud counties.

Not all chains are truthful.

Some speak lies, and

Would have us believe

They will save us.

It's for our pleasure, our good.

In the end...

They remain chains.

Enslaving us.

The chary, and the unwary.

Each in turn

Bound tightly by the lies.

And, the playground is empty,

Swings hang impotent,

As innocence dies

In a hailstorm of deception and fear

" Être libre ce n'est pas seulement se débarrasser de ses chaînes; c'est vivre d'une façon qui respecte et renforce la liberté des autres".

"To be free is not just to throw off your chains; it is to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others".

To laugh is to risk appearing a fool.

To weep is to risk appearing sentimental.

To reach out for another is to risk involvement.

To expose feelings is to risk revealing your true self.

Only a person who risks is free

Are the chains of fear preventing you from taking

a necessary risk?

The last of my trio of abstract decaying farm machinery photos, taken in rural Co. Mayo, Ireland.

I have been wanting to shoot the chains that are sometimes used on our bay doors at my workplace.

The Chain Bridge was the first permanent stone-bridge connecting Pest and Buda, and only the second permanent crossing on the whole length of the river Danube. The inauguration of the Chain Bridge took place on 20 November 1849.

At the end of World War II, retreating German troops blew up all bridges of Budapest, among them also the Chain Bridge on 18 January 1945. The bridge was destroyed nearly completely, only its pillars remained intact. The decision to rebuild it was made in the spring of 1947. The inhabitants of Budapest were finally able to repossess one of the most renowned buildings of the city on 20 November 1949, exactly hundred years after its initial inauguration.

This summer we had two young visitors from NZ, and one day I took them to Thonon-les-Bains for the day; to thank me they gave me this pretty ceramic heart they found in an antique shop.
