Given frequent and sophisticated attacks on financial institutions, how can governments improve cyber-resilience and financial stability while reducing the threat of a cyber-attack contagion? Join us to learn how the IMF brings experts, policymakers and the private sector together to help financial supervisors in developing economies undertake better quality regulation and supervision of cyber risk. IFRC has opened its first Ebola treatment centre in Kenema, Sierra Leone. At full capacity, the centre will hold 60 patients. It is currently staffed by 80 nationals and 19 expats. That number will rise as the operation expands. The centre is expected to be open for 9 to 12 months..

Staff must wear personal protective equipment when entering the high risk zone which contains infected patients, in order to protect themselves from Ebola. .

Its first patients were 5 people from the capital of Freetown, four men and an 11 year old girl.

The idea of the halftrack, which combined the capacity and speed of a truck with the mobility of a tank, gained favor with several armies in the 1930s, namely Germany and the United States. In 1938, the US Army contracted with the White Motor Company to convert one of its M3 Scout Cars (known better as the "White Scout Car") to a halftrack. Results were not all that favorable, and the Army went back to the drawing board. A purpose-built halftrack by Firestone, the M2, was better and put into production, but the Army felt the M2 was too short. White was once more approached about a lengthened version of the M2, designated M3. The Army was finally satisfied with the result and ordered it into production in 1940.

As the United States was likely to enter World War II at some point, the M3 used as many commercially available parts as possible, including its drivetrain and engine. The M3 had good road speed (up to 45 mph), could carry a squad of troops or nine tons of cargo, and was reliable, aside from issues with the track sprockets, which were quickly rectified in the field. Though by no means meant to engage in pitched battle, the M3 was given adequate armament in the form of a pintle-mounted M2HB .50 caliber machine gun, and provision for two smaller M1919 .30 caliber machine guns attached to the rear deck. Space was at a premium, but lockers were installed beneath the infantry seating for ammunition and equipment.

One thing that the M3 was not was armored. Though it did have some armor, the vehicle did not stop bullets above rifle caliber, if that. After the debacle at Kasserine Pass in February 1943, the M3 got the derisive nickname "Purple Heart Box." In the movie "Patton," General Omar Bradley (played by Karl Malden) relates that he asked a soldier if German machine gun bullets went straight through the M3. The soldier replied that they did not--they went through one side and "rattled around." Though it was not Bradley who actually related this story to Patton (in real life, Bradley correctly reflected that the M3 had been poorly used by untrained troops at Kasserine), it was true. The fighting compartment was also open-topped, which left it vulnerable to the cold of winter and the heat of a grenade.

That aside, the M3 overcame its detractors and turned out to be one of the war-winners for the Allies. Over 65,000 would be built by White Motors, Autocar, Diamond T and International Harvester, and were adapted in to several dozen different variants, namely antitank gun carriers and mobile antiaircraft guns. As the former (the T12 and T30), the M3 left a lot to be desired, but as the latter (M16 and M15A1), the M3 was superb--even if it ended up being used more in the antipersonnel role than against Axis aircraft. Many were supplied to the United Kingdom and the Soviet Union; the latter liked their M3s so much that they built their own version, which formed the basis for the BTR series used to modern times.

With so many halftracks produced, it was inevitable that they would be passed on to other armies and used after the war. Israel in particular loved the M3, and produced their own variants; IDF M3s were used as late as the 1973 Yom Kippur War. Several hundred still exist, and many are still operable.

This M3A1 serves as something of a "gate guard" for the Miracle of America Museum just east of Polson, Montana. It shows some wear and tear and rust, the product of sitting outside in Montana winters, but otherwise is pretty intact, complete with a M2 .50 caliber machine gun.

Though some of the Miracle of America's collection resembles a junkyard, it is still very much worth a stop, even with the modest entrance fee. The museum is a bit kitsch, but they have an excellent collection of militaria from around the world, as well as probably the largest motorcycle collection in the Pacific Northwest. The interior displays are very well-maintained; the outside displays are hit and miss, but still worth a look.

MLL 742 is an AEC 4RF4 BEA Airport Coach built in 1853. It was withdrawn in June 1963 after sustaining accident damage and has now spent over 50 years at this scrapyard.

Probably one of the busiest stops along the old Northwestern Elevated, Belmont is busy on this day, even during non-peak hours, as track work north of the station created a flood of trains coming in and out. Here are Red Line #812 and Brown Line #407 boarding at Belmont. Following an enormous increase of riders in the last few decades, this stop and Fullerton underwent a major reconstruction project that increased capacity and realigned the tracks.

A prototype high capacity wagon was built by Powell Duffryn in 1993; designated "Supercube" RGL96600 had a central lifting bed to allow greater capacity, sliding cover allowing easy access for loading. Fitted with Y25 fabricated bogies, P5 tyre profiles and had a nominal 52 tonne load capacity. During its acceptance tests in September 1993 there were problems with the underframe structure. Modifications were followed by repeat tests in October 1994 however no more wagons were built to this design. The prototype wagon then languished at the RTC for many years, being used by DM&EE and subsequently Serco for storage of test weights.

This is a high capacity version of the venerable Mauser HSc (for Hahn Selbstspanner ("self-cocking hammer") Pistole, third and final design "C".) Production of the original began as World War II was breaking out in 1940. This is actually a licensed copy made for Italian police by Renato Gamba SpA. in Gardone. It has a 13-shot, double stack magazine, double action trigger and exposed, semi-shrouded hammer.

As this was likely a low-bid piece, Gamba cut a few corners. The wedge-shaped section of metal traditionally placed in front of the trigger guard on HSc's was omitted and the grips, typically polished wood, are plastic.

This was one of a few hundred surplus pistols imported a couple of years back. They came with one magazine and it's been impossible to find a spare. I did find a 10-rounder on an online gun auction, but it looked like total junk in the pictures. Definitely not worth the scalper's price the seller was asking!

Members of the Sony RX100M3 group have been discussing the weight capacity of the Jellyfish tripod & micro ball head which are each rated at 9 oz.

Here you see them supporting 18 oz. (Canon Powershot stacked on top of RX100M3) This does require tightening the tension screw on the bottom*, or the legs will splay until the tension screw reaches the surface and turns the tripod into a 4 point support. I tried putting two pounds (the capacity of the scale in the photo) on each leg (total six pounds) and two pounds sideways on the ball head. I detected no signs of stress by eyeball or touch. (Hardly accurate but good enough to satisfy me.)

I wouldn't use it on the edge of a six story parking structure; but I think the 9 oz. rating is conservative.

*Any U.S. coin between a quarter and a penny can tighten the tripod screw. A jewelers screwdriver is required to tighten the micro ball-joint screw,

Construction of the 80,000 capacity Olympic Stadium began in March 2008 and was completed in March 2011. The Olympic Stadium was located on an 'island' site, surrounded by waterways on three sides, and spectators reached the venue using five bridges.

The top ring of the Stadium was built using surplus gas supply pipes, an example of London 2012's efforts to re-use and recycle. To meet high-definition TV requirements for the Games, the Stadium was lit by 532 individual floodlights housed in 14 towers, each 28m high.

Following on from the previous offering, this was my first encounter with 3x2 seated buses. DXD 42C joined the Stonier's fleet in the early '70s. It was an AEC Reliance 590 with Plaxton Highway bodywork which had been new to Luton Airport and for which duties the saloon was kitted out with 61 bus seats and a luggage pen. Overall length was the then legal maximum of 36ft or 11metres in modern speak. Following service in Bedfordshire the bus moved north to Rugeley and Wieldon's 'Green Bus Service' where I gather it wasn't a popular bus. After moving to Stonier's it's capacity was appreciated but once again 'DXD' was not popular with crews, particularly conductors, who found it's necessarily narrow gangway problematic. Withdrawal came circa 1976 after what was believed to be an attempt to sabotage the engine, the bus then being traded in against two four year old ex Maidstone Borough Leyland Atlanteans.

This picture was taken as the bus was awoken for my photograph by foreman Amby Smith prior to my starting work there ... I was still at school in 1976.

And a half-time pep talk from a steward who told me I couldn't take photographs 'for copyright reasons'. Hmmm. It's 2011. People have mobile phones with cameras don't they ? So why irritate people in this way when they've paid good money for such poor sporting skills and entertainment...

I think it’s only fair to say what happened next : I emailed the Chief Executive of Leyton Orient and received a very prompt reply including the lines “However, it appears on this occasion that the steward in question was a little over-zealous in his interpretation of the rules as it doesn’t sound like you intended using the images for any commercial gain! I have copied our Chief Safety Officer Zoe Young in on this response and Zoe will remind the stewards at the next briefing that cameras for personal use are fine within the stadium“

Iron Maiden played to a capacity crowd at Austin 360 Amphitheater. Tuesday, September 10, 2013. it was a hot-Texsa night and the rain from earlier in the afternoon made it a hot-muggy-Texas night. Iron Maiden raised the temperature levels with the use of pyrotechnics from the very first beat of the show. And even though we were warned it was going to happen, it was still soul shaking. The night begins with the mammoth Austin 360 Amphitheater speakers playing a recording of Iron Maiden's "Doctor Doctor." This, Maiden fans know, is a signal that the show is getting close to starting. Anticipation rises and pumping fists begin to fill the Austin 360 Amphitheater skyline. At the end of "Doctor Doctor" house lights go down pyrotechnics go up and it's game on. As the stage is illuminated, a stage resembling a huge iceberg is revealed, referencing 1988's "Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son" album cover. From the beginning it was none stage, Bruce Dickinson moving around the stage on two levels. Dickinson's voice has held up well and could even be referred to as spot on. The band was dynamic in every way, total control of their instruments and moving about giving maiden fans at either end of the stage a great plenty of chances to make eye contact. Bruce Dickinson did not fly the band into Texas on Ed Force One for this tour. The tour is consists of just a few North American dates, a few in Mexico and wraps up in South America.
