Our last visit was to the village of Chiriri about half an hour out of Bukavu. We were coming to look at the source that had been established to provide clean water to four or five villages. The ambassador who had by now had quite enough of journalists managed to misdirect a couple away. He did not however get away from the traditional fermented banana beer toast. The ambassador was torn between conflicting beliefs; traditional values and fastidious hygiene. (multiple values)
A fishing boat heads back towards port about 15 miles from Sitka Alaska as it is passing St. Lazaria Island, a wildlife preserve west of Sitka. Many fishing vessels anchor on the leeward side of the island to spend the night, saving fuel for their return to the fishing areas each day.
Let me tell you, it is exciting to try to capture an image like this without burning out your eyeball, while bouncing up and down in 6-9 foot swells, trying to get focus locked and your subject in the viewfinder using a 300mm f/2.8L with a 2x telextender on a Canon 7D (equivalent to a 960mm lens!).

A small roadside substation along US 83 south of Washburn. It seems this replaced another substation that was closer to the river, as the "41.6kV" line coming towards the right picks up the outgoing 12.5kV circuit from the substation and then heads for the river.
A Kirtan Singer performing in front of the idols and the chariot at the fair ground during 'Rath Yatra' festival
Kirtan (devotional singing) is a spiritual practice coming from India, particularly Bengal. Literally translated as “celebrating, praising, glorifying”. Kirtan is not about artistic achievement and perfection but rather about reaching a meditative or ecstatic state of mind.
Kirtan is generally practiced as call-and-response – a lead singer chanting a line which then is repeated by the rest of the group. The songs as such are mostly relatively simply structured and repetitive, usually starting slowly and then building in pace and intensity. Kirtans are usually sung in groups.

The 'Rath Yatra' or Festival of Chariots is one of the greatest festivals annually observed all over India. The festival, however, originated in Jagannath Puri on the eastern coast of the state of Orissa, India. The festival is associated with Lord Jagannath and commemorates his annual journey to his aunt's residence along with his brother and sister.
The symbolic movement of the chariot of Jagannath is celebrated with much fanfare. The idols are brought back after a week in the chariot in the festival of 'Ulto Ratha' (reversed Ratha). The week is synonymous with numerous fairs ('Rather Mela').

After coming down from the tree, the bear cam through these branches and into the clearing where I was standing. A nervous and exciting moment.

We been so long waiting
For the all time high
We got a damn good reason
To put your troubles aside
And all your winter sorrows hang ‘em out to dry
Throw it away
Gotta throw it away
All the colorful days, my friend
Are coming around again!
