Christmas takes on a whole new meaning at the Gardens, where visitors can enjoy ‘snowfall’ in the tropics surrounded by a dazzling light installation, say hello to a trio of Merry Bears, explore an enchanted forest, have a go at carnival games, catch festive performances by local artistes, dine on festive treats and more.

I did not take many Christmas themed photos this year. Just did not feel like Christmas I guess. But this afternoon, as I listened to my neighbors yell at each other, I looked down and was reminded that Christmas is not one day, but 365 days. Merry Christmas to all.

Christmas decorations on the sweets

SPENCER: Hi Tuesday friends! Look at the pretty lights in the city! And look at that BIG Christmas tree! It's so high it almost touches the sky! I like Christmas lights and decorations because they make people happy. But I wish the Christmas Bear could make people not ill and not sad. Maybe if I cross my paws and close my eyes and wish very very very hard? Do you think he can hear me and make wishes come true?

We are blessed with lots of early snow this year and with more on the way. It is forecast to snow tomorrow, again on Friday, and then again on Christmas Day. Not happy about the Christmas Day snow because of those who will be traveling to visit friends and relatives. Spent over an hour this morning blowing snow off the driveway so my kids and grandkids will have a place to park off the main road.

Last year, Ava didn't pay much attention to the Christmas tree. This year, she is totally amazed by the fact that we have a tree in our living room with lights and ornaments on it. I took a bunch of candid shots while Ava was exploring the tree when we first put it up. This was my favorite of the bunch, mainly due to how the light worked out (this is all natural light (and the lights from tree).

One interesting thing that happened in this one is that I had a cheap UV filter on my lens (I normally keep it on for protection). The filter, though, in scenes like this (and birthday candles) creates light reflections that typically ruin the picture. Here, in my eye, they kind of add to the "magical" quality of the photo (you can see the reflections around Ava's face).

PS - I deleted the Gingerbread House picture. The picture looked fine on my macbook screen, but when I looked at it on my calibrated screen, I was horrified to see that the dark background wasn't so dark and some cloning that I did looked terrible. That will teach me to edit on my laptop. :.)

The center of Kennebunkport, Maine, has a beautiful Christmas tree, adorned with lobsters. This was just one of many classic New England scenes that Adam and I saw on our epic New England Christmas tour last week. The holidays can be hectic so it was a great decision to step away from that and just take in some Christmas decorations. :)

The above photos was taken handheld at ISO 3200 with the E-M1. I'm really enjoying having a smaller camera to take around on fun days like this!

On our walk through a local park today we came across several memorial trees that had been dressed up for Christmas. What a great way to remember their loved ones at this time of year.

Christmas Day in the Ottawa, Ontario arrived with morning temperatures of about -30. Some freezing drizzle from early days stayed coated on the trees. I went out into the woods with my own new Christmas present (the EF 35mm f/2 IS) to "break it in". The cold winter sun was so bright that I could scarcely lift my eyes, and, in fact, it is placed right above my point of focus on the icy branch. I wanted to catch the light through the ice. This lens showed some amazing flare resistance, because, as you can see, there is essentially no negative effect from having the bright sun directly in the middle of the frame. Some winter diamonds...right in time from Christmas.

Merry (early) Christmas! :) It's cold outside and I'm home alone. So...here ya go. ;)

I am one of those people who really enjoy Christmas. I enjoy it for many reasons, not least of all for some of the traditions I have, some of which go back generations.

Two traditions I love to participate in during the festive season are writing Christmas cards and singing Christmas carols. Even as I type this, I have "Carols at King's College" playing on my stereo!

A very dear friend who enjoys photography as much as I do, and knows that I collect beautiful and vintage pieces, gave me a wonderful selection of antique ribbons, buttons, buckles, lace and other fine notions for Christmas.

Amongst the treasures I was given were some beautiful vintage style imitation stamps with a Christmas theme including Father Christmas, Christmas bells, pinecones and even an angel, all taken from old Christmas postcards and Christmas cards. A few months ago, the same friend who gave me the stamps and I were shopping at a specialist paper shop where I bought some "Dances" paper printed by Rossi Papers in Italy, originally printed in 1931. I thought the beautiful stamps (which are highlighted with glitter) and the musical paper represented the two traditions of writing Christmas cards and singing Christmas carols which I so enjoy.

How many of you follow holiday traditions? Ever heard of "Christmas Eve Gift"?

When I was little, and right up to when Mom and Dad passed away, we used to follow the tradition of Christmas Eve Gift. On Christmas Eve, we would sneak around the house to try and surprise the other person first by shouting "Christmas Eve Gift!" before they could say it to us. The person who was "got" had to hand over a gift. Usually, there was no gift involved, since it was just the fun of who got who first.

One Christmas Eve, when Mom & Dad were both alive and I lived in an apartment next door to them in Texas. I baked a huckleberry cobbler that morning. We loved huckleberries, as much for their sweet-tart taste as for the memories they evoked of the years we lived in Montana.

Fresh from the oven, all nice and warm, I wrapped the cobbler dish in towels and walked over to my parents' house. Carefully, I set the dish on a little table outside while I unlocked the door (I had a key for emergencies and such). I opened the door to a dark house.

All of a sudden, Mom and Dad jumped out from behind the door and shoulted "Christmas Eve Gift!" They got me for sure (and scared the living daylights out of me)! Good thing I had set that cobbler down on the table or else we would have been eating it off the floor!

That was one of my best Christmas memories of us.

My sister's family never followed that tradition in the first place, so we don't follow that tradition any longer. All I have are the memories of past Christmas Eve Gifts and the fun we had.

I hope you have some sort of fun tradition that you follow, and that your Christmas Eve and Christmas Day and Boxing Day and whatever other holiday you follow in place of all of this is one that will make great memories for you in the future years.

Christmas isn't complete without satsumas, clementines or mandarin oranges. I love the way that they're available with some of their leaves this year.
