Holly is an ancient plant and there is an abundance of folklore about Christmas Holly. The glossy, spiny, green leaves and bright, scarlet berries of the Ilex Aquifolium look joyful at this time of year and epitomize the Christmas colours we know and love. In olden days people would hang it outside their homes for good luck but it was in Victorian times when the holly really began to be utilised as decoration within people’s houses. At that time families really did ‘deck the halls with boughs of holly’. Even now, just a sprig of holly on the table or mantlepiece can really add a festive, finishing touch in the home. It is not surprising, with its prickly leaves, that holly symbolized ‘protection’. Besides Christmas decoration for the home, people have often planted it outside their doors or gateways to offer protection from harm. During November the holly really comes into its own in the woodland. While all the deciduous trees are shedding their leaves, the holly offers protection for the rabbits, foxes, deer and small birds. A sprig of holly, if it offers protection, will also bring good fortune. But beware, that fortune can quickly turn to bad if you do not follow Christmas tradition. Superstition says that the decorations must be taken down by twelfth night (6th January). Otherwise you will have bad luck or even visits from witches.

It would seem, that again, no one really knows when Christmas or Holiday cards turned into something that was just a picture, with some words and less of something more personable or directly sent to a friend or family member.
It has become some mass mailing of a form, mostly with a picture on it, in some sort of "Everyone gets the same thing"
Now, I never sent out Christmas Cards, This is something Marriage seems to create, etiquette books talk about once you get married, all the people invited to the wedding and actually come, are all supposed to get cards from you for like 11 years or something like that...
So, I can see how this has turned into a bragging right, where, you send a picture from your holiday or vacation or recent trip...

Christmas is an annual festival commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ, observed primarily on December 25 as a religious and cultural celebration among billions of people around the world. A liturgical feast central to Christianity, preparation for Christmas begins on the First Sunday of Advent and it is followed by Christmastide, which historically in the West lasts twelve days and culminates on Twelfth Night. There are different hypotheses regarding the date of Jesus's birth. In the early fourth century, the church fixed the date as December 25, the date of the winter solstice in the Roman calendar. It is nine months after Annunciation on March 25, also the Roman date of the spring equinox. Most Christians celebrate on December 25 in the Gregorian calendar, which has been adopted almost universally in the civil calendars used in countries throughout the world. However, part of the Eastern Christian Churches celebrate Christmas on December 25 of the older Julian calendar, which currently corresponds to January 7 in the Gregorian calendar. For Christians, believing that God came into the world in the form of man to atone for the sins of humanity rather than knowing Jesus's exact birth date is considered to be the primary purpose of celebrating Christmas.

Christmas Nuts, now in the shops the trouble with starting early though is I eat them too soon! Nut cracker home made by hubby.

My annual trip to Birmingham for the Outskirts Christmas party seems to get longer! This year I arrived the night before and met up with my friends Linda and Helen and had a lovely evening looking around the Christmas Market followed by a great, fun night in a bar!

As the wife decorated the tree so well I thought I'd experiment with using my flash and fixed light to try and get some dynamic photos.
In the end though, just turning all the lights off in the room and allowing the fairy lights do the work produced the nicest picture.
Chuffed that I remembered to stop-down the aperture a bit to get the star-burst affect on the lights.
We celebrated Christmas 2006 at our home in Richmond, Virginia.
Each year, we exchanged gifts with my Norwegian cousins.
I'm petting my beloved cat, Stabbur, before opening my presents from Norway. He died in 2016. I still miss him a lot!!

Christmas morning 1915, Englewood, New Jersey. My father celebrated his first Christmas in the arms of his big sister. The clothes, decorations and old fashioned toys may be of another era, but my aunt's expression would match any child's today.
The picture was taken in 1915 and printed in 1916, as written on the photo.
