Here is an unusual Christmas light rendering. Unfortunately, the display was ever changing at a fast pace so I needed a lot of shots to sort. I needed new fodder on Longmont's Christmas lights to add to this series of action shots. I decided to do a full zoom along with the usual jiggles to add to the action. These are merely lights while the camera and lens was being zoomed and jiggled. Three seconds seems enough to management sufficient manipulations but I had the camera on the monopod. I didn't introduce camera back spin on this capture. This looks like I am entering hyper space speeds. I always try several exposures. Reality is highly overrated and only in the eye of the beer holder. Perhaps I've consumed one beer over the line?
I was driving around town the other night to track some Christmas lights mentioned in the local paper.I am still not out of snaps of the other subjects but I hope my breadth has expanded. I did vewwy, vewwy wittle warping and editing, for me at least, to present it the way I wanted. I have learned to slow the camera down even further to three seconds this time but I boosted the lens setting to f:/22. Three seconds is about enough to accomplish a wide array of tricks if prepared and prepanned so to speak. Of course this digital experimentation is cheap. I did set the camera to a shutter delay of one second and that was a help in preparing for the action. I will continue with that. I had fun shooting all of these and they were a breeze to edit! I get mostly muted colors in the ag settings I have shot, so I revel in JUST COLORS. And this title DOES have a nice touch that will get no additional explanation. I spent two hours giving this stuff titles so beer with me! At least I got a chance to shoot colors instead of tones and subtleties.
Looking back through my photos form my trip to NYC this time last year and thought I'd edit a few to upload and share. Hope everyone had a nice Christmas! :)
Last year, Ava didn't pay much attention to the Christmas tree. This year, she is totally amazed by the fact that we have a tree in our living room with lights and ornaments on it. I took a bunch of candid shots while Ava was exploring the tree when we first put it up. This was my favorite of the bunch, mainly due to how the light worked out (this is all natural light (and the lights from tree).
One interesting thing that happened in this one is that I had a cheap UV filter on my lens (I normally keep it on for protection). The filter, though, in scenes like this (and birthday candles) creates light reflections that typically ruin the picture. Here, in my eye, they kind of add to the "magical" quality of the photo (you can see the reflections around Ava's face).
PS - I deleted the Gingerbread House picture. The picture looked fine on my macbook screen, but when I looked at it on my calibrated screen, I was horrified to see that the dark background wasn't so dark and some cloning that I did looked terrible. That will teach me to edit on my laptop. :.)

Durch ihre ungewöhnlich lange Verwendung als Rammschiff blieb sie erhalten und ist heute vermutlich der letzte Vertreter dieser Art von Güterschiffen auf dem Bodensee sowie das älteste erhaltene Bodenseeschiff mit Stahlrumpf.

Christmas Potpourri Vase
Potpourri is a mixture of dried, naturally fragrant plant materials, used to provide a gentle natural scent, which is often placed in a decorative bowl.
The word "potpourri" comes into English from the French word pot-pourri. The French term has two connotations. It is the French name for a Spanish stew with a wide variety of ingredients called "olla podrida", a specialty of the city of Burgos. The word was taken and copied by the French military during the Napoleonic occupation of Burgos (1808–1813). The word pot in French has the same meaning as it does in English (and as olla does in Spanish), while the word pourri means rotten.
Pot-pourri has been used in rooms since ancient times, in a variety of ways, including just scattering it on the floor. In early 17th-century France, fresh herbs and flowers were gathered, beginning in spring and continuing throughout the summer. The herbs were left for a day or two to become limp, then layered with coarse sea salt. The aging mixture was stirred occasionally as layers were added to it. Often the mixture would ferment or even mold as the summer went by. In the autumn, spices would be added to the unsightly grey mix until a pleasant fragrance was achieved. Then, scent preserving fixatives were added. The finished potpourri was set out in special pots with perforated lids to perfume rooms.
Much modern potpourri consists of any decoratively shaped dried plant material (not necessarily from scented plants) with strong natural and synthetic perfumes (and often coloured dyes) added, with the scent often bearing no relation to the plant material used. Sometimes, items that do not originate from plants are mixed in with the potpourri, to give it bulk and to make it more aesthetically pleasing. It is possible to spray scents onto potpourri, however, a fixative is needed so that the scent is absorbed for slow release. Generally, orris root (from the root of an iris) is used for this purpose.

Some may call it a super-sized ornament or a giant children’s toy, but what really is that wooden, spinning thing in the middle of Marktplatz?
What is it? The 26-foot, carousel-like structure is called a Weihnachtspyramide, or Christmas Pyramid. These wooden pyramids are a traditional German decoration dating back to the 16th century. It is an art form that many believe evolved into our current custom of a Christmas tree.
Where did it come from? Christmas pyramids have their roots in the German Erzgebirge (Ore Mountains), a silver ore mining region in the eastern part of German. When the mines began to close, the manufacture of wooden toys became a newfound source of income.
What is it for? Woodworkers would use their moving artwork to capture the attention of children and teach them Bible stories. The artisans would create figurines depicting each part of a story and arrange them in order on the tiers of the pyramid. Typically Christmas pyramids tell the Nativity story of Jesus’ birth and include angels blowing their trumpets, shepherds visiting the stable and magi bringing gifts.
While still a storytelling form of art, Christmas pyramids serve a mainly decorative purpose today. Most are table-top size and used in homes as a holiday decoration—filling children and adults alike with holiday cheer as lighted candles spin the windmill round and round.

Fredericksburg’s Christmas pyramid, handcrafted in Germany, was first displayed at Marktplatz during the 2009 holiday season. It is illuminated each year on the Friday evening following Thanksgiving, kicking off the Christmas season in Fredericksburg, and remaining lit through Epiphany, the first week of January.

Wishing everyone that their Christmas wishes should come true. Eva is wishing for the gingerbread cookies being rolled out on the counter.
This of course was before the cookies were iced by my 4 year old son, who came down with rip roaring gastroenteritis a few hours later. The cookies are now a little less desirable.
Today they turned the Christmas lights on at the Legislature. We took the dog and the tripod and got a few shots. These are ice sculptures in front of the Legislature

This Christmas lights zoom shot is just for fun. I caught this shot at the Mormon Temple Christmas exhibit just outside Washington, DC. I have driven by the temple lots of times, but this is the first time I stopped for photos. Very colorful!

I generally do not shoot Panos for two reasons- One, I dont know how to shoot them, and secondly, I lack the right equipment. For once, I broke my own rule and shot a 2 shot Pano with my newly acquired tripod head. Although it took me a while to process this image and it did involve a lot of work with perspective correction, I did enjoy the post processing workflow. Hope you like the image.
This is the main Christmas market in Dusseldorf, which begins at the "Rathaus" or the town hall. It also houses the tallest christmas tree in Dusseldorf.
