One of several bento boxes that I consumed while travelling through Kantō, Kansai and Chūgoku on the bullet trains.

yay, I just got a new bento box (the red one). I now have three bento boxes, I can't wait to use them ^_^

well, I have one other but I'm missing the lid to it o_O"

Two tiers; bottom tier is 230ml with a lid, 550ml top tier holds two convenience-store-sized onigiri (rice balls). Exploded view here, matching dessert box and mayo cups here. Bought at Ichiban Kan in San Francisco for US$1.50; they had others that matched the other mayo cups. Quality's a little flimsy, but at that price who cares? Store details at the SF Bay Area shopping guide for bento gear. Ichiban Kan dollar store plans to open an online store selling cheap bento gear in December 2007; details here. Photo of a sample lunch packed inside this box is here.

Super Healthy LunchBox Ideas:

Busy kids need a healthy school lunch to boost their energy and help them concentrate and learn in the afternoon. It is important to drink enough water throughout the day. Fruit and vegetables make a delicious, colourful addition to any meal and are easy to include in a lunch box. Proteins are essential for good health and can also be easily added, whilst carbohydrates and dairy add to the variety of foods we eat. #LunchBoxIdeas #BentoBox #Healthy #BackToSchool #Kids

The NAOE Bento Box on December 15, 2011:

- In the lower right quadrant: cobia and scallop sashimi, seaweed, shisho, and freshly grated wasabi

NAOE, located at 175 Sunny Isles Boulevard, was opened in chef Kevin Cory on March 19, 2009. Chef Cory had studied under chef Nobuo Kase in Kyoto and his uncle, Yasushi Naoe of Kawai Ryokan in Toyama, before returning to Miami and turning a subpar sushi bar, Siam River, into one of Miami's best. His family has operated a shoyu (soy sauce) brewery, also called Naoe, in Oono since 1825, and a sake brewery, Nakamura Brewery, in Ishikawa since the 1800's.

A dinner at NAOE is Omakase (お任せ) style, consisting of a bento box followed by individual sushi pieces. A 2008 Miami Beach location was planned and canceled due to a City garbage issue. The Sunny Isles location closed on December 18, 2011 ahead of demolition plans for the stripmall it sat in. NAOE is moving to Brickell Key, near downtown Miami, in early 2012.

Over the years NAOE has earned numerous accolades--four stars and one of the top 4 Japanese restaurants in North America by Forbes (2011; top 3 in 2010); a 29 rating from Zagat; a Fodors Choice award (2011); one of the top 30 Restaurants in America from USA Today Travel (2011); voted one of the Top 50 Restaurants (2010) and Top 100 Restaurants in the United States by Open table diners (2011); Miami New Times Best of Miami 2010 Best Japanese Restaurant (2010).

Bought at Kyoto station.

Fabrics purchased at Fabric Corner in Arlington, MA. It was half off so I picked out a bunch of colors, but didn't know what to do with them. I sewed a couple of blocks and really loved the contrast of bento box. The border fabric was purhcased at Jo-Anns (I think it was quilter's cotton). I sent this out to be professionally quilted and the thread is variegated. Photographed on my mom's clothes line in Maine

This one is described in detail here. It's breakfast and lunch!

Assembled & ready to eat. Photo of the packed bento (unassembled) is here. Morning prep time: 5 minutes. Full details here with a review of the microwave-safe donburi bento box from Hakoya and an additional preschooler lunch.

The Year of the Tiger 2010! Details on hapa bento.

The figs are really good. I can't stop eating them, so I've packed at least one for Saba Man in case they're gone by end of day!

One little, two little , three little indians. One little indian girl!

495ml total capacity, bought for US$1.50 at the Daiso store in Daly City. It needs a band to keep everything shut, but I like that I can use fewer layers (i.e. for my son) or all three (for myself) as necessary. Assembled view here. Blog entry here.

Ugh. I tried to color correct this, but there's only so much you can do with a dark photo taken on a rainy morning.

New bento box lunch. Onigori, bologna, baby bellas, broccoli, and apple

notes on the box! The first week is over...phew! About 400 calories in this one. (shrimp is so low-cal if you don't deep fry it or smother in garlic oil etc.)
