The swift fox kits watch with trepidation as a Swainson's hawk flies low along the dirt road in front of them. The kits probably weigh only 3-4 pounds each, and as such are on the menu for some of the larger raptors in the area, especially golden eagles. They are smart to watch the skies and stay close to the safety of the den.

The Canada Geese are now looking for nesting sites around the pools in Dunham Park and once found defend their territory from any would be trespassers

I always feel a little electricity in the air when I come suddenly upon a deer in the wild. I think it has something to do with how alert the deer becomes when it senses my presence. There is a vibrancy inherent in this level of mindfulness--no thoughts or judgements--just a total immersion in observing the moment.

Now I'm heading back to immerse myself in work. See ya all next weekend.

Vaction in LA for a week!!

The cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus) is an atypical member of the cat family (Felidae): that is, unique in its speed, while lacking climbing abilities. Therefore it is placed in its own genus, Acinonyx. The word "cheetah" is derived from a Sanskrit word meaning "variegated body."

It is the fastest land animal, reaching speeds of 70-75 mph in short bursts covering distances up to 460m, and has the ability to accelerate from 0 to 68 mph in three seconds, faster than most supercars.

Sadly, cheetah cubs have a high mortality rate due to genetic factors and predation by carnivores in competition with the cheetah, such as the lion and hyena. Recent inbreeding causes cheetahs to share very similar genetic profiles. This has led to poor sperm, birth defects, cramped teeth, curled tails, and bent limbs. Some biologists now believe that they are too inbred to flourish as a species.

Cheetahs are listed as Vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), Red List of threatened species. Some 7,000 cheetahs remain in the wild in Africa and (a few) Asia.

There have been successful breeding programmes, including the use of in vitro fertilisation, in zoos around the world. This beauty was seen at Chester Zoo.

The National Weather Alert alarm goes off and the guy says "Take Cover Now!". To me that mean grab my camera NOW and run out the front door and across the road. About 3 minute after this shot was taken and a couple dozen others I ran out of time. I am pretty sure that I broke my High School 100 yard dash record by at least a second!. I barely got wet.

While out for a morning walk with Murphy, I noticed this GBH perched on a rock in front of another cottage ... so I snuck down closer to grab a few exposures ;-)

Nature is beginning to wake up to spring. Roe deer are already finding food more easily, and the first swans have also landed on the lake.

Hazel was sleeping on this branch, but when another squirrel ran past she was on full alert instantly. She noticed, even though she was 5 meters above the ground and that other squirrel was not loud at all (Squirrels-2020-9944.jpg)

Happy Caturday!

Facts: The jaguar (Panthera onca) is a big cat, a feline in the Panthera genus, and is the only extant Panthera species native to the Americas. The jaguar is the third-largest feline species after the tiger and the lion, and the largest in the Americas. The jaguar is a near-threatened species and its numbers are declining. Threats include loss and fragmentation of habitat. While international trade in jaguars or their parts is prohibited, the cat is still frequently killed by humans, particularly in conflicts with ranchers and farmers in Brazil.

Warthogs are wary creatures. The best shots I could get on our South African trip were usually at the full extent of my 400mm lens.

To alert the others to danger, the warthogs will stick their tail up like an arial from a 1967 Pontiac as they trot off to hide in the tall grass.

Squirrel at Tehidy Park, Camborne.

She is always alert, listening.

We were lucky, a sunny day for a change :)

I know I've done shadows like this before, and ok to be honest, I've got some others I'd like to post sometime. But I really like the way it comes out at him, and he keeps a wary eye on it as he passes.

The big eyes and ears of the hare are always alert.

I went out early this morning, just before the sun came out and made it hot again.

When I looked through the window, this fox was curled up and seemed to be snoozing, but as soon as I carefully opened it to take a photo, up popped its head - and gave me that intense stare!
