this Cheetah had made a kill and was resting after eating.
It had heard lions roaring nearby and is on high alert, raising its head regularly above the grass to check the area.
After spending some time with this beautiful cat we moved on and found 2 big male lions and a female a few hundred meters away.

Cleo in the garden this morning. Her expression and the hedgehog hairdo are due to the dogs being noisy on the other side of the fence. The dogs were barking because they wanted to intimidate Filou which worked very well. I don't think that they had noticed Cleo because usually they have a certain respect for her. A moment after I took this photo she ran over to the fence, hit one of the dogs on the nose and suddenly there was silence on the other side of the fence.

This bald eagle flew across one of the lakes at Jackson Bottom, prompting the other birds to scatter. Then it landed in this tree, carefully surveying the scene. After a bit, it flew off, without having harmed any of the other birds.
Alert Hooded Merganser hen fluffing and preening her feathers on a sunny cool afternoon.
Fairly common migrant heading north in mid-Spring returning in the Fall. Absent in Winter. Nests in a tree cavity like a Wood Duck. No recorded nesting sites.
Moderate risk with rough or very rough seas, possible coastal erosion and delays to maritime connections. Caution is advised, especially for recreational boating and beach activities, which may be prohibited. It is necessary to secure objects exposed to the wind, avoid piers and breakwaters, and pay attention to areas near the coast.
I saw this lioness is low scrub close to a dry creek bed in Kruger National Park. She has left her cubs in the creek bed about 300 metres distant. I assume she was looking to find her family breakfast, although her attention seemed to be on her babies, since that's where she's looking. I would never have seen her cubs had she not looked in their direction. They were too far away and too well hidden for photos.
Even when resting the barnie is always on the alert looking for her next prey.

This male Anna's hummingbird was ready and alert, leaning forward slightly, ready to fly off. I just love his tiny little feet. He's got an impressive gorget in my opinion. Come springtime, he'll be able to use that to his advantage. Those flashy colors attract the ladies.
Earlier I already posted a picture of this roe in between the bushes where she has fled into it because of a passing cyclist (www.flickr.com/photos/115540984@N02/53962995818/in/datepo...). This was a moment before when she was grazing very peacefully although she had found out there was somebody pointing a camera at her.
It is one of those moments that you remember for the rest of your life because the whole setting breathed peace and tranquillity. For me the reason to go out as much as possible. With nature I connect, far away as possible from human society.
Spotted hyena (Crocuta crocuta) cubs, just outside their underground den. Cubs are born with soft, dark brown hair, and weigh 1.5 kg (3.3 lbs) on average. They begin to lose the black coat and develop the spotted, lighter colored pelage of the adults at 2–3 months.

This chipmunk was alerting to the other chipmunks and they alerted back. They were easy to find them when they made noise.
This group of Canada Geese (Branta canadensis) seemed to be on alert. They were chasing each other around and kicking up the dust in the corn stubble.
There are a lot of mule deer near the base of the eastern hills in the Bear Lake Valley, Idaho. The snow isn't as deep there so they usually find food, but they still look very thin. They watched us carefully but stayed near their food source instead of running away. We hope the plants start to leaf out soon so these beautiful animals can survive.
There's not much that would bother a Sparrowhawk in an urban garden (probably a domestic cat) but they're on full alert at all times. Not long after this was taken it flew away with its prey (Starling).

The prairie dogs went on alert when this bison dropped and started to scratch its back rolling on the ground. Not something you want to be near or 'under'.

Encompassing more than 69,000 acres, the Forest Preserve District of Cook County, Illinois, is the largest forest preserve district in the United States, providing many opportunities for Chicago area residents to escape from the urban grind. But in places where bike paths and hiking trails abut busy highways, it’s a good idea to stay alert, lest one of those vehicles whizzing past should suddenly veer out of control. For a look at what can happen, check out the shot in the first comment, taken a couple of years ago at almost the same spot as the image above.
