Mellom 1905 og 1920 ble det funnet 65 islamske sølvmynter fra perioden mellom 896/7 og 950/1 i ei myr på gården Holtan i Orkdal.
Alle myntene kom til Norge og ble nedlagt samlet en gang i andre halvdel av 900-tallet. Hvem som eide disse myntene, og hvorfor de ble lagt i jorden vet vi ikke.
Som et samlebegrep på den typen mynt som fantes i Holtanfunnet, brukes som oftest kufisk. Dette er en betegnelse på islamske mynter som ble etter 698 og som karakteriseres av at de kun har innskrifter og ingen bilder. Selve betegnelsen kufisk kommer fra en skrifttype som ble utviklet i den hellige byen Kufa i Irak, og som går igjen på alle myntene.
De kufiske dirhemene var av meget godt sølv, og en ettertraktet vare blant vikingene. Vikingene foretok streiftog i de slaviske områdene for å ta fanger som de solgte hos Khazarene og Volga-Bulgarene.

Tracy had never taken a long distance train before, only local commuter metro lines in LA and Washington DC, so this was a big deal, especially given her fascination with trains and so I was happy for her to ride even though I was going to be driving to the same location at the same time.
She got on the train at about 9:45 am in Culpeper, Virginia where I dropped her off and then we had a race of sorts to New Haven, CT where we'd see who could get there first.
It turned out that she made it to New Haven about half an hour before I did (a distance about 385 miles for me) so I consider it a pretty good race, especially since I would have easily beat her if it weren't for two things: #1 I stopped for a leisurely (albeit fast food) lunch in Washington DC, and #2, the section of I-95 between Port Chester, CT and New Haven, CT was absolutely atrocious with stupid traffic the entire way.

I just felt like some things had to change.
1) I want to take more photos and I want to take more creative photos. For this purpose, I´ll carry a notebook with me all the time where I´ll note down my picture ideas. (I know, that´s not a quite new thing to do but I just recently thought about it.)
2) I want to clean my room and sort out my old clothes, my old books and all the other old stuff.
3) I want to be nicer. To others, to me, just in general. I don´t know yet, what I´ll exactly do, we´ll see. I want to treat others like I´d like to be treated.
(This resolution also refers to the internal monologue in 178/365.)
4) I don´t want to spend so much time doing nothing.
Yes, this is me. *cringes* Here are my facts:
1. I used like 20 different effects on this photo so it would be harder to see what I look like. That camera in front of my face also helps.
2. Today is my half birthday! :)
3. I'm so happy because my photo of the Marauder's Map was explored on January 1st! My first one! :)
4. I have a late-start tomorrow where we don't have to go to school until ten. More reading time? I think yes.
5. I walk fast. All my friends tell me this. I can't help it.
6. It was cold here today. Nothing compared to northern places, but cold.
7. I'm going to Hawaii this summer! I'm so excited. I wish I could go right now and escape winter.
8. I'm addicted to Honey Nut Cheerios. Best. Cereal. Ever.

1) I got the ball of water by taking multiple pictures before and after he popped it.
2) The hardest part was to get the timing just right.

1) I swore I wouldn't start any new projects until I finished the old ones.
2) I swore I'd never do half-square-triangles again.
3) So how is it that I just spent several hours cutting all these half-rectangle triangles? Do I not listen to myself?
1. I am thankful for getting about 10 lb of clothing out of my closet and into the care of folks that will enjoy the clothing more than I have been. I feel lighter and free-er! :)
2. I am thankful I was able to speak with Gramma Monday morning! :) She is taking guitar lessons .. that is SO COOL! :) Did I mention that her 82nd Birthday was just the other day!? :)
3. I am thankful for working on my interaction with “good” things coming into my life. Oh my goodness, what an eye and brain opening experience.
4. I am thankful for maintaining a spacious home and being an auditory learner because I was able to close my eyes and learn the Shiva Nata horizontal legs sequence square in an afternoon. The next couple days I taught myself how to combine horizontal arms with the horizontal legs sequence square! I am getting smoother at it and am finding it best to work on parts at a time rather than the entire thing at once. For instance my brain often feels fuzzy by the time I reach 4-1 so I will simply begin there when I am playing with the patterns! :) Learning the legs sequence is neat because when I first encountered it, looking at it made my brain freak out. I did it differently this time. I acknowledged that I didn’t have to learn it today and put the DVD on repeat. Each time I listened I was able to pick out more pieces I knew and combine them .. just like doing a puzzle. Soon the pattern emerged! :)
5. I am thankful for how light reflects off of snow because it does beautiful things like cancel out shadows in the afternoon sun. It also bounces light to places that were previously dark.
6. I am thankful to have seen Ray because he showed me some of the photos his daughter sent him. He is so excited about and for her .. and I think to have someone to be safely enthusiastic with!? :)
7. I am thankful for gifts of beautiful, luxurious chocolate. Mmmm dark chocolate! :)
8. I am thankful for giving myself the go ahead to do something I have pondered for awhile. I am quietly, secretly excited. :)
9. I am thankful for figuring out that the excuse that I usually try to give myself for not doing a thing .. is not usually the real reason for not allowing the thing to move forward.
10. I am thankful for accidentally discovering a secret and verifying its correctness today! [The secret is: when I walk along thinking thoughts that make me feel good and smiling !!! traffic will stop for me even on busy streets and grumpy people are repelled by me so they cross the street to get away from me! :) I also notice more beauty about things that I have walked by hundreds of times. Now that you know a secret, you could try it yourself!? :)]
11. I am thankful for knowing stuff I know even though it makes no sense that I would know it! Difficult to know sometimes but always good to know because I can send short, meaningful messages to the right people at the right time.

found these mirror for $1. i love the old needlepoint, but the frame was all the wrong color and it wasn't cute enough for me. i decided to add some embellishments...a cigar box from belgium, old shoe, flowers, glove, prisms and buttons. i painted out the fram white. now she's pretty cute.
I heard the roar and immediately set my camera on the tripod and got ready to take a series. I wanted to stand right above the tracks. The bridge I was standing is a wooden bridge with gaps between any two wooden planks. Exited, nervous and at the same time determined.
This is the track next to Cedar Lake Trail and a lot of trains pass along this route.

I have two climbing roses that pretty much did nothing last year because of "powdery mildew". I was a bad rose mother and didn't take care of it. This year I'm being just the slightest bit more proactive, and it looks like my minimal efforts are actually paying off! Guess I shouldn't be so quick to give up. ;-)
They're not fully recovered, but at least their blooms look good. <3

This is the first of my "Vignette A Week" Vignettes. Vignette A Week is a personal challenge to myself to build at least one vignette a week. The reasons why:
1. I lack the time to build much.
I lack the brick to build big.
2. I have not paid much attention to the little details in my creations in the past. This is a skill I want to develop.
3. The lack of building going on is driving me crazy.
So I have set forth the challenge with these basic guidelines:
The build must be at least 8x8, no more than 10x10 at the base.
The build must be no more than 12 bricks tall.
There can be no more than 3-4 minifigs used in the build.
Finally, I am allowed to bend rules two and three if it seems appropriate.
I am going to run this challenge until the end of the current semester, and I'll see if it's practical to continue it then.
Ok this one may not be for everyone, but I had the idea of an extreme SP of my glaring eye at the whole tag thing. I was really hoping that Streuthie would do this, because she has a more powerful glare than I, but for now...my eye will have to do.

This is Russ and he is the husband of Kath (see Week 1).
I often have coffee at Kath and Russ' house, even more so since Russ bought Kath this coffee machine for her birthday in March.
I actually met Russ before I met Kath as he was my next door neighbour in our first year at college.
My most vivid memory of Russ during our college days was the time that I heard noises coming from his room. I ventured into the hallway and pressed my ear against his door and determined that the noises were, in fact, a kind of singing. After gathering plenty of other students to listen to the performance, we realised that Russ had headphones on and was singing at the top of his lungs to this song ! We thumped on the door to get his attention and he opened the door to the applause of around 15 people!
Now, whenever I hear Julian Lennon, I think of Russ.

1. I don't know if I can think of 16 things of interest to share with you.
2. I'm a compulsive person, in bad ways and good ways.
3. Things that annoy me include not having respect for others, bad spelling, insincerity, litter dropping and tail-gating. Oh, and a special mention goes out to all those people who assume everyone on a train is delighted to listen to the crappy, tinny pop blaring out of their mobile phone. Get some headphones!
4. I have spent way too much money on photographic equipment.
5. In large social gatherings (which, to me, means more than about 8 people) I'll be the one sat in the corner just listening.
6. I love music but hate dancing.
7. I don't smile much but that doesn't mean I'm a miserable person.
8. I can't remember exactly when I got into cooking but it has to be one of the best ways of relaxing and enjoying myself.
9. I play the guitar. I am mostly self taught which partly explains why I'm not very good at it.
10. I hated school and couldn't wait to leave.
11. My secondary school was an all boys Catholic school run by an order of Brothers. It served as one of the cornerstones of my becoming a devout atheist.
12. I wish I hadn't taken my Dad's advice and gone straight from school into a "safe" job.
13. I have never managed to finish a crossword. My brain just doesn't seem to be wired that way.
14. I am an only child.
15. If pushed I'd say my favourite colour is blue. Or maybe green.
16. I spend a fair amount of time despairing at the state of humanity. But from time to time I do see glimmers of hope. Quite often here on flickr.
