3) My lucky number is 3.
4) I was a band nerd with inch thick glasses in middle school. I wore hand-me-downs and bell bottoms and was teased heavily.

6) I grew up in church. My family was in church six days a week. And I hated it. It was not until a few years ago that I decided to have a true relationship with God. My life has been blessed ever since!!
6) After starting to write again, after over 10 years, I met my fiance online. Neither of us were looking for each other. We were just writing, because that's what writers do. We became best friends and the rest is history!!
7) I love animals. As I child, we had rats, hamsters, birds, ferrets, cats, dogs, rabbits.... Almost a farm!
8) I currently have two hamsters from Russia. The mean one wants to go back!!

Q. Black wall tires?
A. Yeah. We headed towards the end of Hawaiian Beaches towards the Beach Road on the right hand side. We continued to go through a dirt road.
Q. Is that dirt road commonly known as the Beach Road?
A. Beach Road. It comes out at Kapoho. Okay, wait. I gotta say about the stops. Okay, we made several stops to smoke cocaine. And after, well we kept continuing on little ways. We came out by an intersection going towards Kapoho and that's where we saw a girl standing up. As we were going past my friend Ian looked towards the side and he said, "Ho look at that girl." Then we continued to go forward down the road.
Q. Would that be towards Pohiki?
A. Yes. Then we reached by these mailboxes area that we turned around. That place is better known as Red Road where they call it. And we headed back towards the girl.
Q. Did Ian tell you why he had turned around or why he wanted to get back where the girl was?
A. No, not at that point. Little while after as we were going
he wanted to talk to the girl he said. I guess to make a date or something.
Q. Okay, then what happened?
A. Then we headed back and he was going faster and I was telling him for slow down. About 40-45 miles per hour because I looked at the speedometer. And then he just kept on going towards the girl. The next thing I knew I felt like going over a speed bump real fast. How many times we went over? About I would say roughly two times.
Q. And that two times felt like going over a speed bump?
A. Going forward and reversing.
Q. Prior to feeling like twice you went over a speed bump, did you see a girl at all? Before you ran her over?
A. Before I seen her going across. Kinda walking across.
Q. Okay, you earlier told me that, I know you are unclear but you were pretty sure that she had a bike with her.
A. Yes.

Q. Would that be on the roadway in front of the car?
A. Yes.
Q. Okay, then what happened?
A. Then we headed back towards. Oh, they put the body in the trunk part of the bug. In front.

Q. At the time that he was having sex with her, when we talked earlier, you mentioned that she was bleeding and had blood stains on her.
A. Yeah.
Q. Can you remember what areas of her body she was injuried?
A. Yeah. She had blood coming out of her eyes, her mouth and her nose. Pretty much about it.
Q. Okay, then what happened after Ian asked you to have sex with her and you refused. What happened next?
A. He told me we gotta kill her. Or knock her off in other words.
Q. Is that the words he used? Knock her off?
A. Yeah.
Q. Did he tell you why?
A. He said if someone was to find her and she was to make it, live, she would tell on us and we all would get busted. So he told me for look for something so when I when go look I found a L-shaped bar, tire bar.
Q. Where did you find this tire bar?
A. In the back seat area. Then I walked out to the bug. I mean I walked towards the girl and he told me for hit um. So I when swing all the way back and I wen' hit her on the head. Somewhere on the head. I'm not sure where. Then I dropped the bar and I went towards the bug on the driver side. I remained outside it. I was feeling sick and I told Ian that I cannot do this so he wen' head back to her and I guess he when do um.
Q. Did he have the tire bar when he went back towards her?
A. Well I dropped it after I when hit her.
Q. Okay, when you hit her on the head did you notice which area it was? Did you notice if she was bleeding from that area or if there was a wound where you hit her?
A. No, I cannot remember. But I know that the hit that I gave her was real hard. And after that, after I was leaning on the bug and went back in the bug. And then later on, after Ian and the brother Shawn came back in. They closed the front part of the trunk and then came in the car then we left.

2018 was a great year filled with a lot of new products and technology. We saw many new and exciting products released, with a few unexpected ones that surprised me.
I also got to review some vintage gear and while I didn’t attend any shows, I still was able to see and demo a number of products released this year. I think we are also getting to the point where most tech is coming down in price while still delivering great quality; examples include Sonos and McIntosh. Here are my top picks and wish list items from 2018.
Smart Thermostat – Nest Thermostat E – Top Pick
Simple to install, set up, and use; it has never let me down. I’ve been using Nest thermostats for years and they have been great. It keeps my home at a nice temperature with little input and the app lets me manage my climate control from anywhere.
Smart Soundbar – Sonos Beam – Top Pick
This smaller soundbar from Sonos is a real winner, packing some really good sound into a compact package. Amazon Alexa voice control combined with HDMI/ARC connectivity is solid on paper and takes some effort to get going, but once sorted out, it’s a solid package that’s fun to use.
Integrated Amplifier – Mcintosh MA252 – Wish List
This sweet-sounding hybrid tube amp with a built-in phono stage makes a great entry level McIntosh piece. It also has two sets of RCA inputs and a balanced input as well, a fantastic unit for the price. It’s sure to last for decades and you can upgrade the tubes to your heart’s (and ear’s) content.
Mesh Networking system – Eero – Wish List
The best wireless mesh network I’ve used to date, sure there are better deals out there, but Eero is the most powerful and stable system I’ve seen. If you have serious issues in your home with Wi-Fi and lack Cat6, Eero is the way to go.
Voice Control – Amazon Alexa – Top Pick
Alexa has her quirks, but I still find myself using her more than Google because of the sheer amount of home automation skills she has. I often use Alexa to control my TV, lighting, and timers.
Headphones – Bowers & Wilkins PX – Wish List
I really need to buy a pair of these. They sound great and have a really cool feature set inside their app. Another plus is they are not too expensive compared to others.

googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display(‘div-gpt-ad-1438634291880-0’); });
Speakers – Wilson Audio Sasha DAW – Wish List
I’ve heard hundreds of speakers in my years of stereo listening. I’ve heard more expensive products, but I always come back to Wilson as my favorite sounding speakers. They are a bit over my pay grade, but maybe someday. We can dream right?
TV – Sony XBR65A9F OLED – Wish List
Secrets Sponsor
googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display(‘div-gpt-ad-1438634291880-1’); });
I’ve owned a plasma before and sure, they look great, but they run hot and use a ton of power. The new OLEDs are incredible and use far less power while still having amazing blacks, the new A9F is brighter than the outgoing A8 OLED and it is impressive; the best TV I’ve seen to date.
Going into 2019…
Looking forward to 2019 I really hope to see improvements in networking. Mesh networks have gotten so much better, but I feel there is still room for improvement (and greater value). Also, OLEDs are slowly coming down in price. I can’t wait until we see 55 and 65-inch screens get to around $1000, that will be my buying point. Sonos always peaks my interest, I am sure they have some more products already in the pipeline, and I will be there to jump on a review. I hope everyone has an amazing and safe rest of the year, I look forward to more writing in 2019.

The great comedian Sid Caesar does not endorse the following method of improving at foreign languages.
I teach English in Japan, lately with I like to think increasing success, and I speak & write Japanese. My trick for learning foreign languages is....
The Sid Caesar method: If you learn to impersonate languages, no matter how badly, you will also learn how to speak them. Please give this time, and try the experiment.
Gradually it seemed to me that the biggest difficulty with learning a foreign language is not making meaning but the fear of the lack of it.
What do I mean?! The story goes like this.
When I learnt to speak Japanese after studying it for about 4 years I also found myself able to speak and read French. I had never been good at French at school, but something in my head, my psychological attitude to language had changed. I am not saying I am good at French but suddenly I had no problem with blabbing in my bad French. For a long time I did not work out what had changed.
Then two things happened:
1) I came across some research by Steven Heine, extending "terror management theory" arguing that there is not thing more scary than the absence of meaning. You can download his paper here Page on Psych
2) I came across some comedians that "impersonate languages" such as the late great Sid Caesar, and I thought "That's it. That is what changed."
Here is Sid Caesar impersonating French and other languages.
When I was young I had a black friend who (though he is as English as I am) when treated with prejudice in a public place used to reply in his impersonation of an African language. At the time even the thought of impersonating a language filled me with dread. But now I hardly break into a sweat. I am not as good as Sid Caesar in the above video but speaking in gobbledygook no longer hurts. I will append my video at the end.
Many people (especially in Japan) think that foreign languages are very difficult, and that you need to know a lot of grammar and vocabulary. At the same time, many native speakers (especially children) use a small vocabulary and the grammar they use could be written on a postcard. In other words the intellectual, structural, and factual information required of being able to speak like a child in a foreign language is the sort of thing you can learn in a couple of days.
This fact has been known in the language teaching community for some time, and leads to an emphasis upon "acquisition" of language through practice, rather than learning of language (e.g. rote memorisation of grammar and vocab).
But even using Krashen or other acquisition / communication centred techniques, progress is slow. What is the reason for this? One reason is that practice is required, just as it is required in another other skill, such as tennis. You don't become a good tennis player just by learning tennis theory.
But there is another aspect that is peculiar to language. To an extent we live in language, we narrative our selves in it, and when the language lacks meaning it results in a loss of self that is almost as scary as death (see Heine's research above). When we go to speak a foreign language, and let roll with a sentence that may well be all wrong, and may meet with a complete lack of comprehension, we enter that world of unmeaning and experience something akin to death. And this is terrifying.
However, of course, we do not die and we gradually learn not to be scared.
There is quicker route. If you practice impersonating languages, such as by watching a YouTube video of an Italian interview and then practice speaking in fake Italian mimicry (like Sid Caesar above) then you can, gradually, overcome this fear of flying into unmeaning. I am not saying that you will suddenly become a polyglot, but it will make foreign languages easier.
At the least you will become aware of one of the biggest, I would say the biggest, obstacles to foreign language proficiency.
The experiment.
1) Time yourself for a minute. Try and say as much as you can in the foreign language of you are trying to learn.
2) Then watch a video on YouTube of a language that you know nothing about and try impersonating that language for one minute. Do not worry about the quality of your impersonation, just try and make various word like sounds. (You can find some Chinese by searching for "發明" or some Italian, I think, by searching for "intervista")
In which case did you make more sound? I am guessing that you made more sounds in case (1) even though you had to use correct grammar, correct vocabulary. In case (2) you could have made any old noise.
In other words, it is not the words, the meaning, the grammar that is difficult, but the un-meaning that is the biggest, terrifying obstacle to foreign language acquisition.
If you can already "do a Sid Caesar" then I predict you will be quick at learning foreign languages or already can speak one.
Here is me impersonating Chinese. It is not good and makes me cringe a bit still but in times past the mere thought was quite beyond the pale (i.e. s*** scary). Here is a link to my video of me Impersonating Three Languages.
Image of Sid Caesar in 1959 above adapted from this image which is apparently in the public domain
Addendum (Big Mistake)
"My head" is inside my narrative and field of view, not the other way around! This is a very important point and the danger of the scientific worldview. The scientific world is a product of our narration as even some scientists a vow (Wheeler, Mach). Our head is also something we see in our field of view in mirrors, or our nose and brow directly. Our perceptions (including of our whispers) are not inside "me" or my body. To think so would be double death.

Grazie to Saturnine Dryke for the photograph :D
For my Styled Chic No. 1, I took this totally hip and modern room shot from Crate & Barrel. This hip and modern design is inspired by color and sophistication. This wedding suite contains an Invitation, belly band and RSVP card. I love working with different color palettes. I took the cream, black and purple tones as my palette. There are so many combination’s that can come from from this including the silver from the wall, but I wanted something a little different. I also took the pattern from the pillow and incorporated it on the belly band. Perfect!
I created a custom monogram to layer on the belly band to really give some punch and brand the couple. I used an ivory cream linen card stock to add some richness and flat printed them. These could just as well be letterpressed! I would pair these with gorgeous ivory cream envelopes and a custom rubber stamp. *wink

When I found the Buick Invicta Convertible, I came across this model as well.
The eBay seller posted a story about this model-it was built specifically for the original owner by Western Models based on his 1:1. He stated it was unique, a 1 of 1.
I am not sure about all that, as I have no documentation, but it makes for a good story. Whatever it is, it's a very special model in a great color and a perfect companion for the convertible.
Issued by Western Models, it is 1:43 scale & crafted in white metal.
The model is finished in Copper Glow & Beige.
This model was added to my Collection in October 2021.
I've been wearing them all day, didn't notice that one was size 2/3, the other 13/1. (I have two pair.) They stretch so they feel the same on my feet.
The issue with both sizes is that they tend to slip off my heels. They should have made the upper taller in the heel to better grip people's heels. At one point the year I got these, I stuck double back tape in the heel to hold them on better. But I just don't wear them that often any more.
Y482HWE was made redundant from Doncaster Fire Station after the introduction of their first Scania rescue pump. When it was made redundant, it took up a new role in the reserve fleet, and is currently covering for the usual Scania at Aston Park.

Moore Back to ASP World No. 1 with Win at Commonwealth Bank Beachley Classic
DEE WHY, New South Wales/Australia (Friday, May 6, 2011) – Carissa Moore (HAW), 18, returned to the podium’s highest block, winning the richest event on the ASP Women’s World Tour in clean, one-meter waves during the Commonwealth Bank Beachley Classic at Dee Why Point, Sydney today.
Moore defeated 2004 ASP Women’s World Champion Sofia Mulanovich (PER), 27 to claim her second out of four finals this season, pocketing a massive US$40,000 winner’s cheque and resumes her position as the ASP Women’s World No. 1.
“I’m really, really happy, I’ve been fired up ever since the last two events with Sally (Fitzgibbons) and I’m just super excited I was able to come out on top this time,” Moore said.
On a day when wave selection proved critical to success, Moore clawed her way back into the lead in the dying minutes of the Final, posting 6.83 and 8.33 (out of 10) scores, to defeat the Mulanovich by 15.60 to 14.60 (out of 20.00).
“I was really excited to make another final and it was refreshing to have a Sofia as an opponent,” Moore said. “She was leading for most of the heat and I was kind of nervous out there.”
Moore’s victory sees her a healthy 3350 points ahead of closest rival Sally Fitzgibbons, (AUS), 20, on the ASP World Title rankings, and has marked herself as the surfer to beat with just three events remaining.
“I’m trying to not think about the World Title too much, I know that there are a lot of girls within range, so I’m just going to keep my head down and have fun.”
Mulanovich found unique form to reach her first Final this year. Mulanovich eliminated ASP rankings leader coming into the event, Sally Fitzgibbons (AUS), 20, in their dramatic Semifinal clash, before placing runner-up to Moore in the Final.
“I haven’t been on the podium for awhile and I’m just stoked to be here, it feels amazing,” Mulanovich said. “Carissa is an amazing surfer and she’s really hard to beat although I was beating her for awhile out there, I surprised myself.”
Fitzgibbons suffered a shock elimination during the Semifinals, citing poor wave-selection her downfall against Mulanovich that cost her, her Final berth as well as the ASP World No. 1 spot.
“I can’t be disappointed with a third place but I think the waves weren’t in my favour, I just didn’t quite find my rhythm,” Fitzgibbons said. “Some days you have it like in Bells and New Zealand and some days you don’t and today I just wasn’t quite there.”
Fitzgibbons’ equal third result marks her second such finish of the season adding to an impressive tally including two wins but sees her drop one position on the ASP World Title rankings.
“You know the World Title is something you’re always reaching for and I feel like I still have a lot to give,” Fitzgibbons said. “World No. 2 is a good place to be at so I’m just going to hold my head up high and hope to get that rhythm back at the next few events and hopefully snatch a few more wins along the way.”
Three time defending event champion and four times ASP Women's World Champion Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), 23, equaled her best result of the season, placing equal third after being narrowly eliminated by Moore with 16.00 to Moore’s 16.50 heat total, in their semifinal decider.
“Third place is definitely frustrating, it’s an ok result but it’s not quite enough to satisfy me anyway,” Gilmore said. “I felt like I was surfing really good but it just came down to wave selection. Carissa got such a good start and I think I got a little too relaxed when I got a really high score and let my guard down.”
Despite posting the highest individual wave score of the event, a 9.60 (out of 10.00), Gilmore was unable able to find a second ride with sufficient scoring potential. Her result today moves her up one place into The World No. 4 spot.
“I feel much stronger and more confident and so for me it is just about building on each result and reaching for the top spot again.”

Last but not least, we have the Mikey/Foot Soldier 1 two pack. Why is he Foot Soldier 1? I have no clue.. the only difference I can tell between Foot Solider 1 here and 2 that comes with Raphael is that he comes with an extra gun.
Michaealangelo is the fun loving Turtle, and as a coincidence his included accessories sort of reflect that. Mikey has his Nunchucks, of course, as well as an open communicator, transforming rope and grappel, an extra set of hands that seem to actually be meant for use with this grappel accessory, and a Nunchuck spinning effect. Why they gave Raph the pizza slice and not Mikey? Again, who knows, though I suspect it would make you buy Raph if you insisted on having said pizza for Mikey to hold. Marketing.. what can you do. Articulation, QC, paintwork, build, and so on, again, identical to that of the other Turtles. This is why I say that when you buy each of the packs, what you're really buying is a villain with a Turtle, rather than the other way around.. at least from an engineering and design perspective. I'm also guessing that Mikey and Raph are probably two of the more popular Turtles, and can probably pull the weight of having Foot Soldier here as a partner.
Foot Soldier is, well, Foot Soldier. Meant as relatively non descript robotic fodder for the Turtles to beat the crap out of, he's fairly generic looking. Lanky, kind of dressed like a ninja, and has that trademark dislocated neck that gives him the appearance of a slightly younger Professor Farnsworth from Futurama. Accessories include a pair of open fists and a pair of open palms, along with one of the Foot Soldier's traditional weapons, a laser rifle. Definitely been on the wrong end of these things many a time while playing the arcade game. Articulation is identical to that of Shredder, but less restricted due to the fact its skirt is nowhere as rigid as the dual layered piece that Shredder has to deal with, and his head is designed such that it sits on a proper ball joint, allowing for greater range of motion for the head. Of course, he doesn't look nearly as cool as Shredder does, so.. you win some, you lose some. Otherwise, the good paint work, cel shading, QC, and build seen thus far continues. As an added bonus, the paint on the hands of my Foot Soldier do not seem to have an indication of overspray.
With that, the Turtle 2 packs have all been opened, and analyzed. For their price, they're pretty good, as they'd be in competition with the likes of Marvel Legends and other action figures priced in and around the $20 - $25 USD price points, and feature better looking joints than most of the major players out there in your traditional big box stores. Of the releases, Shredder is by far the best, with the Turtles as a whole being second, and Foot Soldier third. Krang is Krang.. he's a beast in and of his own, and really can't be compared to anything else.
I hope you've enjoyed these blurbs about the sets. While I'm done reviewing the sets, I'm not quite done with the figures yet. You see, there's been a lot of trash talk about some products being superior and what not, and I just happen to have a few things lying around that will allow for a ground level investigation of this matter. But for now..

The Rules of the New England Ironman Diner Decathalon state that participants must order and consume one food and one beverage item at every stop. This wasn't a formal meal stop, so with at least nine diners and three full meals ahead of us, eating a full breakfast was contraindicated. Still and all, I hadn't eaten in 10 hours and I desired carbs, sugar, and caffeine. So I had no fear of a grilled bagel and a Coke. Notes:
1) I'm a new convert to the Grilling process. When you toast bread, it just tastes like toast. When you grill it on a surface that's been cooking breakfasts for an hour already, it tastes like toast and bacon and ham and eggs and pancakes. It's the same basic principle as the Wonka gum that tastes like an entire meal, except without the unhappy aftereffects.
2) I've been so completely beaten into submission by this Coke And Pepsi world of ours that when the owner set down an unfamiliar cola in front of me, I almost didn't know which end of the can to open up. It's a store brand. It wasn't as good as a Coke but it was easily the equal of any Pepsi. The important thing was that it was ice-cold, as God intended.
While we ate, an employee (or maybe just a regular customer) came in carrying four or five loaves of bread from the same supermarket and handed the bag across the counter. I approve of this. Every time I've peeked Behind the Scenes at a restaurant and seen cans and jars and loaves in plain wrappers marked only 'NOT PACKAGED FOR RETAIL USE' I wonder if this so-called food isn't taking advantage of some sort of legal loophole. I assume that there's a law saying that once a certain amount of industrial tungsten gets into the batter, it goes right into the trash, or possibly the state school lunch program. But when you're selling to restaurants instead of the actual end-user, why bother shutting down the production line? You can always just head down to Home Depot and replace the set of drill bits that fell out of your shirt pocket while you were leaning over the mixing chamber.

c1910 postcard view of trolley cars and a streetcar on Washington Street in Marion, Indiana. This view is looking north on South Washington Street. The photographer was standing near the southeast corner at the intersection of Washington and Fifth Streets. The large sign on the northwest corner of that intersection (422-424 South Washington Street) advertised the BOSTON STORE CO. The store’s advertising included MARION’S BARGAIN CENTRE, 39 DEPARTMENTS, BAZAAR GOODS, DRY GOODS, MILLINERY, CARPETS, DRAPERIES, WALL PAPER, QUEENSWARE, SUITS, CLOAKS, CLOTHING, and SHOES. Both the 1905 and the 1911 Sanborn™ fire insurance map sets for Marion show a department store at this location.
The name on the building next door was _. _. ANDERSON (416 South Washington Street). Both previously-mentioned Sanborn™ map sets show a saloon at this location. A 1902 business directory¹ lists a saloon and billiard parlor owned by Ely Snyder at this address. The next building north (414 South Washington Street) was adjacent to the alley. The sign on that building advertised THE STAG. Both map sets show a saloon at this location as well. Across the alley, the 1905 map set identifies the building as the Davis Block (408-412 South Washington Street). Two signs on that building advertised TURKISH BATHS. The 1905 Sanborn™ map set shows a barbershop at that location (412 South Washington Street) with “U.B.” in the basement, but doesn’t explain that abbreviation. The 1911 map set shows the barbershop had been replaced by a clothing store. The advertising on the awning isn’t quite readable, but the next awning north (at 410 South Washington Street) advertised DRUGS. Both the 1905 and the 1911 Sanborn™ map sets show a drug store at this location. The 1902 directory listed M. Davis as the druggist at this address, but he wasn’t listed in 1908 or 1912 druggist directories. Two doors to the north, between the awnings, a white sign appears to advertise PRICE CLOTHING CO. The 1902 directory listed this business at this location (404 South Washington Street) and the 1905 Sanborn™ map set shows a clothing store at this address. The 1911 map set shows a boots and shoes store.
On the northwest corner at Fourth Street was a barely distinguishable two-story wood frame building with awnings on both the Washington Street and the Fourth Street sides. The 1905 map set shows a candy and fruits business at this location (326 South Washington Street). However, the 1911 map set shows a bank in a brick structure on that corner. On the building next door, above the old frame building, was a HEAVY SMITH’S SHOES advertisement. (There was also a store named Heavy Smith Shoe Store in Warsaw.) The advertisement was on the building at 324 South Washington Street. The nearest boots and shoes store was at 322 South Washington Street as shown on both the 1905 and 1911 Sanborn™ map sets. The 1902 business directory lists a W. C. Smith shoe store at 322 South Washington Street.

"Well, I have learned a few things in my very brief absence. 1: I was very cocky about this, right from the start. 2: I shouldn't have underestimated my old mentor. He shot an arrow through my arm and it bursts open frequently now and has stained my trenchcoat! 3: I have to be more tactical and careful with my approach. I have to get my head together, or I'll ending up braking my leg next. Anyway, the houses here suck. They are really bland and have pools but no hot tubs. So they are utterly useless right now."
Red Arrow takes #144, Halfway houses as his new base.
Also, guys, Halo 4, AC3, or EG order? I have $64 now and will have $74 on Sunday, so should I get H4 or AC3 now, wait, or get an EG order, or get H4 or AC3 now and get a small EG order on Sunday?
Here, you can see the design I had of the Sports Car, above the blue line;
the stud space is only 1. I wanted it to be 2 so it would be closer to the original design.
This design is slightly different and the chassis is completely made up, as opposed to the red sports car which is a 'one piece' system.
Secret #1. I am a big nerd. So maybe that isn't much of a secret, but I am really looking forward to the Speed Racer movie. It is directed by the Wachowski brothers. (The Matrix)

I started a new job working as an associate producer at Fresh Air. This is fantastic for two reasons.
1. I'm returning to public radio. I absolutely tortured myself over leaving Wait Wait Don't Tell Me after the car accident. I know it was the right decision, but for the past year, I've missed -- and majorly so -- working with smart, funny, creative people on a daily basis. And I love the medium of radio. To say I'm thrilled would be putting it mildly.
2. I get to live and stay in Philadelphia, where my family and friends live.
