Glacis es el terreno en pendiente cercano a una fortificación y resbaladizo con el objeto de favorecer el ángulo de tiro sobre los atacantes.

Notable conjunt de torres rodones i quadradades amb alts murs de defensa. Fruit de la "restauració" feta a partir de l'any 1928. Té elements medievals (segles XI i XII) amb altres gòtics i molta part inventada. També guarda finestrals romànics i gòtics i merlets de coronament. Forma un conjunt fantasiós.

Notícies històriques:

El castell de Castellet es troba documentat des del segle X. El juny de 997 el comte Borrell II el va vendre a Unifred Amat. Hi ha constància d'un litigi el 1037 entre Bernat Otger de Castellet i el monestir de Sant Cugat del Vallès per causa del límits del castell. Del segle XI es conserva el castell i la capella i del segle XIV són les torres quadrades, els portals i la barbacana del cantó oriental. El 1925 fou adquirit per l'arxiver Josep de Peray i March, que el va reconstruir entre els anys 1928 i 1929.

El lloc de Castellet existia abans de l'any 917, ja que a l'església de Sant Esteve de Castellet s'ha trobat una ara d'altar signada, entre d'altres, per l'abat Donadeu de Sant Cugat que va exercir el càrrec entre el 904 i el 917; la primera menció coneguda del castell, però, és del 977, encara que l'encàrrec que s'hi reflexa de reconstruir el recinte fortificat dona a entendre clarament que aquest ja existia amb una certa anterioritat. A inicis del segle XX, quan el descriu J. Vives, el castell es trobava en un avançat estat de ruïna quan fou adquirit per Josep de Peray, que el va reconstruir entre 1928-1929. El 1999 la Fundació Abertis el va adquirir i engegà un nou nou procès de rehabilitació. La torre mestra, element més antic i central en el conjunt de les construccions, fa uns 5 m de diàmetre a l'interior, té uns murs amb un gruix d'aproximadament 1,5 m i una alçada d'uns 15 m. Els murs són formats per carreus lleugerament rectangulars, més aviat grans i ben arrenglerats. Aquesta torre ha estat datada al segle XII. S'hi endevinen diverses finestres petites acabades amb un arc de mig punt; alguna és original. La porta, orientada cap al sud-oest, va ser feta de nou durant la restauració, tot i que és probable que l'original fos en aquest mateix lloc. Durant les obres que es feren en aquesta torre es reconstruïren trossos de paret i, fins i tot, es féu tota ella lleugerament més alta. La resta de les construccions sembla que ja cal datar-les en una època posterior; moltes són fetes en un moment posterior al romànic. Cal assenyalar un impressionant mur orientat a l'est, acabat amb merlets i amb espitlleres rodones, que Monreal i Riquer daten al segle XIV. Aquest mur formava part d'un clos sobirà que tenia una forma de "L", protegit al costat nord-est i al costat sud-oest per sengles torres d'angle. Al costat d'aquesta torre meridional, hi havia l'entrada, que actualment es veu amb un portal acabat amb un arc de mig punt i coronat per un matacà. Per sota d'aquest recinte, als costats nord-est i oest, hi ha un talús que segons Monreal i Riquer pot ser dels segles XI o XII. És fet amb uns carreus grossos, però, que segons Jordi Bolòs fan pensar en què més aviat fou construït al segle XIII o en un moment posterior. Aquest mur atalussat delimita un segon clos a la zona oriental. Finalment, sembla que encara hi havia un tercer clos, exterior, del qual solament ha restat un mur i una torre a la banda septentrional. L'agost de 1999 es realitzà una la primera intervenció arqueològica al castell, motivada pel projecte de la Fundació de restaurar-lo i habilitar-ne una part per a convencions i seu social. Les excavacions es realitzaren en un edifici d'època gòtica del castell, situat al peu de la torre romànica i adossat a la muralla del recinte sobirà. Aquest edifici es trobava en ruïnes i l'interès de la intervenció consistia en la possible recuperació d'estructures constructives i elements arquitectònics decorats que es poguessin trobar sota l'enderroc, així com en l'obtenció d'informació sobre l'estructuració espacial original del conjunt defensiu. Entre 2007 i 2009 s'ha reprès la investigació arqueològica al Castell. Els treballs es plantegen com un pas previ a les obres de sanejament i restauració de les estructures del castell, que implicaven actuacions d'excavació en extensió en quatre àmbits: la terrassa est (pati 1), el costat sud (pati 2) i els costats sud i est (patis 3 i 4. Un cop realitzades les intervencions, aquests són els resultats obtinguts: -Pati 1: en aquest espai s'observa un conjunt d'estructures amortitzades al segle XVII i que es corresponen amb l'evolució del castell. És possible establir tres fases; la primera seria d'un moment anterior a l'ocupació d'aquest espai per les estructures defensives construïdes al segle XI. Un segon moment és representat per tres sitges i cubetes amb evidències de combustió, localitzades en la part central de la zona i excavades al substrat rocós, potser en relació amb els forats de pal també localitzats. Tot plegat fa pensar en una zona de treball i emmagatzematge anterior al segle XIV, donats els materials ceràmics recuperats en el rebliment d'una de les sitges. La fase més moderna es data a partir del segle XIV i la configuren un tram d'escala i un mur amb pas de porta. -Pati 2: Aquesta zona presenta una complexa relació d'estructures que, en molts casos, queden parcialment ocultades per les construccions de les fases més modernes del castell. Tot i així, s'hi distingeixen quatre moments: el més antic ve datat per les ceràmiques recuperades d'època ibèrica, tot i que l'escassa quantitat de material requereix prudència, per la qual cosa els excavadors situen la fase en un moment entre època ibèrica i altmedieval. Amb posterioritat a aquest moment, es localitza un mur datat entre els segles II i XI (forquilla cronològica molt àmplia que no ha pogut ser més concretada). El tercer moment és format per un mur perimetral de tancament del pati i l'anivellament del terreny. La ceràmica corresponent a aquest moment és de cuina a mà reduïda i grisa comuna amb una cronologia del segle XI o anterior. A partir del segle XIV es torna a urbanitzar la zona i es construeix el palau. Aquesta nova edificació, de la qual s'han documentat part dels fonaments de la seva torre sud-est, anul·larà part del recinte que estava en funcionament des de l'Alta Edat Mitjana. Per últim es documenta una fase moderna amb estructures de funcionalitat desconeguda. -Pati 3: aquí s'ha observat una ocupació molt menys intensa en comparació amb altres zones del castell intervingudes. Les restes localitzades corresponen a murs datats en els segles XIV i XV i , posteriorment, una gran cisterna construïda el segle XVII a la part central del pati. Les dades assenyalen que es tracta d'un espai secundari dins el conjunt de la fortificació. -Pati 4: aquest últim espai presenta cinc moments d'ocupació diferenciats. El primer es correspon amb un mur i a un enterrament de gos, ambdós de difícil datació però que podrien correspondre a època ibèrica o romana. El segon moment queda definit per la construcció d'unes estructures datades entre època romana i el segle X. El tercer moment correspon a una construcció anterior al segle XI i que romandrà dempeus fins el segle XIV (i, parcialment, fins a l'actualitat). La quarta fase es relaciona amb la construcció del palau gòtic i, finalment, es detecta una fase del segle XV que caldria relacionar amb la Guerra Civil Catalana (durant la qual el castell fou assetjat) i que queda amortitzada entre els segles XVI i XVII. Així doncs sembla que, a nivell general, el primer moment d'ocupació de l'espai del castell seria en època ibèrica i/o romana, fet que implica la possible existència d'un jaciment d'aquesta cronologia en el lloc o en les seves proximitats, però fins al moment no ha estat possible identificar. En un moment posterior es construeix la primera estructura defensiva de l'indret. També de l'edat mitjana és la construcció del perímetre defensiu format pel mur localitzat en el pati 4 i el mur de tancament del pati 2. Aquesta obra comportaria l'aterrassament del terreny mitjançant la superposició de successives capes de pedra i sorra. El conjunt defensiu es completaria amb l'excavació del fossat i, tot plegat, es podria datar entorn el segle XI. Potser les sitges localitzades també són d'aquest moment. En el segle XIV es realitzen reformes al castell que inclouen la construcció del palau gòtic, es tanca l'espai del pati 1 i s'amortitza el recinte defensiu original i el fossat que el rodeja. Al segle XV es reexcavaria un nou fossat al pati 4, que s'amortitzaria poc temps després. Per últim es documenta una nova reestructuració dels espais, amb un nivell d'arrasament corresponent al segle XVII (moment d'abandó de l'espai del palau), l'amortització de tot l'espai del pati 1, i la construcció de la cisterna del pati 3. Entre el material arqueològic recuperat al llarg de les campanyes d'excavació destaca un magnífic cap d'alabarda que fou descobert en un dels patis del castell. També cal citar altres elements metàl·lics com ara un fermall i una placa decorada de bronze dels segles XIV-XV i rajols decorats en blanc i blau amb motius heràldics. Durant 2008, part de les estructures descobertes fins aquell moment (les que no es van poder integrar al projecte arquitectònic de restauració del castell) es van reblir definitivament amb sauló i geotèxtil per tal de garantir-ne la seva conservació.

I haven’t posted for a few days now. The reason is that I received my replacement Fuji X-T5 last Sunday and I’ve been waiting for an opportunity to take it out on a photowalk to test its autofocus given that my previous X-T5 had bad autofocus problems.

Yesterday, Tuesday, the opportunity arose. I'd used Sunday and Monday registering the camera, updating its firmware, charging its battery and customising the various buttons to my satisfaction. So, on Tuesday I took my new X-T5 out for a drive to Liverpool. We visited the city’s two cathedrals then had a walk around the Baltic Triangle. The cathedrals posed lighting and architectural tests while the walk offered handheld chances for street photography.

The results were strange. I was delighted with the street photography images, some of which I’d taken while I was actually walking. On the other hand, almost all the cathedral shots were taken with the camera mounted on a sturdy tripod, stood on a good solid, level floor and using a two-second timer delay. Several of the tripod-mounted shots were out of focus, a couple badly so. I can, therefore, rule out motion blur. Counterintuitively the only cause I can think of is dodgy autofocus.

So much for my intro to a series of posts that I’ll be offering over the next few days, starting with images of some of the buildings in the Baltic Triangle, an up-and-coming area that is a go-to destination for young people – creatives and those seeking a night-out with a buzz. The centre is around a brewery.

Bishop Olmsted ordains diocese’s newest priest

Bishop Thomas J. Olmsted ordained Dan Vanyo to the priesthood June 2 at Ss. Simon and Jude Cathedral.

 

He joins 254 diocesan and religious priests who serve the Phoenix Diocese by offering the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, conferring the sacraments and overseeing aspects of parish life. Many of them were on hand to offer congratulations to their newest brother.

 

That included a handful of local priests and some from St. John Vianney Theological Seminary in Denver who played key roles in Fr. Vanyo’s discernment. Fr. Vanyo, 43, began discerning his call to the priesthood at age 32 when a friend through a local Catholic singles group was discerning religious life.

 

“I never discerned anything,” Fr. Vanyo said. He researched some religious orders, but it wasn’t until a day for prospective diocesan seminarians that he reached a peaceful conclusion.

 

“They need help here,” Fr. Vanyo, then a hospice nurse, recalled thinking. “That’s when I gave the Lord my fiat. If you open the door, I’ll walk through it.”

 

He ran into Fr. Chauncey Winkler, who he knew from the local Catholic Retreat for Young Singles group and told him, “I think this is where I could be of some help.”

 

He entered the seminary in 2005 and was among a reported 487 ordinands nationally who will join the ranks of priesthood this year. Bishop Olmsted read from the Ordination Rite during Mass.

 

He reminded the crowd, including family and friends who filled the first row on both sides, that Jesus chose certain disciples to carry out publicly in His name, a priestly office. He reminded the diocese’s newest priest of his roles of Christ the teacher, priest and shepherd.

 

“Carry out the ministry of Christ the priest with constant joy and love,” the bishop said. He also challenged Fr. Vanyo to bring the people together in one family. That’s a challenge the priest plans to meet in his new home, Queen of Peace Parish in Mesa. He will serve as parochial vicar starting July 1.

 

“I am most excited that I will be able to hear people’s confessions. When the Holy Spirit touches the hearts of the penitents with His grace in the confessional, I will be blessed to be a witness to it,” Fr. Vanyo said.

 

In addition to a parish presence, Fr. Vanyo will serve as chaplain at Seton Catholic Preparatory High School in Chandler. Fr. Vanyo will offer his first liturgy, a Mass of Thanksgiving, at his home parish Holy Cross in Mesa, at 10 a.m. June 3.

Die Re 4/4 ( neue UIC - Bezeichnung Re 425 ) ist die elektrische Universallokomotive der

ehemaligen Bern - Lötschberg - Simplon - Bahn ( BLS ), die zeitgleich mit der S.B.B Re 4/4 I.I

in Betrieb genommen wurde. Seit der Unternehmensfusion von 1996 stehen die Lokomotiven

bei der BLS Lötschbergbahn ( heute BLS AG ) im Einsatz.

Geschichte

Sie wurde als Universallokomotive mit guter Bergleistung beschafft, um die Züge mit höheren

Geschwindigkeiten befördern zu können und um die Lokomotiven der Gründungsjahre

abzulösen.

 

Aufgrund der sehr erfolgreichen Konstruktion der A.e 4/4 der BLS, der ersten laufachslosen

Hochleistungslokomotive der Welt, leiteten die BLS und SLM die Neuentwicklung von dieser

Reihe ab. Das ist auch an der Kastenform eindeutig zu erkennen.

 

Das Fahrgestell ist ähnlich demjenigen der S.BB Re 4/4 I.I. Doch schon da hören die Gemein-

samkeiten zu dieser auch sehr erfolgreichen Baureihe auf. So wird die Kraft mit einer anders

konstruierten Tiefzuganlenkung und Seilzug auf die Schienen gebracht.

 

Statt Sandereinrichtungen besitzt die Lok Schienendüsen. Bei vielen Versuchen mit z. T.

ausländischen Lokomotiven stellt die Re 4/4 noch heute ihre enorme Leistungsfähigkeit

am Berg unter Beweis.

 

Einen 630 - Tonnen-Zug kann die Lok auf einer 26-‰-Steigung mit 80 km/h befördern. Die

Stundenzugkraft beträgt 226 kN bei 77.5 km/h. So wurde damals, aufgrund der mit der

Thyristorsteuerung ausgerüsteten Re 4/4 2.6.1 absolvierten Vorführungs- und Probefahrten

am S.emmering die heute noch sehr erfolgreiche Ö.B.B 1.044 entwickelt.

 

Die Ansteuerung der Fahrmotoren erfolgt über den BBC-Trafo, Stufenschalter mit Luftmotor

auf den Diodengleichrichter. Die elektrische Bremse, bis 800 A Bremsstrom, wirkt mithilfe

der Dachwiderstände.

 

Die Lokomotive kann mit allen vielfachsteuerbaren Loktypen der BLS in Vielfachsteuerung

verkehren. Zuerst wurde sie also im schweren Schnellzugsdienst verwendet. Nach und nach

begann man, die älteren Loks der Typen BLS A.e 6./.8, BLS A.e 8./.8 und BLS A.e 4/4 durch

die Re 4/4 abzulösen. So sind sie heute im Transitgüterverkehr, in Pendelzügen und im

Autoverlad anzutreffen.

 

Die Re 4/4 werden zusammen mit den Re 4.6.5 und Re 4.8.5 im Güterverkehr eingesetzt,

ausserdem verkehren sie mit S.teuerwagen auf der S11 ( S-Bahn Bern), zwischen I.nterlaken

und Z.weisimmen sowie in den A.utozügen K.andersteg - G.oppenstein und I.selle.

 

Früher zogen sie auch Züge des Personenfernverkehrs. Die Loks 1.6.1 bis 1.8.0 gehören

buchmässig BLS Cargo, werden aber mit den anderen 15 Loks gemeinsam eingesetzt.

1.7.0 bis 1.8.9 sind mit ETCS ausgerüstet und können somit (als führendes Triebfahrzeug)

den Lötschbergbasistunnel und die N.eubaustrecke M.attstetten - R.othrist befahren.

 

1.9.1 bis 1.9.5 sind für den Personenverkehr mit Railvox - Geräten ausgerüstet.

 

Da die Vielfachsteuerung der Re 425 nicht mit dem System IIId kompatibel ist, mit dem die

von der S.B.B übernommenen E.W III ( für RE B.ern - L.uzern und N.euchâtel ) ausgerüstet

sind, wurden inzwischen 12 Re 4/4I.I ( und weitere 5 S.teuerwagen ) der S.B.B für den

Personenverkehr ( S-Bahn Bern ) übernommen und als Re 4.2.0.5 eingereiht.

 

Am 4. August 2007 wurden die Re 4/4 1.7.0, 1.7.5, 1.8.4 und 1.8.7 bei einem Unfall im

R.angierbahnhof B.iel schwer beschädigt. Die 1.8.7 wurde anschließend verschrottet, die

anderen Loks werden wieder aufgebaut.

Loknummern und Wappen

Alle Lokomotiven tragen das Wappen einer Gemeinde, durch die eine Strecke der ehemaligen

BLS - Gruppe führt. Die ursprüngliche BLS bildete bis 1996 zusammen mit drei weiteren

Privatbahn - Gesellschaften die BLS - Gruppe, eine Betriebsgemeinschaft.

 

Das Rollmaterial wurde schon damals in einem gemeinsamen Nummernschema eingereiht,

die formellen Besitzer der Lokomotiven waren dagegen die einzelnen Gesellschaften. Vier

Lokomotiven waren daher nicht mit BLS, sondern mit den Initialen der damaligen

Eigentümerbahn angeschrieben.

As I already have MMS347 Deadpool 1, I wasn’t too keen on the 2 as both do not look that different. However, last year I got this one in a pretty good price for damaged box discount. According to the seller it was badly damaged during transit. I bought it anyway thinking I will fix the box.

 

However, today I took it out from the storage and had a good look at the damage and it is not going to be an easy repair work...

 

Perhaps I will just leave it or get an empty box from eBay but doing so will erode the discount I had! HaHa! Maybe I will just leave it as is. Anyhow I have pre-ordered the Cable special edition (just because it has a shield) to complement the Deadpool.

Started on 3/27, finished on the train today

 

I've been settling on Paintbook for drawing on the train for the following reasons:

 

1. It is really really quick to get a clean surface to draw on. Click once to save what you've got, click again to get a new piece of paper, click a third time to choose paper color. It's also three clicks in Brushes but it takes longer since it loads the gallery in between. I surely don't understand all the apps that make you go to a gallery view to get a clean piece of paper.

 

2. This next point also applies to other vector programs such as Quill and Inkpad, By drawing with filled shapes, I eliminate the need to ever change line size and can simply draw. Basically I use a very thin line and a fill of the same color, with a fair amount of transparency. To draw a 'line' I draw both sides of the line, close together for a thin line, further apart for a thick line. While this may seem like double the strokes to draw, it gives me far more control without ever having to interrupt my drawing to go to a menu. It also allows me to vary the shape of my lines, how they taper etc. And of course a shape is just a very thick, undulating line ;)

 

3. This also applies to all three Vector programs I use, and is actually easier to deal with in Quill: I can focus on drawing without going to color wheels, and then change the color of each part after the fact. Of course for these very quick drawings I often leave them in a fairly monotone range, but on longer drawings I'll go back and develop the color later.

 

OK, while I'm listening to the sound of my own typing, what don't I like about Paintbook?

 

1. I hate the color wheel palette thingy and tend to treat it as just having the fixed preselected colors. Could we have an option for *any* standard color wheel?

2. When I'm in object edit mode and have an object selected it would be far easier than having all those tiny icons whose meanings I need to memorize (and whose definitions are not available offline) to simply have two-finger mode act on the object rather than the whole drawing. Then I could intuitively move, resize, rotate, etc, just by using my two fingers - as one might expect.

3. It's great that it's so easy get a new piece of paper, but I wish it didn't reset all my setting every time. I would like to keep my drawing mode, color, etc from drawing to drawing in the same session (or even across sessions).

Die Sperre - Sperrstelle von Heiligenschwendi befindet sich bei Heiligenschwendi -

Schwendi ob dem T.hunersee im Berner Oberland im Kanton Bern in der Schweiz.

Sie wird eingestuft als Sperrstellen von nationaler Bedeutung.

Beschrieb Militärische Denkmäler in den Kantonen Bern und F.reiburg

Die Sperrstelle Heiligenschwendi umfasst mehrere Gruppen von Werken. Sie war Teil

des nördlichen Sperrriegels zum Zentralraum, welcher mit dem Operations - Befehl

12 bis im J.anuar 1941 von der Z.ulg auf den S.igriswilgrat verschoben wurde.

 

Wo das G.elände es erforderte, wurde verstärkt. Die Sperrstelle zieht sich von der w.est-

lichsten Gruppe bei “A.spiwald” über die Gruppen “T.rachtwegen”, “H.alten”, “bei der

G.asse” und wird abgeschlossen mit der Gruppe “D.enkmalpassage”.

 

Die Gruppen werden gebildet aus je einem G.eländepanzerhindernis mit dazugehörigen

P.anzerbarrikaden auf S.trassen und W.egen sowie den I.nfanterieständen und -S.childern.

N.ördlich dieses Sperrriegels befindet sich eine Sperre bei M.ultenegg, die bei S.talden

fortgesetzt wurde, heute nur noch aus I.nfanteriebunkern und F.eldkanonen - S.childern

bestehend.

 

Ihre G.eländepanzerhindernisse ( H.olzpfahlsperren ) waren die ersten B.auten der Sperr-

stelle Heiligenschwendi. Sie wurden im A.ugust 1940 durch das Kommando der 3. Division

mit dem Kdt. Geb. Inf. Rgt. 16 und Geb. Sap. Bat. 3 rekognosziert, im J.anuar 1941 fertig-

gestellt.

 

Im S.üden des Sperrriegels befindet sich die Gruppe „M.ehlbaumen“ mit einem F.eld-

k.anonen- und einem I.nfanteriekanonen - S.child. Die Sperrstelle Heiligenschwendi findet

ihre F.ortsetzung bei H.ünibach.

 

Sie bildet ein landschaftlich schönes und prägnantes Ensemble, zeigt exemplarisch die

Sperrlinie. Sie ist bis auf die Gruppen “M.ultenegg” und “S.talden” noch vollständig er-

halten, besitzt eine grosse Anzahl und Vielfalt an typologisch unterschiedlichen Gelände-

p.anzerhindernissen.

Die ausgedehnte Sperrstelle Heiligenschwendi umfasst mehrere Gruppen von Werken. Sie

war Teil des nördlichen Sperr-Riegels zum Zentralraum, welcher mit dem Operationsbefehl

Nr 12 bis im J.anuar 1941 von der Z.ulg auf den S.igriswilergrat verschoben wurde. Wo das

G.elände es erforderte, wurde verstärkt. Die Gruppen werden gebildet aus Geländepanzer-

hindernissen mit dazugehöriger P.anzerbarrikaden auf den S.trassen und Wegen sowie

den P.anzerabwehrständen und -schildern.

 

Die ersten G.eländepanzerhindernisse bestanden aus eingerammten H.olzpfählen. Als

Vergleich dient die Sperrstelle E.inigen, die zur nächsten Generation gehört und vor allem

aus B.etonbauten besteht.

 

Die Heiligenschwendi - Sperren wurden im A.ugust 1940 durch das Kommando der 3.

Division mit dem Kommando des Gebirgsinfanterie - Regimentes 16 und des Gebirgs-

Sappeur - Batallions 3 rekognosziert, im J.anuar 1941 fertiggestellt. Die Sperrstelle

Heiligenschwendi findet ihre Fortsetzung bei E.ichbühl unten am T.hunersee .

 

Sie bildet laut ADAB - Beschreibung ein landschaftlich schönes und prägnantes Ensemble,

zeigt exemplarisch die Sperrlinie. Da die Sperre Heiligenschwendi eine zentrale Bedeutung

und eine riesige Ausdehnung hatte, ist eine Aufteilung in W.erkgruppen sinnvoll.

It's unfortunate that I live in the city, so I can hardly ever do this :/

 

New project! 100 things you didn't know about me! It's pretty self explanatory, but what I'm doing is taking 100 self portraits depicting 100 facts that most people don't know about me.

 

I thumbtacked a bed sheet to the wall to take this picture :] Pretty handy, no? This picture is rather grainy, low lighting and what not. But you know, that doesn't really matter much to me. Because I really like this, and in the end, that's all that really matters to me :)

Massive Upsets and Big Scores Unfold for Rounds 3 and 4 of Billabong Rio Pro

 

BARRA DA TIJUCA, Rio de Janeiro/Brazil (Thursday, May 19, 2011) – The Billabong Rio Pro returned to the beachbreak of Barra Da Tijuca after two days at the lefthander of Arpoador and saw massive upsets unfold among the event’s highest scores in punchy four foot waves while completing Rounds 3 and 4 of competition.

 

Stop No. 3 of 11 on the ASP World Title Series, the Billabong Rio Pro not only plays a crucial role in surfers’ campaigns for the ASP World Title, but also offers important points for competitors out to requalify at the halfway mark in the season.

 

Bobby Martinez (USA), 28, was responsible for the upset of the event when he defeated reigning 10-time ASP World Champion Kelly Slater (USA), 39, in a close heat of 14.50 to 14.10. The talented Californian unveiled a lightning-quick forehand attack and impressive backhand aerial game in his hard-fought heat to take the Round 3 win.

 

“There were some lefts and Kelly (Slater) went down to the rights and you’re always worried that he sees something that you don’t,” Martinez said. “I just got lucky, things worked to my advantage. I got that one right under his priority and that’s what he usually does. I thought I’d try and reverse the role. ”

 

Martinez, who is currently sitting at No. 55 on the men’s ASP World Ranking, knows that he is in need of results to try and improve his seed to remain on the elite ranks and hopes the victory over Slater will turn momentum in his favor.

 

“I hope this helps my seed, this is the best I’ve done in over a year,” Martinez said. “Last year I struggled a lot and this year I have struggled. I’ve had some tough heats, but everything’s tough these days. Sometimes the waves are tough and if the waves are good your competitor is tough. Nothing is easy, but I’m just trying my best.”

 

Michel Bourez (PYF), 25, went absolutely mental in his Round 3 match-up to eliminate defending event winner Jadson Andre (BRA), 21, by belting a combination of furious backhand maneuvers to earn the second-highest single-wave score of the entire competition, a 9.70, and quickly followed up with a 9.40 (both out of 10). Both rides saw Bourez take the highest heat total of Billabong Rio Pro competition in his near-perfect performance of 19.10 out of 20.

 

“That heat started before the horn because me and Jadson (Andre) were paddling to get the inside ones,” Bourez said. “The first one came and I knew I needed to get a good score and needed to get a good start. That’s what happened, I got a 9.70. Just after that I tried and air and broke by board and thought ‘oh no, it’s not going to happen.’ I got another right and got that 9.40 and after that my board was done, I couldn’t surf, so I just took a couple of close outs.”

 

Josh Kerr (AUS), 26, was also responsible for an upset of his own when he lofted a big frontside air on a wedging righthander in the final minutes of his Round 3 heat to eliminate Jordy Smith (ZAF), 23, in Round 3.

 

“I’m stoked, the whole game-plan was to go down there on those rights,” Kerr said. “I saw Kelly down there and it looked like there were a couple of good ones. I saw Jordy (Smith) get those lefts, but luckily I got that right and went for the punt.”

 

Kerr later went on to advance directly through to the Quarterfinals by winning his Round 4 bout.

 

Joel Parkinson (AUS), 30, continued his form after a standout performance in Round 2 and built momentum throughout the day to take his Round 3 heat and followed up with the highest single-wave score of the entire event, a 9.73 out of 10 to win his three-man Round 4 heat in the last seconds, advancing directly into the Quarterfinals.

 

“It’s kind of one of those things where you’re only as good as your last heat and once you have a shocker you don’t want to have another one,” Parkinson said. “It might have been a blessing in disguise (to lose in Round 1). I’m glad I got that one out of the way and my strategy is good and I feel good.”

 

Parkinson’s guaranteed 5th place result at the Billabong Rio Pro temporarily moves him to the No. 1 position on the ASP World Title Rankings after Slater’s early elimination, but the stylish natural-footer was cautious in claiming his place as the new frontrunner for the ASP World Title.

 

“It’s too early to think about this early in the year,” Parkinson said. “It’s only the third event of the year to start worrying about it (the ASP World Title). If it was later on in the season, then sure, but as of now, who knows what can happen.”

 

Taj Burrow (AUS), 32, was one top seed to prevail among the day’s upsets. The veteran campaigner not only took out his Round 3 victory, but also took a commanding win in Round 4 to ignite the day’s second-highest heat-total of 18.40 out of 20.

 

“That felt good, I felt good out there for sure,” Burrow said. “As long as I can get a wave with an open face I feel like I can get the job done, but that’s the hard thing. Sometimes you just get on a roll and it has a lot to do with confidence. For me confidence is a big thing and it’s a tough one for me. When it’s high, I don’t know what it is, it just does it. I feel like I’ve been on tour long enough to win heats.”

 

Adriano de Souza (BRA), 24, was also impressive in Round 3 today and continued to use the support of his passionate Brazilian fans to lift his performance.

 

“I’m happy to move to Round 4,” De Souza said. “I can’t believe it, there is this massive crowd down on the beach and I wanted to go for it. I’m proud of myself for making that heat. C.J. (Hobgood) is a world champ and he’s surfing amazing and he does so well in these conditions. It was an amazing feeling to get through and I’ll see how I can do in this event.”

 

De Souza will surf again in Round 5 of Billabong Rio Pro competition and can potentially overtake Parkinson for the No. 1 position on the ASP World Title race pending the final day’s results.

At last! it took us a lot of months to prepare this. That it feels so difficult to believe it is out today.

 

I remember making several jokes during the process about Stephen Strange being already part of my family. This is the second time I deal with him, the first one was “Strange the doctor is out” with Mark Waid from which you can find some samples searching around here.

Honestly, Strange was always a fave but now he feels like a cousin or an uncle, and thanks to this book, so does Wong.

I´ve been always in love with the classic stuff, so much it´s always thrilling but difficult to confront new stories about him, even more if they are related to his origin.

We basically prepared an untold adventure trying not to touch anything that was already in his story. We did our best for being respectful and I believe the story ended up being touching and fun. The book is all about the characters and our love for them, hope you can enjoy it as much as we did.

 

I want to say thanks to all my team, Greg Pak, Ellie Pyle, Jordie Bellaire, Clayton Cowles and Álvaro López for doing such a great job and for being so wonderful. Also Tom Brevoort, for his advices during the process, and because he was the one who put me in the first Strange book I did, which was also the first long gig I had at Marvel.

 

If after reading the book, any of you feel a bit more intereseted in the magic side of the Marvel universe, I´d consider my task as a success. The only thing I´d ask you would be, please, just go and read Ditko's stuff, you can find it in Essential Doctor Strange volume 1. I promise you´ll be blown away.

1. I have hair on my knuckles that I can only see when I'm at my laptop in a dark room, like when I typed this and I noticed it and though "ew, gross..." but then realized that if I can only see it when I'm at my laptop in a dark room, it can't be that bad.

2. music is a pretty big part of my life, although not nearly as big as it was before I discovered and fell in love with photography. I lead worship at my church either from piano or guitar and have been doing so for years.

1. I am the only son of an only son of an only son. In connection with this, the man in the centre of the picture is Joseph Reid, a schooner captain and my great grandfather. The little boy tucked into his arm is Eldred Reid, my grandfather.

 

2. I lived in the house in the picture for two years in the early 70s, when I was around four or five years old. I also spent many months and weeks during the summers of my childhood with my grandparents in Heart's Delight. Much time was spent catching frogs and crabs, as well as drawing comic books in scrap books. In my memories and imagination, the town of Heart's Delight will always have an association with sunshine and an easy state of being.

 

3. Although I've spent a lot of time trying to figure it out, I have no firsthand idea of how non-creative people can put up with their own company.

 

4. I don't count myself as having produced anything of any real merit for more than six years, since I moved out of a place I was renting as a painting studio on my 34th birthday. Subsequently, I sometimes have trouble putting up with my own company.

 

5. I sing. Nothing all the way through, of course. Just bits and pieces of songs. I got in quite a bit of practice while I was alone in my painting studio. Some people are gracious enough to tell me that I'm half-decent.

 

6. Or maybe it's impressions of singers that I do. Anything from the plaintive rant of Roger Waters of Pink Floyd to the plaintive swoon of Fran Healy of Travis. Sometimes I even do Elvis Presley.

 

7. For 15 years of my life I wanted to be a comic book artist. I was a teenager at just the right time to see Frank Miller and Alan Moore start to do their stuff. Although I got bored of comics when I was 17, the ambition continued until I was 22, when I decided I wanted to paint instead.

 

8. Watchmen, which was first published during my first year of university, was the last comic that I bought regularly. Alan Moore really had the golden touch.

 

9. My childhood was ruled by a boundlessly expansive imagination. The things that caught my attention -- comic books, chapter books, drawing, and later pop music -- seemed more wonderful than I will ever be able to express. Pretty girls should be listed there too. Pretty girls really had me in a bad way.

 

10. Off the top of my head, my favorite movies this past year were Superbad and... wait a bit, I'll get back to you.

 

11. Off the top of my head, my favourite music this past year was Bon Iver. (I enjoy mimicing Justin Vernon's falsetto, too.)

 

12. Way out ahead of the pack, my favourite author is Kurt Vonnegut. He offers me complicency, I guess, just as any friend would. I've also been deeply moved by the writings John Steinbeck. Saroyan has brought me to tears, but that was years ago. The best I read this past year was Cormac McCarthy.

 

13. Fortunately for me, I can't play first-person shooters. They all give me a terrible headache. Unfortunately for me, if I actually can see an avatar on the screen, then I can play computer games without getting a headache for quite a while. But I don't bother with them very much.

 

14. I work as a graphic designer at a small town printer's. I've known since the mid-90s that I found graphic design to be truly soul-sucking work. Maybe if my life hadn't had certain difficulties, I would have been able to work my way into an interesting graphic designer postion, like, say, art director for an interesting magazine.

 

15. When I wasn't painting or graphic designing during the past decade, I was driving ambulances, pumping gas, or working as a clerk. Like I say, if my life hadn't had certain difficulties...

 

16. If you've reached Number 16, then you're probably a friend of mine.

My final assignment for week 1. I envisioned a vintage-y tea-towel, and maybe a series of my painted mushrooms—or maybe each one a different veggie that grows in the ground. Onion, pumpkin, corn, squash. . .

Here is my own critique after hearing Lilla's review for week one:

Perhaps the background is too 'repeat-y" Might be nice for there to be more icons and vary the layout more (instead of in columns/) I meant to leave off the pattern in the oval—I still think I should remove it. the loops—too simple? not related enough? The coordinate one the left might should be a main pattern— not a coordinate. Too complicated. Further develop a pattern using all of my painted mushrooms in a group. Might work nicely along with the dish-towel idea.

but, did you know I'm married to my best friend.

Lesson 7: Version 1. I made this drawing sitting before this outside nativity creche created by a devout woman. I tried to isolate and paint shapes, one by one, trying to keep the values true to the subject.

 

The creche sits in a yard used by her family to store trucks, tractors, and heavy equipment for earth-moving.

My mom took this pic back in November near the Blue Mountains. It's me and my hubby.

1-I'm a Canadian residing in Autralia. Been here over 6 yrs now and love it but still miss home.

 

2-I met my wonderful husband through the internet over 7 yrs ago. Been married 6yrs and everyday is a blessing with him. He's my soulmate and I love him dearly.

 

3-I work in healthcare. I'm an Enrolled Nurse here in Sydney area. I work in the hospital on a rehab ward from geriatrics. Learning everyday and still enjoy it. Like any job you have good and bad days. I also work nights but at least have my weekends with my hubby.

 

4-My favourite time of year is Autumn. I love the different colours that surround us.

 

5- My favourite holiday is Thanksgiving. I always loved this holiday and the get togethers with family, Miss those. It's not recognized here.

 

6-I really enjoy cooking or baking. It's a time where I forget about stresses and it calms me. I sometimes bake and bring in the goodies to work or my husband takes them to his work.

 

7-I love taking pictures. It's my hobby. I first started in my late teens with pics of friends or places we went too. Now I really enjoy getting shots of nature and animals. I want to build my collection of lenses and learn more about taking a good picture. I bought a book to learn about what lense would suit me and to learn the jargon talk of photography.

 

8-My dream holiday place is Greece. Since I can remember I always wanted to go there. It looks magical to me. One day we shall see it.

 

9-I have an addiction to collection cookbooks and kitchen gadgets. I had to store some of my books away. My husband laughs at me when we pass a store that sells kitchen items. He knows if I go in I come out with something that I may never use. lol

 

10-I enjoy reading, My favourite type of books are horror and fantasy. I like vampire, witch and werewolve books. I enjoy reading books from Kelley Armstrong, Laurell K Hamilton, Kim Harrison and now Stephenie Meyer.

 

11-I'm addicted to playing games on pogo.com

 

12-I enjoy seeing a good horror or suspence thriller. A fav of mine is Silence of the Lambs. We don't go to the movies too often as it costs too much in my opinion. It costs $16.50 each to see a movie. So we go for certain ones that should be seen on the big screen.

 

13-I love animals. Birds especially. They have character. Freddy our Green cheek conure has brought alot of laughter and joy into our lives. He's our baby.

 

14-I love going to the zoo or reserve parks. It's fascinating seeing different animals and how they communicate with each other. Feather Wildlife Park is one of my favourites to go to for their variety of birds.

 

15-I love licorice. Miss Twizzlers from home but have found a store called Darrell Lea that sells a variety of different flavoured licorice as well as chocolate and candies. They have Black licorice, Strawberry, Blackcurrant, Apple and Mango. YUMMY!

 

16-I love foot rubs. I'm spoiled in that my hubby gives me a foot rub every evening before I go to work or anytime I want one. lol

Last but not least, we have the Mikey/Foot Soldier 1 two pack. Why is he Foot Soldier 1? I have no clue.. the only difference I can tell between Foot Solider 1 here and 2 that comes with Raphael is that he comes with an extra gun.

 

Michaealangelo is the fun loving Turtle, and as a coincidence his included accessories sort of reflect that. Mikey has his Nunchucks, of course, as well as an open communicator, transforming rope and grappel, an extra set of hands that seem to actually be meant for use with this grappel accessory, and a Nunchuck spinning effect. Why they gave Raph the pizza slice and not Mikey? Again, who knows, though I suspect it would make you buy Raph if you insisted on having said pizza for Mikey to hold. Marketing.. what can you do. Articulation, QC, paintwork, build, and so on, again, identical to that of the other Turtles. This is why I say that when you buy each of the packs, what you're really buying is a villain with a Turtle, rather than the other way around.. at least from an engineering and design perspective. I'm also guessing that Mikey and Raph are probably two of the more popular Turtles, and can probably pull the weight of having Foot Soldier here as a partner.

 

Foot Soldier is, well, Foot Soldier. Meant as relatively non descript robotic fodder for the Turtles to beat the crap out of, he's fairly generic looking. Lanky, kind of dressed like a ninja, and has that trademark dislocated neck that gives him the appearance of a slightly younger Professor Farnsworth from Futurama. Accessories include a pair of open fists and a pair of open palms, along with one of the Foot Soldier's traditional weapons, a laser rifle. Definitely been on the wrong end of these things many a time while playing the arcade game. Articulation is identical to that of Shredder, but less restricted due to the fact its skirt is nowhere as rigid as the dual layered piece that Shredder has to deal with, and his head is designed such that it sits on a proper ball joint, allowing for greater range of motion for the head. Of course, he doesn't look nearly as cool as Shredder does, so.. you win some, you lose some. Otherwise, the good paint work, cel shading, QC, and build seen thus far continues. As an added bonus, the paint on the hands of my Foot Soldier do not seem to have an indication of overspray.

 

With that, the Turtle 2 packs have all been opened, and analyzed. For their price, they're pretty good, as they'd be in competition with the likes of Marvel Legends and other action figures priced in and around the $20 - $25 USD price points, and feature better looking joints than most of the major players out there in your traditional big box stores. Of the releases, Shredder is by far the best, with the Turtles as a whole being second, and Foot Soldier third. Krang is Krang.. he's a beast in and of his own, and really can't be compared to anything else.

 

I hope you've enjoyed these blurbs about the sets. While I'm done reviewing the sets, I'm not quite done with the figures yet. You see, there's been a lot of trash talk about some products being superior and what not, and I just happen to have a few things lying around that will allow for a ground level investigation of this matter. But for now..

15. I envy women who love to exercise. To me it's a pain in the ass and I only do it when my pants start getting tight or I have to fit into a bridesmaid dress...

I had big plans for a great sunrise photo of my fuzzy slippered feet, but an 8pm cup of coffee and the resulting 4am bedtime sort of put that idea squarely out of the running. *laughs* Instead my first photo of 2015 is of my 8am cup of coffee and Cinnamon Toast Crunch.

I saw someone do this really cool a really cool profile portrait that was super dramatic and had these crazy shadows, so I decided to have a go at it!

 

A lot of people may not know this about me, but I listen to a TON of hip hop. For some reason, when I first meet someone, that isn't the impression that they get?? I think because I used to have super long skater hair, people thought I listened to a different genre of music.. but nope. I listen almost exclusively to hip hop. I grew up on hip hop, listened to hip hop my whole life, and will continue to listen to hip hop for the rest of my life. It's just something I can't ever get tired of.

And the hip hop culture is amazing as well. I lurk a bunch of hip hop forums and I can read the discussions for hours on end. Unfortunately though, a lot of people, mostly older people, think hip hop is ignorant music for hood rats. They listen to one "hip hop" song on the radio and immediately generalize that kind of music to a particular group of people.. But that's actually one of the things that I love most about the culture of hip hop. Not many people dig deep into the underground artists, into the more introspective types of hip hop. A lot of my favorite rappers talk about their stories growing up, the struggles they've had as teenagers and adults, and how they've made something from nothing.. And I think that's inspiring. It's easy for me to relate to.

As for my favorite artists/albums?

Below the Heavens by Blu & Exile is my #1 album of all time. If you haven't heard it yet, you need to give it a chance. HMU and I'll give you a download link to it. It's actually my girlfriend's favorite album too! :3

Another one of my favorites is, and this may be an unpopular opinion to some, Kanye West.

If you think about it, without Kanye, the hip hop game would be completely different today. Think about when College Dropout dropped, what other kinds of hip hop were dominant? Gangsta rap. Then Kanye came and literally, LITERALLY, changed the game. Without Kanye, there would be no Drake. There would be no Kendrick Lamar. And those two are two of the most popular out there right now.. And yet, people don't give Kanye credit, and instead, bash him as a crazy lunatic who wants nothing but attention.

Listen to College Dropout. Then listen to Late Registration. Kanye completely changes his style between albums. Then listen to Graduation. AGAIN, he changes his album. 808's and Heartbreaks comes next, and once again, his style is completely different. His greatest album in my opinion, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, shows a completely different Kanye. I don't know any rapper that can change his style like that for almost every album. Crazy.

Kanye haters, give Yeezy another chance.

Always a need to clean up after every celebration.

1| I'm a gemini, there's dual me in me.

 

2| I love contradiction, have never fail to contradict myself at any situation.

 

3| I'm accident prone, people say it's because of "middle child syndrome" and I believe so, just to make myself feel betta :P

 

4| I love flowers, esp. mini orchids. I grow them in the office.

 

5| I can't take caffeinated drinks but like the smell of coffee.

 

6| I wish I have 48 hours a day... so that I can spend 24 hours doing nothing :P

 

7| My interest can't last for long... I jump from one hobbies to another.

 

8| I need to learn, explore, play or buy NEW things every now and then.

 

9| I enjoy daydreaming and I'll do it during public rides...

 

10| I'm blur... keep losing things... I lost my Identification card 3 times.

 

11| My nickname is "1MB", cos I have short-term memory, that includes forgetting unhappiness.

 

12| I love ice-cream, it's a reward to myself for being good

 

13| I'm not good with words, that's probably why I haven't been leaving much comments on your flickr :)

 

14| I studied Engineering and did a career switch to designing and not regretting it.

 

15| I believe in: Do what you do, love what you do... I love my job, most of the time.

 

16| Last but not least, my new year resolution this year is to USE-LESS, do more and be eco-friendly.
