This image is from my most recent trip to Cuba.
I am not a big believer in the 17th century painting theory approach to composition. As a matter of fact I think it is dogmatic, pedantic and pompously silly. Grecian Mean, Golden rule, Rule of Thirds, et.al. for me is the outcome of a bunch of dead old guys sitting around a rtable trying to define what a bunch of deader older guys were thinking.
. I feel that understanding human visual perception and how we “see” things is the more important thing to understand. For me, and what guides my hand in post, is that all my images are optical illusions basically a variation on the French drop coin trick.
The ownership of color in an image is the most critical factor in the visual success of the image. A pattern is interesting but a pattern interrupted is more interesting Shape is the enemy of color. The eye has a tendency to see the shape over the color. THe key is to cause shape to become the unwitting ally of color so you will see the colors over the shape whilst still capturing the gesture of the image.
There is more to boxing than the elegance of the randomness of the ring.
